PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bubba Chandler allowed three hits in six innings, Jake Mangum had three hits and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Mets 9-0 on Saturday night to end a four-game skid.
Chandler (5-8) struck out five and walked one on 85 pitches — 58 for strikes. The 23-year-old former top prospect has surrendered seven earned runs in 26 2/3 innings over his past five starts.
Mangum had two doubles, a single and a stolen base. Nick Gonzales drove in three runs for the Pirates, who hadn't scored more than four in seven straight games since an 8-7 loss at the Reds on July 31.
Robert Stock (0-2) lasted three innings for the Mets, being charged for eight runs on nine hits and five walks with four strikeouts.
Mangum led off the first with a double off the right-field wall and scored from third when Gonzales grounded back to Stock with the bases loaded. Ronny Simon then slipped a two-out double just inside third base and down the line, tacking on two more.

Florida State football did a big-time revamp of its coaching staff during the offseason. Blue Adams, who spent the last two seasons with the Michigan State Spartans as their secondary coach, was hired to be the new cornerbacks coach at FSU.
He hasn't landed a major prospect yet in recruiting, but multiple cornerbacks/defensive backs have praised him and his approach. At the moment, Adams is getting his unit ready for the regular season as they go through fall camp, and they need to be on point for the Seminoles to make a turnaround from a 5-7 campaign.
He recently discussed several topics. One of them was about what it's like being a coach at Florida State, and he doesn't take it for granted.
"Oh man, I thought you was about to ask me what did I feel when they told me I was coming to Florida State. Florida State. I get an opportunity to coach at Florida State. THE Florida State University. I'm living the dream right now. I'm living the dream. I'm living the dream. North Florida is North Florida, you know. Situation is always going to be the situation. I can't control that. But what I can control is an opportunity to go out there and lead men. You know, get guys to play better. And so it's a daily battle to do just that," Adams said.
Ja'Bril Rawls is the No. 1 corner in the room, and he's looking to build off the year he had in 2025 before a season-ending shoulder injury. Transfer Nehemiah Chandler and Quindarrius Jones will each man the other starting spot, and Charles Lester will also need to contribute.

A loaded 2028 class in the state of Arizona has national appeal with suitors for the top prospects spanning the country.
It is a defensive-heavy group, especially with the top three recruits in the state, but there is plenty of offensive firepower in the state.
Here is a look at some of the top recruits in the Grand Canyon State and how their recruitments are lining up.
–Goodyear (Ariz.) Desert Edge edge Jalanie George is the highest-rated defensive prospect in the 2028 class by Rivals. In May, George named a top six of, alphabetically, Auburn, Florida, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Washington. He plans to visit Auburn when they host Florida on September 19 and he's working on finalizing a visit to Ohio State. Two of his teammates are committed to Washington, 2027 quarterback Blake Roskopf and receiver Zerek Sidney and he said he wants to get to Husky Stadium this fall and Oklahoma is also likely to get him to visit with his committed teammate Mikyal Davis. In June, he camped at Miami and also made a multi-day visit to Florida and said he hit it off with head coach Jon Sumrall. He plans to trim his list once more this fall and hopes to have a decision in January at the Navy All-American Bowl.
–Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton cornerback Keaton Fields maintains he's completely wide open and won't even hint at schools standing out. With nearly 30 offers, Fields was able to visit Notre Dame, Penn State and Texas A&M and he's working on plans for game day visits, with a few games being considered but nothing locked in. Arizona State offered him in June as part of the Golden Ticket push, and his father played for the Sun Devils, and he said they were one of three schools recruiting him the hardest along with Texas A&M, which has had major success in the state the last two years, as well as USC, where his teammate, Roye Oliver is committed.

After a bit of a dud on Monday night, the Brewers will, for the third day in a row, go for their 70th win tonight as they attempt to even this four-game series against Pittsburgh at one game apiece. With a 6-1 record, the Pirates have had Milwaukee's number this season, a stark change over the modern history in this divisional rivalry; over the last 20 years, the Brewers have an overall record of 194-126 against the Buccos.
Tonight's pitching matchup features two bright young stars, both 24 years old, though not the first two who might come to mind when considering these two teams. For the Brewers, Logan Henderson—still a Brewer after many a speculative fan had linked him to a Tarik Skubal trade before the deadline yesterday—gets the nod, while the Pirates send Jared Jones.
By rate stats, Henderson has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season. A back injury has limited his innings, but this will be his fifth start since missing about a month and a half between late May and early July. In the nine starts that Henderson has made, he's pitched to a 2.66 ERA and 2.80 FIP, a 0.909 WHIP, and 11 strikeouts to just 1.8 walks per nine innings. You'd expect that the league will adjust to Henderson at some point, and he's averaged less than five innings per start this season, but in his limited sample as a big leaguer he's been outstanding.
Jones, who is right-handed and a few months older than Henderson, is back on track after missing all of the 2025 season due to Tommy John surgery. Jones, who was a top-100 prospect prior to his debut in 2024, has pitched to a 3.81 ERA and 3.48 FIP in 52 innings across 11 starts this season with impressive peripheral numbers of his own (10 K/9, 2.6 BB/9). In contrast to Henderson, and like last night's starter, Bubba Chandler, Jones is a high velocity guy; his 98.4 average fastball velocity is in the top five percent of the league. Jones relies heavily on that fastball but gets a ton of whiffs with the slider he plays off of it. Jones is primarily a fastball/slider pitcher but mixes in a changeup every now and then and, a few times a game, a curveball.
With yesterday's trades, the Brewers have made some adjustments to their roster. Garrett Stallings' heroic outing on Monday night was rewarded with a demotion to Triple-A Nashville (life is tough for fringey pitchers), but the headline—not unexpected—is that Brandon Sproat will join him there.

Richard Childress Racing will have some adjustments to its driver lineups in 2027. Following Kyle Busch's tragic death, Austin Hill has driven the renumbered No. 33 Cup car. The organization has yet to name a replacement for 2027; however, their likely driver lineups for next year's NASCAR season have been revealed.
Hill is the leading candidate to drive the No. 33 Cup car next to Austin Dillon during the 2027 Cup Series season. With Hill's likely promotion to the Cup Series, it leaves two openings in the NASCAR O'Reilly Series. Chandler Smith is expected to drive one of the O'Reilly Series cars, with Carson Brown as the other favorite, as reported by FOX Sports' Bob Pockrass.
Smith appears to be at Richard Childress Racing either way, but Brown would likely replace Hill if he went to the Cup Series. After all, the current driver of the No. 21 O'Reilly car has been strong as Busch's replacement. Richard Childress Racing will undergo changes, and the likely lineups would be strong for the 2027 NASCAR season.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Spencer Horwitz hit a three-run double and the Pittsburgh Pirates extended their dominance over the Brewers this season, beating Milwaukee 4-3 on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series.
Pittsburgh has won six of seven games against the NL Central-leading Brewers this season.
The Pirates jumped on Brewers starter Brandon Sproat (3-7) in the third. Brandon Lowe and Bryan Reynolds singled and Esmerlyn Valdez walked. Horwitz followed with a bases-clearing double that staked Pittsburgh to a 3-0 lead.
The Pirates added a run in the fourth when Endy Rodriguez led off with a single and moved to third on consecutive wild pitches by Sproat, who was then replaced by Garrett Stallings, with Jacob Gonzalez still at-bat. Stallings eventually struck out Gonzalez before walking Henry Davis and giving up a soft bunt single to Jake Mangum that scored Rodriguez.
Pirates starter Bubba Chandler (4-8) held the Brewers without a hit until David Hamilton's single up the middle with two outs in the fifth. Joey Ortiz followed with another base hit that drove in Jake Bauers, who had walked leading off the inning.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are continuing their divisional road trip as they visit the first-place Milwaukee Brewers for the first matchup of a four-game set.
The Pirates are hitting the ball to Bubba Chandler for the start. He struggled in his last appearance against the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 28, pitching only four innings and giving up seven hits and three earned runs. He ended up getting the no-decision for the game because the Pirates stormed back from a 6-0 deficit in the eighth inning. However, they lost in the 12th inning by a score of 8-7.
Chandler pitched against the Brewers on July 11, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up five hits and two runs in a 3-2 victory at PNC Park.
The Brewers are sending Brandon Sproat out for the start. He pitched six innings, giving up six hits and three runs in his last start, but the Brewers lost 3-0 to the San Francisco Giants on the road. He also pitched against the Pirates on July 11, going three innings while giving up two hits and two earned runs as the Buccos won 7-6.
It's the first game after the trade deadline for the Pirates, so let's see how they perform.

Aug. 2—Brad Chandler has earned a few headlines in recent weeks as the new athletic director at Wright State.
Twenty-two years ago, the Livingston County Daily Press and Argus in Howell, Michigan, gave him attention for a different reason.
"Howell's scouting report had every indication that Novi's Brad Chandler was a good player," sports writer Andy Karl wrote in February 2004, "but the Highlanders didn't know about his shooting ability until Friday night.
"'He is one of the better guards in the league, and he was always in our scouting reports that he could drive well," Howell senior Eddie Chodkowski said. "He never showed that he can shoot in the games that we watched.' "
"Chandler sunk five 3-pointers en route to a 21-point effort, as Novi edged Howell in the closing seconds, 42-39."

With a 9-7 win over Flagstaff on July 17, the Chandler National Little League team earned the right to represent Arizona in the West Region bracket.
During the state tournament, Chandler's head coach Drew Breivogel, who has coached the team since 2021, thought that his team was on the wrong end of media attention thanks to some social media rankings that had his team buzzing.
"I think we had a target on our backs going through the state tourney," Breivogel said. "There was a post on social media that went out that had Top 25 teams in the nation ranked, and they had us at fifth in the nation. So I felt we had a little bit more pressure on us."
Regardless of how they arrived at the regional tournament, Breivogel believes no team will be fazed by the moment.
"I know all four teams are going to be unbothered," Breivogel said. "These kids are no stranger to big games, and because of social media and the connections they can make on travel teams, some of them know each other and have become friends off the field."

The Houston Texans still could be adding in a name or two ahead of their first preseason game.
According to the latest NFL transaction report, the Texans tried out both running backs Alexander Mattison and Hassan Haskins on Thursday. Neither player was signed to a contract, but the Texans could re-explore a deal later on this week.
The 28-year-old former Boise State running back has rushed for 2,370 yards during his five seasons in Minnesota and Las Vegas. During his rookie season, Mattison rushed for a career-high 700 yards that season, but he did not score a rushing touchdown and eventually lost the secondary role to Ty Chandler.
Haskins has only rushed for 229 yards and two touchdowns during his time with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Right now, the Texans have little room for a running back with the additions of David Montgomery and Noah Whittington, but it doesn't hurt to at least look.

Chandler Smith has been executing at a very high level in the NASCAR Truck Series during the 2026 season. With Front Row Motorsports thriving, there were rumors of Smith moving to the NASCAR Cup Series in place of Noah Gragson. However, Front Row Motorsports announced that he will not return to the organization in 2027.
So, what does Smith think about his Cup Series future? While running at NASCAR's top level is the ultimate goal, as long as Smith is behind the wheel, he will be happy. This interview was before the announcement.
"I just want the Lord's will, whatever that means," Smith said to NASCAR.com. "If that's to race trucks for the rest of my life, that's what I want to do. If the Lord obviously presents me and pushes me into an opportunity that lands in my lap and is just there and it's pretty evident, then I want to just submit myself and be a vessel. I mean that wholeheartedly, truthfully."
There was a time when Smith's future in NASCAR was uncertain, but it seems like he is set up for the 2027 NASCAR season. According to FOX Sports' Bob Pockrass, Smith is expected to sign with Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR O'Reilly Series. This means Smith is one step closer to the Cup Series.

Well, this one was a dud. Coming off a series sweep of the Cleveland Guardians, the Tampa Bay Rays' offense remained quiet at the plate and dropped the opener to the Texas Rangers by a score of 4-1.
Griffin Jax got the start for the Rays and was serviceable, allowing just a pair of runs over 5.2 innings of work. He punched out ten, walked three, and allowed five hits. Only one of the two runs he allowed was earned. The effort should have been enough to earn his seventh win of the season. Instead, he left with his eighth loss of the year.
The real story of the night was the Rays offense, or lack thereof. Outside of Aranda and Caminero, who each tallied a pair of hits, the rest of the lineup mustered just one hit. Cal Quantrill held the Rays to just one run an two hits over 5.1 innings of work. He punched out seven and walked just one.
Trailing 2-0, the Rays did threaten in the bottom of the fourth and for a brief moment it looked as if they were poised to take the lead and potentially send Cal Quantrill to the showers early. After a leadoff strikeout by Yandy Diaz, who's struggles at the plate continued Tuesday night, Jonathan Aranda singled and later advance to third on a double by Caminero. Mullins then reached on catcher's interference to load the bases for Chandler Simpson. Then, shockingly, Simpson found a way to hit into a groundball double play as he slapped a groundball right back to Quantrill who quickly threw home to start a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning.

For Travis Perry, playing basketball at Kentucky was the dream.
The former Lyon County star grew up watching the Wildcats and eventually received a scholarship offer from former head coach John Calipari, committing to the program and staying with Kentucky even after Calipari departed for Arkansas and Mark Pope took over.
Then after one season in Lexington, Perry made the difficult decision to leave the program he always dreamed of representing.
Perry entered the transfer portal with two hours remaining before the deadline, choosing to find a new opportunity after Kentucky's roster moves created a challenging path toward consistent playing time. Pope had already added Pitt transfer Jaland Lowe, Florida transfer Denzel Aberdeen, returning guards Otega Oweh and Collin Chandler, and five-star freshman Jasper Johnson to the backcourt.
Despite limited opportunities as a freshman, Perry showed flashes during the season, averaging 2.7 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.6 ****** ists per game while shooting 31.3% from the field, 32.1% from 3-point range and 80% from the free-throw line.

Paul Felder isn't confident Conor McGregor comes back better after UFC 329.
McGregor (22-7 MMA, 10-5 UFC) tore his right ACL and meniscus in the first kick he threw against Max Holloway two weeks ago at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was waved off after just 69 seconds as McGregor was unable to continue.
McGregor attempted to come back after breaking his left leg in July 2021. He was first scheduled to face Michael Chandler at UFC 303, but a broken pinky toe forced him out. Despite the slew of injuries and unfortunate events, McGregor insists on fighting again. He thinks with "today's regenerative medicine advancements and improved training methods," he can return as soon as summer of 2027.
"I do agree that with the advancements in medicine and things that you can do to support ligaments, and your knee, you can be back quick, but you're also way older than you were the first time you went through this surgery," Felder said on the "Believe You Me" podcast. "You didn't have a broken shin that you had already recovered from in the other leg.
"So I think yeah, he'll be back relatively quick, but I just don't know what your legs are going to be like after yet another big setback. I know he's trying to keep mentally strong. He keeps posting that he's not putting any substances in his body and I'm glad to hear that – good for him. But I just don't know if that's enough to get you back within a year, ready to go when you've had five years to get ready for this one, and your body still didn't seem to hold up to it."

For retirees, healthcare is one of the biggest expenses — and the costs keep spiraling.
On average, a 65-year-old who leaves the workforce this year may need $185,500 in savings to cover out-of-pocket healthcare expenses throughout retirement, up 7.5% from last year's expectation of $172,500, according to Fidelity's annual survey of estimated healthcare costs in retirement published on Tuesday.
"That number can feel intimidating, but the goal is not to scare people," Chandler Riggs, a financial planner at Fidelity Investments, told Yahoo Finance.
While panic isn't the aim, the reality is that few retirees have budgeted for that kind of payout. Yet roughly 15% of the average retiree's annual expenses will be health-related, per Fidelity.
"In our report published this spring, the expense that stood out for retirees was healthcare," Craig Copeland, director of wealth benefits research at the Employee Benefit Research Institute, told Yahoo Finance. "In fact, nearly 4 in 10 retirees said that these expenses were higher than they expected when they first retired."

Pirates rookie Bubba Chandler entered this game with a 4.77 ERA and the highest walk rate (13.1-percent) of any starter in baseball. Of course, that means the Yankees got blanked and drew just one walk in his 6.1 innings of work. Fortunately, Max Fried was even more dominant in his first start back from injury in over two months, the two starters trading zeroes long enough for the Yankees to strike against the Bucs’ bullpen. A Jasson Domínguez RBI double and Anthony Volpe RBI single in the seventh proved the decisive blows as the Yankees did just enough to win, 2-0, to split the doubleheader and win the series.
Fans of sharp defensive execution were in for a treat in the first inning. Fried looked to have given up a surefire double down the line in left to leadoff batter Nick Gonzales, but Cody Bellinger played the carom off the sidewall perfectly and fired an inch-perfect throw to Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second, who barely had to move his glove to apply the tag to Gonzales’ foot. The next batter Jared Triolo got down a decent bunt to the left, but the four-time Gold Glover Fried was quick off his mound to field it and fire a strike to first. Fried finished the inning with a swinging strikeout of Bryan Reynolds on an elevated 98.3 mph four-seamer, his fastest pitch of the season. That high water mark wouldn’t last long, as the next inning he punched out Marcell Ozuna looking on a 99 mph four-seamer.
Perhaps a side effect of Fried being on a pitch count of just 60 pitches — the amount planned for a second rehab start that got scrapped in lieu of him starting this game — Fried’s fastball was coming out hot the whole outing. It averaged over 96 mph this afternoon, which is almost two mph above his season average. It is particularly encouraging given that the bone bruise Fried suffered manifested itself as significantly reduced pitch velocity in the May 13th start against the Orioles that he was forced to depart after three innings. That’s a roundabout way of saying that Fried now appears fully healthy.
Fried’s day was finished after five scoreless innings allowing just one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts on 57 pitches, efficiently using nearly all of those 60 pitches he was allotted for this start. The four-seamer was as good as I’ve seen from him in pinstripes, and it wasn’t just the velocity. He was able to consistently paint the top ledge of the zone with the pitch, creating ample opportunity for chase and swing-and-miss against the secondaries which resulted in a 37-percent whiff rate on the day.

Max Fried made a triumphant return, pitching five scoreless and the Yankees lineup woke up late to defeat the Pirates, 2-0, in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader.
-Fried faced the minimum in the first thanks to Cody Bellinger gunning down Nick Gonzales trying to stretch a single into a double to lead off the game. The southpaw was locked in from there, allowing just a walk across the next two innings. Fried got through five innings against a formidable Pirates lineup, allowing just one hit and one walk.
The plan was for Fried to throw 60 pitches, and he wound up tossing 57 (37 strikes) while striking out seven batters.
-Unfortunately, the Yankees lineup was anemic once again for most of the game.
Against young right-hander Bubba Chandler, the Yankees mustered just two hits and got just two base runners in scoring position through the first four innings.
