Drew Brees went into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer, but he considered coming out of retirement with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. The former New Orleans Saints quarterback explored joining the Denver Broncos ahead of January's AFC Championship Game, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported.
The conversations followed Bo Nix's fractured ankle in Denver's Jan. 17 playoff victory over the Buffalo Bills. Then-offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and offensive **** istant Pete Carmichael, two of Brees' longtime coaches in New Orleans, contacted him about a potential return.
Brees had turned 47 just two days before Nix was injured. He wanted to test his body before committing to a comeback, but wrist discomfort during his workout ended the possibility, Schefter reported.
The initial talks happened without Sean Payton's involvement. Lombardi and Carmichael first wanted to see whether Brees was interested, and Payton didn't learn about their conversations until the offseason, according to Schefter.
Had Brees felt ready to return, Denver would've signed him and evaluated whether he or Jarrett Stidham would start, Schefter noted. One Broncos source explained to ESPN how the team viewed the possibility: "At a minimum, you sign (Brees), he's 1A or 1B. And Drew's point was: 'I know how to win a game like that.'"

Clemson did not find many answers offensively Saturday night, but the Tigers found enough to escape Memorial Stadium with their first victory of the season.
Freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds was forced into action after Christopher Vizzina suffered a left arm injury, while kicker Nolan Hauser provided most of Clemson's scoring in a 22-7 victory over Georgia Southern.
Hauser tied his career high by connecting on five field goals, hitting from 20, 34, 38, 50 and 49 yards. He improved to 6-for-6 this season and matched the five field goals he made against Florida State in 2024.
Reynolds settled in after replacing Vizzina, completing 16 of 27 passes for 178 yards while adding 36 rushing yards. He was especially effective before halftime, going 12-for-17 for 160 yards.
One of his biggest plays came on third-and-20 late in the second quarter when he found Tyler Brown for 20 yards. Reynolds then scrambled 16 yards to help set up a Hauser field goal that sent Clemson into halftime leading 16-7.

LAWRENCE — As Kansas football embarked this past Friday on the second year of D.K. McDonald serving as the team's lead defensive coordinator, in a season opener at home against LIU, the Jayhawks saw the group thrive in Lawrence.
Kansas, which went on to win 51-6, didn't allow any points until the fourth quarter — a pair of field goals. LIU only amassed 146 yards of total offense and went 2-for-13 on third downs. KU finished with 11 tackles for loss and three sacks, only allowing LIU to average 2.8 yards per play.

Russian veteran Karen Khachanov defeated an ailing third-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime Thursday in the second round of the US Open in four sets.
Khachanov, unseeded this year but a familiar face in the latter stages of big tournaments, beat Auger-Aliaissime 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
The 26-year-old Canadian, a two-time semi-finalist at Flushing Meadows, eked out a first-set tiebreaker against the hard-hitting Russian, who himself made the US Open semifinals in 2022.
But Auger-Aliassime, who appeared to give up quickly on some ***** , was undone by a rash of unforced errors in the subsequent sets. He made 47 in all, compared with 30 for Khachanov.

Former Newcastle defender John Anderson has a new favourite Magpies player in Amar Dedic following the full-back's impressive start on Tyneside.
After Newcastle beat Tottenham 2-0, Anderson praised a number of the individual performances from Mathias Jaissle's side.
"I'm always cautious," he told BBC Radio Newcastle. "It's only two games in, but there's more encouraging signs than there is negativity, that's for sure."
"Nico Gonzalez came in and had an excellent debut. Anthony Elanga looks like a new player compared with last season, when he came in for a lot of criticism. Yoane Wissa the same. They're like two new signings as well because of the way that they've played in the opening games. Lewis Miley came into midfield and just strolled - he and Gonzalez bossed it in there.

Tonight's White Sox starter, Luis Castillo, was pretty darn good until he wasn't. From 2019-2025, an ERA of 3.48 and a bWAR of 21.7. This year, something's gone off, I dunno what it is; his fastball's ticked down a notch or two, maybe that's it. Happens to all of us eventually. He throws it at around 95 now, with a slider/sinker/change. The slider's effective when it's working.
If you're like me, you think "wait, didn't Luis Castillo play for the Twins for awhile?" Yes, he did — that was a DIFFERENT Luis Castillo. The Twins one was a middle infielder and former All-Star/Gold Glover who was with the Twins in 2006/part of 2007. Mid-2007, the Twins traded him to the Metropolitans for Sweet Drew Butera. That experience was so groovy, the Twins later traded Johan Santana to the Mets for gold, frankincense, and myrrh. I don't know what myrrh is and neither do you. Here is the Twins' Luis Castillo:
So, we went to our first Twins game in a few years last week. It was four of us – Mrs. James had been given four free tickets by a season-ticket holder who was gonna be out of town (taking a kid to college). We asked two semi-retired friends if they wanted to come, and they said "sure."
One of those friends has trouble walking long distances, as Mrs. James does. So I asked here if anyone had some suggestions for a parking ramp that was convenient for people with mobility challenges. gintzer provided helpful information, and the parking situation worked out well, ***** ody had to walk too far. Thanks, gintzer!
After the game, we got in the wrong exit line, and were stuck there for awhile. But, not the end of the world. Our car can go into electric mode for situations like that, so we weren't burning gas. We listened to the radio, made jokes about the other cars/drivers, chatted about events in our lives, etc. Just what you'd want with your favorite friends.

1. FC Union Berlin have agreed to sell Ilyas Ansah to Hull City in a deal worth €21 million, with €17 million to be paid upfront, according to Kicker.
Ansah wasn't involved in Union Berlin's training session on Wednesday, as he was travelling to England to undergo a medical ahead of the move.

Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Elite golfers will compete in a two-week match play competition to cap the PGA Tour Championship Series starting in 2028, officials announced Tuesday.
The PGA Tour announced in June that it would revamp its playoff system with a new competitive structure, which includes the Championship Series and PGA Tour Challenger Series.
"From the beginning, the goal of the future competition committee was to create an easier-to-follow competitive model for our fans with greater consequence and a stronger season-long narrative," PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said in a news release.
"Throughout this process, we listened carefully to our fans, players and partners. One message came through clearly: the culmination of our season should be worthy of the journey it takes to get there."
Participants in the Championship Series will compete in 72-hole tournaments and be measured through a season-long points system. The season, which will run from February to August, will feature about two dozen events, including the Players Championship, majors and international team events.

The Los Angeles Rams have an interesting position battle that has been brewing for some time and should be approaching its conclusion this week. Stetson Bennett and Ty Simpson have been competing to be Matthew Stafford's backup this season, splitting preseason reps the last two weeks.
Bennett, who has seemingly led the battle throughout camp, lost some ground during the team's preseason opener against Kansas City, with Simpson having a marvelous performance in his debut. After only playing one quarter in the opener, Bennett got a half against the New Orleans Saints. He dazzled, throwing for 181 yards and rushing for two touchdowns in the blowout win.
With the team's preseason finale this week, Gary Klein of the LA Times reports that Bennett continues to get the initial reps with the second-team offense, while Simpson worked after him.

However, Haaland has decided to begin the new Premier League season with a new - and very different - look.

The Boston Red Sox lost 7-6 to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, but Willson Contreras is getting more headlines than the team's almost-come-from-behind win.
Contreras hit a ground ball to third base as the second batter in extra innings for the Red Sox, trailing by two runs. A run scored on his ground ball, and he was thrown out at first. He was hit with some boos by Red Sox fans for not hustling, and was seen jawing with a fan behind the dugout during the final at-bat of the game and after the game ended as well.
It's safe to ******* ume it had something to do with the play that elicited boos from the Red Sox faithful, but Contreras did not get into specifics.
"He was inviting me to dinner," Contreras said jokingly after the game, per The Boston Globe's Tim Healey. "I was like, 'No, I'm good with that.'"

SPARTANBURG, SC(WSPA)-Chris Vizzina met with the media for the first time this preseason following Tuesday's Clemson practice as he tries to nail down the starting quarterback job.
Vizzina was declared to have 'the pole position' by head coach Dabo Swinney entering preseason practice. He's battled Tait Reynolds for the starting job as Swinney has yet to declare a starter at the poisition.
The Tigers open the season at LSU Saturday September 5th.

The Cincinnati Bengals are set to host the Chicago Bears for a joint practice on Aug. 20, and second-year linebacker Demetrius Knight is treating it like a game.
This practice could serve as the final time the Bengals' starters – including Knight – get game-like reps in before the regular season begins on Sept. 13.
In 2025, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor opted not to have joint practice with another team. This year, Taylor wanted to do it, and it worked out for the Bengals to host the Bears ahead of the second preseason game on Aug. 22.
Knight sees this two-hour practice as a chance to get better, and he's doing everything he can to maximize the opportunity.
"If you're not treating it like a game, you're not taking it seriously," Knight said." You're not (treating) it as a professional. You're in this position to grow. You get a chance to go against another team, and it's not an opportunity that you take lightly."

It feels like every year there are a few "training camp darlings," players who catch the eyes of coaches, media, and fans alike as they show glimpses of what could possibly be during the regular season.
Through the first few weeks of Jets camp, it's clear that receiver Isaiah Williams is one of those players.
Williams is no stranger to his teammates or to fans. In fact, he was named the Jets' team MVP in 2025 for his work as a returner. During his first season in New York, Williams had 396 punt return yards and two touchdowns, plus an additional 837 yards as a kick returner.
But the 25-year-old has been making his mark during this year's camp as a receiving option, making his share of standout plays.
"Training camp's been going great," Williams said on Monday. "It's been good to just every day go out there compete against our defense. Last week it was good to go out and compete against the Bucs, but it's been good. Barcelona are set to part ways with promising midfielder Tommy Marques, with Portuguese club Braga reaching an agreement to sign the 19-year-old on a permanent transfer.
Transfer market specialist Fabrizio Romano has given the move his trademark "Here we go", confirming that the agreement between Barcelona and Braga is now in place.
The deal will see Barcelona receive €10 million upfront, with a further €2 million available through add-ons.
Marques has already accepted Braga's proposal despite attracting interest from two German clubs.

Styles played during the opening series, a 14-play Miami touchdown drive that immediately tested the young linebacker and the defense. He finished his appearance with three tackles but wasn't a major factor in slowing down the Dolphins' offense.
Still, the most noteworthy part of Styles' debut might have been what was on his helmet.
Styles wore the green dot, meaning he was responsible for receiving the defensive play calls from the sideline and communicating them to his teammates. Giving that responsibility to a rookie in his first preseason action showed the level of trust the coaching staff already has in his ability to process information and command the defense.

The Dallas Cowboys won their first preseason game of the year. It has been almost a decade since that sentence was true.
We spoke in the lead up to Saturday night's preseason opener about how the Cowboys hadn't won the first game of any preseason since 2017. For context that was the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game when Jerry Jones was a part of the HOF class.

The most debated topic in all of football, or so it seems, is the competition for the Browns quarterback position. Saturday was another step toward answering that question.
In the Browns' preseason loss to the Bears, both players got an opportunity to show where they are. The Bears didn't play any of their starters in the first half, and in the second half, the Browns were down a lot of their depth pieces.
The playing field was never level; even so, there are some important takeaways.
Deshaun Watson was scheduled to get the entire first half, and he got off on a really strong start. After Cleveland went three-and-out in their first possession, the offense opened up.
Watson showed some arm strength, connecting well with KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston. One of his best plays of the first half came on 3rd and four; he checked into a nice man-beating concept and delivered a great throw to Harold Fannin Jr. against the blitz, but Fannin dropped it.
