Luis Campusano added a two-run homer for the Padres, who will go for a three-game sweep on Wednesday behind trade deadline acquisition Robbie Ray. The Padres lost two of three in Milwaukee in mid-May.
The Padres pulled into a tie with Philadelphia and Arizona for the third NL wild-card spot after winning their fourth straight game and 14th of 18.
Rengifo was released by the Brewers on June 23 and signed a minor league deal with the Padres six days later. He made his Padres debut on July 10.

Safety Coby Bryant, whom the Chicago Bears signed in free agency to a three-year deal reportedly worth $40 million, is now expected to miss four to six months after undergoing surgery for a knee injury that initially was reported to sideline him for eight to 10 weeks.
Second-year Bears head coach Ben Johnson provided the updated prognosis on Tuesday, telling reporters that Bryant's procedure took place this past Friday, per ESPN's Courtney Cronin.
It's possible the Bears could get Bryant back in time for the end of the season; however, his extended absence is a hearty blow to defensive coordinator Dennis Allen's unit.
This story is being updated.

At the outset, it's getting exhausting having to write about these things again, but alas, here we are.
In 1991, feminist journalist Susan Faludi wrote a book entitled Backlash: The Undeclared War Against American Women, where she contended that when women achieve social, political and cultural progress, a vicious backlash follows, usually manifesting from a sub-section of men who feel genuinely threatened by accomplished women.
This is by no means an unfamiliar phenomenon.
All four waves of feminism that brought major advances (the right to vote, reproductive rights, women ascending to leadership, #MeToo , etc.) were met with a full-throated effort to reverse them, whether through the political processes, acts of violence or online misogyny.
Now, that same dynamic has developed due to the soaring popularity of the WNBA in its 30th season.

Ferran Torres appears set for a major move this summer, with TeamTalk reporting that the Barcelona forward has agreed personal terms with Paris Saint-Germain ahead of a proposed transfer. The Spain international, who has attracted attention from **** nal and Tottenham Hotspur, is now waiting for the clubs to complete what is expected to be a deal worth around €50million (£43m / $58m).
The 26-year-old is entering the final year of his current Barcelona contract, a detail that has clearly shaped the market around him. PSG have moved quickly, identifying Torres as a player capable of strengthening their central attacking options after the departure of Goncalo Ramos to AC Milan earlier in the window.
Photo IMAGO
According to the report, there was firm interest from north London. "We can confirm that both **** nal and Tottenham Hotspur showed an interest in bringing the Spain international back to England, with a return to the Premier League having been a genuine consideration for the player." That line underlines that this was no routine check-in, there was authentic Premier League intent.
Yet the direction of travel changed once PSG entered the picture. "However, once PSG made their approach, Torres spoke with head coach Luis Enrique and that conversation proved decisive." In elite recruitment, these moments often matter as much as fee or wages. A trusted coach, a defined role and a convincing sporting project can tilt the balance very quickly.

Memphis football's season opener is only three weeks away.
The Tigers held a "Fan Fest" event on Aug. 8 at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. It was a rescheduled event that was supposed to take place in the spring but was postponed because of weather, and it was also the first time for a lot of Memphis fans to see the 2026 team in action.
Coach Charles Huff had warned beforehand that the portion of practice open to the public wouldn't exactly be groundbreaking stuff. It was mostly special teams drills, and it took place a day after the Tigers held a scrimmage.
Still, it was a reminder that the season is close. Here's what we saw.
It's not surprising in any way that the quarterback competition between Air Noland and Marcus Stokes is ongoing, but this was the first chance to see them in action. Fans got to see a few seven-on-seven drills in which each got chances with different sets of receivers.

Miralem Pjanic played a role in Kerim Alajbegović choosing to move to Juventus after coming very close to signing for Chelsea, but the extent of his influence remains a point of interest. Chelsea are one of the big-spending clubs and have become an attractive destination for young players, with the Blues giving them opportunities to prove themselves on the pitch.
Chelsea were keen to sign Alajbegović from Bayer Leverkusen, and he had even agreed to move to the London club. However, before the transfer could be completed, Juventus hijacked the move and secured his signature.
The Bianconeri have now added Alajbegović to Luciano Spalletti's squad, bringing in one of the most exciting teenagers in world football. His arrival represents a major coup for Juventus, particularly after Chelsea had appeared to be close to completing the transfer.
Juventus had an important connection that could help convince the youngster to choose Turin. Pjanic, a fellow Bosnian, was able to offer his perspective on the club and explain what he believed the move could mean for Alajbegović.
Pjanic has now broken his silence on the role he played in the transfer and suggested that Juventus is already a club capable of selling itself to players they want to recruit.

The 26-year-old has reached an agreement in principle over a new deal, with the final details now being completed.
The breakthrough comes after months of uncertainty surrounding the 26-year-old's future, with his previous contract due to expire next summer.
Arsenal had been monitoring the situation and exploring the possibility of a move should contract talks fail to progress, but the Premier League champions are now expected to turn their attention elsewhere.
Real Madrid have been confident throughout the negotiations that Vinicius wanted to remain at the Santiago Bernabéu despite interest from several of Europe's leading clubs.

Day 7 of Cleveland Browns training camp took place Wednesday, August 5.
1. A Change at Center: Cleveland has been rolling with Elgton Jenkins at center, but that changed today, as not only was he sitting out, but Parker Brailsford was sidelined too. Luke Wypler jumped the depth chart to practice with the ones.
2. Watson Finds a Groove: It's a low bar, but the word is that QB Deshaun Watson had his best practice session by far. The stat tracker shows him throwing 7 touchdown passes, but don't be in awe of that, since some were goal line passes in 7 on 7 drills. Nonetheless, he was at least sharp in the basics on the day, which is a step forward.
3. Look Out, Malachi Corley: Last year, we saw WR Malachi Corley have success on jet sweeps. However, in addition to catching everything coming his way, WR Denzel Boston got the carry on both an end around and jet sweep today. To my surprise, it was also noted that he's been taking some reps on the return team too.
4. Growing List: Earlier, we mentioned that two centers missed practice. But the injury list in general is growing (although not everyone is an injury, like TE Joe Royer).

We asked Wrexham AFC fans for their views on what the Red Dragons still need to do before the start of the new Championship season in just under two weeks' time.
Here are some of the replies.
Mick: We must focus on improving our defensive record from last season. It is great to see a highly rated right wing back as our first new signing. Now we need to prioritise a top-class keeper but keep hold of Arthur Okonkwo too. We also need a commanding centre half and a ball playing defensive midfielder. Not asking for much really!
Al: We must still add probably a new keeper, a centre back and a striker who can score 15 goals in a season.
Tim: Phil Parkinson seems desperate for a new goalkeeper, but I am not sure why. I don't think we need major surgery hopefully the likes of Lewis Brunt and Zak Vyner can step up and we stay relatively injury free. Last season, we were an unknown quantity, but teams will be savvier against us now.

Sophie Cunningham's comments on transgender athletes participating in sports have reverberated all across the country. In a July 21 ESPN profile, Cunningham said, "I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I'm like, 'I never once said that.' I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men."
Cunningham's stance has gone viral and led to rallies and counterrallies, a statement from the White House, and had people from all corners give their takes on it, including a conflicting one from her own head coach.
Now, Aryna Sabalenka, the world's No. 1 tennis player in the WTA, is giving her take on transgender participation in light of a new WTA policy.
"The WTA recently announced that, you know, the players will take a one-time gender test. How do you feel about that?" a reporter asked Sabalenka. "The first pro league to go in that direction."
"I think it's really important to keep the fairness in our tour, and it's obvious that biologically, right, the men are way stronger than women," Sabalenka responded.

Mauricio Pochettino has unfinished business with the U.S. men's national team.
Pochettino has signed a new, four-year contract with U.S. Soccer, the federation announced Monday, Aug. 3. This will be his first full World Cup cycle with the USMNT, having taken over the team less than two year's before this summer's tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
"It's a great opportunity because the potential is there," Pochettino said during a small roundtable with reporters before his new deal was announced.
"We were so close. That gap with the best teams in the world is not so big," Pochettino said. "To reduce that gap, I think it's possible. I think it's possible because we have the talent, we have the organization."

Elfyn Evans extended his lead at the top of the World Rally Championship standings to 30 points as Toyota team-mate Sami Pajari won his home event in Finland.
Evans and co-driver Scott Martin finished in third place for Toyota despite a roll on Saturday, which ended their chances of victory, and hold a healthy margin with four rounds remaining.
The 37-year-old, who has been a runner-up in the WRC five times, lost two minutes when he ran wide on a corner, rolled and got stuck in a ditch on the 14th stage of 20 in the rally.
With the help of spectators - including his dad, former rally driver Gwyndaf, who just happened to be spectating near where he crashed - Evans was able to return to service where Toyota mechanics repairs his GR Yaris.
"A surreal set of circumstances, but we owe the guys who fixed the car because without them the rally would have been over," Evans said after completing the rally.

Federico Chiesa's Liverpool future is back under the spotlight, with Foot Mercato reporting fresh interest from Atletico Madrid. For a player who has lived on the fringes at Anfield, the latest developments feel significant, particularly at a time when Liverpool are recalibrating under Andoni Iraola.
The numbers from Chiesa's 2025/26 Premier League campaign offer a compelling counterpoint to his bit-part status. In around 318 league minutes, the Italy international produced two goals and one **** ist. On a per 90 basis, those figures point to sharp attacking efficiency, while his non-penalty expected goals return suggests a player still capable of generating high-value moments in the final third.
That is why this situation carries intrigue. The issue around Chiesa has rarely been productivity, it has been availability in the starting picture. He made only one league start last season and, across two years on Merseyside, managed 36 appearances in all competitions with only five starts. Those totals explain why external interest has emerged, even if the player's own stance has remained relatively clear.
According to the report, Atletico Madrid have made an attempt for Chiesa and continue to monitor him closely. Diego Simeone is said to appreciate the profile, which is understandable given Chiesa's direct running, intensity and ability to attack **** e from wide positions. Any firm progression from the Spanish side appears linked to the outcome of the Julian Alvarez situation, which remains central to their summer planning.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino gestures during his visit to the new Concentration Hotel of the Colombian Football Federation in Barranquilla, Colombia, on February 24, 2026. The Mexican city of Guadalajara is trying to reassure football fans ahead of the World Cup, which begins in 100 days, after being shaken by the violence sparked on February 22 by the death of powerful cartel boss Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera. (Photo by David SALAZAR / AFP via Getty Images)
Gianni Infantino has built his presidency on an ability to push through ambitious —and often controversial — changes despite widespread resistance. His abrupt decision to abandon plans to sell a stake in FIFA's commercial rights to private equity marks a rare and significant political defeat, exposing the limits of his authority and raising new questions about his future leadership.
The plan itself was unprecedented. By placing FIFA's most valuable commercial ****** ets — including the World Cups — into a $20 billion company with outside investors holding a 20% stake, Infantino was attempting to fundamentally reshape how the planet's most lucrative and popular sporting event is financed and managed.
Infantino had argued that private capital would have accelerated investment and unlock long-term revenue. Critics, however, saw something much more sinister: The commercialization of soccer's crown jewel.
What ultimately doomed the plan was not simply opposition, but the breadth and speed of that opposition. Within days, UEFA, European soccer's governing body, voted to boycott FIFA competitions, an extraordinary escalation from an organization that has frequently clashed with Infantino but rarely challenged his authority.

Aliyah Boston is listed as probable for the Indiana Fever's game Friday vs. the Portland Fire with a right lower leg injury.
Fellow forward Monique Billings (left hip) is listed as probable, as is Caitlin Clark (back). Damiris Dantas (left knee) did not travel with the team and has already been ruled out for both Friday's game in Portland and Sunday's in Minneapolis.
Boston had to be helped off the floor late in the second quarter of Wednesday's 105-95 win over the Seattle Storm after she tripped over Flau'jae Johnson's foot while pursuing a pass from Caitlin Clark. Boston appeared to land directly on her right knee and was taken to the Fever locker room.
She was listed as questionable for the second half, but did not participate.
Fever coach Stephanie White said it "wasn't really worth the risk" to play Boston after halftime, adding: "We just want to be very conservative and make sure that she's good to go."

Last week, the Carolina Panthers defense suffered quite a blow when they lost outside linebacker Nic Scourton to a season-ending ACL tear. The injury occurred in the very first session of training camp, and has left a hole off the edge.
In Scourton's absence, the Panthers need several other players to step up—including fellow second-year edge rusher Princely Umanmielen.
On that score, Umanmielen has one very big fan—free agent-pickup Jaelan Phillips. When speaking with reporters after Tuesday's practice, Phillips shared some very high praise for Umanmielen.
"He's probably the best pass rusher on our team," Phillips stated. "I think that he is extremely naturally gifted. And I think that as he continues to develop, he can be a very special player.
"I think that he already has crazy attributes, and he's definitely learning, he's young. So I'm excited to watch him grow."

FRISCO, Texas — Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager hit a solo homer and made a nifty defensive play in a rehab appearance for Double-A Frisco after being sidelined all this month because of lower back inflammation.
Seager is on the injured list for the third time this season, and has missed 52 games for Texas — one more than he has played for the AL West-leading Rangers. They are 24-28 without the two-time World Series MVP.
Seager went 1 for 2 with a walk and a strikeout against Corpus Christi, homering in the fifth before being replaced in the field after that inning. The top of the third ended when the shortstop made a backhanded stop in the hole and made a strong throw to first for the out.
His last game had been June 30 at Toronto, when he was removed in the first inning because of back discomfort. The rehab appearance came after Seager took live batting practice the previous two days before Rangers home games.
It wasn't immediately clear when he would rejoin the big league club.

On Thursday afternoon, a French ultrarunner hustling through the remote mountains of Washington State reached the Canadian border and tagged the northernmost end of the Pacific Crest Trail, completing the 2,600-mile route in record time.
Aurélien Sanchez, 35, set out June 7 from the U.S.-Mexico border with the goal of setting the so-called fastest known time on the famous wilderness trail, which weaves through mountain ranges in California, Oregon and Washington.
It's a competitive record, having fallen three times in the past decade and been unsuccessfully attempted by ultrarunners and speed hikers on several more occasions. The record Sanchez had to beat - 46 days, 12 hours and 50 minutes - was set in 2023 by Belgian ultrarunner Karel Sabbe, who covered nearly 57 miles per day on average.
According to Sanchez's GPS tracker, he completed the mammoth trek from Southern California to the Canadian border in
45 days and about 15 hours, coming in roughly one day earlier than the previous record.

The Jacksonville Jaguars saw tight end Brenton Strange have his best season yet in 2025, and he was rewarded accordingly with a three-year, $36 million contract extension last month. By total contract value, he is now among the highest-paid tight ends in the NFL.
That payday for Strange underscores his importance to the Jaguars' offense, and Pro Football Focus recently recognized his impact as well. In their ranking of the top 32 tight ends, PFF had Strange just narrowly miss the top 10, coming in at No. 11.
"Strange had the best year of his young career in his third season with the Jaguars. His 73.4 PFF run-blocking grade placed fifth among all tight ends in the league, while his 77.6 PFF receiving grade was 11th. Strange also averaged 1.70 yards per route run, the 10th-best rate for tight ends."
As good as Strange was last year, there is good reason to believe he will only get even better in 2026. The most obvious reason is that it will be his second year in Liam Coen's offensive system, while last season, he — and the rest of the team — were learning throughout the year. Strange has already spoken about feeling more comfortable heading into Year 2 under Coen.
The do-it-all skill set that Strange brings to the Jaguars' offense adds some unpredictability to this unit as well, opening up the playbook for Coen.

SOUTHPORT, England – Matt Kuchar was five holes away from immortality.
Five holes away at the 2017 British Open here at Royal Birkdale from having his name permanently inscribed on the Claret Jug, golf's oldest trophy, and a spot in the British Open field until he turns 60. Instead, he got steamrolled by Jordan Spieth and one of the great final-round flourishes in major championship history and failed to qualify for the 154th Open this week. From nearly being the Champion Golfer of the Year to not in the field since 2021 and never really sniffing the ******* le again.
"It felt like it was in my hands and all of a sudden Jordan Spieth put on a show and claimed it for himself," Kuchar tells Golfweek in a recent phone interview. "Listen, I got beat but it's tough when at some point you feel like you got that close. I think that makes it even tougher."
