Chelsea return to Stamford Bridge on Saturday looking to respond to last weekend's defeat at ****** nal, but Hull City will offer a very different kind of test.
Xabi Alonso's side have scored eight goals in their opening three Premier League games and followed that with a 6-3 League Cup win over Leeds in midweek. Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and João Pedro have already become the main attacking reference points, while Chelsea have scored inside the opening five minutes in all three of their league matches.
Hull, though, have built their impressive start in almost the opposite way.
Sergej Jakirović's newly-promoted side have taken seven points from games against Manchester United, Coventry and Aston Villa without conceding a goal. They remain the only Premier League team yet to be breached this season.
The clean sheets do not mean Hull have dominated games. They had just 26.5% possession against Villa and have regularly been happy to defend in a compact 5-4-1, give the opposition the ball and wait for opportunities to counter. Goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis has already played more passes into the opposition half than any other Hull player, which says plenty about their willingness to go direct.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Jeff McNeil legged out an infield single to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Athletics beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 on Monday night after blowing a four-run lead.
Henry Bolte homered and scored three times from the leadoff spot for the A's, who have won five of six following a five-game losing streak. The rookie drew three walks and stole three bases.
Andrés Giménez hit a tying solo homer in the ninth for the Blue Jays (72-73), who remained a game behind Cleveland for the last American League wild card. Alejandro Kirk also went deep but Toronto ace Dylan Cease gave up five runs — four earned — in five innings.

The NFL had an offseason in which there was a record-tying 10 head coaching changes.
Next offseason might not see that many changes, but there will be some. NFL teams have become increasingly impatient and quick to change head coaches. There's even a notion that Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur, who has won 65.4% of his games and has just one losing season out of seven, could be on the hot seat if the Packers don't do well enough this season. Whether that comes to pass, it shows how tough of a profession it can be.
Here are the coaches on the hottest seats heading into the season:
Glenn was a candidate to be one and done after a very disheartening 3-14 season. Glenn stayed, but he replaced 12 of the 22 **** istants from last year's staff. That type of turnover is a clear indication that the head coach needs to show improvement the following season. If the Jets are as uncompetitive as they were in Glenn's first season, it seems likely that a change would be made. And the Jets have plenty of roster holes heading into the season.

Lautaro Martinez scored a stoppage-time winner as Inter Milan came from behind to beat Napoli 3-2 and maintain their perfect start to the new Serie A season.
Napoli, with former AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri back at San Siro, had looked in control after two goals in the ******* e of five minutes early in the second half from Matteo Politano and Rasmus Hojlund.
Martinez, though, started the fightback before Marcus Thuram headed an equaliser with eight minutes left and the Inter captain then ******* ed victory in added time after Napoli failed to clear a corner.
It was a lively opening, with Andy Diouf's low shot from the edge of the area forcing Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret into an early save.
The visitors, missing Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay after it was revealed he needs a minor heart procedure, saw Hojlund's stabbed effort at the far post blocked by Martinez in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

The Tennessee Volunteers will be honoring Dolly Parton with a helmet sticker this season, coach Josh Heupel announced.
Parton, a Tennessee native, died on Tuesday, Aug. 25 after a brief battle with cancer. She was 80.
"I'd be remiss if I didn't also talk about the passing of Dolly Parton," Heupel said. "All that she's meant across the world, this country, and certainly, the queen of East Tennessee — a lady that was extremely proud of her roots."
The iconic singer grew up in Sevierville, roughly 30 miles east of Knoxville, where the University of Tennessee is located.
"You look at (Dolly's) impact, you know, just her ability to give back, make an impact to people, certainly here in East Tennessee. She means a lot to people across this country," Heupel said. "We'll be wearing a sticker patch on the back of our helmet to recognize her accomplishments and everything that she's meant."

For the Red Sox, this weekend offered a tantalizing opportunity: Take three out of four in the Bronx against the Yankees, and Boston would secure the season tiebreaker and leap its rival in the standings. It would've been a fulfilling culmination of sorts for a club that was, just a few months ago, very down and incredibly out.
Instead, the Sox were outplayed and outclassed in a disappointing series loss that likely complicates their path to postseason glory. An ugly 16-1 drubbing on Sunday, in which infielder Andruw Monasterio had to throw the ninth inning, was the frustrating cherry on the **** mer sundae in which the Yankees took three out of four. For New York, it was a reassuring result, one that further solidified the current AL East pecking order.
The AL East-leading Rays swept the Padres this weekend, pushing their division lead to 4.5 games over New York. That leaves the Yankees atop the wild-card race, despite having the second-best record in the American League. They're now four games clear of Boston, which is five games safe of the next-closest club in the wild-card race.
Yes, there's still a month or so of games to play. But the playoff picture is coming into focus, with this weekend's result making a Yankees-Red Sox wild-card rematch a very, very likely outcome.
Last postseason, Cam Schlittler elevated himself from nice story to world-beater with a masterful, eight-inning, 12-strikeout performance against the Red Sox in AL wild-card Game 3. Less than a year later, the Massachusetts kid has evolved into a co-front-runner for the AL Cy Young Award alongside Toronto's Dylan Cease. On Friday against his boyhood team, Schlittler further reinforced his awards case with six brilliant shutout innings in a nailbiting 1-0 Boston victory. It was a reminder that, in a rivalry overflowing with accomplished hurlers, Schlittler is top of the heap right now.

The deadline for all NFL teams, including the Washington Commanders, to narrow down their roster from 90 players to 53 is today by 6 p.m. EST. That makes cut day the biggest day in the NFL for waivers. It is important to note that players on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and injured reserve (IR) do not count toward the 53 players on the active roster.
Cut day impacts seasoned veterans differently than younger players. If an NFL player has accrued at least four seasons of experience, instead of hitting the waiver wire, they will simply become a free agent. Accruing a season requires being on an NFL roster for at least six games; this also counts being on the team's PUP list or IR.
For any player who has not accrued at least four seasons of experience, they will hit the waiver wire. This means any team in the NFL can claim them and inherit their current contract. However, waiver-wire priority is based on each team's record last season.
Because the Commanders finished the season with a 5-12 record, they are No. 7 on the priority list. This means that as long as none of the six teams ahead of them - the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, the Arizona Cardinals, the Tennessee ******* ans, the New York Giants and the Cleveland Browns - do not put in a waiver wire request for a player Washington puts in a request for, the Commanders will get that player.
The waiver wire period lasts from 6 p.m. EST today until 1 p.m. EST tomorrow on Mon. Aug. 31. If a player is not claimed on the waiver wire, they will become a free agent and can sign with any NFL team.

Ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr., Hymn chased speedy pacesetter Tip Top Thomas through the opening portions of the seven-furlong Grade 1 sprint, made a huge surge coming down the stretch to take the lead and held on for the win over a trio of late-rushing challengers Saturday during the Travers undercard at Saratoga Race Course.
It was the first career Grade 1 win for Hymn, whose career transformed when trainer Ron Moquett made the decision to make him a gelding. Since that move, he's won four of his five starts.
"I thought he was a beautiful, wonderful horse from Day 1, and I hated having to geld him," Moquett said. "When I did, I said, 'Now, let's just make him a racehorse and go try to win the Breeders' Cup.'"

Now that the Philadelphia Eagles' preseason schedule is over, the team's focus shifts to cutting their roster down to the regular season 53-player limit before the 6:00 PM Eastern deadline on Sunday, August 30. Here's our best effort at projecting what the INITIAL roster is going to look like. The Birds will likely make some tweaks (injured reserve placements, trades, waiver claims, etc.) before they actually play the Washington Commanders in Week 1. Note that this activity is about predicting what the Eagles WILL do as opposed to what we necessarily think they should do.
QUARTERBACK: Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee, Cole Payton (3) [3]
Hurts threw a lot of interceptions this summer, yes, but I challenge you to find a daily practice observer who feels like he had a bad camp. On the whole, the good outweighed the bad. It seems like he's embracing the new offensive direction. The Eagles are hoping Hurts doesn't get, well, hurt … because the depth behind him is very uninspiring. There was no clear winner from the Eagles' training camp backup quarterback battle. McKee somehow looked worse than ever after previously showing encouraging signs in previous years. Dalton looks somewhat physically diminished, which tracks for a quarterback entering his age 39 season. Maybe he gets traded … but what price is he even fetching at this point? I wonder if the Eagles might trade both Dalton (for very meager draft pick compensation) AND McKee (included in a deal for another team's quarterback, such as Anthony Richardson or J.J. McCarthy)? Payton has shown some promise but the Eagles didn't really do a good job of getting him more action in the preseason. Utilizing him on special teams in the final preseason game points to them trying to find a role for him. This is a tough position to figure out.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Three Maher sisters were finally together again on the pitch Thursday night, and the youngest had herself quite a ***** berland girls soccer debut.
Shea Maher scored two goals inside the final five minutes to decide this Division I clash of contenders against North Kingstown. The Clippers left Perry Athletic Complex with all three points thanks to a talented newcomer.
Maher found the net in the 75th minute and converted a penalty kick soon after to push ***** berland over the top. The Skippers had no time to respond in a 2-0 opening defeat, a match that's been seemingly inevitable in November's playoffs multiple times in recent seasons.

Maher's solo run and left-footed finish on the opener would have been enough. She added some insurance from the spot just moments later, drilling a right-footed shot into the lower left corner. A **** le shot is on the line for Mauricio Ruffy as well at UFC 331.
Ruffy (14-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) meets top contender Arman Tsarukyan (23-3 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in a five-round co-main event on Sept. 19 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
Tsarukyan has long been considered the rightful No. 1 contender, whereas Ruffy has a big opportunity to knock him off his position. Ruffy scored two-straight knockouts of Rafael Fiziev and Michael Chandler, and aims to leapfrog other contenders by beating Tsarukyan – at least that's what he's been told.
"That's the agreement with the UFC," Ruffy told Fox Sports Australia through an interpreter. "That's the last step to make. Let's make it happen."
Tsarukyan is a big favorite over Ruffy, and the Brazilian is aware of how good he is. However, after moving camps to train with UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, Ruffy feels he has bridged the gap to compete with the division's elite.

After a sixth-inning blast by Shay Whitcomb, the San Francisco Giants' third two-run home run of their series finale against the Cincinnati Reds, Reds.TV ****** yst and former pitcher Jeff Brantley suggested that the Reds were on the verge of being swept by a Triple-A team.
"I would think that the San Francisco Giants have got to be happy," Brantley said during the broadcast. "They've basically brought their team up from Sacramento and they're hitting the ball."

The Detroit Red Wings described Steve Yzerman's July departure from the general manager's chair as a leadership transition.
Elliotte Friedman now says the decision may have been considerably less mutual than it appeared.
During Tuesday's edition of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, Friedman revisited Yzerman's exit and offered an important clarification about what he believes happened behind the scenes.
"Initially I thought that maybe Yzerman resigned. I don't believe that's the case. I believe the Red Wings made the choice to move on," Friedman said on 32 Thoughts.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Angel Reese rebounded her way into the record books not once, but twice in one night.
Reese set a WNBA record with 26 rebounds in the Atlanta Dream's 78-71 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Monday, pushing her past the season record in the same game.
"Last time I was here, I didn't miss any shots. Tonight I couldn't hit (anything) so I knew I was going be able to get them on the rebounding side," Reese told the postgame show. "I just want to be there for my team. Offensively, defensively, whatever it takes to win."
Reese surpassed Chamique Holdsclaw's record of 24 rebounds, set on May 23, 2003 for Washington. She now has 458 rebounds on the season, seven more than A'ja Wilson's mark set in 2024.
Reese secured her WNBA-leading 27th double-double of the season on a basket with 13.9 seconds left in the game that gave her 11 points.

Australia responded to their nine-wicket defeat in the first Test at Darwin by bowling Bangladesh out for 64 on the opening day of the second and final Test in Mackay on Saturday.

After winning the toss, Australia captain Pat **** mins chose to field and Mitchell Starc made an impact with the first ball. He dismissed Shadman Islam for a duck, registering his ninth first-over wicket in Test cricket and moving past England's James Anderson, who had eight such dismissals.

Starc then continued his spell, taking five wickets inside the first seven overs as Bangladesh slumped to 12/5. It was the sixth-fastest five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

. Starc took five wickets in the first 45 minutes as the visitors slipped to 12/5 before reaching lunch at 35/6.

Cummins added three wickets for 25 runs as Bangladesh slipped further to 39/9. The visitors, however, managed to avoid their lowest-ever Test total. Their lowest score remains 43 against West Indies in 2018.

Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for 64, with Starc finishing with 6/12 from 10 overs.

The spell also took Starc past South African great Dale Steyn's 439 Test wickets. With 441 wickets, Starc is now the 10th-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. He has taken 19 five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket match hauls, with best figures of 7/58.

For Bangladesh, the collapse came after Australia had been beaten by nine wickets in Darwin in the opening Test. The second Test therefore began with Australia in control and Bangladesh under pressure with the bat.

Iraola will take charge of his first Premier League game as Liverpool manager at Newcastle on Sunday after arriving from Bournemouth to replace the sacked Arne Slot in the close-season.

Winning a Super Bowl does not automatically make a player "clutch." Some players have won multiple championships without producing particularly memorable performances on the biggest stage, while others have delivered extraordinary numbers, game-winning plays and fourth-quarter performances that changed Super Bowl history.
To identify the 15 most clutch players in Super Bowl history, the emphasis here is on what actually happened inside the Super Bowl: late-game production, efficiency, touchdowns, yards, turnovers, game-winning scores, record-setting performances and performances under extreme pressure. This is not simply a list of players with the most rings.
Brady is the obvious starting point, but the statistical case goes well beyond his seven championships. He owns Super Bowl records for passing yards (3,039), completions (277), attempts (432) and touchdown passes (21). He also owns the single-game Super Bowl passing record with 505 yards in Super Bowl LII and threw for 466 yards during the Patriots' historic comeback in Super Bowl LI.

The Dallas Cowboys started their game against the Seattle Seahawks allowing a 13-play drive for 80 yards that lasted over seven minutes. It felt like watching the 2025 defense, but from then on they didn't allow a single point, forced two three-and-outs, and conjured up a goal-line stand on a four-and-out to seal the victory.
The defense was terrific overall, going from 19 missed tackles in last season's first preseason game to zero against Seattle.
They held the Seahawks offense to 14 first downs, only two yards per pass, under four yards per rush attempt, and one touchdown in four red-zone trips. Seattle managed only 29 passing yards after the opening drive and went under 50% on third- and fourth-down conversions. The incredible play leaves plenty of options for players to see their stock rise on the Dallas defense, but here are the top three.
The post-game signing of Von Miller makes every snap more important for every edge not named Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezieruaku, and Malachi Lawrence. James Houston could be in a battle for one spot with Sam Williams, Tyrus Wheat, Isaiah Land, and Marist Liufau, and he stepped up against the Seahawks once again.
He had three tackles, a sack, a tackle for a loss, and a QB hit. Houston was the highest-rated defensive player by Pro Football Focus (PFF) with an 86.5 overall grade. He was already a tough cut after how he produced last season, but his first game of 2026 was another step to the 53-man roster.

For a roster filled with established veterans, young players, and newcomers competing for jobs, the preseason opener provided the first meaningful opportunity to evaluate how it is beginning to take shape. Several players helped themselves, including defensive backs Keyon Martin and Keondre Jackson, while Baltimore also got extended looks at several young players across the offense and defense. With that in mind, here is our latest projection of the Ravens' 53-man roster after the first week of preseason.

Randall received significant work in the preseason opener and continues to make a case for a roster spot. Elijah Tau-Toliver and Dontae McMillan also deserve attention after receiving meaningful opportunities against Philadelphia. The Ravens could ultimately keep five running backs, particularly if one of the rookies continues to separate himself. For now, Randall gets the fourth spot.

Tommy John, who won 288 games during a 26-year big league career and became the first pitcher to successfully return following groundbreaking elbow surgery that later was named after him, has died. He was 83.
He died at his home in Bradenton, Florida, on Saturday night, agent Mike Maguire said Sunday. He had been in hospice care.
On Aug. 8, the New York Yankees released a social media post in which John wrote that he wanted to say goodbye to everyone, including friends and fans who followed him throughout his career, saying, "I will never forget you."
John was a four-time All-Star with a record of 288-231 and a 3.34 ERA during a career that stretched from 1963 to 1989. He pitched for Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Yankees, the California Angels and the Oakland Athletics.
The left-hander was 31 years old when he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow in 1974, a death knell for pitchers' careers to that point.

WESTFIELD — Justin Walley remains the unknown in the Colts' trio of starting cornerbacks.
Sauce Gardner has two All-Pro nods to his name. Charvarius Ward has the accolades and played in Super Bowls.
Walley is still waiting to play his first snap in an NFL game but he's already so important to the Colts that Indianapolis held him out of Thursday night's preseason game against the Patriots, two days after the young cornerback played a heavy complement of snaps in a joint practice with New England.
When Walley got back into the lineup for Saturday's short practice at Grand Park, he showed why the Colts are so high on him. Walley broke up two passes in the end zone, making an impact in a practice that was entirely geared toward the red-zone passing game. On one, Walley went up high to deny veteran receiver Laquon Treadwell; the other came on a play where Walley covered Treadwell's initial route, then cut off the veteran receiver coming back to knock it away.
How the Colts use Walley will likely depend on the health of Ward, who suffered a back injury last week and did not travel with the team to New England. If Ward — or any of the Colts' top trio, for that matter — is forced to miss time, the next player up will likely be former Bengals cornerback Cameron Taylor-Britt, and the Colts could use Walley or Taylor-Britt in the slot. From the looks of it, Walley got some work on the outside in Saturday's practice.
