Wildfires used to 'go to sleep' at night. Climate change has them burning overtime
WASHINGTON (AP) — Burning time for North American wildfires is going into overtime. Flames are lasting later into the night and starting earlier in the morning because human-caused climate change is extending the hotter and drier conditions that feed fires, a new study found.
Fires used to die down or even die out at night as temperatures dropped and humidity increased, but that's happening less often. The number of hours in North America when the weather is favorable for wildfires is 36% higher than 50 year

Several US-based Bitcoin (BTC) mining pools have curtailed operations in response to extreme winter weather that strained electricity grids across the country.
The reductions came as an Arctic cold snap brought subfreezing temperatures across large parts of the United States.

Forecasters warn of 'dangerous travel and infrastructure impacts' for days
A massive winter storm dumped sleet, freezing rain and snow across much of the U.S. on Sunday, bringing subzero temperatures and halting air and road traffic. Tree branches and power lines snapped under the weight of ice, and hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in the Southeast were left without electricity.
The ice and snowfall were expected to continue into Monday followed by very low temperatures which could cause “dangerous travel and infrastructure impacts” for days, the National Weather Service said.

'Icequakes' possible across Midwest. What is the loud phenomenon?
Locals across the Midwest, particularly in Greater Chicago, may hear a sudden "boom" over the weekend – the result of what meteorologists call a frost quake, a weather phenomenon that takes place when temperatures plummet and groundwater freezes quickly.
More than 210 million people in the United States are under cold weather advisories, as a major winter storm is forecast to spread heavy snow, sleet and dangerous ice across at least two dozen states starting on Friday, Jan. 23, and continuing into the weekend.

Peak District tree saplings killed by drought
This year's extreme weather has caused two in every five newly-planted tree saplings at sites in the Peak District to "fail", the National Trust has said.
The East Midlands experienced almost five months of drought after England's driest start to the year since 1976 and the hottest summer on record.
The conservation charity said it was aiming to plant more than a million trees in the Peak District over the next decade and usually factors in losing about 10-15% per year.

Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, have watched our planet's seasons from **** e and discovered that spring, summer, winter, and fall are surprisingly out of sync.
Just because two places exist in the same hemisphere, at similar altitudes, or at the same latitude doesn't guarantee they'll experience the same seasonal changes at the same time.
Even regions that are side by side can experience different weather and ecological patterns, sculpting wildly different neighboring habitats.

Minnesota’s largest city was briefly colder than Mars last month.
A late-November cold snap in Minneapolis sent temperatures tumbling 10 degrees below the historical average, AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Lada explained.
High temperatures were in the mid-to-upper 20s, marking the coldest stretch for the city’s nearly 430,000 residents since February.
But on the Red Planet, some 225 million miles away, NASA’s Curiosity rover measured daytime highs of around 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, conditions changed dramatically after sunset.
