Florida football is 2-0 for the first time in five years, and Vernell Brown III is a big reason why.
The sophomore wide receiver leads the Gators in receptions (9), receiving yards (160) and touchdowns (2).
Monday, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) honored Brown for his historic performance in UF's 52-3 win over Campbell.
Brown was named the conference's co-Special Teams Player of the Week, sharing the award with South Carolina's Vicari Swain.
The Gator legacy returned back-to-back punts for touchdowns in the second quarter vs. the Camels for 64 and 70 yards. This made him the first UF player since Jacquez Green vs. Kentucky in 1996 to have two punt return TDs.

25-year-old Guardians LHP Parker Messick made his MLB debut last August, and so far the results have been pretty spectacular. Even if they're helped a little by a lucky batting average on **** in play (he's at .264 for the season, the MLB average is .289). That's not a crazy outlier though, I don't think. Messick relies heavily on a 94-ish fastball and slightly slower sinker; that combo has been dynamite for him this season. He'll frequently mix in a change, less frequently some breaking stuff.
75 years ago, Bill Veeck pulled one of his signature wacky baseball stunts. He signed 3'7" Eddie Gaedel to the Browns' roster and had him pinch-hit in a game. Gaedel drew a walk — obviously his strike zone was small — and Veeck replaced him with a pinch-runner. The pinch-runner didn't score
Now, Veeck owned the St. Louis Browns at that time, not the team in Cleveland. (So this is kinda the wrong week for this post. I thought this happened in Cleveland, until I started writing it.)
But Veeck had owned the Indians for four years, selling them in 1950 when he needed money for a divorce settlement. And had done some notable things with the team, like signing the first Negro League player to join the American League, Larry Doby. (When manager Lou Boudreau introduced Doby to the team, three players refused to shake his hand — and Veeck got rid of all three.) In 1949, Veeck signed Satchel Paige, the oldest rookie to ever play in MLB at the age of 41; he'd pitch 155.2 innings over two seasons for the team (and then became a two-time All-Star with the Browns).
Veeck claimed the idea of using a small person as a pinch-hitter was his own notion… however, there'd been a 1941 story in The Saturday Evening Post called "You Could Look it Up" by James Thurber, author of "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." The high school football season in Texas is in full swing now and the first few weeks of the season have produced instant-classics and massive matchups. Football fans in the state won't have to wait until Friday for the biggest game of the week as a Super 15 showdown kicks off Thursday night in Denton.
Waxahachie, the No. 15 team in the Super 25 rankings and No. 2 team in the Southwest Super 15 rankings, travels to Guyer, the No. 7 team in the Southwest, for just the second meeting ever between the teams.
Guyer won the only other meeting between the schools in 2010 in blowout fashion, 49-7.

Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo left their matchup with the Houston Astros early on Sunday afternoon after he was struck in the helmet by a line drive.
Perdomo went down in the third inning of the contest at Daikin Park, shortly after he opened the frame with a single. Ketel Marte followed that up with a 93 mph single of his own, but the ball ended up drilling Perdomo directly in the helmet as he tried to run to second.
Perdomo fell back to the dirt and remained there for several minutes, clearly in a lot of pain, before he eventually left the field walking on his own. He did not return.
The Diamondbacks ruled Perdomo out with a head contusion. Further specifics of his injury are not yet known.
Perdomo entered Sunday's contest with a .250 batting average with 48 RBI and nine home runs this season, his sixth in the league. The Diamondbacks hold a 75-68 record and sit in second in the NL West race, just half of a game ahead of the San Diego Padres for the final wild-card spot.

Iowa football got its 2026 season off to a roaring start, racing past Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon in 40-0 shutout fashion from Kinnick Stadium.
Fourth-year quarterback Hank Brown got the start and the Nashville, Tenn., product did not disappoint. Brown was sharp as he directed touchdown drives on each of the Hawkeyes' first three possessions.
Brown finished 12 of 20 passing for 129 yards with a touchdown pass. The 6-foot-4, 218-pound signal-caller made Kirk Ferentz and Tim Lester's decision to tab him as the season-opening starter look like a great one. Transfer receiver Tony Diaz impressed and veteran back Kamari Moulton ran wild.
Iowa's defense was just magnificent as NIU could do nothing offensively all day long. The Hawkeyes also came up with a pair of turnovers.
Deshaun Lee picked off a pass and Ty Hudkins recovered a fumble.

The North Carolina Tar Heels will enjoy a week off after their impressive Week 0 win over TCU in Ireland last weekend. With the bye week due to the travel, UNC has an extra week off as they get ready to host East Tennessee State on September 12th.
It's a game that UNC will be a heavy favorite in as they look to start the year 2-0.
While we are still about 10 days from that game, North Carolina's Director of Athletic Grounds & Turf Management revealed that it could be a throwback game for the program. Ryan Anderson took to X to show off North Carolina's new midfield logo, which is a throwback to the 80's era:

It's finally a game week for the defending ACC champion Duke Blue Devils, who open their season against the reigning American Conference champions, Tulane. After seven months of offseason tweaks and offensive retooling, here's how each offensive coordinator arrived at this moment and what to expect from each attack in Week 1.
Jonathan Brewer, Duke
Brewer came over with head coach Manny Diaz in December of 2023 and previously served under him as a senior offensive quality control coach from 2020-2021 at Miami. Last year under Brewer was historic for the Blue Devil offense as the unit set the program record for touchdowns scored (63), points scored (484), and pass efficiency (152.53). The group was the first in school history to have a 3,000-yard passer, 1,000-yard receiver, and 1,000-yard rusher.
The obvious hurdle Brewer and this offense will have to overcome is the churn at quarterback. Darian Mensah was one of the best QB's in all of college football a season ago, which was a massive part of Duke's success offensively.
This season, the Blue Devils will trot out San Jose State transfer Walker Eget, who has some huge shoes to fill but has a great deal of experience as a Division I starter. Brewer has been known to do great work with QB's throughout his career, so it's certainly possible that Eget will come out firing on all cylinders versus Tulane.

Alexander Zverev captured his first Grand Slam ***** le at the French Open this year, and now the US Open top seed is eager for another crack at the Slam that got away.
Germany's Zverev led Dominic Thiem by two sets to love in the 2020 US Open final and came away empty-handed. It would be six years before he finally hoisted a major trophy at Roland Garros.
"I still feel like I should have won in 2020, that doesn't change," Zverev said as he looked forward to his first-round clash with Italy's Lorenzo Sonego.

American Sofia Kenin beat 46-year-old compatriot Venus Williams 6-2 7-6(6) in a US Open first-round match that began at 12.13am on Monday, the latest start in women's tournament ⁠history.

Iowa football claims five national championships. The Hawkeyes claim the 1921, 1922, 1956, 1958 and 1960 national championships.
Iowa wasn't the nation's top-ranked team in the ***** ociated Press' final top 25 rankings in 1956, 1958 or 1960, though. The Hawkeyes were ranked third (1956), second (1958) and third (1960) in those seasons' final AP Top 25 polls.
And, of course, the AP Top 25 poll didn't exist until 1936.
With that in mind, ESPN compiled a list of teams that could become first-time national champions in the 2026 college football season. In order to compile its list, ESPN only recognized national ***** les from the AP, the United Press International, the Coaches Poll or BCS and College Football Playoff national championships.

HOUSTON (AP) — Jonathan Bond finished with four saves to post his sixth clean sheet in his last seven starts and help the Houston Dynamo earn a scoreless draw with the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.
Angus Gunn was never tested in earning his first clean sheet after surrendering 18 goals in his first six starts for San Jose (10-8-4).
Bond had a 485-minute scoreless streak in a run of five straight shutouts for Houston (12-7-3) come to an end his last time out in a 2-1 road loss to St. Louis City that ended a nine-match unbeaten streak.
Midfielder Eduard Löwen started in his first match with San Jose after being acquired from St. Louis City on Wednesday. Löwen has three goals and three **** ists this season.
San Jose began the day in fourth place in the Western Conference after coming off a 5-1 home loss to Minnesota United and failed to gain ground on second-place Houston.

Ever since the start of the offseason for the Cleveland Browns, which included minicamp and OTAs, head coach Todd Monken declared the quarterback competition to be a two-horse race between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders.
Watson's inclusion made sense, as the Browns signed him to a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed deal in 2022 that has been met with far subpar play and injuries, as Watson has only suited up for 19 games as a Brown. The franchise is trying to squeeze something, anything out of the former Pro-Bowler. Sanders, a fifth-round pick in 2025, started the final seven games of his rookie season, posting poor counting and advanced stats, but led Cleveland to a 3-4 record.
The two quarterbacks included in the race make sense. But the exclusion of former Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel, a third-rounder in 2025, was a bit puzzling.
Sure, he'd gone just 1-5 as the starter as a rookie and struggled to push the ball down the field, but he kept the ball out of harms way, throwing seven touchdowns to two interceptions. Considering the draft capital that the Browns had invested in Gabriel, plus only middling quarterback play in a downright bad offensive atmosphere around him, there's a case to be made that the former Duck should've had at least some chance to earn the Browns' starting job.
Yet, he wasn't given any shot, taking reps with Cleveland's third-team all summer.

Coming off a back-and-forth 2-2 draw against Villarreal, Diego Simeone's Atlético de Madrid side will travel to Sevilla this Saturday in hopes of securing their second win of the young season.
Sevilla have won both of their opening matches in La Liga: a last-second 2-1 victory against Rayo Vallecano and then a surprising 3-1 victory at Athletic Bilbao. Their intense pressing and counterattacking speed has been a key factor in their early success. Additionally, their ability to draw fouls in dangerous areas has caused havoc for their opponents. Sevilla thus far have drawn a pair of penalties and two red cards across their opening two games.
The two clubs faced each other most recently in April, when a penalty from Akor Adams (now playing at Venezia) and a thumping header from Nemanja Gudelj (now a free agent) helped the Andalusian side past Atlético, 2-1, in La Liga's first retro weekend.
Similar to the previous match day, Simeone will have to navigate player fitness concerns following the summer's World Cup, as well as the ongoing Julián Alvarez transfer soap opera.
Summer signing Cuti Romero is unlikely to start, as the coaching staff does not want to rush the defender into the starting 11 until they feel he is ready to perform. It has also been confirmed that Alvarez, who missed his third consecutive team training session in a row amid his rumored exit to ****** nal, will not play on Saturday at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. Robin Le Normand will also be unavailable, as he will be serving a one-game suspension after his red card against Villarreal.

After Andre Agassi led Team World to an upset victory over Team Europe at the 2025 Laver Cup, he gave a memorable speech during the trophy ceremony.
"I say you have mother privileges now in my life," he told his six-man team in front of the Chase Center crowd in San Francisco. "So what 'mother privileges' mean is, you call, you ask and the answer's yes before you ask. I would go to battle for each and every one of you, anywhere, anytime. Love you guys."
Agassi will again go to battle for Team World at the 2026 Laver Cup. It will be his second time serving as captain, and it is clear he immersed himself in the experience and the competition the first time around.
For Team Europe, Yannick Noah will also return as captain for his second year at the Laver Cup. The former French Open champion will head a European contingent that is favored to take the cup back at London's O2 Arena from Sept. 25-27.

After winning their league last season, the Black Country Youth County Darts team is riding high.
"It's just gone from strength to strength," team manager Andy Poole told BBC Radio WM.
Last season, the team had 28 players but has since grown to 33 for the forthcoming season, as well as increasing its number of female players from four to seven.
"One of the most difficult things in darts is getting the ladies playing, so we're very blessed to be going into this season with seven," Poole said.
As well as the overall team, the Coseley-based group, which was established in 2023, has a female-only team, as well as under-18s and under-21s teams.

Chelsea are interested in Atalanta defender Ahanor, and according to Gazzetta, the Blues have opened preliminary talks with both the Serie A club and the player's agents.

Atalanta already rejected a €34m offer from Brighton earlier this summer, and sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli reiterated in July that they are unwilling to sell any of their best and most promising players, including Ahanor.

The **** ans scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to end Sunday night's preseason game against the Seahawks with a win, but head coach Robert Saleh said the team's early performance left something to be desired in a postgame press conference.
Cam Ward started at quarterback for the second straight week and led the team to a field goal on their first drive, but failed to convert a fourth-and-1 on their second possession and fumbled on a sack to help set up a punt on his final series. Ward was 8-of-12 for 69 yards through the air before exiting the game.
All of that came against Seahawks backups and Saleh said that any of the good things that happened don't outweigh the need for the entire operation to improve.
"I thought the first drive was good, we went out there and got some points," Saleh said. "Thought Cam, again, was good with the ball, good decision-making. We just couldn't connect on a couple of deep throws, but, overall, it's got to be better. I'm not trying to sugarcoat it. It does got to be better, but at the same time, there's always going to be things that we can take from."
It's a bit better than Saleh's review of Ward's first preseason outing, but the **** ans will need the progress to pick up for the offense to get where they want it to be for Week 1 against the Jets.

Borussia Dortmund started the season with a disappointing defeat to Bayern Munich in the DFL Supercup, where the absence of depth in the fullback position was clearly visible.
That is why the club are looking to shore up their defensive unit by signing Hector Fort from Barcelona.
Fort is expected to add more depth to Dortmund's fullback department and compete with Julian Ryerson for a place in the starting eleven.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Pete Alonso hit a go-ahead two-run homer for his 30th of the season, Trevor Rogers struck out six in seven innings and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 on Friday night.
Alonso also had an RBI single in the first to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games. He's batting .480 during the stretch.
Rogers (9-8) allowed three runs and six hits in his third quality start across four starts in August. He walked one.
After Alonso put the Orioles ahead in the first, Chandler Simpson tied it in the second with an RBI single. Kenny Piper hit first career homer, a two-run 410-footer to center, to give the Rays a 3-1 lead.
Dylan Beavers launched a solo shot in the fourth to get one back. Jackson Holliday tied it with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Over the entire history of MLB, fewer than 100 pitchers have struck out 2,000 batters. Texas Rangers starter Jacob deGrom became the latest member of that elite club Thursday, hitting the milestone in the top of the first inning against the Washington Nationals.
DeGrom struck out Abimelec Ortiz in five pitches, with the last slider sending the first baseman swinging to hit the milestone. DeGrom had struck out Daylen Lile swinging one at-bat earlier.
It marks a significant accomplishment for deGrom, who has been one of the most dominant pitchers in the game since his debut in 2013 with the New York Mets.
Despite never being listed as a top-100 prospect, deGrom exceeded all expectations early. As a rookie, he posted a 2.69 ERA over 140 1/3 innings, striking out 144 opposing batters. That performance was good enough to earn deGrom the National League Rookie of the Year award.
While deGrom continued to post excellent seasons with the Mets, he really took his game up a level in 2018. That season, deGrom led the majors with an astounding 1.70 ERA over 217 innings. His strikeout rate surged, pushing deGrom to his first-ever Cy Young award. He was similarly dominant in 2019, posting a 2.43 ERA over 204 innings and leading baseball with 255 strikeouts. That performance earned him back-to-back Cy Young awards.

After a 1-1 draw in regular time — including a goal conceded at 96' after VAR intervention — Tricolor came out on top in the penalty shootout.
Lucho Acosta blasted his effort over, but the Tricolor idol saved two spot-kicks to secure a 5-4 win.

The Mets started a three game series against the Padres on Monday night. The Padres were sitting in a playoff spot, just a game ahead of the Diamondbacks for the final Wild Card spot. Walker Buehler was getting the start for the Padres, while Nolan McLean was taking the mound for the Mets, hoping to add another entry to what was shaping up to be a fantastic first full season for the rookie pitcher.
The first inning was a challenge for McLean. It looked like it might be an easy inning after Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a line out right into McLean's glove for a first out on the first pitch of the game. But back-to-back singles put two runners on with one out. Two more singles followed immediately after, but each one was hit to Carson Benge, and each resulted on an out at the plate with Benge throwing both Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado out at the plate on consecutive plays.
The Mets led off the bottom of the first with an A.J. Ewing single and a Francisco Lindor walk, putting two runners on for the Mets with no outs. Bo Bichette then hit a single to drive in Ewing as the first run of the game on his bobblehead night. Luis Robert Jr. drove in the Mets second run of the game two batters later, hitting a sacrifice fly to bring Lindor in to score.
The second was another difficult endeavor for McLean. Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases with no outs, spelling trouble for New York. Luis Rengifo hit a comebacker to McLean, who threw home for a force out to keep the Padres scoreless, but also kept the bases loaded with just one out. The Padres finally cashed in when Tatis, up for the second time in the game, hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Gavin Sheets and cut the Mets lead down to one run. Conenworth hit a single, but this time Ewing came through for McLean, throwing Xander Bogaerts out at the plate to end the inning.
McLean and Buehler traded scoreless innings for the next few frames. McLean came out of the game after six innings, having allowed just the one run. Keeping it to one run was impressive given that he gave up six hits and four walks while only striking out three, which helped illustrate the full team effort on defense alongside McLean.

Former Iceland striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson has announced his retirement at the age of 34.
Bodvarsson scored four goals in 64 international appearances for Iceland and started the Euro 2016 match in which his country upset England 2-1 to advance to the quarter-finals, a result that led to Roy Hodgson's resignation.
The striker spent almost ten years in England, first at Wolves, and then Reading and Millwall, before a successful spell at Bolton between 2022 and 2024 where he scored 25 goals in 94 appearances.
He also played for Wrexham and Burton Albion before heading home to Iceland to return to his first club Selfoss.

The Los Angeles Dodgers remain one of the favorites to win the World Series, but that doesn't mean it will come easy.
Manager Dave Roberts called out his team both offensively and defensively on Sunday, Aug. 16 after the Dodgers lost three of four games to the Milwaukee Brewers at Dodger Stadium.
"I say this because it's just been four or five, six weeks of below-average production in our offense," Roberts said. "It's just the truth, and I think we just haven't played clean baseball for quite some time, and that speaks to the defense."
When asked which was more concerning, Roberts pointed at both.
"I think both," Roberts said. "Giving extra outs, which causes pitches and the guys are working with the defense and their at-bats, but I still think there's certain intent offensively, but they both need to get better."

Jon Rahm is now expected to leave LIV, according to The Telegraph. That could be a big problem, with the league's prospective investors wanting all of the big names to commit to hanging around before they sign on the dotted line and fund the 2027 season.
The timing could hardly be better for the PGA Tour, with the tour set to be split in two from 2028.
