As you may have heard, Pete Alonso returned with his new team to Citi Field tonight, and the Mets lost to the Orioles 2-1. Although Jonah Tong pitched admirably, the Mets could not capitalize on their six hits and left nine runners on base.
After Jonah Tong struck out Dylan Beavers to lead off the first inning, Alonso stepped up to thunderous applause, cheers, and chants of his name. He flied out to Carson Benge in right field, but that did not dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd. Tong then retired Gunnar Henderson as well for a 1-2-3 start to his day. In the bottom of the inning, Francisco Lindor walked to lead off, but Juan Soto popped out, and Bo Bichette grounded into a double play for the second and third outs to end the inning.
At the top of the second inning, Jackson Holliday looped a one-out single into right field. He reached second on a passed ball by Francisco Alvarez, which had popped out of Alvarez's glove. It proved costly when Heston Kjerstad drilled a double into right field past Brett Baty. The ball made a weird hop past Baty, and Holliday scored the first run of the game. When the Mets came to bat in the second, they loaded the bases with two outs. Marcus Semien drilled a single down the left-field line, and then A.J. Ewing and Baty walked. Unfortunately, they were all stranded when Alvarez struck out on a foul tip for the third out, and the second inning ended with the score Orioles 1, Mets 0.

However, he was also stranded when Lindor struck out, leaving the score Mets 1, Orioles 1, at the end of the fourth inning.

The Bemidji State men's hockey team's top-line center was named the league's Preseason Player of the Year in the Coaches and Media Polls.
Bemidji State was picked to finish fifth in both polls. Michigan Tech was selected as the league's top team in both polls as well.
Peer, a native of Burlington, Ontario, had 20 goals and 16 ******* ists last year in his first season with the Beavers. He transferred from the University of New Brunswick (U Sports) ahead of the 2025-26 season.
Naturally, Peer was also selected to be on both of the All-CCHA Preseason Teams. It wasn't pretty, but Arizona volleyball found a way to end its five-game losing streak with a victory over Oregon State on Saturday. The Wildcats won 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 16-25, 27-25) at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
"It was necessary for us to win that match," said Arizona head coach Rita Stubbs.
It was a struggle throughout. Arizona had difficulty scoring and Oregon State had success against the Wildcats' block. While Arizona had nine blocks, it also had four blocking errors on the day. The Wildcats only had nine blocking errors in seven matches this season prior to Saturday.
Things were tight in the sets Arizona won. The Beavers took a late lead in all three before Arizona came back. The third set, which Oregon State won, was even less competitive than the 25-16 score suggested. The Wildcats persevered and Stubbs used her bench when she needed to.
Destiny Ndam-Simpson leads the Wildcats with 3.42 kills per set this season, but Saturday wasn't her day. The Beavers kept her in check, regularly taking her out of the play with their serve. She received 24 serves despite being subbed out halfway through the third set and not returning. Only Carlie Cisneros with 25 receptions in four sets was targeted more. Four of the Beavers' seven aces were charged to Ndam-Simpson.

Most college football non-conference games involving FBS teams have the home team paying the visiting team a negotiated appearance fee at some point in the months afterward. Such payouts tend to draw attention when an FCS team upsets an FBS team and receives a seven-figure payment along with it.

This one couldn't have gone much worse.
Dylan Beavers homered on the second pitch of the game.
Then, in the bottom of the first, the Jays had two on and one out, and Vladimir Guerrero was picked off first—just bad baseball. With a runner on second, he wasn't going anywhere. It looked like the Orioles put a play on: pitch low and outside to the right-handed-hitting Alejandro Kirk and catch Samuel Basallo throws straight to first. Vlad was out, and it wasn't close.
The second inning was even worse. The Orioles started the inning with four straight singles (2-0). Then a double (4-0). And another single (6-0). After that, Max Scherzer got the next 12 outs without giving up a hit. Barn doors and horse.

We are coming down to the end of this thing. The Orioles still have a remote possibility of doing something fun, a decent possibility of doing something moderately interesting, and also a decent possibility of the wheels just coming off the wagon, like you tried to ford that shallow river in Oregon Trail and all that happened is you got stuck in the muddy water so you lost who knows how many days of travel while you tried to fix things, and winter is coming and you're running out of food, and the next person who plays the game is going to find your tombstone.
Sorry, where was I? There are 15 games left in the 2026 Orioles season. They probably need to go 12-3 over those 15 games. Maybe, if they're lucky, they can get away with 11-4. Which is to say that they have fewer than one hand's fingers worth of games that they can lose for the remainder of the season. Six of those games will be played against the Blue Jays, starting with this three-game series that begins tonight.
That's part of what gives the Orioles some slim hope, because that gives them the opportunity to pull back games directly against one of the three teams that they need to pass to get into the last AL wild card spot. If they are able to go 4-2 against Toronto, they take back the two games deficit to the Jays and they get the head-to-head tiebreaker. That might not be good enough; there's still the Guardians and Rangers to consider. Maybe they need 5-1, in which case, if they lose tonight, they're really screwed and needing to run the table here.
It's improbable! It's not impossible. All they have to do is play as good as they have played for short amounts of this season, and then do that for two and a half weeks instead of doing it for three games before taking a trip back to Stinkville.

The Baltimore Orioles (70-75) and the Cleveland Guardians (73-72) continue their three-game series tonight at Camden Yards. The Orioles opened the series last night with a 6-4 win to snap a six-game losing streak and pull them to within three games in the race with Cleveland for the final Wild Card spot.
Baltimore grabbed control early. Dylan Beavers delivered an RBI double in the second inning to score Samuel Basallo, giving the Orioles a 1-0 lead. In the third, the O's advantage increased to 4-0 thanks to a Coby Mayo solo homer followed by control issues for Cleveland's hurlers as evidenced by the fact they walked in a couple runs prior to the end of the inning. Mayo added a two-run blast in the sixth, extending the Orioles' lead to 6-1. On the mound, Trevor Rogers was excellent, working 7.1 innings, allowing just one earned run, six hits, and striking out six without a walk. The Guardians made things interesting in the ninth when Nathaniel Lowe blasted a three-run homer, but Baltimore closer Jordan Walker recorded the final out to preserve the win and arguably, Baltimore's season.
Tanner Bibee (5-15, 4.06 ERA) takes the ball for the Guardians tonight. His last outing came against the Blue Jays on September 3. As he has for much of the season, Bibee struggled, lasting only four innings while allowing five earned runs on four hits. Over his last five starts, Bibee has posted a 5.08 ERA. Brandon Young (9-3, 3.42 ERA) is expected to be on the mound for the O's. Young's most recent appearance came against Boston on September 3, when he worked 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits. Over his last five outings Young owns a 3.37 ERA.

Sep. 2—EAST GRAND FORKS — Emma Pieper will enter her junior season at East Grand Forks Senior High with her college decision already made.
The 5-foot-5 Green Wave goaltender committed to Bemidji State over the weekend.
"It's like a relief off my shoulders," Pieper said. "It normally takes longer for goalies, so it was really nice to get all of that done before my junior year so there's no stress the rest of the year."
Four colleges reached out to Pieper, but the campus and coaching staff made the Beavers stand out.
"Their campus is super pretty," Pieper said. "It's on the lake, it's smaller. And their culture is really good, they're all close together. I really like how their coaching staff just meshes together, and they're always upfront with communication."

The Corry Beavers girls volleyball team enters the 2026 season with four players on the AVCA's All-American watchlist.
The Beavers have reached the last two state final four's, and will look to make another deep state run in 2026.

With the NFL preseason all wrapped up, it's time for teams to cut down their rosters to just 53. From 90, it's inevitable that players will find themselves on the outside looking in or, at the very least, on the practice squad with room to improve and be signed at any time.
Former Florida State quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei was one such player today and was waived by the Los Angeles Chargers after losing out on the backup job to former third-overall pick Trey Lance, per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports.
Uiagalelei, who had a productive college career with the Clemson Tigers and Oregon State Beavers, was an undrafted free agent in 2025. In college, he threw for 9,384 passing yards and 61 touchdowns. He was a solid rusher as well, netting another 1,124 yards and 21 touchdowns.
He appeared in three preseason NFL games this season, throwing for 341 yards and two touchdowns with a 57.1% completion percentage.
At Florida State, Uiagalelei threw for 1,065 yards and four touchdowns before a finger injury took him out of action in the fifth game of the season.

Happy Saturday, folks! Hope you're having a nice weekend. If you decide to spend it watching late-night West Coast baseball, I hope the Orioles grace you with a series win tonight. They ******* ed a win in Game One last night with a 4-3 victory in ten innings. Although Brandon Young pitched a strong seven innings, the bullpen couldn't hold onto a meager 2-0 lead, and it took extras to sort things out: two clutch base hits by Coby Mayo and Christian Encarnacion-Strand gave the birds the winning margin of victory.
Let's hope the Orioles make Game Two worth staying up for. Tonight, taking the mound at Sacramento's Sutter Health Park for the Athletics is Jack Perkins, a 26-year-old righty who debuted for the A's in 2025, and has been used mostly as a swingman. In 11 starts and 20 relief appearances in 2026, he has an ugly 6.68 ERA, although it seems he's been the victim of bad defense, to judge by his FIP (4.79) and xERA (3.96). He's still been much more effective as a reliever, going by his ERA splits (4.76 ERA in relief/8.17 ERA as a starter). His best pitch is the sweeper, which generates a 36.1% whiff rate, followed by a decent changeup and cutter. The soft spot in Perkins' ******* nal is his mid-90s four-seamer: it's been his most hittable pitch by far (.318 average, .664 slugging against, Run Value -14), and he still throws it nearly a third of the time. Perkins is also ******* e to the long ball (1.69 HR/9) and to putting runners on via the walk (3.79 BB/9) or hit-by-pitch (9 on the year).
As for the O's starter, I don't know if it's crazy or reasonable to hope for a win, given that it's unlucky Shane Baz who takes his turn on the mound tonight. Despite the fact that Baz (4.04 ERA, 3.34 FIP) has allowed three or fewer runs in 19 of his 26 starts, he doesn't have a win in his last twelve starts (which is incredible to process). And he's been pretty good! He had a 3.68 ERA in June, a 3.00 one in July, and August, while slightly worse, shows him at a 4.30 mark. Poor Baz. Can the schneid please end tonight?
Tonight's lineup features a surplus of lefties. Jackson Holliday back in the leadoff spot, and Henderson, hopefully rested after his day off, hitting third. Dylan Beavers, hot lately, is back in, and so is Cowser playing center field. The newly activated Blaze Alexander is sitting today. However, Coby Mayo, slayer of lefties, is getting a start against the right-handed Perkins anyway, hitting seventh. And Pete Alonso, lately called our team's "iron man," is still out there, hitting, even with a sore calf.
Last night saw these Orioles ******* a game back from Cleveland's lead to put them just two games back of the third and final Wild Card spot. Earlier today, the lowly Royals did the Orioles a huge favor, pummeling the Guardians 8-3, which gives the team chance to make up yet another game! Let's hope the Orioles make Game Two worth staying up for. Tonight, taking the mound at Sacramento's Sutter Health Park for the Athletics is Jack Perkins, a 26-year-old righty who debuted for the A's in 2025, and has been used mostly as a swingman. In 11 starts and 20 relief appearances in 2026, he has an ugly 6.68 ERA, although it seems he's been the victim of bad defense, to judge by his FIP (4.79) and xERA (3.96). He's still been much more effective as a reliever, going by his ERA splits (4.76 ERA in relief/8.17 ERA as a starter). His best pitch is the sweeper, which generates a 36.1% whiff rate, followed by a decent changeup and cutter. The soft spot in Perkins' ******* nal is his mid-90s four-seamer: it's been his most hittable pitch by far (.318 average, .664 slugging against, Run Value -14), and he still throws it nearly a third of the time. Perkins is also ******* e to the long ball (1.69 HR/9) and to putting runners on via the walk (3.79 BB/9) or hit-by-pitch (9 on the year).
As for the O's starter, I don't know if it's crazy or reasonable to hope for a win, given that it's unlucky Shane Baz who takes his turn on the mound tonight. Despite the fact that Baz (4.04 ERA, 3.34 FIP) has allowed three or fewer runs in 19 of his 26 starts, he doesn't have a win in his last twelve starts (which is incredible to process). And he's been pretty good! He had a 3.68 ERA in June, a 3.00 one in July, and August, while slightly worse, shows him at a 4.30 mark. Poor Baz. Can the schneid please end tonight?
Tonight's lineup features a surplus of lefties. Jackson Holliday back in the leadoff spot, and Henderson, hopefully rested after his day off, hitting third. Dylan Beavers, hot lately, is back in, and so is Cowser playing center field. The newly activated Blaze Alexander is sitting today. However, Coby Mayo, slayer of lefties, is getting a start against the right-handed Perkins anyway, hitting seventh. And Pete Alonso, lately called our team's "iron man," is still out there, hitting, even with a sore calf.
Last night saw these Orioles ******* a game back from Cleveland's lead to put them just two games back of the third and final Wild Card spot. Earlier today, the lowly Royals did the Orioles a huge favor, pummeling the Guardians 8-3, which gives the team chance to make up yet another game! For those who stayed up well into Saturday morning to watch the opener of this Orioles-Athletics series, well, I wouldn't exactly say you witnessed an instant classic. There was a whole lot of silly baseball going on. Baserunning blunders. Defensive butchery. Inexplicable managerial decisions. The Orioles couldn't score more than two runs in regulation against the league's worst pitching staff, and let a late lead slip away.
But in the end, Coby Mayo and Christian Encarnacion-Strand saved the Orioles' bacon with back-to-back RBI singles in the top of the 10th, and Alex Hoppe hung on in the bottom half for his first career save, bringing a happy ending to an often bewildering game. To quote Camden Chat commenter Knightley: "This game was so stupid, but at least we won."

You might think that the O's, after scoring 26 runs in three games in St. Louis, could at least keep up their offensive momentum against an awful Athletics pitching staff, whose 5.75 ERA entering the game was the worst in the American League. Again, you'd be wrong.
In the first nine innings against these supposedly atrocious A's pitchers, the Orioles scored two (2) runs. That's it. Both came in a weird top of the second inning against Athletics starter Jacob Lopez. The lefty's first pitch drilled Coby Mayo in the shoulder, and later he walked Leody Taveras on four pitches. With two down, Dylan Beavers — starting against a lefty for only the fifth time this year — delivered a clutch hit, roping an RBI single to right to plate Mayo with the game's first run.
Then things went haywire. Carlos Narváez tapped a 43-mph dribbler down the first base line. It should have been a simple task for Lopez to simply pick the ball up and tag out Narváez on his way to first, but somehow the A's hurler let the ball pop out of his glove, then collided with Narváez in the baseline, leading to visits from both team's trainers (both players stayed in). Taveras scored on the error, extending the O's lead to 2-0.

The Yankees (71-55) and the Orioles (61-66) conclude their three-game AL East series tonight at Camden Yards. With wins in the first two games, New York has pulled to within five games of first-place Tampa Bay in the AL East. Baltimore opened the series sitting in the final Wild Card spot but now are 1.5 games behind the Twins for a postseason berth.
Last night the Yankees won, 5-3. Along the way, they may have gotten a little help from the umpires. More on that in a moment. The Orioles struck first in unusual fashion in the bottom of the first. Jackson Holliday stole home to give Baltimore an early 1-0 lead. New York answered quickly. In the second inning, Ryan McMahon delivered an RBI single that scored Jazz Chisholm Jr., tying the game before being thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Moments later, George Lombard Jr. hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Spencer Jones to give the Yankees a 2-1 advantage. The Yankees extended the lead in the third when Ben Rice launched a 447-foot solo homer to right-center field, his 34th home run of the season. Baltimore responded immediately as Pete Alonso crushed a 423-foot homer of his own in the bottom half, trimming the deficit to 3-2. The game remained close into the sixth inning when Orioles outfielder Dylan Beavers tied the score at 3-3 with a solo homer to left-center.

An Oregon State linebacker, one of Beavers football's top defensive players, was arrested Aug. 11 on suspicion of ****** aulting two men in early April, according to court records.
Aiden Sullivan, 22, was charged with second-degree ****** ault, a felony, and two counts of fourth degree ****** ault, court records show. He pleaded not guilty to all charges Aug. 11.
Sullivan was at the Beavers' morning practice Aug. 14, an OSU Athletics spokesperson said.
Sullivan allegedly punched a man in the face April 5, which may have caused the alleged victim to fall. Sullivan allegedly injured another man but court records did not provide details.
Corvallis Police Department Officers arrested Sullivan Aug. 10 and took him to the Benton County Jail.

Aug. 10—BEMIDJI — For the fifth consecutive season, the Bemidji State women's soccer team was voted as one of the top three teams in the NSIC.
In the NSIC Preseason Coaches Poll released on Monday, the Beavers were ranked third in the conference. They've been voted top three in the conference in eight of the last nine seasons. Defending NSIC champions Minnesota State was ranked first, while Concordia-St. Paul was ranked second.
"I think what excites me most about this years teams is the togetherness that they share," head coach Jim Stone said in a release. "We had a great spring together and the group really bonded and created both an identity and a hunger. They are ready to lead and welcome our very talented freshmen in. I think the combination of our leadership, youth & talent is a great recipe and I'm excited to see how it is lived out this fall both on and off the field."
Junior Madisen Fritel was named the Beavers' preseason offensive player to watch. She appeared in all 21 matches last season, totaling seven points off three goals and an **** ist.
"Maddie lives out the values of our program as well as anyone on our roster," Stone said. "When she plays you can see how much she loves the game and her teammates. She makes an investment in every training session which pushes her teammates and has allowed her to grow and develop. She's an incredible athlete who puts a lot of pressure on defensives and allows us to play off of her."

Aug. 8—BEMIDJI — By Week 6 of the 2025 Bemidji State football season, the Beavers finally found a winning recipe at the quarterback position.
For the first four weeks, the Beavers shifted between QBs Connor Carver and Zach Romak as starters. Carver's biggest weapon is his legs, and while he would be responsible for electric plays, he became ineffective as games went on, as defenses figured out how to contain him.
The Beavers didn't fare much better with Romak, who's more of a pocket passer. Drives routinely stalled with him under center, and his completion percentage rarely rose above 50%.
That's when BSU decided to turn to redshirt freshman Bart McAninch. After rookie mistakes cost him leading a game-winning drive in his first career start against Minot State, things turned around in Week 6 against Northern State.
McAninch appeared more comfortable in the pocket, and the Beavers secured their long-awaited first win of the season at homecoming, 24-21.

WAPAKONETA — The second day of the 174th Auglaize County Fair found 4-H families at the Horse Arena for the annual Horse and Pony Show, with competitions kicking off at 9 a.m. and continuing late into the evening.
The Junior Fair showcases and competitions are organized by the Auglaize County Junior Fair Board, comprised of local youth in a 4-H club, vocational agricultural or family and consumer science group, Junior Grange, Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts units or Farm Bureau Youth Council.
Monday's exhibition was organized by Horse Chair Ollie Chisholf, 18, a member of the Buckeye Beavers 4-H Club in St. Marys.
"This is the pleasure show for the junior fair horses," he explained. "A lot of people know the horse shows for the speed and the barrels and the poles, but this is showmanship, horsemanship."
Pleasure shows evaluate a horse's disposition, gait and manners, or how "pleasureable" they are to ride. 4-H members ages 6 through 18 demonstrated their showmanship and control over their horses by guiding them through a series of intricate "patterns."

Anaheim (Calif.) Servite athlete Benjamin Harris has committed to Oregon State and broke down why he chose the Beavers.
Harris took his official visit to Corvallis back on June 19, the final big trip weekend of the month. Going in to the visit, we thought the Beavers were in a good spot and they were able to seal the deal earlier this week.
"I really connected well with the coaching staff," Harris said. "I really appreciated the honesty from the staff and how everyone treated not just me but my family when I visited.
"They have a specific plan in place for me in the offense and that was another big plus as well. They don't see me at a specific position but want to move me all around and use me a weapon as a running back and receiver and I love that fit."
Oregon State running back Lee Marks and receiver coach James Finley were the lead recruiters with Harris. Former Beaver great James Rodgers was the player the staff compared to Harris in terms of how they would like to use him.

BOSTON — There are few wins the Baltimore Orioles needed more than the one they secured in Game 2 of their doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.
A loss would’ve dropped them to five games back of Boston for the third wild-card spot in the American League. Instead, they jumped out to an early lead and let Kyle Bradish do the rest. Baltimore (50-53) cruised to a 5-1 win that ended the Red Sox’s historic 15-game winning streak and ensured it would leave Boston a manageable three games out of a playoff spot with the trade deadline 12 days away.
The Orioles, having lost 6-3 in Game 1 of the doubleheader, put up four runs on Red Sox opener Eduardo Rivera in the first inning. They reached base five times in the frame, including a two-run single by Dylan Beavers and an RBI double by Johnathan Rodríguez for his first hit as an Oriole, chasing Rivera from the game before he could record a third out.
It was all Bradish would need. The Orioles jumped on Boston’s starter Eduardo Rivera early and used that early offensive explosion to propel them to victory. After Taylor Ward barely missed a leadoff double into the right field corner, Pete Alonso started the rally with a ground rule double over the low wall in right. Gunnar Henderson then worked a four-pitch walk to bring former Red Sox Tyler O’Neill to the plate. TON hit a hard grounder to third, but Caleb Durbin’s throw to second was bobbled by Anthony Seigler, leaving everyone safe and the bases loaded.
After Christian Encarnacion-Strand struck out, Dylan Beavers stepped into the box looking to make sure the early opportunity wouldn’t go to waste. Rivera’s first-pitched slider bounced well in front of home plate, skipping past catcher Carlos Narváez and allowing Alonso to score from first.
Rivera went back to slider 2-2, but the breaking ball caught too much of the plate, and Beavers flipped it into center field for a two-run single. Johnathan Rodríguez then capped off the rally, lining a ball just over the head of Jaren Durran in left and off the Green Monster. The double scored Beavers from first, gave Baltimore a 4-0 lead and chased Rivera after just 41 pitches and two outs.

Jordan's ability to hinder the opposition's passing game jumps off the page immediately. Over the last two seasons, Jordan has broken up 14 passes, 10 of which were recorded last season with UCLA. After allowing 80% of passes to be caught as a freshman in 2023, Jordan has improved his numbers each season. Sometimes, one small play in a game ends up ruining it. When Adley Rutschman didn't challenge a pitch in the eighth inning that was called a ball, I thought that was the small ruining play. The batter went on to homer. The game was tied, and I **** umed the Orioles would soon fall behind. But that didn't happen! Instead, the stage was set for Samuel Basallo to come along and serve up some heroics. He did just that, with a home run to put the Orioles ahead and give them a 5-3 lead to start their series with the Kansas City Royals.
The Orioles started scoring early but were held to just three runs for most of the game. They got the scoring started in the second inning with a singles party. Dylan Beavers, Blaze Alexander, Jackson Holliday, and Gunnar Henderson all singled. Beavers and Alexander came in to score on hits from Holliday and Henderson. It was a nice start against Royals' starter Luinder Avila, who allowed his share of baserunners in his five innings pitched.
Taylor Ward led off the third inning with a single, but was thrown out trying to steal second base with Pete Alonso at the plate. Ward got a good job and could have beaten the throw, but appeared to try the swim move to avoid the tag. Instead, he avoided the bag just long enough to get tagged out. Not great, Taylor! Three former Oregon State Beavers baseball players have been selected to play in the 2026 MLB All-Star Game.
Travis Bazzana, Drew Rasmussen and Adley Rutschman will represent their respective teams in the contest July 14 in Philadelphia. It's the second straight year three former Beavers earned a nod as Oregon State's stamp on professional baseball continues to be among the most impactful in the country.
Bazzana, a rookie second baseman for the Cleveland Guardians, will make his first MLB All-Star appearance in his first season in the majors. The first overall pick of the 2024 MLB Draft, Bazzana made his big-league debut in April and has quickly become a staple in the Guardians' lineup and one of the most impactful second basemen in the American League.
