The Basha and Chandler high school football teams both showed why they are nationally ranked during their season-opening game on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Each time Chandler scored, it was answered by Basha with either a big play by receiver Makai Nelson or a defensive statement during the top-ranked Bears' 37-26 win before an overflow crowd at Basha High and a national TV audience on ESPN.
The game was a rematch of last year's Open Division **** le game, won by Basha. Both teams entered the game ranked among the Top 25 nationally, with Basha No. 1 in The Arizona Republic's preseason 6A rankings and Chandler No. 3.
This game was a much more competitive contest than last year's championship, which Basha won 34-7.
"They battled through adversity," Basha coach Chris McDonald said of his team. "They got punched in the mouth, and they punched back."

The Washington Commanders have begun making roster cuts, releasing four players Saturday afternoon.
The Commanders still have a long way to go to reach the league limit of 53 by Sunday afternoon. The four players released thus far on Saturday are LB Boogie Basham, LB D.J. Johnson, S Joshuah Bledsoe and S Qwuantrezz Knight.
Perhaps the Commanders have begun their defensive-side discussions, as the cuts include two linebackers and two safeties.
Qwuantrezz Knight: Knight had a working relationship with Washington GM Adam Peters. The 49ers signed the undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL Draft and spent all of the 2022 season on the practice squad. On their practice squad again in 2023, the Cardinals claimed him, and he appeared in six Cardinals games in 2023.The Cardinals released Knight following the season; Washington signed Knight to a futures contract in January of 2026. This might be the NFL end for Knight.
Joshuah Bledsoe: A 6th-round pick of the Patriots in the 2021 Draft, Bledsoe appeared in three games in 2022 and one game in 2023 for the Patriots. Since then, he has signed with the Steelers, **** ans, and Commanders but has not made a 53-man roster. This might be the end for Bledsoe, too.

JERUSALEM/ANKARA, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Israel accused Turkey of "dangerous adventures in Syria" on Thursday, while Ankara called for a halt to "reckless" Israeli attacks, two days after Israel bombed a Syrian airbase where it said Turkish troops were about to deploy.
The attack has brought into focus tensions between regional powers Turkey and Israel over Syria, an Arab state which borders both countries and where Ankara's influence as an ally of President Ahmed al-Sharaa has stirred Israeli alarm since he toppled Bashar al-Assad in 2024.
Israel said that Damascus was on the verge of allowing Turkish troops to deploy at the Abu al-Duhur airbase and had ignored Israeli warnings that such a deployment would pose a threat to Israel's security - a claim denied by Turkey.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, in comments to Axios on Wednesday, said he had made clear to Israel there were no plans to establish a Turkish military base at Abu al-Duhur.

A Syrian court has sentenced ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia, after convicting him of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during the country's civil war.
It is the first conviction against ***** ad, who fled from Damascus to Moscow with his family after his regime was overthrown in December 2024, ending his family's five-decade grip on power.
Assad's cousin and the former head of political security in southern Syria's Deraa province, Atef Najib, was also sentenced to death. He had been put on trial and appeared wearing a striped prison uniform inside a cage in the courtroom as the judge read out his sentence.
Deraa is widely seen as the birthplace of the uprising against ***** ad's rule.
In March 2011, the detention and alleged torture of a group of teenagers accused of writing anti-government graffiti sparked protests in the city, which were met with a violent crackdown by security forces.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Russian forces in Syria will give up control of two strategic bases on the Mediterranean coast, which will be used as joint Russia-Syrian training centers under a new agreement between the two countries, Syria's Foreign Ministry said Sunday.
Russia was the top political and military ally of ousted President Bashar ****** ad during the country's civil war between 2011 and 2024. ****** ad was ousted in December 2024 by Islamist insurgents led by current interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa and has since fled into exile in Russia.
Throughout the conflict, the Hmeimem air base and the Tartus naval base were key Russian military outposts in the eastern Mediterranean.
Under the new agreement between Damascus and Moscow, Syria will take control of the Hmeimem air base and the commercial berth at Tartus port as part of its civil administration. The military facilities at both sites will become "joint training" centers, the Foreign Ministry said.
The new arrangements represent a "reorganizing of the Russian presence" along Syria's coast, the ministry said.

Aug 9 (Reuters) - Syria and Russia reached a memorandum of understanding to settle the future of Russian bases at Tartous and Hmeimim following 18 months of intensive negotiations, the Syrian foreign ministry said on Sunday, according to the Syrian state news agency.
The ministry said the Syrian state would take over management of civilian facilities, including Hmeimim airport and the commercial berth at Tartous port, allowing them to be gradually integrated into the country's civilian administration.
It said military facilities would be repurposed as joint training and qualification centres under new arrangements preserving the interests of both sides, with the transition to be completed within three months.
Russia's naval facility at Tartous and Hmeimim air base have long been Moscow's principal military footholds in the Mediterranean and Middle East.
Their future has been the subject of negotiations with Syria's new leadership since former President Bashar al-Assad was ousted in December 2024.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Syria's newly elected parliament on Sunday held its first session since the ouster of former President Bashar ******* ad, hoping to restart the legislative process in the country after years of conflict and autocratic rule.

The Washington Huskies saw one of their most hotly contested offensive line targets in the 2027 class go elsewhere on Saturday afternoon when four-star offensive lineman DaJohn Yarborough announced his pledge to the California Golden Bears
The 6-foot-5, 340-pound product of Basha High School in Arizona, who is ranked as the nation's No. 426 overall prospect and No. 25 interior offensive lineman by the 247Sports Composite, picked coach Tosh Lupoi and the Golden Bears out of a final four that also included Florida State, Mississippi State, and UW.
Although his junior year was cut short due to a fractured ankle, Fisch and offensive line coach Michael Switzer kept up a strong relationship with the hulking prospect, who has the size, physicality, and skill set the pair looks for from early contributors up front. However,
"The big man slides smoothly in pass protection and balances his weight well, always finding himself on the winning end of collisions with defenders," Huskies Wire's Alex Katson wrote in an evaluation of his film. "With such prototypical size and technique, Yarborough profiles as a player who could find himself in the NFL rather quickly with the right coaching staff during his time in college."
As Washington continues to build up its offensive line for the rigors of the Big Ten, Yarborough would have been viewed as a promising building block alongside Freshman All-American John Mills, former five-star Kodi Greene, and former four-star Champ Taulealea, who should make up the core of Switzer's unit in 2027.

As the Washington Huskies look to fill out their 2027 offensive line class, the only uncommitted prospect left on the board has been one of Jedd Fisch and position coach Michael Switzer's top priorities throughout the cycle, four-star DaJohn Yarborough.
The 6-foot-5, 340-pound product of Basha High School in Arizona is set to decide between a final four of California, Florida State, Mississippi State, and Washington, following official visits to the programs in May and June. The Huskies got the final chance to make an impression on him over the June 19 weekend, and now, with his July 11 commitment date looming, there's little clarity in which way he may be leaning.
However, as the Huskies continue their push to land his pledge and round out their offensive line class, that visit could loom large for several reasons.
First, Fisch and Switzer brought all of their top offensive line targets to campus at the same time in hopes of creating chemistry between the group, as Yarborough was flanked by center pledge Reis Russell, along with four-star Gecova Doyal and three-star Tye Kennedy, both of whom committed to the Huskies on July 1.
Second, now that Doyal and Kennedy have announced their commitments, the hulking prospect is the piece that could be a big complement to both the depth and talent Switzer is looking to build up front.

Farid Basharat is ranked among the top bantamweights in the sport with a perfect 15-0 record including six wins in the octagon but he’s still risking everything going into his next fight at UFC 329 in July.
Despite a flawless resume, the 28-year-old fighter is about to compete on the final fight of his current UFC contract and he knows there’s a world where the promotion just opts not to sign him to a new deal. Obviously, Basharat hopes otherwise and he’s just adding that onto the list of reasons he wants to win and then move onto higher ranked competition.
“This is going to be the last fight on my contract so I’m hoping it does reward me,” Basharat told MMA Fighting. “I’m hoping I go out there and have a good performance and then as it stands because [Sean] O’Malley beat [Aiemann] Zahabi, I do have the longest win streak in the bantamweight division.
“So I’m hoping go out there, beat this guy and get rewarded with a new contract. Hopefully the next opponent is going to be a step up. That’s the plan.”
Fighting out a contract gives the UFC the option to offer a new deal or just cut ties with the athletes so nothing whatsoever is guaranteed for the future.

The bond between Washington Huskies head coach Jedd Fisch and quarterback Demond Williams Jr. goes far beyond when they first arrived on Montlake.
As a four-star recruit out of Basha High School in Arizona, Williams had originally committed to Ole Miss in December 2022. However, during his time with the Arizona Wildcats, Fisch was able to convince the coveted prospect to stay closer to home, and in July 2023, Williams backed off his pledge to coach Lane Kiffin and the Rebels before committing to the Wildcats.
In an interview with the Big Ten Network's Yogi Roth, Williams went in depth on that bond with Fisch that eventually led him to follow the head coach to Seattle after he was hired in January 2024 and eventually to stay with the Huskies after his brief flirtation with the transfer portal.
"I think our relationship is so strong now going into this season," Williams said. "Year three for him as the play caller, year three for me as a quarterback, so I think the sky's the limit as far as what we can do this year, and I think that this offseason, it's really up to us to get on the same page."
As Fisch continues to emphasize Williams' play in big games, with a trio of ranked teams on the schedule in Indiana, Oregon, and Penn State, being on the same page is critical, especially as the Huskies look for new playmakers to step up after running back Jonah Coleman and wide receiver Denzel Boston departed for the NFL draft.

ABDIN, Syria (AP) — As Israeli troops and vehicles entered the town of Abdin in southern Syria, residents blocked the roads with rocks, and some young men and boys threw stones to push back the military patrol.
Tensions in this part of the country created by a buffer zone occupied by Israeli forces have flared into violence in recent days, leaving residents anxious that more escalation is coming. Residents of Abdin, located near a U.N.-patrolled buffer zone now controlled by Israeli troops, tried to resist against a military incursion Sunday.
Residents said Israeli troops fired warnings shots at walls and between the angry protesters, before firing artillery rounds at the village. No one was harmed in the exchange, but most residents fled, and most were still too afraid to return on Monday. Many fear that there will now be more intense incursions and raids following the skirmish.
"They come into the village regularly, every few days," said resident Mohammad al-Hassan, standing not far from a group of children looking at an exploded shell. "They come in armored 4x4 vehicles, they roam around the village and search some houses, they knock on doors and if people don't answer the door they break it down and enter the houses. Women and children start screaming, it's a terrifying thing, them coming here."

Israeli officials initially described the move as temporary to protect their borders from militant groups, but more recently top Israeli officials have said they plan to occupy the buffer zone in Syria indefinitely.

The Penguins completed drafted the twin brother of first round pick Liam Ruck by selecting Markus Ruck with the 39th pick of the 2026 NHL draft.
M. Ruck is a left handed forward that is more of a playmaker compared to his brother's penchant for goal scoring. Markus led the WHL in scoring.
Some reports on the newest Penguin prospect.

Markus Ruck led the CHL in points (108) and ****** ists (87), but comparisons and compatibility with his brother, who tends to be the more highly rated prospect, have also been talking points regarding his status and projection as a prospect. Together, they've been on a tear over the last few months and are now in the midst of a second deep playoff run with the Tigers, with Markus functioning as the setup man for his twin brother and a rotation of high-end 2027-eligible linemates like Noah Davidson and Shaeffer Gordon-Carroll as well as signed Flames prospect Andrew Basha. He also played well at the WHL Prospects Game, where he registered two ****** ists. I think he and Liam are actually quite close as prospects, though some have a big of a larger gap. (I have spoken with people who are partial to Markus as well, even if that's a minority.)

Photos of Shiite Muslims displaced from Syria living at a newly opened camp in Lebanon
