DETROIT, July 30 (Reuters) - Ford CEO Jim Farley told employees in a town hall on Thursday that the company is preparing for the possibility that Chinese automakers could enter the American market in the next five to 10 years, even though the country has erected numerous trade barriers to cars from China, according to three people who viewed the meeting.
Farley has been among the most vocal about how competitive Chinese auto giants like BYD are in the industry. Ford is preparing to roll out a family of affordable electric vehicles that it engineered from the ground up to match the cost and efficiency of the Chinese companies.
The Ford chief, along with other senior leaders, said in a question-and-answer portion of the town hall that it is more likely Chinese companies would enter the market at the latter end of that range. The comments come as the U.S. Senate is pushing to expand a ban on Chinese car sales in the world's second-largest and most lucrative auto market.
A Ford spokesperson declined to comment on discussions that took place during a private meeting with employees.

Reddit, Inc. (NYSE:RDDT) may be willing to walk away from roughly $60 million a year to stop Google from turning its discussions into answers that users never leave Google to read. The companies are negotiating a renewal of their 2024 data-licensing agreement, and Reddit has discussed ending Google's access to its content for AI use, the Wall Street Journal reported on July 22. Reddit, Inc. (NYSE:RDDT) fell 8.7% after the report, its worst session since March, according to Barron's.
Google can find generic product descriptions and technical explanations all over the web. Reddit is useful because its users argue about whether a product is actually good, describe unusual problems and update old advice. Those conversations answer queries for which polished corporate pages are nearly useless. Reddit can reasonably demand more money or limits on how that material appears in Google's AI products.

Walking away would carry a cost beyond the licensing check. Alphabet Inc. Blackstone Inc. (NYSE:BX) just posted one of its stronger quarters in years. Profit available to shareholders jumped 26% to $1.52 a share, beating estimates that were clustered around $1.33 to $1.35. Total ******* ets under management grew 11% to $1.35 trillion, and revenue jumped 36% to $5.04 billion. Nine of the firm's ten best-performing investments right now are tied to artificial intelligence. Yet Blackstone's stock is down about 20% so far this year as of July 23, roughly in line with its peers.
Part of the answer is that not every number was strong. Base management fees, one of the metrics ******* ysts watch most closely, came in lighter than expected. The private credit business, which lends money to companies rather than owning them outright, had its second straight quarter of falling profit, down 6% to $373 million. That business also saw its flagship retail fund pull in just $1 billion from wealthy individual investors this quarter, down sharply from $1.9 billion last quarter and $3.7 billion a year ago, as some retail investors grew nervous about private credit generally and pulled money out. President Jon Gray of Blackstone said withdrawal requests have "slowed materially" so far in the current quarter, which is a positive sign, but the pullback itself was real.
This makes you wonder: Is Blackstone Inc. (NYSE: BX)'s AI-driven growth fast enough to keep the whole firm doing well even when other parts are struggling, or is the market right to be cautious?
Blackstone's AI bet goes back to 2021, when it took data center operator QTS private for $10 billion. This quarter, it struck new deals tied to Google's AI chips, Broadcom chip financing, and Anthropic compute, and sold a data center portfolio for $8 billion and a battery storage company for $7 billion. Infrastructure financing is a real fee engine now too, a record $321 million in transaction fees this quarter, nearly double last year. Gray argues Blackstone Inc. (NYSE:BX) deserves a higher valuation than it gets: almost no debt, a dividend yield near 4%, and tech-like growth at a discount to tech multiples. Data center leasing has scaled from 1 gigawatt in 2024 to 2 in 2025 to a pace of at least 7 this year, built on signed contracts with creditworthy clients rather than speculative building. The firm is also expanding abroad, joining a $16 billion Kuwait pipeline deal and planning a new Dubai office.

That message on Lipe vs. Lupus Superior ultimately became likely the most-discussed topic of the phone call, though Michael Castagnetto, the president of North American Surface Transportation, was able to make his core point at least twice about the company's core brokerage operations: it has now been 13 quarters where volume growth at C.H. Robinson outstripped the benchmark volume numbers published by Cass Information Systems.

At the end of a tumultuous tenure, most rational Ohio State fans can agree that The Team Up North finally did something right when it hired Kyle Whittingham. The new head football coach is as classy as they come, and in the twilight of his career, he'll stabilize a program that has been riddled with controversy for the past several years. Buckeye Nation may dislike the guy because of the colors he'll wear on Saturday afternoons, but it would be a stretch to hate the man.
The new head coach at Michigan comes from a different era. One where you let your play on the field do the talking. An era where you played as hard as you could, and at the end of the game, you shake your opponent's hand after a hard-fought competition. No flag planting. No shoulder checks in the tunnel. No standing at midfield hoping for a brawl. Just respect for the game. And that's exactly what Whittingham brings to this next edition of the rivalry.
When asked about the hatred that has boiled over in recent years, Whittingham didn't hold back. It was a response that some fans on the fringe will scoff at, but a refreshing response for those of us who love the game and love this rivalry.

Karl Ravech is an ESPN legend with decades at the Worldwide Leader while doing SportsCenter, Baseball Tonight and play-by-play on the air for baseball. But earlier this month, he was among those laid off by the company.
Yet there he was on Thursday night, calling a game on the network between the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves. What's up with that? USA TODAY Sports has an answer.
"Despite Ravech being part of the latest round of layoffs at ESPN, a person with knowledge of his status with the network told USA TODAY Sports Thursday evening that Ravech was given the option to call a few select MLB games this summer," wrote John Leuzzi and Kristie Ackert.

He reserved some of his highest praise for Ohio State.
"They're a goliath," Cignetti said. "There's some goliaths in the Big Ten that have been goliaths for a long time."
Cignetti later expanded on his answer to include the likes of Michigan, USC and Penn State in that same category, while opening the door for a natural follow-up question: Is Indiana on the verge of joining those ranks?
"We were the national champs of 2025 and 27-2 the last two years," Cignetti said. "Longest home win streak in college football. Longest win streak in college football. I don't know. You guys write those stories."

DETROIT, July 30 (Reuters) - Ford CEO Jim Farley told employees in a town hall on Thursday that the company is preparing for the possibility that Chinese automakers could enter the American market in the next five to 10 years, even though the country has erected numerous trade barriers to cars from China, according to three people who viewed the meeting.
Farley has been among the most vocal about how competitive Chinese auto giants like BYD are in the industry. Ford is preparing to roll out a family of affordable electric vehicles that it engineered from the ground up to match the cost and efficiency of the Chinese companies.
The Ford chief, along with other senior leaders, said in a question-and-answer portion of the town hall that it is more likely Chinese companies would enter the market at the latter end of that range. The comments come as the U.S. Senate is pushing to expand a ban on Chinese car sales in the world's second-largest and most lucrative auto market.
A Ford spokesperson declined to comment on discussions that took place during a private meeting with employees.

Jul. 30—When 90+ Project Director of Programming and Coach Aaron Lewis asked the players at Thrive International's youth summer soccer camp how many of them weren't born in the United States, dozens of hands shot up.
Sitting in the grass at Franklin Park, those same players watched as four out of the five Spokane Velocity players who were visiting camp Thursday raised their hands, too.
"You're my GOAT," 9-year-old Mel Akon later told Velocity left-backer Moses Mensah while the kids collected autographs on soccer ****** , cleats and posters. "One day I'm gonna look like you and be like you."
"I want to see that," Mensah, originally from Ghana, answered without hesitation.
The annual youth soccer camp is run through a partnership with refugee resettlement organization Thrive International and sports-based youth development organization 90+ Project. A Dallas County jury last week hit freight broker C.H. Robinson with a share of a $604 million verdict in Peyton Lipe et al. v. Lupus Superior, LLC et al. The case stems from a deadly 2021 crash on Interstate 20 in Mississippi. A tractor-trailer operated by Lupus Superior and driven by Gorgonio Gonzalez plowed into stopped traffic. The wreck sparked a multi-vehicle fire that killed Jennifer Lipe, Benjamin Brewer, and Rhoderick Coleman. Two others were seriously hurt. Gonzalez also died.
The jury found the driver, the motor carrier, and C.H. Robinson all negligent. The jury ******* igned Gonzalez with 45% responsibility, Lupus Superior with 32% responsibility, and C.H. San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was originally reported to have not been at fault in his car crash earlier this month, but quickly told reporters he had caused the crash because he was reaching for his dropped cell phone.
That left an awkward question: If Shanahan was indeed at fault for the crash, why wasn't he cited by police in the aftermath of the crash?
A report from ESPN provided the answer on Thursday, with Palo Alto Police saying via statement that the citation decision came down to officer discretion and denying it was due to any sort of favoritism for the local NFL teams' head coach. They also said the other driver initially being labeled at fault in their database was due to an error.

In a statement to ESPN, a police spokesperson said the attribution of fault to the other driver was the result of "a clerical error." And the responding officer exercised his discretion when determining whether to cite Shanahan.

Sky Sports's new documentary is stacked with sobering soundbites. In one scene, boxing coach Joe Gallagher recalls hearing a mother ask her son: "Are all the lows worth that one high?" The answer, of course, was "yes". As Gallagher puts it: "Everyone wants their own Rocky story."
But as Sky explores, that doesn't always mean a rousing underdog story. Rocky's sequels showed Sylvester Stallone's character struggling with retirement, and this is the premise of The Final Round.
Releasing on Friday, the film features interviews with former world champions like Johnny Nelson and Josh Warrington, while Gallagher and Dominic Ingle are among the coaches to speak, promoter Eddie Hearn features, and commentator Andy Clarke weaves together themes of "addiction", sacrifice, and ego.

The Washington Commanders are underway at training camp! That, of course, means the season is right around the corner, and we'll soon have answers to our biggest questions.
One of the questions is how the running back rotation will work out. Jacory Croskey-Merritt had a respectable rookie season, but the team added Rachaad White, Kaytron Allen, and Jerome Ford this offseason. Any of that trio could push for a large role, meaning Croskey-Merritt has his work cut out for him.
The second-year running back is coming to camp prepared, though. During the first day of camp on Wednesday, Croskey-Merritt showed up noticeably more built. The running back reportedly put on eight pounds of muscle over the offseason due to wanting to break more tackles.
"I just want to be stronger, be able to break more tackles," Croskey-Merritt said. "I just want to be able to do more stuff, and I think it's going to pay off, man."
The running back played in all 17 games as a rookie and ended with 805 yards and eight touchdowns. Croskey-Merritt had a mediocre stretch over the middle of the season, though, and he struggled to break through contact. The hope is that the experience and added weight will help in that area in 2026.

Happy Thursday, everyone. Senators are still working on the Protect College Sports Act. The SEC and Big Ten continue to push for higher caps, which would make it even more difficult for schools in other leagues to compete.
A pair of documents outlining concessions the lawmakers have made in the negotiations were headlined by a $20 million-plus "retention pool" that schools could use to keep players from leaving. It would amount to a doubling of the revenue-sharing "salary cap," which is currently set at $21.3 million for this school year.
The conferences are seeking answers on whether the increase in revenue share would impact rules governing third-party payments to players, the likes of which are largely blamed for spiraling roster costs.
There's also the question of whether such an increase would comport with the House settlement — the $2.8 billion lawsuit settlement that dictates rules around revenue sharing. Jeffrey Kessler, the plaintiffs' attorney, has said he would need to see the language before weighing in on whether it impacts the settlement.
Absent from the documents was any mention of rewrites regarding antitrust protection or preemption of state laws. Those have been core requests surrounding legislation from virtually all the conferences and NCAA since Congress began this process.
