The No. 5 Hoosiers ended up winning 55-0 after the teams mutually agreed to shorten the game with a 10-minute fourth quarter. This was the third shutout win of Cignetti's tenure.

I ****** umed Miami -59.5 would stop scoring at some reasonable point against Florida A&M on Thursday night. The Hurricanes won 77-7. Indiana beat Indiana State 73-0 last season.

In the first year under Curt Cignetti, it beat Western Illinois 77-3. I'll take the chance that 56.5 might be laughably low against another FCS team if history repeats itself.

The No. 5 Hoosiers lost three starters in the first quarter of a 52-16 win over North Texas, a situation Cignetti has never experienced.
"I've never played, I don't think, a football game where we lost three starters in the first quarter," Cignetti said Thursday night on his weekly radio show. "Let alone the opening game of the year."

Indiana played much of the game with starting corners Jamari Sharpe and A.J. Harris sidelined and were short-handed at running back thanks to a fluke injury to Khobie Martin. Earlier this week, Cignetti labeled IU's corners as "day-to-day" and told reporters Martin would likely be out until midseason.

James Madison made history in 2025, becoming the first-ever Sun Belt team to qualify for the College Football Playoff. But success came with a cost in the offseason. Head coach Bob Chesney left for UCLA, as did some of the Dukes' top players including running back Wayne Knight and defensive end Sahir West. Starting quarterback Alonza Barnett III wound up at UCF.
James Madison lost a bulk of the coaching staff and all but three primary starters from its CFP team. But the program is accustomed to handling adversity of this nature, not missing a beat when Curt Cignetti handed the reins to Bob Chesney two years ago.
Signs of a similar baton pass were evident Saturday when JMU defeated Liberty, 20-13, in head coach Billy Napier's debut.
James Madison fielded the nation's fifth-ranked total defense in 2025, and that was the team's calling card in the 2026 opener. Liberty was held completely out of the end zone until 10 minutes remained in the contest, thanks to the Dukes' ability to stonewall the run game.
Liberty's spread option attack ranked top-4 nationally in rushing in two of three seasons under head coach Jamey Chadwell. But through 38 attempts against JMU, the Dukes produced just 91 rushing yards, calculating to 2.4 per carry. They never broke off a big one, with the longest run of the day measuring to 10 yards.

The North Texas Mean Green were ransacked by the transfer portal harder than almost any other college football program. After losing head coach Eric Morris to Oklahoma State, North Texas lost nearly the entirety of its production from a 12-2 team, including the nation's leading passer Drew Mestemaker and rushing touchdowns leader Caleb Hawkins.
Head coach Neal Brown, formerly of Troy and West Virginia, was tasked with reassembling a roster in Denton, TX. North Texas was one of two FBS teams returning zero starters, and instead, it brought 70 newcomers in attempt to recapture the magic of 2025.
However, the newcomer laden roster faced the ultimate test out of the gate. North Texas' first challenge was a road matchup at Indiana, immediately after the Hoosiers their 2025 National Championship banner. Indiana hadn't lost a game since 2024, and the Hoosiers' FBS-best 16-game win streak extended to 17 against the Mean Green. The reigning champions left no question in a 52-16 domination in Bloomington, IN.
Indiana made efficient work of North Texas, scoring seven touchdowns and notching one field goal on nine total possessions. TCU transfer quarterback Josh Hoover, called upon to replace Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, collected more touchdowns (4) than incompletions (3) in a 13-of-16, 231-yard passing performance. Wide receiver Charlie Becker recorded a team-high 64 receiving yards and two touchowns in the Hoosiers' third-straight season opener win under Curt Cignetti.
North Texas also debuted a transfer quarterback, bringing UCF transfer Tayven Jackson to campus this offseason. But before spending 2025 as UCF's primary starter, Jackson played two seasons at Indiana and logged six starts. Saturday marked a homecoming for the Greenwood, IN native, who registered 192 passing yards on a 22-of-28 showing. Jackson briefly exited the game with a lower-body injury, causing East Carolina transfer Chaston Ditta to take over, but he ultimately returned and finished the day for the Mean Green.

He looked the picture of Hoosier grit as Indiana's new starter Saturday.
He threw four touchdown passes, had only three incompletions, finished with no turnovers and delivered an indelible image during Saturday's 52-16 victory over North Texas that is a lock to make this season's highlights — his bloodied face and chin strap, after an opponent yanked hard on his facemask.
Hoover never flinched.
"It feels good, I just got a little cut there," he said, referring to his injured nose. "It looked way worse than it felt. I didn't even know it was bleeding like that, so, yeah, I feel good. I think it did me a favor, though. It looked worse than it was, so they were like 'Hey, this guy's tough,' but it didn't really do anything."

Jayden Maiava of USC, Dante Moore of Oregon, and Julian Sayin of Ohio State all played a full Big Ten football season in 2025. Josh Hoover of Indiana did not. He was with TCU last year. This instantly makes Hoover one of the most compelling and consequential figures in the Big Ten in 2026.
Those of us who follow West Coast football knew that Fernando Mendoza was a good player at California. With Curt Cignetti's coaching and Indiana's overall talent, Mendoza was placed in a position to succeed. He had in Indiana what he lacked in Berkeley as a Golden Bear.
The thought process for Cignetti and Indiana with Josh Hoover is similar to what we saw with Mendoza. Take a talented player away from TCU - a medicore team and a struggling program - and put him in Bloomington with other well-coached Hoosiers. The hope for Indiana is that Hoover takes off much as Mendoza did.
Purely as an athlete, Josh Hoover can compare with Fernando Mendoza. He can run. He can throw. He can make plays. However, Mendoza was special - elite and even legendary - as a crunch-time performer. Mendoza got bigger, not smaller, in late-game pressure situations. He shrugged off huge mistakes in multiple games. He could play poorly for a quarter or two but then regroup and deliver when his team needed it. The mental toughness of Fernando Mendoza, shown on his iconic touchdown run to win the national championship against Miami, is what we can't ***** ign to Josh Hoover right now. Hoover needs to show he has the inner steel Mendoza displayed. Until then, it's all speculation.
Josh Hoover has not earned the benefit of the doubt. Curt Cignetti, however, has. It's a question of whether the coach can lift the quarterback or if the QB drags down the best coach in college football. The way this situation breaks in Indiana will have a profound domino effect on the Big Ten, and very possibly USC, in 2026.

So the most anticipated sports season in Bloomington is about to begin — football.
I am still amazed that not only is that a sentence that got typed, it is a true sentence as well. The Indiana Hoosiers are the NCAA national champions and that can not be taken away from them. It wasn't an anomaly, it wasn't a fluke and they have to be respected for it.
I am not an IU fan (my Boiler fandom now follows me like the black cloud that followed Pigpen from Peanuts) — and all the skullduggery leads to the very same place – IU just completed the greatest season in college football history.
The rest of college sports now has to live with IU football at the top of the heap and the rest of us who call West Lafayette our safe ****** e now have to endure the fact that the last two undefeated National Champions in football and basketball reside about 300 yards from each other on Fee Lane.
Last year was a Disney movie whose script wrote itself except that would be trite and barely contain a narrative of the heroics of that statue. With heroes straight out of Homer, and a quest even more farfetched, Fernando Mendoza and Curt Cignetti became a modern Ulyesses and Achilles, and even Ohio State and Miami couldn't provide a suitable villain.

The contract comes with a pay raise and comes on the heels of Indiana's initial and extended contracts with Curt Cignetti as the Hoosiers' head football coach. Cignetti, hired by Dolson in 2023, is 27-2 through two seasons in Bloomington with a Big Ten Championship, a pair of College Football Playoff appearances and a national championship in 2025.
Dolson is in his seventh season as Indiana's athletic director in 2026, having taken over for the retired Fred Glass following a lengthy career as the Hoosiers' deputy athletic director and chief operating officer. He's led the department through the COVID-19 pandemic, the advent of the transfer portal and NIL and revenue sharing, among other major events that have shaped college sports the past several years.
His accomplishments include the hiring of Cignetti, continued support for the football program, a school record 119 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars in 2025-26, five consecutive Big Ten Championships for men's swimming and diving, a record four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for softball and more.

"Yeah, I'd like to play Notre Dame," Cignetti said. "They oughta come to our place twice, we'll go up there once, since they're not in a conference. I'd love to play them. It'd be a great in-state game."
Indiana came under fire earlier this month when it was reported that the Hoosiers asked out of an existing home-and-home series against Notre Dame set for 2030 and 2031, a move that several members of the former fanbase approved of.

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana athletic director Scott Dolson signed an amended contract that extends his deal through 2031.
According to documents obtained by The Herald-Times, part of the USA TODAY Network, the amendment was finalized on Nov. 25, 2025, five days before the school announced a long-term extension for football coach Curt Cignetti.
Dolson, a former student manager for Bob Knight who helped transform his alma mater's fortunes on the gridiron, will make a base salary of $1.15 million a year, up $200,000 from his previous extension. He signed an additional contract amendment in June 2026 that impacted his deferred-compensation plan.
The university will now contribute $500,000 each July — up from $125,000 — through the length of the extended deal. Dolson will become fully vested in the deferred compensation account if he remains as the school's athletic director through December 2031 or is fired without cause before that date.

Indiana head football coach Curt Cignetti said he'd like the Hoosiers to play Notre Dame, but under certain conditions.
"Yeah, I'd like to play Notre Dame. They ought to come to our place twice, and we'll go up there once, since they're not in a conference," Cignetti said during an interview on Big Ten Network with Dave Revsine on Friday.
"I'd love to play them," he added. "It'd be a great in-state game."
Notre Dame might scoff at having to play twice at Indiana, where Memorial Stadium has a capacity of 53,524. Meanwhile, Notre Dame Stadium seats 77,622 spectators.
Indiana and Notre Dame were set to play each other in a home-and-home series during the 2030 and 2031 seasons. But the Hoosiers decided to back out of the agreement, The Athletic's Pete Sampson reported.

The school has followed Indiana's blueprint to building a college football program and if the results follow, or even come close, then a profitable football program will ease any and all financial concerns."
The Indiana comparison is obvious and undeniable. Indiana now prints money on football after being a total ***** ody and an absolute nothingburger in the sport for decades. If Bob Chesney even comes remotely close to the Curt Cignetti standard, UCLA will be in great shape. The real question, though, is if Chesney makes UCLA a solid and respectable program - 8-4 or 9-3 - but never makes big bowl or playoff games. Would that be enough to truly turn around the financials in Westwood? We will have to wait and see.

The UCLA Bruins brought in Bob Chesney to elevate the football program to a point where the team is competing at the highest level. A great way to move towards that is to become the best team in the city that you're in.
UCLA football certainly hasn't been better than USC since the turn of the century, and it's been even worse for the Bruins since the turn of the century. USC will be good again this year but Lincoln Riley has been even better off of the field, landing several top-of-the-line recruiting classes.
So when might Chesney and the Bruins be able to compete consistently against USC? Maybe pretty soon. Trojans Wire writer Matt Zemek voiced his belief that things can change quickly in the world of college football.
"When UCLA kicked USC up and down the field in 2023, we all saw why that happened. D'Anton Lynn's UCLA defense swarmed USC's tissue-soft offensive line and blew up the Trojans' backfield again and again. UCLA was the far more physical team that day. The Bruins were physical with USC last season and were therefore able to push the Trojans even though they had far less talent," Zemek said. "UCLA under Bob Chesney should be able to play with the physicality needed to beat USC. Given that Chesney has recruited well and shows promise as someone who can develop his players, that's all UCLA really needs to match and then exceed USC. It all goes back to Chesney being half as good for UCLA as Curt Cignetti has been for Indiana. If Chesney is even remotely close to the Cignetti standard, UCLA will run LA barring a Lincoln Riley renaissance in which his offenses start putting up 55 points a game the way he did at Oklahoma."
Cignetti may be the best coach in the sport but Chesney even earning comparisons to the reigning national champion head coach is a good sign in Westwood.

It's obvious why P.J. Fleck and Minnesota are in favor of an expanded College Football Playoff. At 24 teams, the Golden Gophers would have likely made the CFP a few times since 2021, as Fleck and the Golden Gophers have won at least eight games four times in those five seasons, while also winning all five bowl games they have played in. This isn't even taking into account the 2019 season when Minnesota won 11 games and finished the season ranked 10th in the country.

UCLA football head coach Bob Chesney was put in rarified air on Saturday during the start of UCLA's training camp, getting compared to legendary Indiana coach Curt Cignetti.
UCLA and Indiana are both in the Big Ten, but they are in two vastly different arcs in their programs.
Indiana has been a surface dweller in the conference for a long time, with the school and state known more for their basketball than football exploits.
However, they hired head coach Curt Cignetti two years ago, and in one year, he had them get a winning season and the next, they were the National Champions.

Indiana Hoosiers defensive end Stephen Daley thought his college career ended in December when he suffered a season-ending knee injury during the Big Ten championship postgame celebration.
Now, he's back.
Four days after a U.S. District Court judge in Colorado ruled high school players from the 2022 graduating class could play their fifth college season, Daley returned to the practice field for the defending national champions. He'll be limited in early workouts, but coach Curt Cignetti remains hopeful it won't take one of the nation's most disruptive defensive linemen in 2025 long to get back to full speed.
"He looks pretty good. He's on a modified program where he'll dress out for practice, participate in some individual right now, no 11-on-11, and then get with the strength and conditioning staff, who will bring him along until they feel confident he's ready to go," Cignetti said Wednesday after the team's first summer practice. "I don't think it's going to be real, real long because he was training to be ready for next year in the (National Football) League, so it looks like he's in pretty good shape."
Daley's return solidifies what was already expected to be a deep, experienced, talented group of defensive linemen.

Indiana football has cancelled another future non-conference series, this time against Notre Dame. The Hoosiers and Fighting Irish were set to meet in Bloomington and South Bend in 2030 and 2031 seasons in a pair of games agreed to years ago when Tom Allen and Brian Kelly were still leading their respective programs.
Notre Dame has replaced those games with a rescheduled series against historic rival USC. It remains to be seen how Indiana, which reportedly requested out of the series, replaces those gaps in its schedule.
As of now, the Hoosiers have no power conference opponents in future non-conference schedules. Indiana has previously cancelled series against both Louisville and Virginia. Indiana's approach to non-conference scheduling predates Curt Cignetti's hiring as head coach, with the aforementioned Louisville series being cancelled during Tom Allen's time leading the program.
