Judd Nelson made a rare public appearance in West Hollywood this week, looking a lot different than he did as an '80s teen icon.
In photos shared by the Daily Mail and published on Friday, September 11, the Breakfast Club star, 66, stepped out in an eclectic layered look — camo pants, a brown shirt and a loosely ***** oned plaid overshirt in blue, red and white, all topped off with a black trench coat. He rounded out the outfit with a gray ball cap and sunglasses. But the real transformation came from his beard: long, gray and scruffy, it obscured much of his once-famous face.

Nelson grinned as he geared up, strapped on a sticker-covered black helmet, hopped on his motorcycle and headed off into traffic.
The Suddenly Susan alum tends to avoid the red-carpet circuit and public events, but he's a familiar sight to Angelenos who spot him weaving through the city on two wheels. His love of motorcycles even led to a memorable mishap decades ago on his first day filming 1991's New Jack City alongside Ice-T and Chris Rock.

Winning the program's first state championship in 2025 - in his first season no less - hasn't affected St. Ignatius football coach JaJuan Lawson or his Wildcats one bit. Despite losing 38 seniors to graduation, including eight All-West Catholic Athletic League performers, St. Ignatius has been perhaps the most impressive team in the WCAL through two weeks. The Wildcats have recorded back-to-back identical 42-7 wins over two-time North Bay state champions San Marin-Novato and Marin Catholic-Kentfield.
Senior running back Luke Tribolet has been a workhorse with 34 carries for 208 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Isaac Liu has been terrific with 23 completions in 32 pass attempts for 350 yards and five touchdowns, three to junior Davion Moffett.
The defense has exceeded all expectations, led by junior linebacker Jack Riedy (12 tackles) and sophomore defensive back Casey Nelson (two interceptions, two caused fumbles, two recoveries).
"I don't think winning a state ***** le created any extra pressure on these kids," Lawson said. "We play in the most difficult league in Northern California. We're trying to get back to the top of the league honestly and that's what drives us. … New group, new goals."
The new goal is getting some revenge on Friday night and to beat one of the best teams in Northern California when the Wildcats visit Acalanes-Lafayette (2-0). The Wildcats, ranked seventh in the Metro Area, lost a wild 42-35 game last season in San Francisco to Acalanes, which is currently ranked No. 5 in the Bay Area.

The Baltimore Ravens are preparing for an Indianapolis Colts roster that underwent meaningful changes on both sides of the ball. Indianapolis retained Daniel Jones as its starting quarterback and added veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen to a passing game featuring Alec Pierce, Josh Downs, and Tyler Warren. Allen gives Jones an experienced route runner who can create separation on third down and in the red zone. The Colts also reshaped portions of their offensive line. Tanor Bortolini is listed as the starting center, with Matt Goncalves at right guard and Jalen Travis at right tackle. Quenton Nelson and Bernhard Raimann provide continuity on the left side, but Baltimore can test the newer combinations with its rebuilt defensive front.
Indianapolis made its most significant defensive investment in the secondary. Sauce Gardner joins Charvarius Ward at cornerback, giving the Colts two accomplished players capable of challenging Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman, and Baltimore's other receivers. Cam Bynum and rookie A.J. Haulcy are listed as the starting safeties.
Arden Key was added to a defensive line that already included DeForest Buckner, Grover Stewart and Laiatu Latu. That group should present an immediate test for a Ravens offensive line breaking in new starters at center and right guard.
The Colts' roster is deeper and more experienced in several critical areas. Baltimore still has advantages with Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry, but Indianapolis possesses enough talent to make Jesse Minter's debut uncomfortable if the Ravens fail to establish control early.

The Diamondbacks came into the game looking for a series win, and with a little bit of luck, putting some more ***** e between their competition for the final NL Wild Card spot. Having Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound was a point in their favor, but the offense still RVSP'd maybe when invited to the game.
The Diamondbacks were quiet in the top of the first, with the only baserunner being a Geraldo Perdomo hit by pitch, and that allowed the Astros to strike first. E-Rod got Jeremy Pena to ground out, but Yordan Alvarez absolutely clobbered one for a solo home run. That was the first indication that Rodriguez didn't have his best stuff today, but the next few batters hammered that home, even if there wasn't much damage done. He walked both Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker, but alternated those walks with a line out from Jose Altuve and got out of the jam with a Nelson Velasquez strike out. 0-1 Astros
This, of course, did raise some concerns amongst the faithful about the early need to score more than one run. That's been a challenge for the Diamondbacks, last night's four run outbreak aside. The offense decided to do some to ***** uage those fears, but did not manage to score multiple runs right away. Corbin Carroll started off the second inning with a double, advanced on a sac bunt from Tommy Troy, and then scored on a sac fly from James McCann. Illdemaro Vargas tried to keep things going with a two out single, but Lawler was unable to step up and ended the inning with a line out to third. Tied 1-1
Rodriguez issues with command continued right away in the bottom of the second, walking Dalton Varsho. Never a good idea to walk someone like him, as he showed when he stole second to get into scoring position two outs later. Too late for it to matter, though, as Jeremy Pena only saw three pitches and flew out to end the inning.
The third inning was… something. Perdomo singled to lead off the inning, bringing Ketel Marte to the plate. Marte got an 86 MPH changeup down and away and turned it around for what looked like an easy single. The only with that is the ball also acted as a heat seeking missel straight to Perdomo's helmet. He hit the ground immediately and quickly found himself surrounded by trainers from both teams. Eventually he left under his own power to a nice ovation from the Houston crowd, as one does.

Texas A&M's season opener vs. Missouri State kicks off on Saturday night, and after a productive preseason, coach Mike Elko, entering Year 3 at the helm after leading the Aggies to the College Football Playoff last season, is confident that his revamped roster is ready for battle, facing the new nine-game SEC schedule that features road tests vs. LSU, Missouri, Alabama, South Carolina, and Oklahoma.
Last week, Mike Elko's first in-season press conference revealed that a pair of redshirt freshmen will miss the season due to injury: running back Tiger Riden and defensive tackle Chace Sims were set to compete for reserve roles but will now have to wait until the 2027 offseason to compete for rotational roles.
Combined with former five-star wide receiver Jerome Myles and former four-star OL Nelson McGuire departing the program for unknown reasons, Elko's various media appearances on Wednesday did not include any new injury updates, which is obviously great news for the Aggies, who will heavily rely on their depth at every position to get through the nine-game conference schedule.
Most importantly, senior linebacker Daymion Sanford is on track to make his debut after suffering a lower-body injury to his fibula during the Maroon & White Game, as Elko stated that Sanford remains a "game-time decision" but is on track to play vs. Missouri State.
"Right now, yes. Probably still a little bit of a game-time decision. To ask me right now, I anticipate him being out there," Elko told TexAgs about Sanford on Monday.

The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose more than 3 basis points Tuesday to 4.79%. Driven higher by concerns over the latest flare-up in the war against Iran and its effects on fuel costs and inflation, the yield touched its highest level since January 2025 in trading during the day.
The continuing bond selloff has driven up government borrowing costs around the world. Eshe Nelson of The New York Times noted today that ******* an is seeing 10-year yields above 3% for the first time in 30 years and Germany now has the highest 10-year rates since 2011 (see the Times's chart below).
"A combination of factors are prompting investors to demand higher returns to hold government debt: a flood of borrowing by the world's richest nations, expanding budget deficits, persistent inflation and few signs that countries are able or willing to take steps to improve these conditions," Nelson wrote.
Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi, chief investment officer of the Americas at UBS, said she expects to continue to see heightened volatility in the bond market. "With no clear path to reopening the Strait after six months of war, inflation worries remain elevated," she said in a note, per CNBC. "Uncertainty over the Federal Reserve's policy outlook, fiscal concerns, and rising AI-related debt issuance have all kept bonds under pressure."
Ed Al-Hussainy, a portfolio manager at Columbia Threadneedle, told the Times that it's difficult to "disentangle" the causes of the rate surge. "The only thing we can say right now is that they're all pointing in the same direction," he said, "and that's in the direction of higher rates, and they're doing it globally."

HOUSTON (AP) — Nelson Velázquez hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie, Hayden Wesneski and two relievers combined on a three-hitter and the Houston Astros defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on Wednesday night.
With one out in the eighth, Yordan Alvarez singled and Isaac Paredes walked before Jose Altuve was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pinch-runner Nick Allen was thrown out at home trying to score on a grounder by Daulton Varsho back to Sean Newcomb (2-4) before Velázquez laced his single into left-center field.
Wesneski allowed one hit with five strikeouts over seven shutout innings. He has allowed one run and five hits over his last three starts, a span of 17 innings. A.J. Blubaugh (5-2) gave up two hits in the eighth before Josh Hader pitched the ninth for his 22nd save.
Wesneski retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced, including 12 straight between a one-out walk to Sam Antonacci in the third and a one-out walk to Braden Montgomery in the seventh.
Davis Martin scattered five hits with three strikeouts over 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his first start since Aug. 13. Martin, who had been on the 15-day injured list with a right middle finger blister, was activated before the game.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the offseason determined to create more competition and depth along the edge. After watching Jack Pyburn throughout the preseason, they may eventually wonder whether they let one of their more intriguing young pass rushers get away too soon.
Tampa Bay waived Pyburn as part of its final roster cuts despite the undrafted rookie putting together one of the strongest preseasons on the team. Pyburn finished with four sacks, including two against the New York Jets and another two in the preseason finale against Jacksonville. His four sacks were tied for the most among edge defenders during the preseason. A numbers problem was always going to exist. The Buccaneers spent significant resources rebuilding the position, adding first-round pick Rueben Bain Jr. and veteran Al-Quadin Muhammad to a group that already included Yaya Diaby, David Walker and Anthony Nelson. With only so many roster spots available, Tampa Bay was eventually going to have to make a difficult decision. The gamble was likely that he would clear waivers and potentially remain available to the organization. Instead, the Kansas City Chiefs claimed him almost immediately, placing Pyburn on their 53-man roster and preventing Tampa Bay from bringing him back.
Preseason sacks don't automatically translate to the regular season, and Pyburn was often working against backups. Still, he did exactly what a young player is supposed to do with limited opportunities. Todd Bowles praised his work ethic and production after his two sack performance against New York, noting that Pyburn had taken advantage of the opportunities he received despite being buried behind a deep group of edge rushers, as Pyburn has a 21.4 percent pass rush productivity rate on true pass sets and a 23.8 percent win rate during the preseason.
The Buccaneers couldn't keep every promising edge defender, and their revamped group should be significantly deeper than it was a year ago. But if injuries strike or Pyburn develops into a contributor for Kansas City, this move will become much harder to defend. Tampa Bay spent the offseason searching for young players who could get after the quarterback. Pyburn showed legitimate signs of being one of them, and now the Buccaneers won't get the chance to find out what he could have become in their defense.

Leading into the start of the regular season, outlets across the media landscape released their listing of the Top 100 players in the league, and as usual, there were some snubs.

A baseball season always comes with plenty of ups and downs. Nelson Velázquez's August alone included more than its fair share of downs.
The 27-year-old outfielder was designated for ***** ignment twice by two different teams, but just a week after that second team brought him right back, he delivered a huge home run in the Houston Astros' 6-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday at Daikin Park.
It was Velázquez's first hit for the Astros - the team that had designated him for ***** ignment just 11 days earlier - in a stint that had included just 11 at-bats, entering Monday, spread over two stints in August.
"Finally," he said with a smile in a celebratory Astros' clubhouse.
Velázquez was 0-for-12 with a sacrifice fly with his new team when he stepped to the plate with two outs and a runner on third in the fourth inning. He took a 1-1 belt-high fastball from White Sox starter Anthony Kay and blasted it 415 feet, banging it off the concrete barrier below the train tracks in left field.

The Houston Astros got key hits from Nelson Velázquez and Cam Smith to start strong on a tough stretch of games that could decide their fate in the American League West.
The Astros beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3 Monday night at Daikin Park in the first of 13 straight games against potential playoff teams with National League wild-card contenders Arizona Diamondbacks coming to town after the White Sox (72-65), who lead the AL Central, followed by a road trip to play likely NL wild-card team Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays, who have the best record in the American League.
The win pushed the Astros' record against opponents who are .500 or better to a Major League-best 26-14 (.650). They maintained their two-game lead over the Texas Rangers in the AL West and increased the lead over the Seattle Mariners, the defending division champions, to six games. Houston also climbed within 2 ½ games of the White Sox for the second seed in the postseason, which comes with a bye past the wild-card round.
The Astros (70-68) trailed 2-1 with two outs and **** ody on in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Smith sparked something with a triple, Velázquez delivered his first hit since the Astros claimed him off waivers three weeks ago, a two-run homer that banged off the barrier just below the train tracks in left field.
Smith helped add to the lead in the following inning. After singles by Christian Vázquez, Yordan Alvarez and Isaac Paredes loaded the bases, Christian Walker brought home a run with a walk to make it 4-2 Astros. The White Sox opted to pull starter Anthony Kay after he struck out Daulton Varsho so righty Trevor Richards could face Smith. It didn't work. Smith ripped a 2-2 changeup down the left-field line for a two-run double and a 6-2 lead.

The White Sox disappointed in the first game of this four-game series in Houston, falling 6-3 to the Astros.
Things were calm until the third inning, when Anthony Kay saw a little base path trouble after a throwing error and a walk put two runners on. Yordan Alvarez sent Nick Allen in to score with a ground out, but a fly out straight to Sam Antonacci ended any further damage.
The White Sox knotted the score 1-1 right away, as Colson Montgomery doubled in the top of the fourth with one out, Chase Meidroth singlingand him home. Tristan Peters was plunked, and in a pickoff attempt, the ball got away, sending Meidroth to third. Antonacci picked up a walk (without being hit!) to load the bases with two outs. Houston starter Peter Lambert's command in the fourth drastically dropped, as he walked Munetaka Murakami to force in the lead run. Miguel Vargas left the bases loaded with a liner to second, but the Good Guys were up, 2-1.
Braden Montgomery got caught in-between on a Cam Smith liner to right, and as has happened too frequently that ball skipped past him for a triple. Kay was frazzled by the three-bagger, so much so that Nelson Velázquez crushed a home deep and high to left, making it 3-2, Astros.
It got worse from there, as the White Sox mustered no offense while Houston added on. In the fifth, three singles loaded the bases, with just one out. Instead of a pitch that would prompt a ground-ball double play to end the inning and keep the score tight, Kay walked in a run. Kay bounced back with a K, but with two outs was pulled in favor of Trevor Richards, who surrendered a double to Smith double and stretching the deficit to 6-2.

Longtime baseball reporter Francys Romero reported Sunday evening that Cuban OF Lazaro Montes will be called up to the Seattle Mariners, with Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reporting that the move is expected ahead of Tuesday's game in Boston, coinciding with the expansion of rosters to 28 for September call-ups. Montes is in transit to Boston but is not necessarily expected to be activated for Monday's series opener at the Red Sox.
Montes has been one of the most powerful sluggers in the minor leagues since arriving in pro ball after training in the Dominican Republic as a teenager. Progressing through the same program that produced Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez, the comparisons for the ****** anic lefty have been common. They're not quite accurate, however. Montes is a huge kid, a 21 year old listed at 6'5, 210 whose frame is as massive as his smile. Like Alvarez, while he moves well for his size, his gait and foot speed are never going to reflect as plus defensively, though Montes has good baseline athleticism that helps him make many 50/50 plays despite middling range. Moreover, his arm is absolutely massive, a profile similar to an early-career Nelson Cruz. Not just that, but Montes is a high-effort player in all phases, occasionally stunning opponents with his pace and hustle.

But that's not the main thing Lazaro Montes is all about. The reason he's been a top-100 prospect and one of the most anticipated hitting prospects in years for Seattle is gargantuan power that's seen him club 21 homers in 2024 across 542 PA at a teenager, then 32 a season ago between High-A and Double-A, and now 38 big flies in 537 PA across Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma. At every level, Montes has been a variation of highly consistent, slugging massively, walking prominently, and whiffing most of the time he's not doing one of those two options.

The Basha and Chandler high school football teams both showed why they are nationally ranked during their season-opening game on Saturday, Aug. 29.
Each time Chandler scored, it was answered by Basha with either a big play by receiver Makai Nelson or a defensive statement during the top-ranked Bears' 37-26 win before an overflow crowd at Basha High and a national TV audience on ESPN.
The game was a rematch of last year's Open Division **** le game, won by Basha. Both teams entered the game ranked among the Top 25 nationally, with Basha No. 1 in The Arizona Republic's preseason 6A rankings and Chandler No. 3.
This game was a much more competitive contest than last year's championship, which Basha won 34-7.
"They battled through adversity," Basha coach Chris McDonald said of his team. "They got punched in the mouth, and they punched back."

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered their preseason finale with several roster spots and position battles still to sort out. Their 19-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars may have provided some answers, although not necessarily the ones Tampa Bay wanted. The Buccaneers finished with only 120 total yards, went 2 of 12 on third down and failed to score. Still, there were a few positives buried inside an otherwise difficult night.
If anyone helped themselves Friday night, it was Jack Pyburn. The rookie edge rusher finished with two sacks and three tackles for loss, consistently finding his way into Jacksonville's backfield. Tampa Bay's defensive front produced most of the team's bright spots, finishing with four sacks as Anthony Nelson and Josiah Green also got to the quarterback. Pyburn's performance was especially important as final roster decisions approach. Tampa Bay has spent the offseason rebuilding its front seven, and his ability to provide energy and production off the edge gives the coaching staff something to consider as they build the final 53. Pyburn has certainly played himself into a position where the coaching staff has to find him a spot.
Jalon Daniels had arguably his biggest opportunity of the preseason after being given the start, but he wasn't able to capitalize on it. Daniels completed 8 of 15 passes for 57 yards while taking three sacks and losing a botched snap, a glaring issue over the preseason. After helping lead comeback victories in Tampa Bay's first two preseason games, Daniels struggled to generate anything consistently against Jacksonville. He wasn't helped by his receivers, either. Dean Patterson IV and Kameron Johnson dropped third-down passes early, while Garrett Greene also failed to secure a catchable ball. Daniels' previous performances showed why Tampa Bay has been intrigued by the undrafted rookie, but Friday reminded everyone he remains a developmental quarterback. If there was a legitimate opportunity to overtake Jake Browning for the backup job behind Baker Mayfield, the finale did not do anything to solidify his case.
There isn't much positive to say about an offense that finishes with 87 yards and zero points. Tampa Bay punted on six of its first seven possessions and struggled to protect its quarterbacks, sustain drives or establish the running game. The Buccaneers didn't record a single first down in the second half as Jacksonville's defensive front controlled the line of scrimmage. The offensive line remained a major issue, and receivers failed to come down with the ball. Then came the special teams breakdown that put an exclamation point on the night. Michael Wortham returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, extending Jacksonville's lead to 19-0 and turning an already frustrating night into a nightmare final score.

In their final preseason game, the Buccaneers were blanked by the Jacksonville Jaguars 0-19, capping off what was otherwise a solid preseason for Tampa Bay. The Bucs were disappointing, especially on offense, which couldn't get anything going regardless of who was under center, and on special teams, which reverted to old bad habits. The defense largely held up its end thanks to another great night of pass rush and secondary play. A solid defensive effort went for naught thanks to the offensive implosion, which likely saw the end of Jalon Daniels' hopes to be Baker Mayfield's primary backup.
Here are the studs and duds from the Bucs' preseason finale loss to the Jaguars:
By all appearances, Jalon Daniels was auditioning for the rare third quarterback spot on the Bucs' 53-man roster. Unfortunately for him, it went almost as badly as it could have against the Jaguars. Daniels was sharp early, but his receivers were anything but. Then came the fumbled snap in the second quarter, a problem that carried over from last week's matchup against the Chiefs.
Daniels then took three sacks, three more than in any previous preseason game. He finished with just eight completions on 15 attempts and just 57 pass yards. While Daniels remains the Bucs' most dynamic quarterback from the preseason, it is unlikely he did enough to prove himself reliable enough to overtake Jake Browning as QB2.
One of Tampa Bay's few highlights was the play of its outside linebackers, who frustrated the Jaguars' offense all night. David Walker was unstoppable once again, winning a third of his pass rushes per PFF. Anthony Nelson continued his productive preseason, recording a sack and a quarterback hit. Jack Pyburn played like someone who did not plan on playing for LSU this year, leading the team with two sacks, three tackles for a loss and two quarterback hits. Tampa Bay's edge rush looks much improved from last year heading into this season.

Chris Braswell entered the NFL as a second-round pick expected to eventually become an important piece of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' pass rush. Two years later, the former Alabama standout could be fighting to keep his place on the roster.
Pro Football Focus included Braswell among 10 NFL players currently on the roster bubble ahead of the 53-man cutdown deadline. PFF pointed to both his limited production and Tampa Bay's improved depth at edge rusher as reasons his future with the team has become uncertain. Through his first two seasons, Braswell has played just 618 defensive snaps. He has generated 35 pressures on 322 pass rushing opportunities while earning a 61.0 overall PFF grade. Those numbers haven't provided the type of development the Buccaneers hoped to see after selecting him 57th overall in 2024.
The Buccaneers selected Rueben Bain Jr. in the first round this year and signed veteran Al-Quadin Muhammad, adding two more options to a room already featuring Yaya Diaby. Not to mention tenured man Anthony Nelson has also made a strong case this preseason with a 92.6 overall PFF grade, while David Walker, who missed his entire rookie season with a torn ACL, has already shown more in one preseason than Braswell has in two years having earned an 80.5 pass rush grade. Meanwhile, Braswell earned a 34.4 overall PFF grade in the opener before missing Tampa Bay's second preseason game. In the chances he has had, Braswell has consistently been swallowed by offensive tackles and shown little to no juice in comparison to the others in the OLB room. In fact, he recorded no stats against the New York Jets.
Moving on from a former second-round pick after only two seasons wouldn't be an easy decision, especially since Braswell is still entering his third year and remains on a cheap rookie deal, but draft status can only provide security for so long when other players are producing. Braswell should have one final opportunity against Jacksonville to show why Tampa Bay should continue investing in his development.

Over the summer, the basketball world sadly lost a legendary figure. Former NBA player, coach and Hall of Famer Don Nelson passed away at the age of 86-years-old in early August. While the NBA world is still mourning the loss of the coaching visionary and five-time champion, the Warriors will pay tribute to their former coach when they suit up for the 2026-27 NBA season.
On Wednesday, the Warriors announced they would be wearing a special band on their jerseys for every game during the 2026-27 NBA season featuring the word "NELLIE". The patch will sit near Golden State's jersey sponsor on one of the shoulders.

Nelson played 14-years in the NBA, winning five championships with the Boston Celtics before starting a legendary coaching career. The former Iowa Hawkeye went on to coach a total of 31 seasons in the NBA, including two stints with the Warriors over 11 seasons. Prior to joining the Warriors bench, Nelson coached 10 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks.
Nelson then joined the Warriors in 1988, leading Golden State to the postseason behind Chris Mullin, Mitch Richmond and Tim Hardaway. Nelson then went on to coach the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks. Nelson returned to the Bay Area in 2006, leading the Warriors back to the playoffs with the "We Believe" Warriors featuring Baron Davis, Jason Richardson, Monta Ellis, Stephen Jackson, Matt Barnes and Al Harrington.

Shelley Fabares' family has confirmed the cause of her death last week. Relatives told People that that longtime TV and film actor died of pneumonia, after having been diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis. She'd had a liver transplant 26 years ago.
Fabares died August 22 at 82.

A Florida high school football player has been held on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) hold for over a week, as first reported by TCPalm, part of the USA TODAY Network.
Emmanuel Nelson, an 18-year-old senior at Port St. Lucie High School, was driving a silver Toyota SUV when he was pulled over for going 45 mph in a 20-mph school zone, according to St. Lucie County court records obtained by USA TODAY. He received a citation for unlawful speed in a school zone on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
According to the police report, which was obtained by USA TODAY on Aug. 27, in the midst of the traffic stop, the officer ran Nelson's driver's license, which revealed he wasn't a U.S. citizen and that his working permits had expired. Nelson is originally from Haiti.
Because Nelson is a documented non-U.S. citizen, the officer contacted ICE, which placed a detainer on Nelson to determine where he should be placed into deportation proceedings. He was then arrested in handcuffs and transported to the St. Lucie County jail, where he was held for a week before being transferred to ICE custody in Broward County, where he remains as of this publication.
"It's just been a weird situation for the whole team, and it's not just for me," Port St. Lucie head coach Everette Alford told TCPalm. "All of his best friends are out there on the field, and they're missing him."

There is a question hanging over the small carrier world right now, and two of the most knowledgeable transportation attorneys in the country did not flinch from it when they sat down separately on The Long Haul. The question is whether the small carrier, the one-truck owner-operator and the five-truck fleet, still has a viable future as an independent business, or whether the forces set in motion by the Supreme Court's Montgomery decision are quietly pushing that operator toward extinction as an independent and into the arms of a larger carrier.
Neither attorney sugarcoated it. Brian Nelson, a partner at Taylor Nelson Slattery Bernard in St. Petersburg, Florida, who spent years as general counsel inside a broker, a motor carrier, and a 3PL under one roof, walked through the legal machinery now bearing down on carriers. Greg Feary, president and managing partner of Scopelitis, the firm the biggest fleets in the country call when things go wrong, went further and named the outcome he is already seeing. Together, their two conversations form the clearest picture available of where the small carrier stands, and it is a picture every independent operator needs to see.
Start with the ruling itself, because everything else flows from it. In Montgomery v. Caribe Transport, decided this May by a unanimous 9-0 Supreme Court, the justices answered a single question: do brokers have a duty to select carriers that operate safely over the roadways? The Court said yes. As Nelson explained, that put brokers back into what he called the firing squad, meaning they can no longer get a negligent selection lawsuit dismissed early on the grounds that federal law preempts it.
Before May 14, in most of the country, a broker sued after a crash could file a motion to dismiss and often walk out of the litigation quickly on preemption grounds. Nelson described the old routine: file the answer, file the motion to dismiss, argue there is no valid claim, and get out. That door is now closed. As Nelson put it, brokers can no longer rely on that early exit, which means they now have to go through discovery and potentially all the way to summary judgment. That longer, more expensive path is why insurance companies are raising rates, because they know they will have to pay defense costs deeper into every case.
Nelson was careful to note that causation still matters. A plaintiff still has to prove that the specific thing the broker was negligent about, say, selecting a carrier with poor vehicle maintenance, actually caused the crash. But he explained how plaintiffs get around that requirement using what is called the reptile theory. The argument runs that if a carrier is bad at one thing, hours of service, for instance, a jury will believe they must be bad at everything, including whatever actually caused the wreck. The practical consequence, Nelson said, is that a carrier can no longer afford to be excellent at four things and poor at one. In his words, you have to take a hol

The pushback lands at an awkward moment for Bessent. The national debt just hit a fresh milestone and a closely watched Federal Reserve speech is only days away. Both developments raise the stakes for whatever the Treasury decides to do next.
Interest rate strategists at Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo both said the Treasury Department's expanded bond buybacks will do little to reverse the recent jump in long-term yields. Rates on 10- and 30-year Treasuries briefly dropped after the announcement, then rose again, erasing much of the initial relief, Bloomberg reported.
Goldman Sachs strategists George Cole and William Marshall wrote in an August 21 research note that the buyback expansion "does not address what we see as the main sources of recent long-end volatility." They added that the buybacks are "unlikely to meaningfully reset rate levels even if scaled up."
Wells Fargo strategists led by Erik Nelson made a similar case in their own August 21 note, arguing that lowering long-end yields would require macroeconomic shifts rather than Treasury market operations. They pointed to a slowdown in growth and inflation, less uncertainty around Federal Reserve policy, fiscal consolidation, or a decline in investment-grade corporate bond issuance as the kinds of catalysts actually needed to move yields lower.

Justin Baldoni's attorney, Bryan Freedman, is declaring a legal victory after a judge awarded Blake Lively only a fraction of the nearly $8 million she requested in attorneys' fees and costs. While Freedman expressed support for the California law used to grant Lively the award, he argued that it was applied in a way lawmakers never intended. The attorney also took a pointed shot at Lively, accusing the actress of attempting to use the legal system for her "own personal gain."

Freedman addressed the ruling in a statement to TMZ, describing California Civil Code Section 47.1 as "not a perfect law, but it is an important one designed to protect real survivors, who deserve to see this law tested and perfected in the court of law."
The law allows a prevailing defendant in certain defamation cases involving reports of ****** ual ****** ault, harassment or discrimination to recover reasonable attorneys' fees and costs. Although Freedman said he fundamentally supports the law's intended purpose, he questioned how it was used in the dispute involving Lively and Baldoni.
"Notwithstanding the fact that the law was applied in ways it was never intended for, my clients intentionally left Section 47.1 to be ruled on without any appellate rights to appeal as part of the settlement agreement, to prevent either party from overturning the law," Freedman said.
