Jul. 29—GRAND FORKS — The Youngstown Phantoms' coaching search has taken an unexpected turn.
A little more than a week after Youngstown began working to finalize a deal to make Brad Berry its next head coach, the United States Hockey League team has relaunched its search.
According to a source, Berry decided to walk away from the job after contract negotiations with Youngstown's ownership/executive group.
Youngstown is looking to replace former coach Ryan Ward, who was recently announced as an **** istant for the Providence Bruins in the American Hockey League.
The Phantoms had a strong pool of candidates when they initially launched their coaching search a couple of weeks ago.

The Boston Bruins hired Trent Whitfield to coach their American Hockey League team in Providence. It's a move many circled once Ryan Mougenel left for the NHL, and now it's confirmed by the team.
Whitfield was waiting in the wings for this chance to coach the P-Bruins. He was behind their bench for the past decade and coached in multiple leagues before that. Now, Whitfield is handed a tough task with the Bruins turning the page on their AHL team.
Mougenel was among the best coaches in the AHL. He built Providence into a great team over the years and had them built in his vision, as a physical and smart team that was different, yet successful. The 2025-26 team was his finest, one that finished the season with the best record in the league to earn him the AHL's Coach of the Year award.
The Bruins came up short in the Calder Cup Playoffs, losing to the Springfield Thunderbirds in a four-game series that exposed their weaknesses. That said, the season showed that Mougenel was one of the league's top coaches and deserving of an NHL promotion.

Seven years after she left the National Women's Soccer League as its most prolific scorer, Sam Kerr marked her return to the league with her first goal since rejoining Gotham FC, an equalizer against Portland Thorns.
The Australia striker was her own toughest critic, admitting she did not think much of her overall performance at Providence Park. But her goal in the 62nd minute saw Gotham tie 2-2, adding to goals from Midge Purce, Renee Lyles and Jessie Fleming. Jayden Perry was later sent off for the Thorns.
"I'm obviously happy to score, help the team, but I expect more from myself," Kerr said post-match. "So I wasn't too happy with how I played. Quite disappointing, to be honest.
"I thought we were quite poor today. But we're probably lucky to get away with the tie in the end. I guess I am happy… that we didn't lose."
Kerr's return has been one of the most significant acquisitions in Gotham's history. The 32-year-old signed with the reigning NWSL champions through the 2030 season after leaving Chelsea this summer, returning to the club where she starred when it was still known as Sky Blue FC.

Mike Boynton Jr. has added some head coaching experience to his Michigan staff.
ESPN's Pete Thamel reported on Monday afternoon that the Wolverines are hiring Brown coach Mike Martin as an ****** istant. Martin, who is 44, has been the head coach at his alma mater since 2012 and holds a 171-202 record.
He did not lead the Bears to an NCAA tournament bid in his 13 seasons in Providence, though he did turn in five winning seasons and led Brown to a CIT bid in 2014 and a CBI bid in 2019. That season, he was also named the Ivy League's Coach of the Year.
Now, he'll provide some experience on staff for Boynton, who enters his first season as head coach after he was elevated following Dusty May's departure. Boynton managed to maintain nearly all of Michigan's roster despite the June coaching change, and now, he's shoring up his new staff.
The Wolverines retained much of their staff but saw some key changes. ****** istant Justin Joyner became the head coach at Oregon State, while Drew Williamson followed May to Dallas as an ****** istant. Akeem Miskdeen is still listed as a member of the Wolverines coaching staff, as is general manager Kyle Church.

PROVIDENCE, Guyana (AP) — Keacy Carty was dismissed on 95 and Shai Hope made an unbeaten 87 in a 131-run third wicket partnership which steered the West Indies to a seven wicket win over New Zealand on Saturday in the first of five one-day cricket internationals.
Carty fell just short of his fifth ODI century, a year after his fourth, as the West Indies surpassed New Zealand's total of 267 with seven ****** remaining. Hope anchored the innings after his partner's dismissal, adding 45 runs from 31 ****** in an unbroken partnership with Sherfane Rutherford who finished 22 not out.
New Zealand leaned again on allrounder Daryl Mitchell to reach 267 after losing the toss and being sent in. Mitchell, whose gritty century in the recent third test against England secured a series victory, top-scored with 65 in an insipid New Zealand batting effort.
Will Young made 49 in an 80-run opening partnership with Henry Nicholls (27) but Michael Bracewell (29), Mark Chapman (27), Tom Latham (25) and Mitchell Santner (21) all failed to capitalize on good starts.
New Zealand was in a position to exceed 300 when it reached the 40th over at 216-4 but its last six wickets fell for 33 runs as it fell short of a total to test West Indies' batters in home conditions.

France eliminated Morocco from the World Cup in today's quarterfinal match at Boston Stadium, winning 2-0 on goals by Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele who scored in the second half to push Les Bleus into the next round and eliminate the Atlas Lions.
France will play the winner of the quarterfinal match between Belgium and Spain in the semifinals. Belgium, which ended Team USA's run in the World Cup, and Spain, which eliminated Portugal in the Round of 16, play their quarterfinal clash on Friday, July 10 in Inglewood, California.

The final World Cup match is set for 4 p.m. today at Boston Stadium, as France and Morocco meet in the quarterfinal round.
The Providence Journal's Jacob Rousseau and Bill Koch are at the match, as they have been throughout the run of games in Foxboro, and will be bringing you live, up-to-the-minute updates. Fans at Boston Stadium saw the frantic excitement of the Scots, the brilliance of Erling Haaland, Paraguay make history, the might of France and the up and coming power of Morocco.
The final match of this tournament in Foxboro welcomes Kylian Mbappé and Achraf Hakimi back to a familiar field. Mbappé supplied two ******* ists, aiding his Golden Boot race, in a 4-1 blistering of Norway in group play. And Morocco doused Scotland's party with a 1-0 victory in Group C.
France is backed to win the match — its 14 goals top the table — in a rematch of the 2022 semifinals. The French booked their championship appearance with a 2-0 triumph against Morocco in that meeting.
Morocco's in clear defensive form with two shutouts across its five Cup games. It hasn't lost in this tournament with a draw against Brazil, which reached the Round of 16, being the lone slip in group play. A penalty-kick victory over the Netherlands led to a 3-0 dusting of Canada in the Round of 16. The Moroccan side, which made history in 2022 as the first African nation to reach the semifinals, is trending in the right direction before another knockout match with France.

A little more than two weeks remain before the New England Patriots begin training camp on July 25, as The Providence Journal continues its weekly, in-depth look at the most interesting position groups on the roster.
This week is a look at the offensive line:
The 2025 fourth overall pick went into last season with high expectations, not only because of his high draft slot but because he would be starting at the most important position on the offensive line — left tackle.
During his rookie season, Campbell, just 21 years old when drafted, was tasked with protecting the blindside of franchise quarterback Drake Maye. Adding that expectation to the already immense pressure he faced just for being the fourth overall pick might have, in hindsight, been asking for too much.
The Patriots at this time last season were viewed as fringe playoff contenders, so any slip-ups Campbell had during the season would have been viewed as part of the developmental process. Then the Patriots started winning more games, and they were gaining more national attention, which meant more scrutiny for those aforementioned slip-ups.

As we prepare to present our Providence Journal All-State teams for the spring season, we're going to to look back at the winter high school sports season, and highlight our high school Players of the Year for those sports.

There wasn’t a more respected – or feared – player in Rhode Island than Bousquet, who wrapped up her career with the Quakers with her fourth All-State nod and third appearance on the All-State team. With Bousquet on the court, Moses Brown was a ***** le contender, reaching the Division I final and falling in a nailbiter against eventual champ Barrington in the state tournament. This season Bousquet scored her 2,000th career point, averaged over 27 points per game and earned Gatorade Player of the Year. She’ll continue her career at Marist University.

The Houston Rockets have had players donning a total of 52 different jersey numbers (and have one not part of any numerical series for Houston ***** istant coach and general manager Carroll Dawson) since their founding at the start of the 1967-68 season, worn by just under 500 players in the course of Rockets history.
To honor all of the players who wore those numbers over the decades, Rockets Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who wore them since the founding of the team all those years ago right up to the present day.
With seven of those jerseys now retired to honor some of the greatest Rockets of all time to wear those jerseys, there is a lot of history to cover.
And for today's article, we will continue with the first of 16 who wore the No. 21, guard alum Johnny Egan. After ending his college career at Providence, Egan was picked up with the 17th overall selection of the 1961 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons.
The Hartford, Connecticut native played the first three seasons of his pro career with Detroit. He also played for the New York Knicks, (then) Baltimore Bullets (now, Washington Wizards), Los Angeles Lakers, and Cleveland Cavaliers before he was dealt to the (then) San Diego (now, Houston) Rockets for the final two seasons of his career in 1970.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's son is embracing his time in the spotlight.
Moses Martin, the 20-year-old son of the "Marty Supreme" actress, 53, and Coldplay frontman, 49, has kicked off his modeling journey by starring in British brand Burberry's newest ad campaign.
The campaign, ****** led "Escape to the Countryside," shows Martin sporting warm-toned and casual looks like polos, T-shirts and ****** on-ups alongside models Edie Campbell, Nora Attal and Sang Woo Kim.
The video ad shows Martin and the others playing a group of friends embarking on a summer road trip in the countryside while flaunting their fits. It features the track "For Hire" by Martin's alternative rock band, "People I've Met," where he serves as a vocalist and guitarist with drummer Orlando Wiltshire and bassist Andrew Suster.
In addition to his modeling and musical pursuits, Martin is presumably still a student at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, as Paltow announced his attendance on Instagram in August 2024.

It’s starting to feel like déjà vu.
For the third year in a row, Illinois season tickets have sold out. It only makes sense that fans are eager to see the Illini in action after a historic season. Illinois went on a run in the NCAA Tournament and reached the Final Four for the first time in over 20 years.
It’s also the third straight year Illinois earned a win in March Madness. While head coach Brad Underwood and his Illini lost a superstar in Keaton Wagler and a gritty veteran in Kylen Boswell, they also kept key contributors in David Mirković, Andrej Stojaković and the Ivišić twins.
Along with the returners, Illinois added freshman Quentin Coleman and Stefan Vaaks from Providence. The Illini are projected to be a top team next season, and the fans obviously agree.

Germany vs. Paraguay has set the record for longest match of this World Cup tournament, as the two sides are heading to penalty kicks after playing two 15-minute halves of extra time, and remain level at 1-1. The teams have so far played a total of 120 minutes plus stoppage time. (The France vs. Iraq match on June 22 lasted nearly four hours in total elapsed time, but that was due to 131 minutes of match delays due to severe weather.)
FIFA rules dictate that matches in the knockout round must produce a winner, and no draws are allowed. There is no golden goal in this format.
In the penalty round, each side takes five penalties, alternating kicks. The team with more goals after five rounds wins. If the match remains tied, it moves to sudden death, in which each team takes one kick per round. If one team scores in the round, and the other misses, the game ends and a winner is crowned.

When it comes to penalty shoot outs, no country has a record quite like Germany.
They've never lost, and they barely miss.
In the elmination rounds of World Cup soccer, if teams are still tied at the end of overtime it heads to a penalty shoot out.
Germany has gone to shoot outs four times in their World Cup history,in France in 1982, Mexico in 1986, England in 1990, and Argentina in 2006. In total, the penalties resulted in 18 shots on net, of which they've only missed once.

Although high schools are letting out for the summer and beach season set to begin for real this week, we're not quite ready to let go of the 2025-26 high school sports season just yet.
This week, The Providence Journal will begin our Spring All-State photo shoots at our downtown offices and our Spring All-State teams will be published – online an in print – in the coming weeks. And today, we're going to launch a new high school sports poll, piggybacking on our June 18 All-State Awards Show held at The Providence Performing Arts Center, featuring URI wide receiver Marquis Buchanan.
At the show, we gave out Player of the Year awards for each sport. This is where you come in. We'll ask you to select the Longplex Athlete of the Season, for each of the three seasons on the high school sports calendar. Below are the Players of the Year for each of the fall sports. Her name was known before she had a chance to race for the Clippers, and two years in, Ludwig has become one of the best in school history. Ludwig’s freshman campaign was beyond impressive, as she finished third at the state meet, and she left little doubt about her talent this fall. The sophomore won gold this fall with a time of 18:17.27, more than 27 seconds faster than anyone else, and then went on to finish fifth at New Englands. It’s hard to imagine what she’ll do the next two years but it will be fun to watch.

Rhode Island isn’t a big state but it has earned a reputation as a place for some of the best golf in the country.
It doesn’t matter where you go in the state. Whether it’s north or south, private or public, 18 holes or just nine, you will find a golf course that offers something that fits your game.
This summer, The Providence Journal wants to find out which courses are most beloved in all of Rhode Island. We plan to review select courses this summer as we have done the last three years, but we want to give the people of Rhode Island a chance to make their opinions heard as we try to find the best golf courses in Rhode Island.
We’ve divided the state’s golf courses into three categories — nine hole, public and private. The lists were derived from member clubs listed on the Rhode Island Golf **** ociation website, as well as clubs The Journal were aware of that are not affiliated with the RIGA.
Those clubs are listed below, with a brief description of each course. We’ll start with the nine-hole courses, followed by the 18-hole public courses, before wrapping up with the private courses.

The Boston Bruins made a head-turning trade on Saturday morning. General manager Don Sweeney decided it was time to move on from 2021 first-round pick Fabian Lysell.
Lysell was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in a one-for-one deal that sent the more experienced 23-year-old Ivan Ivan to Boston.
Lysell was selected with the 21st overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. He spent the 2022-23 season in Providence, posting a respectable 37 points on 14 goals in 54 games.
The next year, his 50-point season in Providence earned him a brief stint with Boston. He made his NHL debut in the 24-25 season, scoring one goal and ******* isting on two others on his way to posting an overall -4 differential.

EAST PROVIDENCE — Wednesday felt more like normal for Miles Russell and his father, Joe.
A morning in the sunshine at Wannamoisett Country Club to start this 64th Northeast Amateur wasn’t all that different from a casual round near their Florida home. Russell fired a 3-under 66 with his father serving as his caddie, closing comfortably on the first page of the early leaderboard.
A few more eyes were on them over the weekend at the U.S. Open, with Russell making the cut and playing his final round on Father’s Day. Joe was summoned from outside the ropes at Shinnecock Hills to make a treasured walk up the final hole alongside his son, the current top junior player in the world as a 17-year-old.
“I don’t think it had totally sunk in yet,” Russell said. “I think it was really cool for both of us — just as cool for me as it was for him. Pretty special.”
More to come is likely in the near future for Russell, a gifted left-hander who finished runner-up here last year. His notable achievements to date include the Junior PGA Championship in 2023, a pair of Junior Players Championship crowns and a selection to the Junior Presidents Cup team with the United States in 2024. Sharing a few moments with his dad on such a stage was something different.

"To go from Belfast, to Rhode Island, to the Middle East, to Glentoran, to Qatar, to Cobh Ramblers, to Ghana and back to Rhode Island in 30 years is an interesting story and I'm glad to get the chance to share it."
Mick McDermott has seen it all during a long coaching career that has taken him all across the world in various roles.
The Belfast native is speaking to BBC Sport NI from Providence, Rhode Island, Ghana's base for the World Cup.
He is part of Carlos Queiroz's backroom staff once again and is also working as a performance co-ordinator for the Black Stars.
It is the second World Cup McDermott has worked at after also linking up with Queiroz for Iran's campaign in 2018, but this one means a bit more to the former Glens boss.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Ever since Scotland fans learned they’d begin the country’s ninth World Cup appearance in Boston, plans were being made for a party.
“I knew there was going to be a tsunami of Tartan Army (Scotland fans),” said Jason Waddleton, a Scotland native and owner of The Haven, a Scottish restaurant and bar in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood since 2010.
He was right.
First, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey agreed to temporarily extend bar and restaurant hours during the World Cup. Similar moves have been made in Kansas, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Washington.
Next came thousands of Scots — one estimate is as high as 50,000 — descending on the Boston area, including nearby Providence, Rhode Island, which has become a home base for many of them over the past few weeks.

On the eve of Scotland’s group stage matchup against Morocco at 6 p.m. Friday at Boston Stadium, Providence’s section of the now-beloved Tartan Army made its biggest donation of the World Cup.
Hundreds of doctors and members of the Tartan Army gathered in the outdoor garden of Hasbro Children’s Hospital to celebrate the Tartan Army’s donation of $10,000 to the facility.
“The Providence Tartan Army are delighted and proud to be able to support this place and what it stands for because it aligns 100 percent with our values,” Providence Tartan Army member Ian ***** said. “When the Tartan Army comes — some people say invades — we sing, we make friends and we hope to leave a place just a little bit better than we found it.”
The ceremony started with a march in which bagpipers and drummers led the more than 100-person army to the outdoor garden. The large group outlined the circular garden when the march had finished.
After a brief introduction, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley talked about the significant impact the Tartan Army has had across Providence in such a brief amount of time.

What’s up, y’all? We are back with another summertime MBB preview, and today we’re going to be looking at the Illinois Fighting Illini. The Illini shocked most of the basketball world last season by finishing 3rd in the Big Ten (a 28-9 record), and making it all the way to the Final Four in the NCAA Tournament, but now they’re back and coach Brad Underwood is looking to build on that positive momentum. They will have to build said momentum without breakout star point guard Keaton Wagler (17.9 points 5.1 rebounds, 4.2 ****** ists per game), though, as he is entering the 2026 NBA Draft and is projected to be taken in the mid-late lottery. They’ll also be without Kylan Boswell (12.3 points, 4 rebounds, 3 ****** ists per game), a 6’2” guard who is graduating.
They will be keeping Andrej Stojakovic (13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1 ****** ist per game) though, which is rare in the current landscape of college sports, and considering Illinois was his third school in three years when he transferred in before last season. Also returning is Montenegrin big man David Mirkovic (13.3 points, 8 rebounds, 2 ****** ists per game), giving coach Underwood a solid front court to build on.
Joining them via the Transfer Portal is Stefan Vaaks, a 6’7” shooting-guard who averaged 15.8 points per game in his only collegiate season at Providence.
The kid pretty clearly patterns his game after Lakers guard Luka Dončić, but takes a decent amount more three pointers per game than he probably should (8.4 of his 12.3 shots per game last season were from beyond the arc). But he shot them at a decent 35% clip, so I can’t fault him too hard for it. I’d still like to see that number even out a little bit, though.
They’ll be rounding out the rest of the roster via the #20 recruiting class in the country (according to 24/7 sports), headlined by 5-star recruit Quentin Coleman, a 6’4” guard from St. Louis, MO. Coleman uses his quickness to hunt the passing lanes on defense and get out in transition but can also step out and knock down the three ball, with a very smooth shooting form. He’s also an above average rebounder for his position, averaging a tournament high 11.4 rebounds per game in the FIBA U18 AmeriCup tournament earlier this June.

Rhode Island is not hosting any World Cup matches, but thousands of Scotland fans have descended on America's smallest state over the last week.
Around 5,000 members of the Tartan Army are staying in the state capital of Providence during the tournament.
The city is 25 miles away from the Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where Scotland will play their second match against Morocco on Friday.
Not only have they created a Tartan Army community in the area, they have also raised thousands of pounds that will be donated to local charities.
Robert Copland from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, said money was the main reason he chose to stay in Providence.

Today in Boston Celtics history, John Mahnken was born in 1922 in West New York, New Jersey. Standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing 220 pounds, Mahnken, an alumnus of Georgetown University, was signed by the Rochester Royals (now known as the Sacramento Kings) of the National Basketball League (NBL), a competing league that would later be absorbed by the NBA, following his return from military service during World War II.
In 1946, the former Hoya signed with the Washington Capitals of the Basketball ******* ociation of America (BAA), a precursor league to the NBA, where he encountered a face that would become quite familiar in his later life. It just so happened to be coached by a one Red Auerbach, later to be his coach in Boston as well. Mahnken was traded a total of five times before landing with the Celtics in 1951 for the first multi-season stretch of his career since it began.
He spent four seasons total playing for Boston, recording 3.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.3 ******* ists per game.
It is also the day that former team minority owner Louis Pieri left us in 1967. Former owner of the (defunct) Providence Steamrollers franchise, Pieri helped Celtics founder Walter A. Brown navigate the treacherous waters of the early NBA after his own team went under, eventually becoming a minority owner.
After Brown passed, he and Brown's wife Marjorie split ownership of the team.At least, that is, until the pair could both sell the franchise to Ruppert Knickerbocker Brewing Company in 1965 – rest in peace.

EAST PROVIDENCE — Nick Dunlap won the Northeast Amateur, U.S. Amateur and his first PGA Tour event within the span of a few months beginning in summer 2023.
That sizzling stretch of success started here, and it’s an example of how close players who tee it up at Wannamoisett Country Club in a couple of short weeks are to the top of the golf world. It could be just a matter of time before the next champion on the classic Donald Ross layout is bound for something greater.
Preston Stout captured the 63rd edition of the event last year, riding an 8-under 61 in his second round to cruise by eight shots. He just became the 10th player from Oklahoma State to capture an individual NCAA championship and is among the amateurs who have qualified for next week’s U.S. Open at nearby Shinnecock Hills on Long Island.
“I think it’s the depth of the players today that’s so impressive,” Northeast Amateur cochair Ben Tuthill said Tuesday, June 9. “There are just so many — and a lot who aren’t going to be in our field.
“They just started playing and learning the game and competing at such a young age, and they’re ready to perform at the highest level before they’re old enough to go to college or drive a car. It’s crazy.”

Penn State added another key piece to its 2027 recruiting class on Monday, picking up a commitment from Rivals Industry three-star safety Caleb Cooper.
The Charlotte (N.C.) Providence Day School standout chose the Nittany Lions over Virginia Tech and Wisconsin, as well as offers from Ohio State, Kentucky, Tennessee and a host of other programs. Cooper’s decision comes after his official visit to Happy Valley this weekend, where he was one of more than two dozen official visitors in town.
The 6-foot, 205-pounder opted to join PSU’s class on the visit, securing commitment No. 21 for Matt Campbell and his staff.
