I spent a soggy, smoky night celebrating it all with some of the tallest and most talented people in the country at the 2026 ESPY Awards, hosted by comedian Marcello Hernández at Lincoln Center.
As someone who observes sports more from a cultural angle than a technical one, I admit I find most of the fun of televised competition to be the emotion and drama of it all (besides the whole "who's going to win" element). I also only learned that "ESPY" stands for "Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly" last night. I still had an amazing time.
Here's what I observed as an in-person attendee at the ESPYs that you might not have picked up during the televised broadcast on ESPN.
When I arrived at the theater for the red carpet, the air was heavy with wildfire smoke and the humidity of an impending deluge. Sure enough, it poured. The nasty summer storm cost everyone about an hour of interview time, but fortunately, I got to spend that time indoors chatting with Yahoo's correspondent for the night: Jazzy, a delightfully brilliant 16-year-old journalist. We spent a while fantasizing about the snacks we wished we had brought, and she recommended I try putting Flamin' Hot Cheetos in the freezer for 15 minutes, which I will be doing next time I anticipate being grumpy and impatient.

Texas running back Jonathan Brooks is heading into his third season in the NFL, but due to setbacks in both his rookie and second seasons in the league, the former Longhorns standout has yet to participate in the Carolina Panthers' training camp. However, that's reportedly now changed, according to Brooks' recent health updates.
"Since I first got here, you know, I came in with an injury and he helped me. He took me under his wing and really guided me how to rehab, how to practice, all of that. And then, especially when I got hurt again. He was right there with me. He helped me throughout the whole way," Brooks told reporters after practice this week.

Brooks' injury journey in recent years begins in his final season as a Longhorn, when he suffered his first knee injury prior to being taken in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The second injury forced Brooks to rehab his knee through the entirety of the 2025 NFL season.

The Tigers picked up their first commitment in the class on Thursday when four-star quarterback Trace Hawkins announced he will continue his career at Clemson. The Calhoun, Georgia native selected the Tigers over a group of finalists that included LSU, Duke, Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt after building a strong relationship with the coaching staff throughout the recruiting process.
Landing Hawkins gives Clemson an early foundation for the class, with the talented passer becoming the first player to publicly pledge to the Tigers for 2028. Quarterback has been a priority position for the staff, and Hawkins emerged as one of the top prospects on Clemson's board after several visits to campus over the last year.
His first trip came during the 2024 season, and he made multiple return visits this spring. Hawkins attended Clemson's spring game, participated in the program's Elite Day event and later returned for Dabo Swinney's high school camp in June. Those visits allowed the coaching staff to evaluate him in person while giving Hawkins plenty of opportunities to become comfortable with the program.
The 6-foot-1 signal caller is coming off an outstanding sophomore campaign at Calhoun High School. He completed the season with 2,442 passing yards and 24 touchdown throws while being intercepted only three times. Hawkins also made an impact on the ground, adding three rushing touchdowns.

The start of training camp brings hope and optimism for every NFL fan base. A new season is dawning, and anything is possible. (Except, of course, for the Cleveland Browns settling on a quarterback.)
For the Green Bay Packers, the goals begin with an NFC North ******* le. Winning the division sets a team up well for the postseason — that means a home playoff game and, if you're lucky and good, a first-round bye. None of these are things that Jordan Love has experienced during his tenure as the Packers' starting quarterback so far.
Three straight 7th-seeded playoff appearances should have Love and the Packers hungry for a postseason game at Lambeau Field. But will it happen? Serie A side Lazio have constantly lingered on the edge of chaos and something similar has no unfolded involving midfielder Kenneth Taylor and Rino Gattuso.
La Gazzetta dello Sport report that the incident took place during training today. Lazio are having their pre-season training sessions at the Formello and Taylor was present. The squad was undergoing a tactical drill under the orders of Gattuso today.
Taylor was hit by a teammate and then complained about it. This stopped the game and Gattuso thought this is quite normal during training. Taylor responded by verbally attacking the Italian.
An argument ensued and Gattuso reacted by calling Taylor out and sending him out of the training session. Without further comment, the midfielder went back into the locker room.
Training then continued as normal, obviously without Taylor. A meeting between coach and player is likely in the next few hours to see if—as it appears—the Dutchman will participate in the afternoon session without any issues.

NEW DELHI: Ajinkya Rahane never sought the spotlight. In an era dominated by classy stroke-makers and larger-than-life personalities, he quietly built a reputation as one of India's most dependable overseas batters and one of the country's most respected leaders.

On Thursday, the 38-year-old brought the curtain down on his international career, ending a journey that spanned more than a decade and produced some of Indian cricket's most memorable moments.

Having played 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is, Rahane finished with 8,414 international runs, 15 centuries and 51 half-centuries. Yet, numbers only tell part of his story.

"The reality of life is that everything has a beginning, and everything has an end. When that time comes, you simply have to respect it and move forward. I always relied on timing in my batting, and I've always understood its important," Rahane said in his retirement video.
If there is one chapter that defines Rahane's legacy, it is India's remarkable 2020-21 Test series win in Australia.

After India were bowled out for 36 in Adelaide and Virat Kohli returned home on paternity leave, few believed the injury-hit side could compete, let alone win.

Rahane stepped in as captain and led a depleted Indian team to a stunning 2-1 series victory, one of the greatest triumphs in Indian cricket history.
His century in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne not only rescued India's campaign but also made him the only Indian to score a Boxing Day Test hundred against Australia both as a player and as captain.

Under his leadership, India never lost a Test match, making his captaincy record (6 matches with 4 wins and 2 draws) one of the finest in Indian cricket.
Rahane earned a reputation for producing his best performances away from home. He became the first Indian batter to score both his maiden Test and ODI centuries in SENA countries, proving his ability to thrive in the toughest conditions.

His 12 Test hundreds often came in pressure situations, and remarkably, India never lost a Test whenever Rahane scored a century. He was also the first Indian to score a century in the World Test Championship, adding another milestone to an already impressive career.
One of his finest individual performances came against South Africa when he became the only Indian batter to score centuries in both innings of a Test while batting at No. 5 or lower.

The 2026 football season for the Auburn Tigers is on the horizon. As we anticipate the start of the season, let's introduce you to a key member of the 2026 roster.
Auburn defensive lineman Saint Farrior shares a similar story to fellow lineman Cody Sigler. Like Sigler, Farrior received little attention during the high school recruiting process, transferred to a Sun Belt program after originally signing with a lower-level program, and made his way to Auburn as an upperclassman.
Farrior joins Auburn's roster after spending last season at Appalachian State, and the two years prior at Hampton. He played in just 173 snaps over 14 games in his two seasons with Hampton before trying his luck with another program. The decision to transfer worked for him as he participated in 261 snaps over 13 games with Appalachian State in 2025, a year when Farrior would triple his career total in tackles. His best game during his time as a Mountaineer came against Marshall on Nov. 22, when he logged a career-high five tackles and his first career sack.
He will spend the 2026 season as an Auburn Tiger, where he hopes to see his career continue to flourish. He will work to enter a strong defensive line rotation headlined by Chris Murray. As one of the eldest members of the position group, Farrior has a steady chance of making an impact on the Plains.

ESPN's Bill Barnwell made an All-Backup Team, and two New England Patriots players made the cut.
Barnwell used all backup players and rotation guys to make a 53-man roster. He forced himself to take at least one backup from each team, but he did not take more than two players. His main goal was to go after players who participate regularly on special teams that help fill out the backend of the lineup.
It's also worth noting that he wanted to incorporate rookies on his team. However, the Patriots did not have a rookie representative in this situation. The players Barnwell chose for the Patriots were wide receiver DeMario Douglas and defensive tackle Cory Durden.
Douglas would fall under the category of a rotation guy, although that might change this season, considering he's been working with the starters at training camp. The wide receiver was a productive playmaker last season, recording 31 catches for 447 yards and three touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Durden was initially signed by the Patriots as a member of the practice squad. However, he worked his way up the depth chart and became a regular contributor later in the season.

Georgia will begin the year with one of the most talented rosters in the nation. Sanford Stadium's atmosphere will once again be an essential component to the Dawgs' success this season, as Georgia held an impressive 6-1 record at home in 2025. USA TODAY's Blake Toppmeyer, Paul Myerberg, Jordan Mendoza and Kevin Skiver recently listed their top 10 stadiums in college football, and Sanford Stadium was ranked No. 6.
"The environment 'Between the Hedges' has made the Bulldogs nearly unbeatable at home under coach Kirby Smart. While the literally barking from Georgia fans doesn't always rattle your eardrums, Sanford Stadium can rumble when challenged. Georgia's .918 home winning percentage during the Kirby Smart era is a credit to the program Smart built. It's also a credit to Bulldogs fans."
Georgia will face a handful of tough opponents at Sanford Stadium this fall. The Bulldogs first true test of the season will be against the Oklahoma Sooners in Athens, followed by a highly anticipated matchup against the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Dawgs are set to face the Auburn Tigers and the Missouri Tigers at Sanford Stadium during SEC play as well, and Georgia will use the atmosphere to their advantage.
The Bulldogs have lost just one home game dating back to 2019. Georgia had a 33-game home winning streak snapped against the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2025, but UGA rebounded with ranked home wins over Ole Miss and Texas.
