After a tough series with the New York Mets, the Atlanta Braves returned to Truist Park for a four game set with the Washington Nationals. Though a close one, the Braves came out on top during game one, defeating the Nats 5-4.
Grant Holmes turned in a shaky start, allowing three runs through 4.2 frames. Fortunately, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Mike Yastrzemski picked him up and each homered.

At the outset of training camp, Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur outlined a clear expectation.
Spring practices had been used to "build the foundations," learning what his players are capable of. This, he explained, was different.
"At this point, we as coaches have to make a decision," LaFleur said. "No, this is what he can do. We need to put him in these spots."
From there, it's on the players to execute. These practice reps are no longer experimental; they're foundational.
With that in mind, here's what we have learned from the first week of Cardinals training camp. They have conducted five full practices and two jog-throughs, including four 11-on-11 sessions open to reporters.

Dolphins offensive tackle Austin Jackson has been in Miami since he was the team's first-round draft pick in 2020, which means Jeff Hafley is his third head coach. And Hafley's training camp practices are reminding him of his first head coach.
Asked what practice was like after the Dolphins opened camp, Jackson said it reminded him of Brian Flores, the Dolphins' head coach in Jackson's first two seasons.
"It was fun. It was fun. It was kind of similar to how Brian Flores ran practices, very similar," Jackson said. "We just got to team right away. Not as many seven-on-sevens, hardly any seven-on-sevens, really, with Flo I don't remember any. Definitely, it was nice."
Asked how Hafley's approach differs from former coach Mike McDaniel, Jackson said he likes having the whole team together under Hafley.
"It was a little bit more reps, more team reps in practice, which is nice," Jackson said. "Previous coach was a lot more segmented and very intentional on certain things."

The Florida State Seminoles had to rely on their run game quite a bit in 2025 due to the inconsistency of former quarterback Tommy Castellanos. As a team, they racked up 2,624 yards in 12 games.

Everyone was talking about the training camp scuffle from Day 1 of camp for the Cincinnati Bengals. Some people were concerned that Zac Taylor was letting too much go.
In reality, it was just players going out and competing against one another to get better.
Ja'Marr Chase talked to the media after Day 2 of camp. When asked if he liked seeing that type of fire from the defensive back,
"A lot of competitiveness going on, and getting each other better. That's what I want, exactly what I want. I never seen JD like that. It's new. I like it. I think it makes them guys practice a little harder," he said.
The JD he was referring to is expected nickel corner starter Jalen Davis. It isn't surprising that a former undrafted free agent who has had to scratch and claw his way on the practice squad and roster would be out there with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Davis mixed it up with Chase, but also with Mike Gesicki during day one of training camp.

Texas A&M's 2026 offseason is coming to an end after coach Mike Elko, quarterback Marcel Reed, linebacker Daymion Sanford, and safety Marcus Ratcliffe spoke to the local and national media during SEC Media Days last week, providing an extensive preview of the 2026 season, while all three players provided important updates regarding their personal progress, especially Daymion Sanford's injury status.
It's been a relatively quiet offseason for the Aggies, even though Marcel Reed has made the media rounds with several outlets, including On3, while Mike Elko has made several stops at the various A&M clubs in Texas. Speaking with Jimmy Traina of Sports Illustrated ahead of his comeback, Golic Sr. revealed one more item on his sports broadcasting bucket list, and it's one his son has already crossed off.
"Now that I'm back at ESPN, I am hoping to be able to live out one thing—you talk about one of the most disappointing things of all of my time at ESPN, and Mike got do it twice I think. Mike got to host, or be a part of the hot dog eating contest on July 4. I have never been a part of it. I am hoping as I hopefully finish my career at ESPN I will be asked to be on that broadcast."

Jul. 30—Three Hall of Fame inductions in the span of a month would be an extraordinary accomplishment for most athletic departments.
At Colfax High School, it almost felt inevitable.
During an 11-day span in May, football coach Mike Morgan and girls basketball coach Corey Baerlocher entered their state coaches **** ociation Halls of Fame, while volleyball coach Sue Doering was inducted into the WIAA Hall of Fame.
Each built one of the state's premier programs in their respective sports. Together, they coached 23 state championship teams, hundreds of victories and generations of student-athletes.
Their names now sit alongside another pair of Colfax coaching legends who helped shape the school's athletic identity: longtime boys basketball coach Bob Bafus and former baseball coach Mike Parrish.

Ozzie Albies' two-run single in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie for the Braves, who managed just four hits. Eight of Atlanta's last nine games have been decided by one run.
Victor Mederos (1-0) picked up the first win of his four-year career, giving up a run in an inning of work. Dylan Lee worked a perfect eighth and Raisel Iglesias earned a save for the second straight night, giving him 23 on the season.
Daylen Lile hit two of the three solo home runs for the Nationals off Braves starter Grant Holmes. Lile has 13 for the season. The third was by Luis Garcia Jr., who also had a run-scoring triple and was 3 for 5.
The Nationals have hit 48 homers in July. That is one off the franchise for a month of 49 set in September 2012.

Amid injuries to a couple of their top wide receivers, the San Francisco 49ers have turned to an old friend.
Veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel is returning to the team that drafted him on a one-year deal worth up to $7 million, according to NFL Media and ESPN insider Ian Rapoport.
He'll join a wide receiver corps that includes veteran Mike Evans and rookie De'Zhaun Stribling. Christian Kirk and Ricky Pearsall were expected starters for San Francisco entering training camp, though Kirk is dealing with a calf injury and Pearsall has had a flare-up with the PCL injury in his knee that he suffered last year.
Samuel played the first six years of his career for the 49ers after the team drafted him in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He played the 2025 season with the Washington Commanders, where he led the team in receptions (72), receiving yards (727) and receiving touchdowns (5) amid injuries to quarterback Jayden Daniels and wideout Terry McLaurin.

It was a uniquely Seattle, Pacific Northwest Seahawks day.
The fifth day of training camp was the first day the players were in full pads. Full, real football, for the first time since they won Super Bowl 60 five months ago.
It was the first morning practice of camp. A blue, crystal clear sky. Sun and 74 degrees. Eagles soared from their nests next to the fields. The U.S. Navy's Blue Angels roared over practice on the lush, green grass fields along Lake Washington.
"I don't know if it gets much better than this," coach Mike Macdonald said Thursday, grinning proudly at what he gets to do. "Beautiful weather. Training camp. Pads on. Playing football. We've got bald eagles flying. We've got the Blue Angels in the sky. It's pretty awesome.
"We're very blessed. Pretty awesome day. Great practice. Guys were after it.

Republican Senate candidate Mike Collins ended a press conference Thursday after repeatedly declining to answer questions about his relationship with a son-in-law who promoted White nationalist ideology and circulated antisemitic content online, as first revealed by CNN's KFile.
Collins, a two-term congressman from Georgia, was appearing at Monroe County Hospital to outline his health care priorities.
But reporters pressed him to address online statements from his son-in-law, David Alan Scheer II, and whether Scheer had done business or campaign work for him. Collins said the matter had been "fully addressed" and pivoted to attacking Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff.

The Chargers continued their training camp at The Bolt on Thursday. Throughout the 90-minute session, QB1 made his presence felt in team drills.

The Seattle Seahawks have some big contract decisions coming up on their big defensive tackles. While time is on their side regarding Byron Murphy II, who isn't even extension eligible until next offseason, this year is the last of Leonard Williams' three-year contract. The Steelers took the field for the first organized practice of training camp at St. Vincent College on Wednesday morning. It was the first time Steelers fans could watch favorites, newcomers, and the 2026 draft class at the same time, including third-round pick and former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar.
Allar underwent significant changes to his processing and footwork during OTAs and minicamp, being broken down and built back up again by new head coach Mike McCarthy. Following a strong career at Penn State, but one that left much to be desired, Allar explained after practice how McCarthy is impacting his season.
"Definitely makes you be very detail oriented and have a purpose behind every rep," Allar said. "I think that's the biggest thing I've learned."
Allar missed half the season with a broken ankle but was the first of three players taken by the Steelers in the third round. In 45 career games, 35 starts from his sophomore to senior year, Allar threw for 7,402 yards, 61 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

In about two weeks, EA Sports will release Madden NFL '27 ahead of the 2026 NFL season.
Every year, before the latest edition of the game is released, Madden's player rankings are made public for gamers. Their calculation process for these rankings is extensive, and each position has measurements weighted differently. A lot of the ranking has to do with their performance over the last season, which is why Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels finished with only a 79 overall rating, while 2024 classmates Drake Maye and Caleb Williams finished inside the top 10.
Yes, Daniels was wildly disrespected, but he only played in seven games last season. Even in the games he played, Daniels was nursing injuries, so his game wasn't up to par with his 2024 season.
Daniels isn't the only one disrespected by Madden this year, though. In the rookie rankings, first-round draft pick Sonny Styles ranks 13th overall. He is the highest-ranked MIKE, but he landed behind guys like Keldric Faulk, Malachai Lawrence, and Akheem Mesidor, all of whom were drafted after him in the 2026 NFL Draft. Styles was the No. 7 overall pick, and many believed he'd go somewhere in the top five.

New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel is confident that tight end Eli Raridon will be able to play with NFL-level speed next season.
Speaking at a press conference, Vrabel spoke highly of Raridon and the vision that he has for him for next season. The Patriots are clearly expecting a lot from the rookie third-round draft pick after losing veteran Julian Hill to a season-ending injury.
Austin Hooper also left for the Atlanta Falcons in free agency.
"New offense," Vrabel said. "New scheme. New NFL. Capable, willing learner. We'll see when pads come on. Things change. But I think he's tried to play with the speed that we felt like he had, and may not always have shown."
Raridon is in line to be the Patriots' backup tight end behind Hunter Henry next season. He went for 482 receiving yards in his final collegiate year at Notre Dame and was highly-touted for his skills as a receiver and a blocker.
