On the flight home from Chicago, as he reflects on the 4-2 loss to Leeds that ended Liverpool's United States tour, manager Andoni Iraola will have plenty to think about.
The first-half display was arguably the best since he took charge of Liverpool, but the second was categorically their worst as they conceded four times without reply inside 25 minutes.
Iraola did make a raft of changes at the break and in the second half but that is no excuse for the way they capitulated against Daniel Farke's side.
Their lack of squad depth and physicality was alarmingly exposed and Iraola will be concerned with the ease with which Leeds scored, albeit against an inexperienced backline that finished with Calvin Ramsay, Ifeanyi Ndukwe, Mor Talla Ndiaye and Kostas Tsimikas.
With Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz making their return, Liverpool were excellent in the first half and it is important not to be too critical but perhaps Iraola will be glad in the long-run that he saw this second-half display, where Liverpool's set-piece deficiencies were evident too.

The Dallas Cowboys were willing to take a chance on edge rusher Charles Snowden — they just weren't willing to wait for him to heal up as they try to improve the NFL's worst defense from 1 season ago.
"The Cowboys have signed OL Sebastian Gutierrez and waived OLB Charles Snowden," The Athletic's Jon Machota wrote on his official X account on Sunday.
Snowden signed a 1-year, $1.075 million contract with the Cowboys on June 18 and was suspended almost 1 month later. Snowden was waived with an injury designation as he was dealing with a groin issue.

Rochdale midfielder Will Jenkins faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
He picked up the injury in Dale's pre-season friendly with Halifax Town last Tuesday.
Jenkins, 24, followed manager Ian Watson to the League Two club from South Shields this summer.
"It's the worst possible news," Watson told the club website.
"He's pretty much done everything that you can do inside the knee, which is heartbreaking for him. It was a dream move, and I thought he showed really quickly that he was more than capable at the level."

Williams is entering his third season following a breakout sophomore campaign where he set a franchise single-season passing record, led an NFL record seven fourth quarter comebacks (including the postseason) while leading Chicago to an 11-6 record, NFC North ***** le and playoff win. That was all in one season with head coach Ben Johnson. Now, all eyes are on Williams this summer as he continues to develop under Johnson and make a huge leap in Year 3.

On July 27, Atlanta Braves pitcher Connor Thomas recorded one of the worst outings of the season.
In 2.2 innings, Thomas allowed 10 hits, five walks, three home runs and 11 earned runs in total.
Before entering the game in the sixth inning, the game was tied 3-3. However, it quickly got out of hand as the New York Mets scored 11 unanswered runs en route to a 14-3 win over the Braves.

The Chicago Bears were back at Halas Hall for their fourth practice of training camp on Friday. Despite a weather delay that forced it to be a closed practice, the Bears were able to get some work done in the rain.
While the offense got off to an impressive start to training camp, it was the defense's turn to shine on Saturday, aided a little by the weather conditions. Quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense struggled to get into a rhythm, and the secondary was finally able to best what's been a dominant passing game. There were also some updates in position battles at left tackle and nickel cornerback in the final practice of this first week before the pads come on Monday.

Tarik Skubal is on the move. The Detroit Tigers dealt the two-time American League Cy Young winner to the Los Angeles Dodgers, putting an end to the biggest storyline of the MLB trade deadline. You can see our trade grades for this one here.

Skubal's last start in Detroit was a perfect encapsulation of the Tigers' struggles. He struck out six over 6.2 innings Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles, leaving the game with Detroit leading 7-1. The Tigers proceeded to lose 10-9 in extra innings. At the time, it marked the 18th loss in which Detroit led after the seventh inning, the most in MLB.

Luis Castillo's tenure as a Seattle Mariner has apparently come to an end. The Mariners announced tonight they have traded Castillo to the White Sox in exchange for reliever Seranthony Dominguez, outfielder Nolan Jones, and catching prospect Boston Smith. Per Daniel Kramer, the Mariners aren't sending any money to offset the remainder of what Castillo is owed on the extension he signed in 2022, which runs through 2027 with a vesting option for 2028 if he reaches 180 innings.
In exchange, the Mariners will be absorbing Dominguez's not-insignificant salary for the remainder of this year and the next year of his contract, when he's slated to make $10.5M. Dominguez also has an option for 2028, but it's a mutual option (with a $2M buyout).
The 31-year-old Dominguez is on pace for the worst season of his career; he still collects strikeouts but his walk rate has ballooned over the past two seasons; he's currently walking over 14% of batters faced. Compounding that problem is a serious case of dingeritis – a career-high 16.7% of fly ******* he's allowed have gone for homers, even in Chicago's ******* ious confines. But he does still strike a lot of batters out and generate whiffs, he can still rush the fastball up at 97+, and he's got a full complement of pitches for the Mariners pitching coaches to work with, even if he's primarily a heater-sweeper pitcher as a reliever. It's an expensive gamble, but the Mariners are both solving their rotation logjam (temporarily) and shedding Castillo's contract in the move; if Dominguez can be Mariner-pitching-hive-minded into even a serviceable mid-innings arm, that's a boon to the beleaguered bullpen.
The other pieces coming over in the trade are interesting in their own right. Nolan Jones is probably a name you're familiar with if you were big into prospects a decade-ish ago; he was a second-rounder drafted by Cleveland in 2016 as a highly athletic two-sport athlete and attracted a lot of prospect attention as he made his way up the ladder for his 6'4" frame, easy raw power from the left side, and a star turn in the Arizona Fall League and the Futures Game in 2019. Unfortunately, injuries derailed his ascent, and he was dealt to the Rockies in 2023 for Juan Brito shortly after making his big-league debut. Now 28, Jones has spent time in the bigs but never really latched on consistently (outside of one 2023 season where he seemed to put it all together for Colorado), mostly due to a monstrous K rate compounded by the length of his swing. He's been with the White Sox Triple-A team this season, blocked by the surprisingly good play at the big-league level, and will likely serve a similar role for Seattle as outfield depth at Tacoma.

Las Vegas Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby is among the great players in the NFL at his position. Last season came with its share of challenges for Crosby, but that has not diminished the esteem that he is held in among his peers.

The Brooklyn Nets are at the point in their offseason where not much will be happening between now and when training camp begins in the fall. Brooklyn does not know its entire schedule for the 2026-27 NBA season, but it does know who they will be playing in the preseason and as part of the 2026 NBA Cup where they may have gotten lucky with their scheduled slate.
The NBA announced in the beginning of July what the groups will be within the NBA Cup and the Nets will have a tough slate ahead of them given where they are in their rebuild. As part of being in East Group A, Brooklyn will be facing the Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic, and Milwaukee Bucks, but there is a chance that the Nets could be competitive within the group.
The Nets (20-62) had the worst record of the five teams in the group with the Pistons (60-22), Raptors (46-36), Magic (45-37) were playoff teams with the Bucks (32-50) potentially making it to the postseason if Giannis Antetokounmpo was healthy for the majority of the season. To that point, Milwaukee traded Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat this summer for a package of players and picks so it seems like they're entering a rebuild of some sort.
Detroit should be the best team in this group once again with Cade Cunningham leading the way, but plenty could be unsettled by the fact that center Jalen Duren is yet another player experiencing the downside of restricted free-agency. Toronto could be better than they were last season if their trade for forward Kawhi Leonard goes through, but the investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers potentially circumventing the salary cap to sign him may not be solved until the season begins.
Orlando appears to be running it back with Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner leading the way for their squad, but Brooklyn has made key moves of its own by trading for Minnesota Timberwolves forward Julius Randle along with signing guard Keon Ellis and center Mo Wagner in free-agency. Ultimately, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Nets finish the NBA Cup with a 1-3 record with the potential of pulling off upsets over the Magic and Raptors.

The possibility of Aaron Donald returning to the Los Angeles Rams has never gone backwards, but only inched closer to the three-time Defensive Player of the Year coming out of retirement since the rumors first started. The likelihood that the Rams will add another future Hall of Famer after trading for Myles Garrett took another step forward on Friday, as Sean McVay told the media that "If there's an arrow, it's trending upward."
McVay is finding it harder and harder to keep the worst-kept secret in the NFL. That ever since L.A. traded for Garrett, Donald has wanted to return to the Rams.
"Things are going in the right direction," said McVay on Friday. But he's continuing to preach patience as it pertains to when Donald will return, not necessarily "if" anymore.
McVay doesn't expect until a final decision for at least another week, as the head coach said he doesn't expect an update until the Rams return to Woodland Hills, which will happen after their final Loyola Marymount practice on August 7.

Reddit, Inc. (NYSE:RDDT) may be willing to walk away from roughly $60 million a year to stop Google from turning its discussions into answers that users never leave Google to read. The companies are negotiating a renewal of their 2024 data-licensing agreement, and Reddit has discussed ending Google's access to its content for AI use, the Wall Street Journal reported on July 22. Reddit, Inc. (NYSE:RDDT) fell 8.7% after the report, its worst session since March, according to Barron's.
Google can find generic product descriptions and technical explanations all over the web. Reddit is useful because its users argue about whether a product is actually good, describe unusual problems and update old advice. Those conversations answer queries for which polished corporate pages are nearly useless. Reddit can reasonably demand more money or limits on how that material appears in Google's AI products.

Walking away would carry a cost beyond the licensing check. Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL), through Google Search, also sends people to Reddit, where their visits can be turned into advertising revenue. The Yankees' offense better wake up, as they've scored just two unearned runs in their last 22 innings. Facing a Cubs team that ranks second in the majors with 5.17 runs scored per game and third with a 111 wRC+, they simply cannot afford to give so many ABs away, New York failing to dent home plate in 28 of their last 32 innings played. Fortunately, they'll face a pitching staff that is seventh-worst with a 4.68 FIP, though it's not like the White Sox were much better in that department and were still largely able to silence the Yankees in the final two games of their just-completed series.
Will Warren is coming off one of his worst starts of the season — six runs on six hits in three innings against the Phillies. It's already the fifth start in which he has given up at least five runs, four of those coming since June 20th, Warren posting a 6.57 ERA over his last eight starts after opening the season at 7-1 with a 3.22 ERA across his first 12 starts. To me, the problems appear to be threefold: he can't get lefties out, he struggles to pitch from the stretch, and he suffers a massive third-time-through penalty. That doesn't bode well against a Cubs lineup that features five batters from the left side and is second in baseball with a .340 OBP. In 20 starts, Warren is 7-5 with a 4.41 ERA (102 ERA+), 4.16 FIP, and 102 strikeouts in 102 innings.
The Cubs declined their three-year team option on Shota Imanaga over the winter after he struggled in 2025, the two sides eventually reuniting on the qualifying offer for 2026. Liverpool defender Joe Gomez will miss the start of the new season due to injury.
Gomez, 29, was forced off within 10 minutes of Liverpool's first friendly of pre-season against Sunderland after suffering a muscle issue.
Liverpool went on to win that game in Nashville 4-2 without their longest serving player, but manager Andoni Iraola nevertheless admitted that Gomez's setback was "probably the worst news" he could have been dealt on his managerial bow for the Reds.
Iraola has now confirmed Gomez will face a spell on the sidelines and while he does not yet know for how long, he says it will be "impossible" for the Englishman to make a return before Liverpool's Premier League opener against Newcastle on 23 August.
Speaking at a press conference in Chicago on Thursday morning, he said: "Joe has a muscle injury. I think it was quite clear since he complained straight away so it will depend how he evolves, but he will be some weeks off.

The YouTube golfer, who was once a highly-touted amateur, received a sponsor's exemption to play at the Rocket Classic, his first PGA Tour event since 2016.
Expectations were high for Dalke after he had a strong showing at the BMW International Open on the DP World Tour recently, but in his worst nightmares, he couldn't have dreamed of a worse start in Detroit this week.
He shot an opening-round 81, leaving him second-to-last in the field through 18 holes of golf. Dalke's round featured seven bogeys, a double and a quad as he sprayed it all over the park.
It was a disaster for Dalke, and he took to social media to share his honest thoughts on his start to the event.

The company's shares plunged about 12% on July 14, reaching their lowest level since February, after Ericsson warned that growing component costs, particularly memory chips, will affect margins in the future. HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Raiders general manager John Spytek didn't hesitate to try to improve the NFL's worst offensive line, a unit that made life miserable last season for quarterback Geno Smith and running back Ashton Jeanty.
He snagged three-time Pro Bowl center Tyler Linderbaum out of Baltimore by handing him the richest contract ever for an interior offensive lineman.
His presence and the return of standout left tackle Kolton Miller, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury after just four games, was a much-needed boost.
So there is genuine hope in Las Vegas the line will be better, but how much is difficult to tell.
"I think last year there was a lot of moving pieces," Miller said. "I think the goal is to have the best five out there, build together, add to it each day, and really build for long-term success. This isn't easy. Coaching O-line takes time and it's a lot of work. It's underappreciated. You can't get too frustrated about it. You've just got to find ways to improve each day."

Last season was a rough one for the Indiana State football team's defense allowing an FCS worst 497.8 yards a game, but a new defensive coordinator and charged up players are ready to change that.
ISU coach Curt Mallory said he thinks the defense is really flying around out there. He noted how the defense does everything together from working to celebrating.
"I'm really pleased with coach Morrison and the job he's doing," Mallory said. "I've known Steve for a long time as a player, always wanted to work with him, he's done a tremendous job for us."
With the rough stat last season, Mallory said the game is the most important. That first game will see the Sycamores host Southeast Missouri State on Aug. 29 at 6 p.m.
Mallory said the main thing with turning it around and not finishing last in yards allowed a game is that the team has to complement each other.
