The New York Knicks season-opener for the 2026-27 NBA season is proving to be one of the most valuable regular-season games in recent memory.
The Knicks brought the city its first NBA ****** le in 53 years and re-established basketball as a city-wide passion. With a ****** le-defense campaign ahead in the 2026-27 season, the energy is still high.
The Knicks will open the season on October 20 against the Philadelphia 76ers, receiving their championship rings and raising their championship banner into the rafters.
The Knicks opened their season against the Cleveland Cavaliers last season, but this season opener is proving to be more significant, as prices are reportedly up 526% on secondary markets from last season.
"The cheapest seats on the secondary market for the Oct. 20 opening night game against the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden cost $1,346 a piece, including fees, according to data company TicketIQ. That is a massive 526% increase from the 2025 home opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers, which had a final get-in price of $215."

MIDDLETOWN - There are plenty of words that a veteran football coach like Xavier High School's Sean Marinan would like to hear his starting quarterback say in the season opener. It's safe to say that "hyper" would be pretty far down the list.
However, Maxwell Murphy summarized the forgettable opening quarter perfectly for the host Falcons. Once the nervous energy went away, Xavier took control en route to a 27-2 win over East Haven on Friday night.
"We started off a little hyper," Murphy said. "I was hyper in the first quarter, but we responded really well. Our defense looked great and I think our offense responded well."
Murphy threw two of his three touchdown passes in the second quarter to get the Falcons going. The defense took care of the rest.
East Haven scored first when a high snap on a punt by Xavier sailed out of the end zone. It was still a 2-0 game before Murphy connected with Eli Halvorsen on a 17-yard touchdown pass.

White Sox manager Will Venable jokingly lamented on Saturday that it seems as though the Cleveland Guardians are always winning. True to form, they walked off the Detroit Tigers a couple of hours before first pitch between the Sox and Twins Sunday night. Winners of three out of four in Detroit, the Guardians are the biggest threat to Sox' hopes of winning the division at just 2.5 games back.
They'll face each other three times in Cleveland in a little over a week, but in the meantime, the White Sox have to make sure they're winning at least as often as the Guardians are.
The White Sox did just that against the Twins on Sunday, winning 10-1 while showcasing much of why they are the American League Central frontrunners and why they will be a dangerous team to face in the postseason. In a planned bullpen game, the group of Bryan Hudson, Jordan Hicks, Hagen Smith, Grant Taylor, and Tyler Davis combined to allow just one run while striking out 15 Minnesota batters and walking only one.
"The plan worked," Venable said. "Everyone did a great job. They came out, they executed, got the outs we needed. The line for the bullpen speaks for itself."
There was really only one hiccup, when Grant Taylor gave up a leadoff homer to Brooks Lee and then walked Ryan Jeffers in the seventh inning, but even he went on to **** ert his dominance. After those two batters, he retired the next three in the seventh and struck out the side in the eighth inning.

The Hope College football team proved consistency can be a weapon in its season opener.
The No. 19 Flying Dutchmen scored a touchdown in each quarter and got key defensive stops in a 28-14 win over Denison (Ohio) on the road Saturday, Sept. 5.
Freshman running back Brody Schuitemen (Jenison) rushed for two touchdowns, including a game-clinching 46-yard scamper on fourth down with 4:13 remaining in the game.
Senior wide receiver Kaden DeHorn (Caledonia) and sophomore running back Trey Goike (Orchard Lake St. Mary's Prep) also scored with DeHorn setting career-highs with 151 yards receiving and six receptions.
Hope finished with 410 yards of total offense. Quarterback Alex Thole completed 16 of 24 passes for 263 yards; he was intercepted once.

The Boston Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 on Thursday night.
It was Adley Rutschman's first game in Baltimore since the trade that made him a member of the Red Sox. He homered in his first at-bat and homered again in the sixth inning.
Earlier this year, while still with the Orioles, Rutschman had a two-home-run game against the Red Sox. That game was back in April, and the Orioles won 10-3. With his multi-homer game on Thursday, he became the first player in MLB history with a multi-homer game on both sides of the same matchup in the same season.
Rutschman has not had the best showing since the trade, but playing in Baltimore again, he put on a show. The Red Sox will hope he can get hot for the final stretch and the postseason.

Kris Boyd has delivered a brutal verdict on the £2.5m Rangers centre-back after a shaky display against Falkirk, arguing that his uncertainty spread through the Rangers defence during Wednesday's 2-1 Premiership win.
The Glasgow Times reported Boyd's comments, made during Sky Sports coverage, after Emmanuel Fernandez endured a difficult night despite his side taking all three points. Boyd focused on the opening half incident that led to Falkirk's equaliser. Fernandez followed an opponent too far, went down looking for a foul and left ******* e behind him. Ethan Ross then delivered the cross, with Kosta Nedeljkovic turning it into his own net.
Boyd saw little excuse for Fernandez's decision-making. He pointed to a loose square pass after the interval, when Jacob Murrell intercepted inside the penalty area before Ivor Pandur rescued Rangers with a save.
He said: "There's a tug, but I'd be more disappointed that my centre-back goes in and attempts to tackle like that.
"It summed up Emmanuel Fernandez's first half. He was really, really sloppy with the ball. You speak about good players making the people around them better — he's the opposite.

For one set, Missouri looked ready to make a statement.
The Tigers overwhelmed No. 25 Oregon with aggressive serving, efficient offense and a roaring Hearnes Center crowd, cruising to a 25-16 victory in the opening set Tuesday night.
Then Oregon adjusted.
The Ducks responded with three straight set victories, defeating Missouri 25-16, 25-20 and 25-19 to earn a 3-1 victory and hand the Tigers their first loss of the season.

Apple TV's recent docuseries on UConn women's basketball provided a trip down memory lane for Rebecca Lobo, documenting her journey from program-changing recruit to the leader of Geno Auriemma's first national championship squad.
Lobo's favorite moment from the three-episode series, however, captured a much more recent moment within the program. 10 days after a season-altering loss at Tennessee during the 2024-25 season, UConn bounced back resoundingly with an 87-58 win at South Carolina, prompting Auriemma to deliver a triumphant locker room speech that still resonates with Lobo.
"My favorite clip from the UConn doc. Look at the players' faces [and] how they respond to Coach's words," Lobo wrote on social media platform X. "Playing for [UConn] isn't easy, but there's great satisfaction when you accomplish challenging things together. His players care about each other [and] love him. You see that here."
The 6-foot-5 Lobo towered over her high school competition in western Massachusetts, where she emerged as one of the nation's top recruits and drew the attention of over 100 colleges around the country. Lobo ultimately stayed close to home and joined UConn, citing a focus on academics, becoming one of the first major recruits that Auriemma drew to Storrs.
Her blue-chip pedigree didn't deter Auriemma's hard-nosed coaching style, as Apple's docuseries showcased his push for Lobo to embrace a more physical brand of basketball. Auriemma's efforts ultimately paid off, as Lobo blossomed into the National Player of the Year and helped capture UConn's first national **** le with a memorable win over Tennessee in 1995.

Sabastian Sawe has been forced to pull out of another tilt at a sub-two-hour marathon with injury forcing his withdrawal from the Berlin Marathon.
The Kenyan had been due to defend his ***** le in Germany on 27 September in his return to action after smashing the marathon world record in London in April.
The 31-year-old had been tipped to perhaps run even faster than the 1:59:30 he recorded then, with Berlin noted as one of the fastest 26.2-mile courses on the circuit.
But an unspecified issue has meant Sawe has been denied the chance to race.
"It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you I am forced to withdraw from the BMW Berlin Marathon due to an injury," Sawe said in a statement.

In an interview on OGC Nice's channels, Moise Bombito (26) has confirmed that he will undergo further surgery on the tibia injury that he suffered at the start of October.
Bombito suffered a broken tibia against AS Monaco at the start of October 2025 and did not return in time to feature again for Nice last season. However, he did make Canada's FIFA World Cup squad and even started in their Round of 16 defeat to Morocco in the competition. He returned to Nice but was not included in the matchday squad to face FC Lorient on the opening matchday of the Ligue 1 season.
That absence could be explained by recurrent pain in his injured tibia. Speaking to Nice's official channels, Bombito said that, at the World Cup, it was "his body fighting against his heart". It was his heart that won, as Bombito did play at his home World Cup, albeit not fully fit, he confirmed. But he is now set for an extended period on the sidelines, after it was confirmed, following tests on Tuesday, that he would undergo another round of surgery on the tibia injury. Nice-Matin understands that he will be out for several months.

The Baltimore Ravens released their final unofficial depth chart of the preseason ahead of Friday night's matchup against the Washington Commanders. The chart provides another look at Baltimore's roster hierarchy before the team concludes the preseason and reduces its roster to 53 players by 6 p.m. Sunday. It also confirms that at least two starting competitions remain unresolved.
Unofficial depth charts are compiled by the communications department and should not be treated as final roster decisions. They can, however, reveal how players are grouped and which competitions remain open.
Here are seven takeaways from Baltimore's latest depth chart.
Jovaughn Gwyn and Ethan Pocic share the starting center position with an "or" designation. The competition became more significant after Danny Pinter suffered a torn patellar tendon during a joint practice with Minnesota. Pinter remains listed fourth on the depth chart but is expected to miss the season. Gwyn's athleticism and familiarity with offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford have helped him earn first-team work. Pocic offers considerably more NFL experience and has returned to game action after recovering from an Achilles injury.
Wednesday's joint practice and the preseason finale provide the final major evaluation opportunities. Baltimore needs the winner to develop communication and timing with Lamar Jackson before Week 1.

Jed York's weekend arrest wasn't the first time San Francisco 49ers ownership has found itself on the wrong side of the law – though, ironically, those past legal missteps are largely why York finds himself in such a prominent position now.
York, 46, who pleaded no contest Monday, Aug. 24, to two misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools in Columbiana County, Ohio, after a charge of "engaging in prostitution" was reduced, was, until recently, the NFL's youngest principal owner. That track largely became available to him starting in 2000, when his uncle, Pro Football Hall of Famer Eddie DeBartolo Jr., relinquished control of the team to his sister Denise DeBartolo York (Jed York's mother) and brother-in-law John York (Jed York's father).
Prior to that, DeBartolo was widely perceived as an owner whom stars throughout the league wanted to play for given his demand for championship football – the 49ers won five Super Bowls between the 1981 and 1994 seasons, none since – but also his willingness to spare no expense while caring for the members of his roster. (The Niners would eventually be hit with nearly $1 million in fines and forfeited a fifth-round draft pick in 2001 plus a third-rounder in 2002 after the NFL found them guilty of circumventing the salary cap, which came into existence in 1994, during a 1999 investigation.)
But DeBartolo's legal issues away from football ultimately drove him from the league. He pleaded guilty to one felony charge of failing to report an alleged extortion attempt in 1998 amid his attempt to obtain a riverboat gambling license in Louisiana. Former state governor Edwin Edwards allegedly attempted to extract $400,000 from DeBartolo amid his bid for the license. The NFL fined DeBartolo $1 million and suspended him for the 1999 season due to his involvement with Edwards, who was imprisoned on racketeering charges in 2002.
As for DeBartolo, who entered the Hall of Fame in 2016 and remains close to his former players – he presented former Niners coach Bill Walsh plus team and NFL legends Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Fred Dean and Charles Haley as they went into Canton – he never returned to the team as its controlling owner following the suspension.

Yesterday's game should have been a blowout, but at least it was a win. A win is always a good thing. And it was nice to see pretty much everyone in the line get some hits, have good at bats.

We had a nice evening last night, 18 people. No one complained (to my face) about the steaks (who complains about a steak?). I think I hit the 'medium rare' point on all of them. It is weird to have the entire grill of the barbecue filled steaks, usually, I'm sure doing them for me and my family.

Elena Rybakina's latest attempt to replace Aryna Sabalenka as world number one came to an abrupt end as she retired injured from her Cincinnati Open quarter-final against Iga Swiatek.
The Kazakh second seed needed to reach the final to knock Sabalenka off the top of the rankings after the Belarusian suffered a surprise defeat by Sara Bejlek in the fourth round on Wednesday.
However, Rybakina managed just five games in her last-eight match against Poland's Swiatek before retiring with a left ankle injury.
Trailing 4-1, the Australian Open champion called for a medical timeout after pulling up at 40-40.
Following a consultation with the trainer, Rybakina played only one more point before quitting.

Edgewood Coach Olajuwon Cooper and Saint John Coach Bob Dlwgosh say the size of school doesn't matter much either.
For the first time since 2018, the Heralds and Warriors will meet on the gridiron as the 2027 high football season opens up Friday night at Corlew Stadium.
Edgewood is a Division IV program, while Saint John is D-VII, but that doesn't seem to mean much to either side.
"We're just really excited about a county matchup and an old City-Series matchup," Dlwgosh said. "Yeah, they're a bigger school and they're a good football team, they're a playoff team in Division IV last year. That just reminds us we have to work really really hard and we've been preparing for this for a while and we're just doing everything we can do to make a run at it."

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Boosting their cornerback depth was paramount for the Green Bay Packers as they sought roster upgrades after capping a five-game skid to end their 2025 season with a wild-card playoff collapse.
The impact of their moves is evident from the fact that Keisean Nixon, the Packers' top cornerback a year ago, finds himself in a competition to keep his starting spot. Nixon occasionally has worked with the second-team defense in training camp following the Packers' offseason additions of rookie second-round draft pick Brandon Cisse and veteran free agent Benjamin St-Juste.
"I guess I'm being punished right now, I guess, I don't know," Nixon said. "I don't really worry about what I'm running in camp, ones or twos, I just keep my process and just compete — for real."
Nixon, a two-time All-Pro kick returner, earned his first Pro Bowl selection on defense last year as an injury replacement. He is the only cornerback in the NFL to have at least 70 tackles, six passes defensed and an interception in each of the last three seasons.
But that doesn't mean he has anything locked up this year.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Recent Kickapoo graduate Vincent Mhire might have been known locally for his skills on the basketball court, but he is even better known in sports media.
Just a few years after picking up a professional camera for the first time, he now boasts over 40 thousand followers on Instagram (vinnyflics) and creates hype videos for nearly every high school in the Springfield area. It all started with an injury called mallet finger.
"So I was going to be out for the next three months. And in that time, especially during the summer, there's these things called AIU tournaments. They're basketball, like summer leagues for high school players and stuff like that," Mhire said. "All my friends were in those and I couldn't play. So, I decided to go and like, just go with them to those tournaments. And I don't know what caused me to do this, but I started filming videos on my phone."
Mhire as he works a golf tournament in the United Kingdom in May of this year.
After realizing he had a true passion and some skill for videography, he leaned into building his brand. All while continuing to keep up his grades and play basketball, something that he feels gives him extra insight.

Perhaps never before has the Utah Open had such a Utah-centric leaderboard as it does after two rounds of the annual golf tournament, celebrating its 100th year this year at Riverside Country Club.
The top 11 golfers after 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament, sponsored by Larry H. Miller Company, are all Utah born-and-bred and each of the golfers is in his 20s with most having experience playing at one of the state's colleges.
Blake Tomlinson, a 27-year-old former University of Utah golfer, who won 2022 Utah Open, fired a 10-under-par 62 Saturday to take a two-stroke lead into Sunday's final round with a 16-under 128 total.
Two former BYU golfers, Carson Lundell and Simon Kwon, are tied at 130 with former Utah Tech golfer Jackson Rhees, while two more ex-Cougars, Rhett Rasmussen and Tyson Shelley, are tied for fifth, another stroke back at 131. Tied for seventh are ex-Ute Braxton Watts, former BYU golfer Keanu Akina and current BYU golfer Jackson Mauss, while another amateur, Parker Bunn, who plays for the Cougars, and Salt Lake's John Fox are tied for 10th at 133.
Tomlinson started off with two birdies and added three more to make the turn at 31. Then, on the back nine, he made five more birdies for another 31, just missing the Utah Open record of 61.

As if it wasn't complicated enough, extending Joey Porter Jr. just became an even more challenging task for the Pittsburgh Steelers, all thanks to Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon.
On Saturday, the NFL saw the cornerback market explode once again, as the Seahawks signed Witherspoon to a record-setting four-year, $132 million contract extension. His deal includes $101 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $33 million, making him the highest-paid cornerback in league history.
Before Witherspoon's extension, Porter was a favorite to reset the cornerback market. Even if Porter doesn't eclipse the $33 million mark, he won't be far off that number. And that's bad news for the Steelers, who have been handing out huge extensions left and right to members of their 2023 NFL Draft class.
Porter, who was selected by the Steelers with the 32nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has steadily emerged as one of the league's premier lockdown cornerbacks. Yes, the lack of interceptions, one of Porter's biggest red flags, is slightly concerning. But it hardly matters when he's completely removing an opposing team's top receiver.

Fall camp is underway for all 138 FBS institutions. And while the start of fall camp is generally viewed as a positive among college football fans, there is one harsh reality that comes with it — injuries.
Notable injuries have been already reported from the camps of both 2025 American Conference Championship Game participants:
RB Jamauri McClure — foot
Tulane running back Jamauri McClure missed practice on Tuesday, Aug. 11 due to an injured left foot, per Guerry Smith of The Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate. Smith reported McClure watched practice from a scooter and could return early in the season per head coach Will Hall, although the running back's status for the Sept. 5 opener at Duke may be in jeopardy.
McClure ranked first in rushing yards among the running backs on Tulane's 2025 American Conference champion roster, despite making only three starts. As a redshirt freshman, he posted 540 rushing yards and two touchdowns on a 6.5 average. Nearly all of McClure's production occurred after the calendar flipped to November. He eclipsed the century mark twice, posting 122 on Temple in Week 13 and 121 in the conference ***** le game vs. North Texas. The Seattle Seahawks have lost a few key players in their secondary this offseason, with Coby Bryant departing for the Chicago Bears and Riq Woolen joining the Philadelphia Eagles.
Both of those players are big losses, and to replace them, the Seahawks might be relying heavily on second-year standout defensive back Nick Emmanwori.
However, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler shared some bad news on Emmanwori, revealing that the fan favorite DB might not actually be good to go by Week 1 of the NFL regular season.
"The Seahawks say safety/big nickel Nick Emmanwori has a chance to return in Week 1 from offseason ankle surgery, but that's not a certainty at this point," Fowler writes.
