America's newest college graduates were sold the college premium. Four in 10 of them are working jobs that never needed the diploma.
About 42% of recent college graduates, ages 22 to 27, were underemployed in June, working jobs that typically don't require a bachelor's degree, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York's tracker of the labor market for recent college graduates. That's up from 41.8% in May but down from 42.4% in November 2025 and below the pandemic-era high of 43.4% in October 2020.
Unemployment is the other half of the problem. Recent grads' jobless rate hit 5.7% in June, well above the 4.1% rate for all workers. That's a reversal. From 1990, when the Fed's data begins, through 2018, recent grads were more likely to be unemployed than the average worker in just eight months. They have been more likely every month since January 2021. The gap hit a record 1.8 percentage points in April 2025 and is still near it.
Some degrees fare much worse than others. Using 2024 Census data, the Fed's breakdown by college major found criminal justice had the most underemployment, at 65.8%, followed by performing arts at 63.9% and fine arts at 58.9%.
On unemployment, computer engineering was second-worst of any major at 7.8%, and computer science fourth at 7%. Education majors fared best: special education had a 0.7% jobless rate and elementary education 1.2%. Nursing was 2.1%.

The Vanguard Bond Market ETF (NASDAQ:BND) is the largest bond ETF with nearly $162.3 billion in ***** ets. If you invested $10,000 into BND today, it could grow into over $18,000 in 20 years, given its historical 3% annualized return since inception (assuming you reinvest your interest payments). That's likely a lot less than you'd earn if you invested the same amount in an S&P 500 index fund. However, bonds are income generators and portfolio stabilizers, not wealth-building tools.
Here's a look at why you might still want to consider investing in this top bond ETF, despite its low historical returns.

McDonald's (MCD) stock fell 14.2% over the past 12 months, versus roughly 14.3% for the S&P 500, and now sits near its 52-week low. Over roughly the same stretch, management changed how it explains weak traffic. It used to point at customers outside its control. It now points at its own restaurants, and that makes the stock a different bet.
Who Did McDonald's Say Was Pulling Back?
About a year ago, on the second-quarter 2025 call, the lead worry sat outside the company. The CEO put it this way: "Visits across the industry by low-income consumers once again declined by double digits." The value message of that period leaned on core menu pricing, which management said shapes how customers judge value most.
So What Does McDonald's Say Went Wrong Instead?
In the latest call, for the second quarter of 2026, low-income consumers did not come up by name. The backdrop still comes up: industry traffic in several of its largest markets stayed flat to negative. The lead, though, is a miss of its own making. U.S. comparable sales grew 0.8%, and the CEO said the company did not execute at the level it needed.

The Nasdaq 100 has rallied slightly to show signs of life as we head toward that crucial Federal Reserve interest rate decision later today. A hike of 25 basis points is expected. This is perhaps the market coming to terms with the new reality as we hold the consolidation.
The question will be whether or not Kevin Warsh sounds extraordinarily hawkish during this press conference, or if it is a situation where it is one and done. I think that probably comes into play here as well. Rates are backing off the 5% level in the 10-year at the moment, at least, but it is worth noting that the market has been extraordinarily resilient.
The Dow Jones 30 is rising a bit in the early part of the session as well. It is in the oversold part of the stochastic oscillator. It is kind of a messy look for the stochastic oscillator at the moment, but it is worth noting that the area right around 52,250 has been important and so far seems to be holding up. The 50-day EMA near the 52,700 level offers pretty significant resistance, so it could be worth watching.
The S&P 500 continues to hang around the 7,600 level. That is an area that had previously been significant resistance and now is offering a significant amount of support over the last 4 or 5 trading sessions. We also have the 50-day EMA there as well. So, a bounce from here and a recovery just means more consolidation.
It will be interesting to watch how this plays out during that press conference. It could be a volatile and ******* py session, but ultimately, the stock market has been rather resilient. The earnings calendar treated us fairly well, and the resiliency of the U.S. economy continues.

Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C)'s CFO Gonzalo Luchetti said the bank expects return on tangible common equity (RoTCE) to come in slightly above 11% in 2026, while also indicating that Citi will increase stock buybacks from the $13 billion repurchased in 2025. The bank plans to accelerate roughly $500 million of investment by year-end, including spending on severance and marketing intended to expand its credit-card and wealth-management businesses. Citi also expects to remove Banamex from its balance sheet in 2027, which will create an estimated $9 billion currency-translation adjustment loss.
The 11%+ target is meaningful because Citi's profitability has already improved materially. In the second quarter, Citi generated $24.8 billion of revenue, up 14% year over year, while net income rose 45% to $5.8 billion. Investment-banking revenue increased 44% to $1.55 billion, and net interest income increased 13%. Citi's SEC filing shows second-quarter RoTCE of 13.0%, versus 8.7% a year earlier, while the first half of 2026 produced a 13.1% RoTCE. The new guidance therefore suggests management believes profitability can remain above the longer-term 11%-13% RoTCE range Citi established for 2027-28, despite additional investment spending.
Kiev.Victor / Shutterstock.com
The bullish argument is that Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) appears to be converting its multiyear restructuring into higher returns while simultaneously returning more capital to shareholders. The move from 8.7% RoTCE in the second quarter of 2025 to 13.0% in the second quarter of 2026 represents a substantial improvement in capital efficiency. Citi's efficiency ratio also improved to 57.4% from 62.7%, indicating that revenue growth is increasingly translating into operating leverage rather than being absorbed by expenses. That is particularly relevant because management now intends to spend another roughly $500 million on severance, marketing, and growth initiatives; if these investments produce the intended expansion in cards and wealth management, they could support revenue growth without derailing the profitability trajectory.
Capital returns provide another positive lever. Citi repurchased $13 billion of stock in 2025 and now expects to increase that amount, while its June 2026 CET1 ratio remained 12.78%, comfortably above its 11.6% standardized regulatory requirement. Buybacks can reduce tangible common equity and shares outstanding, potentially supporting both RoTCE and per-share earnings when executed below intrinsic value. Citi's tangible book value per share had already risen 7% year over year to $100.89 by June 30, 2026. The combination of higher operating profitability, shrinking share count, and improving capital efficiency strengthens the case for a valuation re-rating if Citi can sustain returns above 11%.

Long-running speculation over the future of Hain Celestial's business in Europe has finally come to a head with the disposal to a private-equity investor.
Nasdaq-listed Hain Celestial said in a statement today (14 September) it has agreed the sale of its "international" operations to Aurelius for $323m in cash.
The divestment follows a review of Hain Celestial's portfolio instigated by president and CEO Alison Lewis last year, which already resulted in the sale of its North American snacks business in 2026 to Canada's Snackruptors for $115m in cash.
That disposal included the brands Garden Veggie Snacks, Terra chips and Garden of Eatin'.
Ella's Kitchen baby and kids foods, the Joya and Natumi plant-based beverage lines and Hartley's jelly are joining Aurelius.

Harbor Funds, an investment management company, released its Q2 2026 investor letter for "Harbor Mid Cap Value Fund". The letter can be downloaded here. Global equities experienced a sharp rally in Q2 2026, with the S&P 500 returning 15.2%, its strongest quarter since 2020, driven by a shift from software to hardware in the Artificial Intelligence capital spending cycle. Small caps outperformed large caps, with the Russell 2000® gaining 21.5% compared to the Russell 1000's 15.1%. Growth stocks led within large caps, while Information Technology rose about 33%, contributing significantly to the S&P 500's return. The Harbor Mid Cap Value Fund returned 13.99%, outperforming its benchmark, the Russell Midcap Value Index. Strong stock selection in Consumer Discretionary, Real Estate, and Financials contributed positively, although an underweight in Information Technology negatively impacted results. Despite ongoing economic uncertainties, the investment philosophy remains committed to a disciplined value approach. Check the fund's top five holdings for its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Harbor Mid Cap Value Fund highlighted Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:REGN) as a newly added position. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:REGN) is a biotechnology company that develops and commercializes medicines to treat various diseases. On September 04, 2026, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:REGN) closed at $827.72 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $85.21 billion. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:REGN) posted a one‑month return of 2.43%, while its shares gained 48.22% over the past 52 weeks.
Harbor Mid Cap Value Fund stated the following regarding Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:REGN) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"We added to our position in Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:REGN), a biotech company in the Health Care sector. The stock ranks high on multiple cash flow and forecasted earnings measures — two of our most important measures of valuation. While the company pays a below-average dividend, Regeneron has been buying back stock, which we view positively. Price momentum over the past 12 months has been strong. In addition, several indicators of operating momentum also are attractive with improving operating margins and growth in sales. Overall, the stock ranks in the top 10% in our stock-ranking universe, which led to the second quarter purchase."
Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:REGN) is not on our list of the 40 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds. According to our database, 63 hedge fund portfolios held Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:REGN) at the end of the second quarter, down from 72 in the previous quarter. While we acknowledge the potential of Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:REGN) as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. If you're looking for an extremely undervalue

Walt Disney was a visionary who created a company that is arguably the leader in the entertainment field today. But he had to take a lot of risks, and that didn't always sit well with his wife Lillian.
Walt wasn't just an evangelist for his big ideas, he was a backer. In 1934, when he set out to make Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, costs ran up to $250,000. While there were investors, the company still had trouble meeting the amount required to create the film, so Walt sold his car, mortgaged his house and borrowed against his life insurance to complete the film (which Hollywood reporters were calling "Disney's folly" before its release).

BP has appointed Ian Tyler as chair of the company, effective immediately, according to a Wednesday announcement.
Tyler joined BP's board as a non-executive director in April 2025 and was appointed interim chair in May after the oil giant ousted its former Chair and Director Albert Manifold over concerns related to his oversight and conduct.
BP named Tyler the permanent replacement to Manifold after conducting an extensive search process that included both internal and external candidates, the company said.
"Ian brings significant experience providing challenge and support to executive teams, while maintaining strong governance and oversight on behalf of shareholders," Amanda Blanc, BP's senior independent director, said in the announcement. "These qualities have been evident during his time as Interim Chair, where he has secured the confidence of the board and executive management through his considered leadership, judgement and integrity."

Digital infrastructure company Equinix Inc. (NASDAQ:EQIX) and AI chipmaker NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) have expanded their partnership today to target the next major phase of artificial intelligence spending: inference.
Shares of Equinix rose 2% on Wednesday following the announcement of Equinix Inference Exchange, which is a distributed AI inference program for global enterprises, together with a new collaboration with Together AI.
The distributed AI inference platform can leverage Nvidia's Enterprise Reference Architectures, Together AI's inference platform, and Equinix's global data center and networking infrastructure to enable enterprises to achieve a faster path from AI experimentation to production. The collaboration will provide connectivity to clouds, networks and AI providers through Equinix Fabric.
The market's modest response is worth looking at.
Nvidia's expanded collaboration with Equinix allows it to push its computing architecture deeper into corporate AI infrastructure. Inference Exchange can make Nvidia-based infrastructure easier to deploy alongside its existing cloud and data environments.

Ignore bond yield creep at your own peril!
September historically is one of the worst months for the markets. In fact, September has, on average, seen slightly negative returns for the S&P 500 (^GSPC) dating back to 2006, per data from the Carson Group.
One day into September 2026, and we are being reminded that a slight negative return — or something far worse — could happen yet again. This time, it's happening at the hands of convulsing bond markets.
A worldwide government bond sell-off intensified today with a ferocity that should alarm every investor, big and small. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note (^TNX) — the single most important interest rate in the world, the rate that sets the price of everything from a mortgage to a car loan to a credit card — just hit its highest level since January 2025.

United Parcel Service announced Monday afternoon the adoption of a new operating model and leadership structure aimed at better exploiting its global network to accelerate profit growth as it evolves from a traditional small package carrier to more of an integrated logistics provider.
The timing of the move coincides with the major phase-out of low-margin Amazon business and downsizing of its domestic parcel network, which were largely completed by the end of June.
Under the new approach, UPS (NYSE: UPS) will standardize processes and procedures across geographies while maintaining the flexibility to meet the unique needs of local markets. UPS said it wanted to give customers greater consistency, agility, and scale as the company deemphasizes its traditional status as a small package carrier to focus more on being an integrated logistics provider.
As e-commerce growth normalized following the Covid-fueled boom and low-cost delivery competitors entered the market, UPS parcel volumes have stagnated.
Why It Matters: The company has stressed for two years that it intends to deemphasize last-mile delivery of e-commerce packages and focus more on high-value, premium market segments like healthcare, industrial, and automotive logistics, as well as services for small-and-medium size businesses. Now there is more concrete evidence about the direction UPS is going.

Riverwater Partners, an investment management company, released its 'Small Cap Strategy' Q2 2026 investor letter. The letter can be downloaded here. The Small Cap Strategy underperformed the Russell 2000 in the second quarter as the benchmark experienced one of its strongest risk-on rallies in recent memory, although the strategy remained ahead year-to-date. The quarter was defined by accelerating AI investment, energy market disruptions, and renewed investor appetite for higher-beta stocks, creating headwinds for the firm's quality-focused approach and healthcare positioning. Despite this, stock selection contributed positively in energy, materials, and financials, while healthcare and consumer discretionary detracted due to the fund's disciplined avoidance of speculative businesses. Looking ahead, the firm remains cautiously optimistic, focusing on opportunities created by market dislocations, including AI infrastructure enablers, select consumer companies, healthcare innovators, and energy businesses trading below intrinsic value. The strategy continues to emphasize high-quality companies with strong management teams and attractive valuations, positioning the portfolio for a potential rotation away from speculative market leadership. In addition, please check the Strategy's top five holdings to know its best picks in 2026.
In its second-quarter 2026 investor letter, Riverwater Partners Small Cap Strategy highlighted PDF Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:PDFS). PDF Solutions, Inc. During May, long-time strategic holder Advantest exited its entire 8% stake through an upsized secondary offering, with PDF selling additional shares alongside to fund general corporate purposes and potential debt reduction. We interpreted the heavily oversubscribed deal as a sign of management taking control of its own destiny, and we used the offering-related weakness to add a full percentage point to the position, funded by a sale of Veeco (VECO) to keep our overall semiconductor exposure in check. Late in the quarter we trimmed a portion of the position after the sharp run, consistent with our practice of harvesting gains in extended semiconductor names..." (Click here to read the full text)

Jim Cramer warned on August 24 that mounting political and community backlash against data center power consumption could directly impact equipment suppliers like GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE:GEV). He noted:
What happens if the hyperscalers get their act together and offer a code of conduct instead of being out there all by themselves cutting deals that are now regretted? Stranger things have happened than a code of conduct. It must happen if this issue is going to be tempered… I can't believe they haven't figured that out. That's why you have to look at certain companies that were thriving because of data centers, companies like the biggest turbine company that turns natural gas into power. That's GE Vernova. Now, we own it for the Charitable Trust and I now feel that the market won't pay up for its order book because maybe it's gotten soft. I don't want to get rid of it but I don't want to take a beating either.
GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE:GEV) is fundamentally reshaping the grid for the AI era, and its second-quarter 2026 results validate that dominance. Revenue climbed 22% year-over-year to $11.1 billion, but the real story was the order book. Total Q2 orders surged 88% organically to a record $24.2 billion, as data centers scramble for heavy-duty and aeroderivative gas turbines. The runaway demand pushed the company's total backlog to a staggering $176 billion. Management is highly confident in this trajectory, aggressively raising full-year free cash flow guidance to a massive range of $11.5 billion to $12.5 billion and cementing GE Vernova Inc. (NYSE:GEV) as a solid cash-generating AI infrastructure play.
Despite the top-line explosion, GE Vernova Inc.'s (NYSE:GEV) Q2 diluted EPS of $2.47 missed consensus estimates, while margin pressure persisted in parts of its business, particularly Wind, where organic orders fell 40%. More importantly, as Cramer admitted about his own stake in the Charitable Trust, he now feels the market might refuse to pay up for the company's massive order book if it starts to soften. With local governments imposing stricter regulations and higher compensation requirements on data centers, the pace of hyperscaler expansion is facing real bottlenecks. If developers are delayed by political pushback and grid limitations, the company's delivery timelines and following revenue recognition could stretch further out, which could test investor patience.

The Magnum Ice Cream Company has welcomed a US court decision narrowing a lawsuit brought by former Ben & Jerry's independent directors over the ice-cream brand's activism and changes to its governance.
Judge Kevin Castel of the federal court in Manhattan on Friday threw out most of the claims brought by former Ben & Jerry's independent directors, dismissing seven of the ten counts and trimming another.
He also held that Magnum, the Amsterdam-headquartered ice-cream business created from Unilever's spin-off last year, should stand as the main defendant in place of the FMCG conglomerate.
The case was filed by former Class I directors linked to Ben & Jerry's independent board.
It accused Unilever and Magnum of breaching commitments dating back to the UK-listed group's 2000 acquisition of the US ice-cream brand, under which Ben & Jerry's retained unusual protections around its board structure, social mission and foundation.

RGA Investment Advisors, an investment management company, has released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter. The letter can be downloaded here. The letter addresses the incorporation of AI into investment strategies and the dramatic changes in market dynamics that have emerged, specifically referencing the AI Bottleneck 40. This group of stocks is crucial to data center infrastructure. Initially, these stocks were closely aligned with the S&P, but by mid-2025, they began to diverge and outperform the index, exhibiting significant volatility, with realized volatility rates approaching 60%. The letter stresses the importance of continually monitoring these trends and adjusting the investment strategy. Also, check the fund's top five holdings to see its best picks in 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, RGA Investment Advisors highlighted GitLab Inc. (NASDAQ:GTLB). GitLab Inc. (NASDAQ:GTLB) develops a platform that supports the software development lifecycle, covering DevSecOps lifecycle stages. On August 24, 2026, GitLab Inc. (NASDAQ:GTLB) closed at $42.03 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $7.099 billion. GitLab Inc. (NASDAQ:GTLB) posted a one‑month return of 27.50%, while its shares lost 3.98% over the past 52 weeks.
RGA Investment Advisors stated the following regarding GitLab Inc. (NASDAQ:GTLB) in its Q2 2026 investor letter:
"We bought shares in GitLab Inc. (NASDAQ:GTLB). GitLab is a software company offering DevSecOps and git management for enterprises, serving as an essential "orchestrating" layer for companies to securely manage their codebase and IP. AI is unquestionably driving demand for GitLab's offerings, but there is concern around its traditional per seat pricing model versus a consumption-based model. If AI reduces the number of employees in technical roles at large enterprises, this presents a headwind to growth. This headwind has slowed top-line growth faster than GitLab's budding consumption-based models for AI agents have been able to replace the lost revenue. As it stands today, AI-based revenues are a small piece of the pie, but we expect substantial growth over time. At sub-4x EV/sales, around 20x EV/EBITDA and a free cash flow yield over 5%, we think the valuation is compelling for a business still growing its top line in the high teens and playing an increasingly important role in enterprise AI workflows."
GitLab Inc. (NASDAQ:GTLB) is not on our list of the 40 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds. As per our database, 50 hedge fund portfolios held GitLab Inc. (NASDAQ:GTLB) at the end of the second quarter, which was 43 in the previous quarter. While we acknowledge the potential of GitLab Inc. (NASDAQ:GTLB) as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. If you're looking for an extremely undervalued AI stock that also stands to benefit significantly from Trump-era tariffs and the onshoring trend, see our free report on the best short-term AI

Iren (NASDAQ: IREN), one of a clutch of cryptocurrency miners attempting to lean more heavily on data center operations, was a stock market winner on Thursday. The company reported news that indicated the strategy is a viable one, and investors rewarded the stock by pushing it almost 3% higher that trading session. This compared favorably to the S&P 500 index's 0.7% gain.
That morning, Iren announced that it had delivered a chunk of artificial intelligence (AI) compute to Microsoft. Horizon 1, a 50-megawatt deployment at Iren's campus in Childress, Texas, is the first stage of a five-year cloud services contract between the two companies worth $9.7 billion. Iren added that Nvidia had bestowed its Exemplar Cloud status on the deployed system architecture, the Nvidia GB300 NVL72. This matters because it certifies the quality of the deployment by the company that manufactured the hardware.
Investors were also cheered by Iren maintaining its goal of reaching 480 megawatts of gross AI cloud capacity in 2026, and 1.2 gigawatts next year.

Apple (AAPL) has raced to the top of the "Magnificent Seven" leaderboard this year, notching three straight record closes. That leaves shareholders weighing how much upside remains against the risk that earnings knock the stock off its highs.
Investors who own Apple and expect a quieter move from here can consider a covered call, which generates income up front in exchange for giving up some gains if the rally keeps running.
A covered call combines 100 shares with the sale of one call option. Because a standard option contract covers 100 shares, the investor needs at least that many shares for the call to be covered. The investor collects a premium but may have to sell the shares at the option's strike price.
Here's an example: An investor owns 100 Apple shares near $340 and then sells one Aug. 21 call with a $355 strike price.
That options contract would have recently paid about $4.35 per share, or $435 total. That $435 immediately belongs to the investor. The catch arrives if Apple keeps climbing.
