Nashville SC is the first MLS club to clinch a spot in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup. The team has guaranteed a finish no worse than third in the league's overall standings, with matches still remaining on the 2026 schedule.
The math is simple: Nashville's position is now unreachable by any chasing club, even in a worst-case run to close out the season. That removes any dependency on other results and hands the front office an international fixture to plan around a year in advance.
Qualification doesn't end the ambition. Third place is the floor, not the ceiling, and Nashville still has reason to push for a higher finish before the playoffs begin. A stronger regular-season position carries weight heading into the postseason, where seeding and momentum matter.
The early clinch also gives the roster-building process a head start. Playing continental and domestic competitions at once demands depth — injuries, suspensions and fatigue all hit harder across a packed calendar — so locking in the Champions Cup spot now lets the front office plan accordingly instead of waiting on the regular season's final weeks.
The Concacaf Champions Cup is the region's top club competition, pitting MLS sides against teams from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. For Nashville, it's a chance to test the squad against different styles and raise its profile beyond the domestic league — part of a broader push by MLS clubs to build credibility on the continental stage.

Toluca did it again.
Alexis Vega scored in the fourth minute with Helinho adding an insurance goal in the 70th minute as the Diablos Rojos beat Monterrey 2-0 Sunday, Sept. 6 in Houston to win the 2026 Leagues Cup final.
In addition to winning the two-bowled trophy awarded to the winner of the tournament that pits Liga MX clubs against their MLS counterparts, Toluca also secures a bye to the round of 16 of the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup. Monterrey and León, which beat Club América earlier Sunday in the third-place game, also qualify to the CCC through the Leagues Cup.
Vega took advantage of lax play from Monterrey to give Toluca an early lead. After a Toluca scoring chance seemed to go wanting when it bounced off the post, Monterrey midfielder Orbelin Pineda had the ball at his feet in the box. He was too slow to clear it, however, and Vega picked his pocket. The Toluca attacker finished off the opening goal with his first touch of the ball, much to the frustration of the pro-Rayados crowd in south Texas.
It was a frenetic start to the match, with a pair of Monterrey scoring chances sandwiched around Vega's opener. Rayados forward Hugo Cuypers put a header just off target in the third minute, and in the sixth minute, Toluca goalkeeper Hugo Gonzalez was able to stop a shot on target from Lucas Ocampos.

A Diber Cambindo header made all the difference for Club León.
The forward nodded in a set piece in the 80th minute of the Leagues Cup third-place game against Club América. It was the only goal of a 1-0 León victory over Las Aguilas and a critical one for León.
The victory booked the team a place in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup.
América already had a place in next year's Concacaf Champions Cup, and had the Mexico City side won the match, Club Tijuana would have taken the remaining place as the Mexican club with the best combined finish between the Apertura and Cluausura short tournaments.
Instead, León will return to the continental club championship for the first time since winning the competition in 2023. That achievement typically comes with a ticket to the FIFA Club World Cup, but La Fiera were denied entry to the 2025 tournament because they share ownership with Pachuca, which also qualified, and ownership preferred for Tuzos to take part.

The 2027 Women's World Cup is less than 11 months away as 32 teams will gather in Brazil for the tournament. For the United States women's national team, it's a chance to try and get back to being world champions after their ******* le was ******* ed in 2023 after holding it for eight years.
Now that the Women's World Cup match schedule has been released, all attention is starting to shift towards qualification. But, what does the USWNT need to do to qualify for the Women's World Cup?
We take a look at the road to the 2027 Women's World Cup and what awaits the USWNT this fall.
The October international window is the final round of friendlies before the qualification tournament. The USWNT, ranked second in the FIFA world rankings, plays a pair of friendlies against Spain, the top ranked team and defending Women's World Cup champions. It's not only a huge pair of matches between the top two ranked teams in the world, but also a barometer test.
Then, the November-December international window is when the 2026 Concacaf W Championship will take place in Texas. Austin FC's Leagues Cup 2026 run came to an end following a 2-0 quarterfinal loss to LIGA MX powerhouse Toluca FC at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Wednesday night.
Toluca advance to face Club León in the semifinals next week thanks to Helinho's 53rd-minute penalty kick after Oleksandr Svatok fouled Jesús Ángulo in the box. It was only the second goal Austin conceded in Leagues Cup 2026.
The Verde & Black were dealt a setback in the 40th minute after Joseph Rosales was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Federico Pereira.
Brad Stuver did his best to keep Austin FC in the match, making several key saves in a one-goal game against the current Concacaf Champions Cup ****** le-holders.

Gianni Infantino has defied a request by one of his FIFA vice presidents to stay away from an Under-14 football event in the Caribbean and instead made a rare public appearance during the global furore over his failed plan to sell future World Cup profits to private investors.
The FIFA president posted photos on his Instagram account on Saturday, showing his meeting with political and football officials from the Dominican Republic on the sidelines of a Caribbean Football Union (CFU) youth tournament in the Punta Cana resort.

UEFA is ramping up the pressure on FIFA president Gianni Infantino by holding talks over an expanded Nations League which would involve non-European teams.
The Press **** ociation understands, as per an initial report in The Guardian, that European football's governing body is in discussions with CONCACAF, the confederation which represents the nations of North and Central America plus the Caribbean.
The talks could lead to an expansion of the Nations League as early as the 2028-29 edition, sources have indicated.
The discussions are a further indication of UEFA and CONCACAF working together on pan-continental competitions to the exclusion of FIFA, with their presidents, Aleksander Čeferin and Victor Montagliani, both understood to be of the view that FIFA president Gianni Infantino should resign and leave his position with dignity, rather than challenge for re-election amid the controversy surrounding his failed plan to involve private investors in the running of the World Cup and other FIFA events.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is also believed to be involved in the Nations League talks, but with a view to joining at a later point.

GENEVA (AP) — A collection of soccer fan groups from around the world launched a petition Thursday calling for Gianni Infantino to resign as FIFA president after he tried to sell future World Cup profits to private investors.
The petition with the hashtag InfantinOut also calls for "FIFA to be rebuilt so that the current debacle can never happen again."
"The shameful attempt by one individual — the FIFA President himself — to sell off the World Cup to private investors exposed a betrayal football will never forget," the petition said about Infantino's plan for a commercial spinoff, which he dropped amid a furious backlash.
The fan groups include Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa and, in North America, the Independent Supporters Council, plus about 40 national fan groups worldwide.
Infantino has resisted calls to leave office despite European soccer body UEFA saying it has no confidence in him. He has also been criticized by the leadership of North America's CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation.

Santiago Sandoval could not have asked for a better return to Chivas' first-team setup. After an impressive run with the Mexico U-20 National Team at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship, the Rojiblanco academy product returned to the squad with the same confidence, talent and ability to make a difference that have made him one of Guadalajara's most promising young players.
Most importantly, his return has gone beyond simply making a good impression. In his last 2 appearances, Sandoval has directly contributed to Chivas' victories, proving that he is a player capable of changing the course of a match even when coming off the bench.
His return came in the final match of the Leagues Cup against Seattle Sounders. He came on as a substitute and, with only a few minutes on the pitch, found himself inside the box to connect with a header and score the goal that ultimately proved decisive in Chivas' victory.
But if that performance was the first glimpse of his impact after returning from the U-20 Championship, what happened against Santos Laguna confirmed that it was no coincidence. In Matchweek 4 of the Apertura 2026, Sandoval came on in the 53rd minute and once again needed very little time to become a key figure. He was active throughout his time on the pitch and created dangerous situations, eventually winning the penalty that led to the goal with which Guadalajara defeated Los Guerreros 0-1.
2 matches, 2 wins and 2 different ways of making an impact. Against Seattle, with a goal. Against Santos, through his movement, his reading of the game and an individual play that ultimately led to the decisive penalty.

For the second time this season, FC Cincinnati lost a tough heartbreaking game at a crucial point in a major tournament to a Mexican side.
Cincinnati lost 2-1 to Atlas FC in their third group-stage game in the Leagues Cup Aug. 11 at TQL Stadium. Cincy conceded two goals from the 79th minute on to squander a big chance to advance in the tournament.
Cincinnati finished 2-1 in the group stage with six points. Pending the results of other group-stage games Aug. 12 and 13, Cincinnati will likely be eliminated from the tournament.
It was a similar finish to the club's loss in the Concacaf Champions Cup to Tigres in the round of 16. Cincinnati lost a 3-0 lead in the aggregate series and was eliminated when Tigres scored at the death in March and won the game, 5-1.
"Yeah, it's a tough one," said Cincinnati's Gerardo Valenzuela. "We definitely had the motivation and the confidence to go and win this tournament and we were playing so well in these few games."

Most teams still have everything to play for in the 2026 Leagues Cup, with the final matchday kicking off.
The top four teams in the table from each league after playing three matches against teams from the opposite league move into the quarterfinals. The top three finishers in Leagues Cup book.a place in the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup.
Sixteen of 18 MLS teams are still alive for the top four spots in the MLS standings, which would secure a place in the quarterfinals and put teams two wins away from not only the final but a spot in next year's CCC.
Fewer Liga MX clubs have a shot at the knockout stage, but eight teams head into the final matchday of the group stage with a shot at advancing.
While 16 teams are still mathematically alive top make MLS' top four, the fact that six teams won their first two matches to earn six points means it's unlikely any team on three points will be able to jump the required number of teams and make up the goal difference, the second tiebreaker.

Portland Thorns and USWNT midfielder Olivia Moultrie suffered an ACL injury to her right knee in training last week and has been ruled out for the remainder of the NWSL season.
The 20-year-old Moultrie, who joined the Thorns in 2021 and has made 79 starts for the club, has been placed on the Season-Ending Injury (SEI) list. Through 16 games this season, she scored five goals and registered five ******* ists.
"Olivia is one of the most driven players I have been around, and she will use that drive during her recovery and rehabilitation," said Thorns president and general manager of soccer operations Jeff Agoos. "She has our full support and every resource this club can put behind her."
Internationally, Moultrie has represented the United States 18 times since getting her first call up in 2023. She has scored five times in three USWNT victories.
The injury will also keep Moultrie out of the Concacaf Women's Championship, which will begin in November in Texas. That tournament will act as the qualifying process for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil next summer and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Mexico is still on top at the U-20 level.
El Tri beat the United States, 2-0, in the final of the Concacaf U-20 Championship in the final at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Sunday, Aug. 9.
The final was mostly for pride, with both teams already qualified for the U-20 World Cup and each side already having their place in the 2028 Olympics secured thanks to the U.S. hosting that tournament and Mexico having defeated Canada in the semifinal to secure the other Concacaf place.
Mexico scored a pair of goals on set pieces to win the ***** le and defend the crown from the 2024 tournament when it beat the U.S. in León with a dramatic rally that saw a late goal and an extra-time win.
This edition was more straightforward, with Atlante center back Cristóbal Alfaro nodding in a pair of goals, the first on a set piece from the left wing and the second on a corner kick that U.S. goalkeeper Kayne Rizvanovich spilled and Alfaro was able to win and put into the net.

Mexico's men's soccer team will return to the Olympics in 2028, booking a place in the Los Angeles Games with a 2-1 victory over Canada in the semifinal of the Concacaf U-20 Championship on Friday, Aug. 7 in Mexico City.
Since the 2028 host nation, the United States, arrived in the final of the U-20 tournament earlier Friday with a 2-0 win over Costa Rica, the Mexico-Canada semifinal put a direct berth to the Olympics on the line.
Canada, managed by senior national team coach Jesse Marsch, started sensationally with CF Montreal prospect Owen Graham-Roache setting himself up for a volleyed shot from outside the box to give Canada the lead in the sixth minute.
But the hosts responded with a tremendous goal of their own just after the start of the second half, with defender Cristobal Alfaro sizing up a shot from the top of the area and sending home the equalizer just three minutes after coming on.
The game turned in the 67th minute, when Canada midfielder Liam Mackenzie saw his second yellow card of the match while trying to pull off a turn.

As such, FIFA President Infantino was relatively quick to act as his support collapsed from under him like quicksand less than a year out from another election. The plans were pulled and, following a crisis meeting on Wednesday, an apology was made public.

Arsene Wenger has sought to separate himself from Gianni Infantino as the World Cup investment controversy threatens to bring down the embattled FIFA President.
UEFA is actively working to engineer Infantino's removal from his role at the helm of world soccer's governing body. Infantino finds himself at the center of significant opposition following his announcement of contentious plans to sell ownership shares in competitions like the World Cup to external investors.
He was compelled to reverse course after UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation joined forces to oppose the confidential proposal. There is now a coordinated push to oust Infantino, who had been prepared to pursue a fourth presidential term, as per The Mirror.

The Leagues Cup — the 36-team tournament featuring select clubs from Major League Soccer and Mexico's Liga MX — is back and will kick off with six games on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
While previous incarnations of Leagues Cup would feature every club from MLS and Liga LX, a new format was introduced in 2025 that featured an even number of clubs representing each league (18). There's plenty at stake in the tournament, with the top three finishers qualifying for next year's Concacaf Champions Cup tournament.
The Seattle Sounders are the defending Leagues Cup champions, having won the 2025 tournament final over Inter Miami. The Columbus Crew won the 2024 Leagues Cup, while Inter Miami won the 2023 edition in Lionel Messi's first season with the team.
Here is everything you need to know to follow the 2026 Leagues Cup tournament:

Gianni Infantino's position as Fifa president is growing increasingly untenable with Wales and England set to withdraw their support in the Swiss-Italian after he scrapped his controversial plan to sell off stakes of the World Cup to private investors.
Uefa was among numerous footballing bodies to say it had lost confidence in Infantino after its 55 member ****** ociations insisted they would not participate in any Fifa tournament until plans for the Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) were withdrawn, confirming they would even have boycotted the next World Cup - which eventually forced Infantino's climbdown late on Friday evening.
Concacaf, the governing body for North America and the Caribbean, reiterated their own concerns over the lack of consultation and rejected the proposal, as did the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) who called for an "urgent review of its governance" at Fifa – piling more pressure on Infantino.
As once-loyal strongholds begin to turn on him less than a year out from the next Fifa presidential election in March 2027, could this be the end of Infantino?
Here are six candidates that could challenge Infantino for Fifa's presidency:

Revelations keep coming!
As the hours go by, more and more is being revealed about the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project, which has now been scrapped by FIFA.
According to revelations from The Times, Gianni Infantino could have earned an annual salary of $30 million, or around €26 million, if he had taken charge of FIFA's future commercial company.
As a reminder, FIFA published its financial report in June 2026, which showed that Gianni Infantino received $4.6 million during 2025. The FIFA president would therefore have benefited from a 525% salary increase if the FFE project had been approved.
A colossal sum that has reignited criticism surrounding a project that was ultimately abandoned under pressure from several major confederations, including UEFA, Concacaf, and the AFC.
