The Detroit Lions no longer have to wonder which running back would set the next NFL contract benchmark.
Bijan Robinson got there first.
The Atlanta Falcons reportedly agreed to a three-year, $66.75 million ($51 million guaranteed) extension with Robinson, with another $8.25 million available through incentives. The new money averages $22.25 million per season, while Robinson can earn as much as $25 million annually through the extension.
For Brad Holmes and the Lions, the Jahmyr Gibbs negotiation just became much clearer.
Robinson and Gibbs have been linked since the 2023 NFL Draft. Atlanta selected Robinson eighth overall, while Detroit took Gibbs four picks later.

Scott Harris strongly rejected the idea that the Detroit Tigers failed to generate enough competition before trading Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Speaking after the deadline, Detroit's president of baseball operations said the Tigers received multiple offers, pushed teams beyond their initial proposals and carefully weighed every available package.
According to Brad Galli, Harris called criticism that there was no bidding war "garbage."
"That's garbage," Harris said.
Harris added that the Tigers could hear "audible pain" from interested teams as they continued adding to their offers.

Kevin Dotson landed at No. 5 and Steve Avila checked in at No. 13 on Pro Football Focus' 2026 ranking of the NFL's top 32 guards, giving the Rams one of just a handful of teams with two players in the top 15.
Dotson's case starts in the run game. Since the start of the 2023 season, his 90.9 PFF run-blocking grade ranks third among all guards, trailing only Chicago's Chris Lindstrom and Denver's Quinn Meinerz. He backed that up in pass protection last season, too, posting a 66.8 grade while allowing 22 pressures and three sacks across 17 games.
Avila's climb has been steadier. The 2023 second-round pick posted a career-high 75.0 PFF grade last season, 11th among qualified guards, and set another career mark with a 72.3 run-blocking grade. He allowed just two sacks all season, including the playoffs.
The PFF ranking arrives as something of a rebuttal to how the duo was viewed elsewhere this offseason. Neither made the top 10 of ESPN's annual survey of coaches, executives and scouts, landing only among players "also receiving votes." That snub came despite Dotson finishing with an 86.4 overall PFF grade — third-best among 81 qualified guards — and the Rams' rushing offense dropping from 4.8 yards per carry with him on the field to 4.0 without him after a Week 16 ankle injury. Avila's 76.8 grade, meanwhile, ranked ninth among qualified guards.
Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame took a different view, naming Dotson and Avila the NFL's third-best guard tandem and pointing to the interior line as a driving reason the Rams enter the season as Super Bowl favorites.

The Chargers have another month before they trim their roster down to 53 players for the start of the regular season.
Until then, they still have three preseason games and a few more weeks of training camp to prove to the coaching staff they're worthy of a spot.
With the first week of practice behind us, I'm giving my latest projection of the 53-man roster. Keep in mind that it's difficult to make an accurate **** sment because the pads weren't on in Week 1.
For now, here's who I see making the squad next month.

At the All-Star Break's conclusion, I wrote on expectations, and their virtue as an exercise with this franchise towards a more hopeful future near and far. These Seattle Mariners, 3.0 games back of the AL West and the third Wild Card spot alike, have earned little and less belief. They've played poorly, wasted chances, and frittered opportunities to cleanse their palates. Much has rightly been made of the necessity for the core players to perform at or near the standards they've set for several years. But Seattle is giving up massive production on the fringes, and they've forced themselves into an uncomfortable, desperate position.
It is time for them to call up Michael Arroyo.
Seattle needs right-handed hitting, and with J.P. Crawford sidelined at least for several weeks, there is no easy solution at third base. Brendan Donovan returns on Tuesday to rotate around the field, but it's hard to look at the lineup as constructed and see anywhere for him to play more frequently than the hot corner. Arroyo has played some third base, but it's realistically not where he could be thrown in, although his defense is less egregious and more limited if asked to play second base or corner outfield. But they need his bat, because the Mariners need to take some risks, and rotating Weston Wilson, Victor Robles, Rob Refsnyder, Leo Rivas, and Mitch Garver through to take flaccid swing after flaccid swing is a Wile. E. Coyote kind of road that the Mariners have been slamming into the wall of all summer. The Rainiers' roster is stocked with similar players who've struggled to set themselves apart this year and over many years, from Connor Joe to Patrick Wisdom to Stuart Fairchild, along with injured options like Ryan Bliss and Brennen Davis. With Luke Raley seemingly ailing, the M's have to be more aggressive to rev up their offense before it's too late.

Arroyo is a 21 year old Colombian ~utilityman whose profile made him the most-heralded hitting prospect from his burgeoning baseball nation since Colombia's first and greatest star: SS Edgar Renteria. The 5'10, compact youngster has never been at the top of Seattle's prospect list, but has hit his way into top-100 status nationally over the past couple seasons, with an approach I first wrote about in the winter before the 2024 season. MK Dons have signed winger Sam Silvera on a free transfer after he was released by Middlesbrough at the end of last season.
The 25-year-old was a first-choice player under former Boro boss Rob Edwards at the beginning of the 2025-26 season but was unable to retain a regular place in the side after suffering a foot injury in February.
He is an Australian international, earning eight caps, but was not part of the Socceroos' 26-man World Cup squad this summer.
Silvera made 65 appearances for Middlesbrough across three seasons, scoring eight goals.
He becomes MK Dons' sixth signing of the summer transfer window as they prepare for life back in League One, their first season in the third tier since the 2022-23 campaign.

Troy Polamalu is revered in Pittsburgh Steelers lore as an instinctive football genius. But behind his Hall of Fame highlight reel was safety partner Ryan Clark, who routinely had to fix the backend coverages Polamalu abandoned when following his instincts.
Appearing on the "Not Just Football with Cam Heyward" podcast with Cam Heyward, Clark revealed what it was really like playing in tandem with Polamalu. Clark recalled a specific game against the Oakland Raiders where Polamalu decided to abandon his ******* igned quarter coverage to jump a short route.
"Troy comes up to me and goes, 'RC, we get that formation again. I'mma jump the hitch.' Whoa, Troy, that means that ******* ody's going to be on the seam, Troy. No one's covering the tight end on the go. He tells me, 'They'll never throw it.' So now I'm effed up. I'm playing the middle like a dummy. We get the formation? Exactly what he thought. They run the formation. He take off 43, to the hitch. Guess what they threw? The seam," Clark recounted.
Despite the occasional broken ******* ignment, Clark never voiced frustration to Polamalu or defensive coordinator ******* LeBeau. Clark recognized that restricting Polamalu's freedom would ultimately weaken the team.
"And I never complained to him cuz I never wanted him to feel, cuz he loved me so much, I never want him to feel that him doing and being who God made him to be took away from my ability to feed my family," Clark explained. "You can't tell somebody who can fly, right, to wear a weighted vest. It would have made us a worse team."

The Jacksonville Jaguars have made roster moves ahead of the start of training camp. The announced they've team signed cornerback Corey Ballentine and placed cornerback Dane Jackson on the reserve/retired list.
Ballentine was a sixth round draft pick in 2019, originally drafted by the New York Giants. He's played in 75 career games, recording 77 tackles, nine pass deflections, two forced fumbles and an interception.
He's also played a special teams role as a returner throughout his career, returning 37 kicks for 876 yards.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Three-time Pro Bowler Jamal Adams says he's joining the Minnesota Vikings on the eve of training camp.
Adams announced the move on social media Monday night, posting "Year 10" and the Vikings' "skol" hashtag.

Italy will appoint legendary midfielder Andrea Pirlo as the country's new manager, according to local reports.
Pirlo was a key part of Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning side and played for Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus in a gloried playing career. He also coached Juventus, as well as Sampdoria and Turkish side Fatih Karagumruk, before his current role in charge of Dubai United.

German football needs a fresh start — Jürgen Klopp made that clear right from the beginning. Every player will now get the chance to prove himself, the door is closed to no one, but the new national coach also made one very clear expectation known.
"I looked at 57 outfield players. We had a lot of good players at the World Cup who didn’t play particularly well. It’s far from bad, but it definitely needs improvement," Klopp said.
That is why he will also call up new names: "There will be players getting opportunities who aren’t even expecting it yet. Because I want to be brave. I always have been, and I always will be. I want to work with lads who play the kind of football everyone enjoys. That doesn’t always bring immediate success, but I want people to go home after the game and say: 'wow!'"
Everyone should make an effort to draw attention to themselves. At the same time, Klopp is also convinced that there is enough talent available to put together a good team: "I went through the names and came away with an extremely positive view of the squad. "Boxing is a brutal sport, but it's a disciplined sport," Owner, Hector Perez Jr said.
The Rosenberg nonprofit has provided young people with an affordable place to learn the sport while emphasizing discipline, respect, and perseverance.
The Fort Bend Boxing Club was founded in 1964 by Hector's uncle Blas Perez. Blas was a fighter himself, playing the sport from the age of 12, before turning to coaching and building amateur champions.
"My uncle was a brawler. He fought to the end - he never gave up," Hector shared. "That's how life is with him right now. He's had quite a bit of strokes already, he's still fighting."

"It is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful, arguably spiritual golf courses on planet Earth," said LPGA commissioner Craig Kessler, "and it's never been seen on TV before."
That will change March 11-14 when Golf Channel's "Live From" show at the Players Championship leads into primetime tournament coverage for the LPGA on the Big Island.
A field of 95 LPGA pros and 25 collegiate players will play alongside each other, from the same tees, in two competitions that will run concurrently, the tour has announced. The five teams will include Stanford, Arkansas, Texas A&M, the University of Texas and UCLA.
A women's college golf event has been held at Nanea, and hosted by Stanford, since 2013. What started as the Pac 12 Preview became the Nanea Invitational, with an impressive champions list that includes Alison Lee, Bronte Law, Andrea Lee, Rose Zhang and Megha Ganne.

When the offseason started, the Washington Wizards were quick to re-sign Trae Young to a contract extension. The deal was worth $212.8 million over four years. This did not get much fanfare from the NBA community because they thought it was an overpay.
Of course, Young's reputation within the NBA community took a hit at the tail end of his Atlanta Hawks tenure. However, it seems the Wizards do not care about that because they know what Young can do as the lead point guard of a team.
As an elite playmaker, it is easy to see why Young is seen as one of the top guards in the league. However, there are some negatives to his game, especially with the lack of impact on the defensive side of the ball.
The Wizards must find a way to hide those weaknesses because the offense is such a huge positive. The trade-off might not be worth it for some teams, but it seems the Wizards are ready to deal with Young's defensive deficiencies.

WORCESTER – With some of the world's greatest soccer players playing above them on the big screen, the next generation took the field at Worcester Common during the city's World Cup watch party Tuesday afternoon, July 14.
Well, it wasn't exactly a field as much as a makeshift training ground, complete with drill areas, practice stations and a tiny pitch, as Worcester Common was transformed into the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Festival. The festival has been traveling to watch parties across the state to offer free games and instruction to youth players as a way to tie into the excitement of the World Cup with development of the world's most popular sport in Massachusetts.
"We want to bring awareness to youth soccer across the state," Tamie Endow, a Worcester resident and director of community engagement for Massachusetts Youth Soccer that produced the festival, said. "This summer we are getting out and doing a lot of traveling across the state."
The festival was in Pittsfield June 12 and will be in Leominster July 15 and July 19. Tuesday, July 14, local children were encouraged to participate in games set up by the organization including a small pitch that had been set up on the common.
"Showing up and getting kids together to have fun is the best way. We are so lucky to have such a great community that supports the youth in a way," Natalie Dellecese, a Holden mother who had two children playing on the pitch on Tuesday afternoon, July 14, said. "Soccer is probably the most accessible sport in terms of what you actually need. My boys play in the backyard barefoot with just a ball and making goals out of frisbees."

Before the release of ADPs four months ago, I discussed the 49ers’ biggest fantasy bargain, bust, and wild card. Where do things stand as we approach the first preseason games?
Give it up for Jordan James (RB64 ADP) and rookie Kaelon Black (RB68). One of these two guys will almost certainly be a significant bargain—much hinges on how they look these next few weeks. The rest hinges on whether Christian McCaffrey can stay on the field (more on that in a moment). Both youngsters have one college season of workhorse usage under their belts. In other words, either one presumably could carry the load if needed.
McCaffrey is a clear-cut bust based on historical data showing massive injury and/or regressions for 400+ touch RBs the following season. McCaffrey’s risks are compounded by the fact that he hit 450 touches and is now 30 years old -- oh, and that he suffered similar fates in his two other 400+ touch campaigns. In that far-reaching context, his RB3 ADP makes no sense.
Ricky Pearsall (RB45 ADP) is the biggest wild card. The former first-round pick could become Brock Purdy’s #1 target. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper said he did not know a Cameo video he recorded would be used by FanDuel as a reward for a VIP customer who later sued the sportsbook, saying it took advantage of his gambling addiction.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported last week that a fan named Terry Thompson had wagered $18.5 million with FanDuel and was eventually rewarded with a personalized video from Harper.
In the video, Harper addressed the fan by name and even mentioned the man's young son. Harper shared a screenshot Monday of the request on Cameo, an app that allows users to pay celebrities to record custom videos.
"Had I known FanDuel's true intent, I would not have made the video," Harper said. "The same is true had I known anything about Terry or his situation."
The Inquirer reported Thompson lost $1.5 million, according to a lawsuit that the Public Health Advocacy Institute filed in March in Common Pleas Court in Philadelphia on behalf of Thompson and against FanDuel and DraftKings. Thompson also was reported to have lost money to DraftKings.
