Another option is a multi-year deal that comes in at a lower average annual value for the 36-year-old.

Ajax and FC Twente got their European qualification campaigns up and running on Thursday evening. After a poor Eredivisie season, Ajax find themselves having to go through the Conference League qualifiers, while FC Twente are in the Europa League qualification rounds.
FC Twente hosted Hungarian giants Ferencvaros and came undone at the hands of Hattian forward Lenny Joseph. After around 15 minutes, Joseph had given the away side the lead. Twente did get back into the game before half-time, with defender Aske Adelgaard scoring on his debut for the club. However, with 10 minutes to go, Joseph grabbed his second. Twente now have to travel to Hungary and turn things around, by no means an easy task. However, should they lose, they will drop into the Conference League.
Ajax will likely be in the same round should Twente fail to make it through. The Amsterdam club travelled to Serbia to face Vojvodina and came away with a resounding victory. Davy Klaassen gave Ajax an early lead, only for Peter Sukacev to equalise before the half hour mark. Parity did not last long, with Steven Berghuis giving Ajax the lead. Oscar Gloukh and teenager Mohamed Abdalla made it 4-1 to Ajax, who will be confident of seeing the tie out back at home next week.

One of Paul McGinley's finest hours in the game of golf came at Gleneagles, when the four-time European Tour winner led a veteran group of mostly thirty-somethings to a sound thumping of the Americans in the 40th playing of the Ryder Cup. The win marked the third straight victory for the European side and the eighth win in 10 tries.
McGinley used data prep like no other previous Ryder Cup captain, yet maintained the heartfelt camaraderie that helped make the side a power. He even drew on world-famous soccer managers in the process.
"Remember, you've got teammates, and like we've said all week, the mantra all week, wave after wave of attack," McGinley said of what he told his team Saturday night. "(If) we don't hit with the first wave, hit with the second; if we don't hit with the second, hit with the third. We're coming. … We're relentless, just like the way Man United used to play," he said, drawing inspiration from the English soccer club, whose legendary former manager Alex Ferguson had been enlisted to counsel the Europeans.
Although it's been a dozen years since that victory, McGinley showed the same comfort around the Scottish course on Thursday, posting an impressive 2 under during the first round of play at the ISPS Handa Senior Open.
"It was great. Obviously made some mistakes which I'm not happy about. My Christmas card [scorecard] is like a Christmas tree with different colors on it. A lot of good golf in there. I played well," he said. "The golf course is suiting me because I can chase it and there's a bit of run in the fairways, and course management was pretty good. And I really enjoyed it.

Ex-Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski has congratulated his former teammates following Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup victory, saying he is delighted to see so many young players from the club achieve football’s biggest prize.
The Polish forward, who made his MLS debut for Chicago Fire on Wednesday, was asked about Spain’s triumph over Argentina and had warm words for the Barcelona contingent that lifted the trophy.
Speaking after his first appearance for Chicago Fire, Lewandowski praised the eight Barcelona players who became world champions.
“Many of my teammates at Barcelona have won the World Cup, and I’m very happy for them,” he said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

FC Barcelona remain confident of completing the permanent signing of Joao Cancelo, although the transfer is not expected to be finalized until after the club's pre-season training camp in England, reports Mundo Deportivo.
The outlet claims that the Portuguese full-back has already agreed personal terms with the Blaugrana, making it clear that his priority is to return to the club this summer
The only remaining step is for Barcelona and Al-Hilal, where Cancelo is under contract until 2027, to finalise the transfer once a number of fiscal and administrative details are resolved.
Cancelo's loan spell officially ended at the end of June, shortly before Portugal's elimination from the World Cup.

According to a new report from The Athletic, top NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero is joining Clark and Karl Ravech among a growing number of employees being laid off by ESPN.
"Karl Ravech, one of ESPN's most prominent on-air voices for more than three decades, and NFL insider Tom Pelissero were laid off as part of the network's latest round of cuts Tuesday, according to sources briefed on the moves," Marchand wrote.
Pelissero, who worked for the NFL Network since 2017, has been quoted by us at Steelers Wire more times than we can count. We wish him, Clark, and Ravech the best as they navigate this tough situation.

Angelo Stiller looks increasingly likely to remain at VfB Stuttgart beyond the summer.
According to Sport Bild, the 25-year-old's €36.5 million release clause expires today, July 15.
Stuttgart no longer have to worry about potentially activating an option to buy out the clause for around €3.5 million, as they now hold all the cards regarding the midfielder's future.
As a result, interested clubs – such as Manchester United, who scouted Stiller several times last season – now face a much more difficult task if they want to sign him.
However, the report also claims that Stiller's release clause will become active again in summer 2027, when interested clubs could renew their efforts to sign him.

Police in Davie, Florida have closed an investigation into an accusation that New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith **** aulted a woman at his home. Smith will not face charges.
Per a police report reported by multiple outlets, police cited the absence of witnesses and surveillance footage to corroborate the allegation and carry on with the investigation.
From the police report, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini:
"Due to the inability to review surveillance footage, conflicting stories, and lack of independent witnesses, (the officer) was unable to determine the primary aggressor in the physical altercation."
Per the report, Smith provided police with Ring camera footage that “did not show any physical altercation occur between the two." It’s not clear if there was further surveillance footage that police could not access.

Wrobleski was added to the National League roster in place of injured Reds starter Chase Burns. It’s quite the birthday gift for Wrobleski, who will turn 26 on Tuesday — the day of the All-Star game in Philadelphia.
Wrobleski played one season at OSU (2021) after transferring in from junior college. He made eight starts for the Cowboys, going 3-2 with a 4.20 ERA.

Towering over everybody else, Aday Mara's potential is tantalizing. At 7-foot-3, he makes the rest of the NBA look smaller in comparison. It doesn't take long to brainstorm what his size could do for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Especially since he looks like a toddler playing on a Little Tikes indoor hoop.
That said, it's only taken five Summer League games to see Mara is a giant blob of clay. The Thunder will take on another developmental project as they hope he eventually sharpens out his technique on the court. As mystifying as his size is, he'll need to figure out how to finish through contact and better his conditioning.
Of course, none of that should be a shocker. In the predraft process, those were Mara's main concerns. Even with that, he was still viewed as a lottery pick. The Thunder materialized that with the No. 12 pick of the 2026 NBA draft. He helped Michigan bring home a national championship.
Joining the ***** le contender, Mara has full confidence he can reach his NBA ceiling in OKC. The Thunder are one of the better developmental teams in the league. When you're in a small market and a constant winner for nearly two decades, the draft is your lifeblood.
After Mara had his best Summer League outing yet in OKC's 104-79 loss to the Golden State Warriors, he hopes he can replicate his 10 points, nine rebounds and four ***** ists at the next level. The Thunder continue to double down on size with his addition. The hope is that he turns into Chet Holmgren's next frontcourt partner.

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham made an unexpected appearance at UFC 329 on Saturday night, serving as a special guest Octagon Girl for the co-main event during the card highlighted by Conor McGregor vs. Max Holloway.
The event took place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where Cunningham and the Fever will face the Aces in a prime-time game to be televised by NBC on Sunday night.

Throughout this series of draft articles, one theme has been that the third tier of players was massive enough to blanket multiple rounds. In that vein, I present to you, Carson Kerce. For the most part, Kerce ranks in the top 100-150 range on most boards, but is not truly that much different than many players ranked 40-50 spots higher.

Kerce has been a three-year starter for Georgia Tech, and he made significant offensive strides as a sophomore and junior. He started the 2026 season as something of an afterthought at the back of Georgia Tech’s potent offensive lineup, but his consistent performance in the box ultimately moved him into the team’s leadoff role in April. He finished the 2026 season with a .384/.473/.679 slash line, a career-high 11 home runs and 29 doubles—good for the second-most among DiI hitters. Kerce is a 5-foot-11, 200-pound righthanded hitter who pairs excellent pure contact skills with an advanced, all-fields approach. He has a level, direct swing that yields plenty of hard line drives to both gaps and has cut his strikeout rate consistently throughout college. He managed a 13.3% strikeout rate and standout 90% in-zone contact rate in 2026. While Kerce’s power output has also increased year-over-year, he doesn’t have exceptional over-the-fence pop, the swing or the approach to envision anything more than fringe-average game power with a wood bat. He’s an above-average runner who gets out of the box quickly, but hasn’t been much of a base-stealing threat in college, and has experience all over the infield. Kerce moved from third base to shortstop in 2026, but his actions, range and hands might all be a tick light for an everyday shortstop role in pro ball. He could be better suited for either second or third, or continue playing a bit of everything in a utility infield role.

Tottenham Hotspur are looking at Francisco Trincao, with Sports View crediting Record for the latest update on the Sporting CP attacker. It is not hard to see why Spurs would pay attention. Trincao has rebuilt his reputation in Portugal and has become a serious attacking outlet for Sporting.
The numbers are strong and they matter. The "incredible" 26-year-old produced 11 goals and 15 **** ists in 50 matches last season, a return that places him firmly in the category of effective rather than merely decorative. He is a left-footed forward, he can create, he can carry the ball, and he already knows English football from his previous spell at Wolves.
That said, this is where it gets complicated for Tottenham. Sports View report that Spurs will need to act quickly because there is real competition. Manchester City have been linked, while Saudi Pro League interest appears more concrete. Al-Ahli are said to be in "advanced negotiations" and have already put forward an offer of around €50 million as they search for a replacement for Riyad Mahrez.

Sporting are in a strong position. Trincao is under contract until June 2030 and there is a €60 million release clause in place. That means no discount, no easy leverage, and no drawn-out charm offensive unless the player actively pushes for a move. From Tottenham's perspective, the obvious selling point is the Premier League. If they choose to formalise their interest, that is the route they will have to lean on.

Fiorentina announced its roster for preseason training and the biggest news is that Robin Gosens is not on the list. The veteran leftback’s status was always uncertain this summer and this confirms that he’s on his way out. Sure enough, Nicolò Schira reports that Schalke’s expressed interest in bringing the 32-year-old to the Veltins-Arena.
This news ****** s me out. Gosens seems like a lovely guy and has been a huge part of Fiorentina’s squad both on and off the pitch since he arrived on loan from Union Berlin in 2024. He was one of the side’s most important players under Raffaele Palladino, finishing as the 3rd-leading scorer (8 goals, 9 ****** ists) and making an even bigger impact than those numbers suggest; he finished 3rd in our player of the season poll and fully deserved it.
This past year, though, was as tough on him as it was on everybody else. Never the most mobile player, his struggles to stay in front of quicker opponents were amplified by the miserable defensive ecosystem around him and a hamstring injury that kept him out for 2 months. His teammates’ inability to keep the ball meant he didn’t have time to rumble into the box to create danger at the back post and Paolo Vanoli eventually dropped him in favor of the more dynamic Fabiano Parisi.
Here’s where the character of the man came into play, though. Instead of sulking, Gosens encouraged and coached up his guys from the bench, looking more like a player-coach than a substitute at times. When Parisi went out with a cruciate ligament injury, the Goose didn’t miss a beat and slotted right back in. His leadership, attitude, and overwhelming Germanness (in the best possible way) helped get the club over the line and into safety.
The problem, of course, is his salary. As the 3rd-highest earner at the club last year, he was always in Fabio Paratici’s crosshairs. Leaving him off the ritiro roster is pretty cold but unfortunately, them’s the breaks for a professional athlete. Gosens isn’t washed by any means but his characteristics aren’t the ones Fabio Grosso needs in the squad this year and so off he goes despite his stated desire to stay in Florence.

ICYMI-unfortunately, Penn State has had a rough couple days in recruiting. First, Khalil Taylor tossed the Nittany Lion hat aside to choose Nebraska, and then yesterday, running back Aiden Gibson reclassified to 2026 and swapped to Rutgers.

The Michigan State men's basketball team will tip off against Arkansas at 4:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving, in a showdown at Little Caesars Arena that will be broadcast on CBS.

The matchup, which was first reported in April, also will be streamed on Paramount+.
It'll be part of huge Thanksgiving sports doubleheader in Detroit, with the Detroit Lions playing host to the Chicago Bears at Ford Field. Kickoff is at 1 p.m., with the game also broadcast on CBS.
“I love any time we get a chance to play in Detroit and at Little Caesars Arena,” Tom Izzo, Michigan State men's basketball coach, said in a statement. “When you have a chance to play a game that will be a memory-maker for your players and your program, you take advantage of that opportunity. These are the types of games that will help both teams down the road. There was late drama in Dublin last night (Tuesday July 7) as Celtic and Shelbourne played out a 1-1 draw at a sun soaked Tolka Park in the Hoops’ first outing of pre-season.
The match looked to be heading for a goalless draw until the hosts were awarded and scored a penalty with just a few minutes left to play. Then, just when it looked like the game would end in defeat for the Celts, Maik Nawrocki won a penalty which was converted by Shin Yamada in stoppage time.

Houston Texans - C.J. Stroud should return to his rookie form
Not to sugarcoat it, but this is C.J. Stroud's last season to return to his rookie form and make a deep playoff run. Last season produced a third straight playoff appearance, but for some reason, C.J. Stroud buckled under pressure after receiving a playoff win. He threw four interceptions in his playoff exit, and that cannot happen again. The root cause is said to be the offensive line, which has been addressed, so many believe that the Texans will be just fine this season...We hope.
Jacksonville Jaguars - Travis Hunter will have to be a Hall of Famer to justify the price paid for him

Jake Diebler and the Ohio State basketball team may be in the middle of summer, but things are cooking for the Buckeyes. With the return of John Mobley Jr. and Amare Bynum, along with the additions of two five-star freshmen, OSU is hoping to make a run in the Big Ten and NCAA Tournament this year. Diebler is trying to rebuild a program that hasn't had much success in recent years, and to do so, he'll need to keep adding talent to the roster.
The Henry name has become a fixture for Ohio State athletics. The Buckeyes welcomed Chris Henry Jr. to the football team earlier this year, and sister Seini Henry is a redshirt sophomore on the women's basketball team. Next in line is five-star forward DeMarcus Henry, whom Diebler hopes to lure to Columbus. He has held an offer from OSU since May of 2025. The younger brother is ranked as the No. 5 overall prospect by 247Sports, but has jumped up to the No. 3 player according to both Rivals and ESPN. He is the No. 1 small forward in the 2027 class.
There is no guarantee that the youngest son of former NFL star Chris Henry Sr. will come to Ohio State. However, having two older siblings already on campus can't hurt. For now, DeMarcus keeps rising up the rankings and could be another key piece in Diebler's rebuild of the Buckeyes.

For 78 minutes, Brazil and Norway were locked in a tight and tense Round of 16 clash at the Met Life Stadium. Norway were dominating possession, while Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil side were happy to soak up pressure and try to hit the Norwegians on the counterattack. It did seem that the Round of 16 clash would be decided by a moment of magic and inspiration by the stars on the pitch. That is exactly what transpired as Erling Haaland left his mark on the Round of 16 tie and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Norway pushed forward in the 79th minute and substitute Andreas Schjelderup played in a dangerous cross from the left. Erling Haaland overpowered his Manchester City nemesis, ****** nal centre-back Gabriel, to beat Alisson in the Brazil goal with a superb header to give Norway a 1-0 lead. Erling Haaland had waited for his moment to make an impact in last night’s match. When it arrived, he seized it. It got better for Norway and for Haaland eleven minutes later.
In the 90th minute, Erling Haaland would seal the biggest win in Norwegian football history. Once again Andreas Schjelderup played a pass to Haaland from the left. The Manchester City star received the ball 20 yards out from goal. Haaland took a touch to steady himself and unleashed an unstoppable low drive into the far corner to give Norway a 2-0 lead.
Although Brazil pulled a consolation goal back, last night belonged to Norway and Erling Haaland. Haaland’s brace and heroics were a special moment in this summer’s World Cup. It will also be looked back upon as a famous moment in World Cup history.
