Texans expect David Montgomery to fix their biggest offensive weakness originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
When the Houston Texans report for training camp, one of the biggest storylines will be the arrival of veteran running back David Montgomery and the impact he can have on an offense looking to establish a more consistent ground game.
Houston made Montgomery a priority this offseason after its rushing attack struggled throughout 2025. The Texans averaged just 3.9 yards per carry last season, ranking fourth-lowest in the NFL, and the organization believes Montgomery is the physical runner capable of changing that trend.
Known for his toughness, vision, and ability to break tackles, Montgomery brings a downhill running style that fits Houston's desire to become more balanced on offense. He has built a reputation as one of the league's most dependable power backs, consistently finding tough yards between the tackles while wearing down opposing defenses.
Beyond his ability to move the chains, Montgomery has been one of the NFL's most productive goal-line runners. During his three seasons with the Detroit Lions, he rushed for 33 touchdowns, proving to be a reliable finisher in the red zone. That production is exactly what the Texans hope to add to an offense that left valuable points on the field last season.

Circle—the company behind USDC (the digital dollar used by millions worldwide for payments, savings, and international transfers)—just bought the blockchain patent library IBM spent more than a decade building. The deal, announced July 27, hands Circle over 1,000 blockchain patents issued by IBM worldwide.
Patents are legal rights that give the holder exclusive control over a specific invention. If you hold a patent on a method for processing transactions on a blockchain—the shared digital ledger where crypto activity is permanently recorded and can't be altered—you get to decide who else uses it and on what terms. IBM had been building that kind of leverage since its mid-2010s enterprise blockchain push.
By December 2025, patent ******* ytics firm PatSnap credited IBM with 790 U.S. blockchain patents—more than any other American company, with Bank of America a distant second at roughly 200. Circle, which received its first-ever patent in December 2023 (covering parallel blockchain data processing—a technique for verifying multiple groups of transactions simultaneously), went from essentially zero to the top of the U.S. rankings overnight.
"The portfolio comprises over 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide, spanning foundational blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations," Circle said in its official announcement.
Circle plans to put them to work across its entire stack. "The expanded IP position directly supports Circle's foundation for building the internet financial system, including USDC, Circle Payments Network, Arc, and a growing suite of onchain products and agentic financial tools," the company added. Arc is Circle's own payment-focused blockchain built for institutional finance. The agentic tools are AI-powered software programs that can execute financial transactions autonomously—no human required for each step.

Mississippi is suing two former football players who transferred to LSU this offseason, alleging both failed to repay portions of their NIL compensation after leaving the program.
According to the Clarion Ledger — part of the USA TODAY Network — the Rebels filed civil complaints against defensive end Princewill Umanmielen and offensive lineman Devin Harper on Monday, July 27 in a Lafayette County Circuit Court.
The Rebels are seeking almost $1 million between the two lawsuits combined for unreceived payments —$550,000 for Umanmielen's early termination penalty and $400,000 for Harper's early termination penalty — as well as litigation fees resulting from the lawsuit.
RANKINGS: Who has the best college football stadium? Our top 25 rankings starts with LSU
"The University of Mississippi values its student-athletes and is committed to honoring all obligations made to them," Ole Miss said in a statement to the Clarion Ledger. "In return, the university expects that same commitment from its student-athletes and their representatives in upholding their contracts.

As the 2026 college football season swiftly approaches, USA TODAY Sports revealed their full Big Ten stadium rankings for the 18-member conference.
While there is no true way to compose a ranking outside of a subjective nature, the Big Ten's expansive list of historic venues certainly makes its difficult to appease all fan bases.
One could lean into the capacity, historic significance, or even the overall fit on campus. That being said, Kinnick Stadium earns its proper due as one of the league's top venues.
Iowa's Kinnick Stadium ranks as the No. 5 Big Ten stadium, per USA TODAY Sports:
Iowa's 27-8 mark at home since 2021 has help the Hawkeyes maintain their place among the top programs in the Big Ten. Debuting in 2017, "The Hawkeye Wave" will have players and fans turn at the end of the opening quarter and wave to the patients at Stead Family Children's Hospital.

It was always going to be tough for Xavier McKinney to top his first season with the Green Bay Packers, and indeed his second year in green and gold was more understated.
McKinney's eight picks in 2024 were the most by a Packer since Charles Woodson, who had nine back in 2009. Interceptions were harder to come by for Green Bay as a defense in 2025, and for McKinney it was no different.
It would therefore be easy to say his season was a relative disappointment, but the underlying numbers suggest it was anything but.
When looking at McKinney's rankings among eligible safeties in 2025 compared to 2024 in a range of statistics, there is plenty to feel good about from his second season with the Packers.
The lower interception count is notable, with only two in 2025, one of which he should have batted down instead on a fourth down versus the Browns.

Florida State football is upon us.
FSU heads into 2026 with plenty looming over the program after two straight losing seasons from the Seminoles. Ashton Daniels arrives as the latest attempt to solve the quarterback position, five new starters have to come together on the offensive line, the defense is banking on a young group taking a Year 2 leap and hanging over all of it is a coaching staff that most everyone outside the building believes is operating without a safety net.
FanDuel currently has Florida State's over/under set at 5.5 (betting $10 for over would earn you $6.58, under would be $12.40), having dropped from 6.5 in March. For perspective, last season's over-under was 7.5.
In ESPN's preseason FPI rankings, the Seminoles were placed at No. 28, ranking their strength of schedule at No. 22. FPI projects FSU's record as 6.7-5.4, giving it a 71% chance at finishing over 6 wins, a 3.2% chance to win the ACC and a 9.2% chance to make the playoffs.
With fall camp beginning and the countdown to kickoff against New Mexico State a month away, we wanted to dive into seven big questions heading into the season.

I broke down the 2027 scouting classes in my early summer scouting series, and the room has a ton of potential with a long list of potential standout players. I broke down the offense and defense in articles and I suggest reading those for a broad aspect of the room. Brock Bowers remains an elite tight end, and arguably the best in the NFL, but the Raiders do have some questions behind Bowers after the 2026 season. Former 2nd rounder Michael Mayer is sent to be a free agent, and with a good season he should be looking at a decent contract as a TE2, blocking specialist. Additionally, Ian Thomas is set to be a free agent and Las Vegas also has former UDFA Carter Runyon, who's flashed, but it's likely even with retaining Mayer the Raiders should add another TE.
These rankings are extremely early, and they will evolve over not only the summer but the next 8-10 months throughout the season, and into draft season. Some lists will feature 10, 15, 20, or more ranked prospects but I'll include others on the list below to note.
Jamari Johnson, Oregon – 6'5/260, R-So
Johnson was a key focal point of the Ducks offense last year with 32 receptions, 510 yards, and 3 TD after coming over from Louisville. He's better than Kenyon Sadiq, and in my opinion has a chance to be a better prospect than Bowers. Johnson has absurd movement skills, he's shown exceptional length, fires off the ball, and Johnson also shows a ton of quickness and movement in his route running. Johnson has fluid hips, he makes his cuts well, and Johnson shows an innate ability to adjust to the ball in the air and come down with tough catches. Where he makes a ton of impact is as a run blocker, where Johnson uses his length and athleticism with good technique, and a ton of lower body power to get off the line of scrimmage and into ***** e. Johnson will need to continue his play as the starter at TE, instead of the supplementary piece, but he has the core traits, athleticism, and technique to be a top 10 pick.
Peter Clarke, Temple – 6'6/270, Sr

The New Orleans Saints built a deeper, more balanced roster in the team's second offseason under head coach Kellen Moore. They made additions across the offense and defense that appear to have raised the team's ceiling ahead of training camp.
Keep in mind that these rankings weigh production, talent, depth, and upside. Positional value is not considered, as you can see from the highest-ranked position. This is strictly about the quality of each room.
Travis Etienne Jr. produced 1,399 scrimmage yards and 13 touchdowns with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. Pairing him with Alvin Kamara and several capable backups makes this the roster's deepest room. Even a player of Kendre Miller's talent and upside is at risk of getting cut.
Kelvin Banks Jr., David Edwards, Erik McCoy, Cesar Ruiz, and Taliese Fuaga are a starting five that has no weak link other than injury and availability. This line, if it can stay fully healthy, has a top-10 ceiling. There shouldn't be any issues with time-to-throw for Tyler Shough.
Chris Olave is coming off of a season that saw him catch 100 passes for 1,163 yards and nine touchdowns. Now, Jordyn Tyson arrives via pick No. 8 in the 2026 NFL Draft. Adding Bryce Lance, Devaughn Vele, Mason Tipton, Bub Means, Ja'Lynn Polk, and others to this group — and that's what makes it fall into the top three.

Derrick White question takes center stage in Celtics' early rankings originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
When it comes to the offseason, there was really just one move for the Boston Celtics that took all the headlines. We're talking about, of course, trading Jaylen Brown.
Losing Brown will make a major shift in this organization and completely changes the chemistry of the current Celtics' roster. They still have Jayson Tatum and Derrick White, thankfully. They also added Mitchell Robinson, which can only help.
So, all is not lost, and some of the team's core player are still there. But, there's no getting around that things are going to look different for the Celtics this season.
In a power ranking feature out from John Schuhmann of the NBA's official website, the Celtics are ranked No. 6 in the Eastern Conference. His main question is about whether White can rediscover his shot.

Giannis Antetokounmpo trade didn't fix everything for the Heat originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Few deals were bigger than the Miami Heat bringing Giannis Antetokounmpo to town. What a blockbuster move. The Heat obviously mean business for the coming season, and they've instantly become a real contender with Antetokounmpo in the fold.
Antetokounmpo was a statement move. It instantly took the Heat up several notches in early power rankings. But, time will tell if Antetokounmpo can lead this team to the championship. The Heat certainly have a better chance now.
But, the Heat aren't favorites quite yet. They're still behind a handful of NBA teams, and there's one question for Miami that really stands out.

When the Philadelphia 76ers signed veteran LeBron James to their roster, it definitely changed things for the Knicks. The 76ers are a key rival, and now, they have one of the greatest NBA stars of all time on their roster. Not only that, but James is motivated to win.

The "NFL Top 100 Players" is an annual NFL offseason tradition. There are a few names from the Kansas City Chiefs expected to make the cut, but there are also many opponents featured in this year's rankings. Player No. 59 is a player they are scheduled to see across from them this coming season.
No. 59 is Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix.
Nix started all 17 games for the Broncos in 2025, finishing with 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for 3,931 yards. He set the record for the most wins in a single regular season by a Broncos quarterback with 14 while tying Russell Wilson for the league record of the most wins by a quarterback through two seasons with 24.
Nix and the AFC West rival Broncos will play the Chiefs twice in the 2026 season. They will play in Week 1 on Monday Night Football, September 14, at Arrowhead Stadium, and in Week 8, on November 1, at Empower Field at Mile High.
Produced by NFL Films and the X Original Series, the new season of NFL Top 100 features short-form episodes that reveal the league's top players, as voted on exclusively by current NFL players. Episodes debut on X on weekdays through Friday, September 4, and will air later on NFL+, as well as on other NFL-owned and operated social media platforms.

The NFL atmosphere in Motown is one of dedication, passion, and a proud fan base donning the Silver and Honolulu Blue. While Detroit's football history is often ***** ociated with championship droughts, the city has remained a constant community of Lions fans, who are now enjoying a competitive resurgence over the past few years under coach Dan Campbell. Texas A&M's No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class features a nation-high six five-star commitments, led by the program's top prospect, five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews, who is widely considered the best pass protector with the potential to become a future first-round NFL Draft selection.
Combined with fellow OL Kennedy Brown, safety Kamarui Dorsey, Edge Zyron Forstall, cornerback Raylaun Henry, and wide receiver Eric McFarland, third-year coach Mike Elko and his staff are very close to locking down the No. 1-ranked 2027 cycle.
After landing four-star linebacker Mikahi Allen, five-star running back Landen Williams-Callis, who will announce his commitment on August 1, remains the lone priority prospect, but is expected to land with the Texas Longhorns after his OV to Austin this summer. Even if the Aggies don't secure Williams-Callis's commitment, Texas A&M's 2027 running back room will be in good shape regardless.
At wide receiver, three-star Demani Warren and four-star Jayden Upshawn complement Eric McFarland's elite speed and versatility as the likely future starting slot receiver once Mario Craver departs for the NFL, and will immediately compete for a starting role in 2027 with second-year receiver Madden Williams in the slot.
Among the top-ranked wide receiver prospects in the 2027 cycle, McFarland comes in at No. 7 in MaxPreps writer Zach Poff's top-10 rankings, which is quite impressive given the site's sole dedication to covering high school prospects.

The halfway point of the 2026 WNBA season is here. The All-Star Game is over and the trade deadline looms at 3 p.m. ET, Aug. 2. Teams must now decide if they're going all-in for a championship run or hitting the reset ****** on ahead of next season.
Typically, the WNBA doesn't see blockbuster deals at the trade deadline, but there have been a few exceptions. The Connecticut Sun acquired Marina Mabrey from the Chicago Sky at the 2024 deadline before advancing to the semifinals in the playoffs. In 2015, the Minnesota Lynx picked up Sylvia Fowles — also from the Sky — on their way to winning what would be their third of four championships in seven seasons.
Will a league-altering trade be made this season? That remains to be seen, but it's a fun exercise to speculate.
This week's WNBA power rankings, which publish every Tuesday, are accompanied by trades we think make sense for every team.
Trade target: Sydney Taylor, G, Chicago Sky

We're focusing on the wrong people here, everyone. At the wrong time, and in the wrong moment with the never-ending mess at North Carolina.
Bill Belichick was an out-of-work football coach no one wanted.
Michael Lombardi was an out-of-work former NFL personnel executive no one wanted.
And Lee Roberts and John Preyer — arguably the two most powerful men in the state of North Carolina — decided to go all-in with all involved in December 2024. To save a North Carolina football program that didn't necessarily need saving, it needed tweaking.
ACC football coach rankings: Move Mario Cristobal ahead of Dabo Swinney

As we gear up for the 2026 football season, Aggies Wire is breaking down nearly every player on the Texas A&M roster. Throughout the preseason, each profile will highlight a player's background, recruiting rankings out of high school, and projected role under head coach Mike Elko.
Texas A&M's run defense left plenty to be desired at times last season, and just as Elko made it a priority to overhaul the secondary with length and speed, he approached the linebacker room with the same intentionality. The staff has done a strong job building a youthful foundation, but they needed a veteran presence who could step in and stabilize the unit immediately. Enter senior Tulsa transfer Ray Coney.
Coney's importance grew even further once projected starter Daymion Sanford suffered a lower‑body injury during the Maroon & White Spring Game, sidelining him for an unspecified portion of the 2026 campaign. In his lone season at Tulsa, Coney was one of the most productive linebackers in the American Conference, recording 129 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and a forced fumble. His breakout year earned him 2025 American All‑Conference First Team honors, 2025 Phil Steele's American Conference First Team recognition, and a spot on the 2025 East‑West Shrine Bowl 1000 Watch List.
There's real optimism inside the program about what Coney can become in Elko's system, and the Aggies will need that development to materialize quickly as they search for his running mate until Sanford returns to the lineup.

According to Spotrac's contract rankings, which include deals announced but not yet finalized, the $3,876,529 James will take home next season is the 292nd-ranked payday in the NBA. That means that the global celebrity who leveraged his fame into billionaire status will earn the exact same amount as, say, DeAndre Jordan, a third-string center who appeared in 12 games all of last season.

Jack Draper has pulled out of this week's Mubadala DC Open with an arm injury, tournament officials have announced.
It is the latest setback for the 24-year-old, who has been dogged by fitness issues throughout the year and missed the first three grand slam events.
The former world No 4, who has now fallen to a ranking of 147, had been due to play American Alex Michelsen in the first round.
A statement on X read: "Jack Draper has withdrawn from the tournament with a left arm injury. He will be replaced in the draw by lucky loser Mackenzie McDonald."
It is understood that Draper has withdrawn to focus on next month's ATP Tour events in Montreal and Cincinnati, although he would need a wild card in both, and the US Open, for which he would probably need to qualify.

The Ohio State basketball program is starting to get a lot of attention from high school recruits, and the latest is a four-star guard out of La Porte, Indiana. At 6-foot, 1-inch, and ranked as the No. 9 combo guard and 55th overall prospect in the 2027 class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Joshua Tyson named Ohio State in his final six schools on Monday.
Also included in those six schools were Cincinnati, Clemson, Michigan State, Virginia Tech, and Xavier. There does not appear to be a leader in the race, and no timetable is available for a commitment, but the Buckeyes seem to be clearly making an impression.
The news comes just days after top-ten center in the 2027 class, Jaydn Jenkins, also had Ohio State as one of the schools he is considering, naming the Buckeyes in his top five. There are all kinds of disclaimers with this, of course. It's still way too early to get excited, and OSU is a part of a handful of teams, all with good pedigrees, so the competition will be fierce.
However, as more news becomes available, we'll bring it to you.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker III was ranked No. 9 overall in Sports Illustrated's rankings of the top 10 running backs for the 2026 season.
"Walker earned PFF's highest rushing grade in 2025 at 91.4, and also hauled in 31 receptions for 202 receiving yards—a positive for coach Andy Reid, who's known for using his running backs in the passing game," Sports Illustrated's Mike Kadlick said of Kansas City's new bell cow.
Walker rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 2025 and was an impactful player for the Seattle Seahawks in the lead-up to their victory in Super Bowl LX earlier this year. The former Michigan State Spartan has the potential to put up even more impressive numbers in Kansas City next season, which may add to his status as a top 10 running back in the league and put him in a position to enter the highest tier of elite players at his position.

Notre Dame football is fairly close to closing out its 2027 recruiting class, with 23 total commitments after Brayden Parks made his verbal on Thursday.
The Irish have an elite class, one that ranks among the best in the nation and could end up being the top overall class. With that said, Notre Dame has the luxury of moving onto the 2028 cycle, one where they already have two commits, safety Andre Jones and kicker Owen Davies.
One of their top targets is Illinois edge rusher Darieon Prescott, a 5-star in the 247Sports Composite, ranking as the No. 18 overall player in the class. On Friday the 6-foot, 6-inch and 220-pound star announced via On3's Hayes Fawcett that he'll be committing on Monday with Notre Dame, Oregon and Texas A&M as his finalists.
Prescott has visited all three schools, as he was in South Bend to see the Irish hosting Purdue. Scanning his social media, it doesn't look like he visited this spring, but he did see the Ducks and Aggies. It's hard to say where he's leaning at the moment, but the hope is that proximity plays a part in Prescott's decision and joins other Illinois players who matriculate to Notre Dame.
