Marathon Petroleum (NYSE:MPC) reported $17.73 in quarterly earnings per share against a $13.95 estimate, and its stock is up 90.47% year to date. If you have been grumbling at the pump about $4.08 gasoline, congratulations, you found the party. However, you were not invited unless you were invested here.
CNBC's Pippa Stevens laid out the setup on air Tuesday. "Fuel prices are high and crude has pulled back, creating a perfect situation for the refiners. EPS up 975% quarter over quarter and nearly 350% year over year." That is the whole thesis in two sentences. Marathon booked $5.14 billion in net income, up from $1.22 billion a year earlier, and returned over $2.80 billion to shareholders in a single quarter. Revenue landed at $51.99 billion. That cleared the $41.44 billion consensus.

El SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The Chargers' second day in pads took place Thursday morning at The Bolt and featured more live-play situations, along with one-on-one reps between the offensive and defensive lines.
Right off the bat, left tackle Rashawn Slater, who left the first padded practice on Tuesday, warmed up with the team and played a couple of snaps at left tackle during 11-on-11. He rotated with Trey Pipkins and Branson Taylor.
Taylor saw the most reps at left guard with the first-team offensive line in front of quarterback Justin Herbert. In fact, he took all of the reps unless he was moved to left tackle. The Chargers might like the growth they have seen from his rookie year until now, which could explain why he is seeing consistent playing time.
Kayode Awosika stepped in at left guard when Taylor moved to left tackle. When Trey Lance was at quarterback, the offensive line in front of him consisted of Pipkins, Awosika, Jake Slaughter, Trevor Penning and Logan Taylor.
The offensive line did a better job during 11-on-11 on Thursday than it did during the first padded practice.

Celtic's hopes of signing Haissem Hassan have taken a hit after fresh claims suggested the Egyptian international now favours Marseille. According to Celtic FC News Room, the Ligue 1 side have reached an agreement on personal terms with the 24-year-old after holding discussions for several weeks. The Vikings' defense has enjoyed the presence of Harrison Smith ever since he was drafted back in 2012. The team enjoys his presence on and off the field, but at 37, some things are just not the same as they used to be. As a result, the unsigned veteran is sitting on the side waiting for something to change or to retire.
Meanwhile, the team is in the middle of training camp and preparing to move on from Smith, unless, of course, he wants to come back. They are preparing for the future by drafting Jakobe Thomas out of Miami (FL), and they will lean on the remaining veterans.
None of this seems to matter, though, based on the recent work done by ESPN's Benjamin Solak. He wrote about his takeaways from Vikings camp, which did include some thoughts on Smith and the Vikings' safety position.
He writes, "There's no way to replace safety Harrison Smith. . .That's if he retires. It isn't formalized yet, and the Vikings are hoping he returns despite drafting safety Jakobe Thomas in the third round. While I was at camp, Thomas was not yet taking many first-team reps, but that's understandable, given how complex this defense is. . .My sense in watching practice and speaking to folks on the ground is there's no one winning idea for how to replace Smith just yet."
There has to be some faith placed on the shoulders of Brian Flores with the trio he has in place. Led by Josh Metellus, the Vikings' safeties have played well under the tutelage of Flores. Losing Smith will be a heavy hit, but time will tell how tough a transition it is.

American tennis star Coco Gauff weighed in on the WTA's new **** testing requirement for players, saying she understands the desire to create fair competition while also expressing her support for the transgender community.
Gauff, the world No. 4-ranked singles player is competing in the National Bank Open in Toronto, a 13-day tournament that started last week. She answered a question about the policy after her second-round win against fellow American Kayla Day on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
"I understand the reasoning behind it and I do think this kind of conversation has created a lot of animosity towards the trans community, which I'm not really a big fan of, but I also understand the, I guess, biological difference and the need to protect that and preserve that," Gauff said. "So I think it's a conversation that is very nuanced and I need to have a nuanced answer. So yes, I kind of agree with trying to protect the fairness in women's sports, but also do not like the attack that it is creating (by) people who don't really care but just want to use this as a reason to attack the trans community.
"I don't really know how to answer this question in a way that people aren't gonna spin it. But as far as where I stand, I definitely support the trans community but I also support the need of creating fairness in sport, too."
The WTA changed its gender eligibility policy July 21, requiring all players take a one-time SRY gene test. The test, done by blood sample or cheek swab, checks for the presence of a gene found on the Y chromosome and **** ociated with typical male **** development. If a player tests positive, they will be ineligible to compete unless they can prove to the satisfaction of the WTA medical personnel that they have Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome or another developmental **** disorder.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes Bhuvneshwar ******* ar's lack of regular 50-over and first-class cricket could prove to be a major hurdle if he is to force his way into India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

While praising the veteran seamer's performances in the IPL, Chopra said preparing for a 50-over World Cup requires sustained workload management, something that cannot be achieved by playing only T20 cricket.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra was asked about the World Cup prospects of both Bhuvneshwar ******* ar and Mohammad Shami.

"One thing goes against Bhuvi. I love him to bits, and I want him to play for India again, but when you don't play Ranji, your workload becomes limited. There are a handful of matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In ODI cricket, you have to bowl 10 overs and field for 50 overs in a match. It's a lot of workload."

Bhuvneshwar has not featured in a first-class match since January 2024 and last played a List A game in December 2023. Despite that, he has enjoyed an impressive run with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, playing a key role in their back-to-back IPL ******* le-winning campaigns.

Chopra stressed that excelling in the IPL alone should not be the basis for selection in a 50-over World Cup.

"It's not easy in a tournament like the World Cup where you have to keep playing continuously. Not only the World Cup, but you will have to be a part of every ODI game from a year earlier. You will have to start playing him from now on."

According to Chopra, if the selectors are serious about including Bhuvneshwar in their long-term plans, they need to bring him back into the ODI setup immediately.

"He is not a bad option, but it will be a mistake unless we give him at least one year to get ready. If you pick someone for the 50-over World Cup based on him bowling four overs in the two months of the IPL and a month of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, no matter how good that person is, it will be wrong."

He also suggested that Bhuvneshwar should feature in the upcoming ODI series and even the T20I ******* ignments if he remains under consideration for the 2027 World Cup.
Comparing Bhuvneshwar with Mohammad Shami, Chopra felt the latter currently has a stronger case because he has continued playing red-ball cricket, including the Ranji Trophy, where he claimed 37 wickets. Shami is also set to feature in the upcoming Duleep Trophy.

However, Chopra maintained that Bhuvneshwar had the better IPL season.

"It's the same thing for Shami, although he has played the Ranji Trophy and picked up 37 wickets. He is going to play the Duleep Trophy now as well. So Shami has a slightly better case to make, but the truth is that if we do man-to-man marking in the IPL, Bhuvneshwar ******* ar is ahead of him in that respect."

Chopra believes the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand could provide a clear indication of India's plans.

Being a professional sports broadcaster is difficult … or, at least it's supposed to be. But one Philadelphia Phillies fan made the job look incredibly easy after he was able to call an inning during Wednesday's game.
Lewis Kalb, a substitute teacher, won an auction to perform an inning of play-by-play during a Phillies radio broadcast. He got that chance in the third inning of Wednesday's 10-4 loss to the Washington Nationals and absolutely knocked it out of the park.
The instant Kalb started talking, fans could probably tell they were about to experience something special. Turns out, Kalb had the perfect baseball broadcaster voice. Oh, and he also had the chops to actually call the action.
There were a few errors throughout, though it was tough to catch them unless you were really paying attention. Kalb got the count wrong on the first batter, saying it was 1-1 when it was actually 0-2. He also called a pitch location wrong once or twice. But his delivery was so flawless and he was so well-composed that fans might have missed that live and in the moment.
Overall, Kalb was fantastic

The warning envisaged attacks ‌on the energy facilities, oil fields, refineries, electricity grids, water infrastructure, transport networks and other strategic **** ets of Washington's closest Arab allies, according to a senior Iranian official.
The ‌message, part of a broader Iranian effort to deter further U.S. military action by raising the prospect of severe economic disruption across the Gulf, was delivered through a flurry of high-level diplomatic contacts after Trump threatened on July 28 to strike Iran's energy network and infrastructure, the sources said.
Two senior Iranian officials, two Gulf sources and a senior regional diplomat with knowledge of the discussions said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi spoke with his Saudi, Turkish and Qatari counterparts, as well as Pakistan's army chief. Aston Villa look set to complete a smart piece of business, with Marca reporting that Matteo Ruggeri is on the verge of leaving Atlético Madrid for Villa Park. The broad outline is simple, Villa have reached an agreement with Atlético, and the only thing left is the player's final approval.
The numbers matter. Villa would pay £18 million guaranteed, with a further £6 million in variables. For a left-back who has clearly dropped out of the immediate picture, that is a deal Atlético are ready to take and one Villa seem comfortable backing. There is no mystery here, his future has shifted quickly and decisively.
Ruggeri will not travel with Atlético on their pre-season trip to South Korea, which tells you plenty. Clubs do not make that call unless they expect movement. After talks involving his representatives and Villa, the operation has advanced to the point where his departure now feels like a matter of timing rather than doubt.
He had worked with the main group earlier in pre-season, but once Villa's interest became serious, his situation changed. That usually means the coaching staff and the hierarchy are already planning for life after the player. Juventus and Roma checked on him earlier in the summer, while Liverpool and Newcastle reportedly asked late questions, yet Villa have done the heavy lifting.
From Villa's perspective, this is coherent squad building. Unai Emery wants options, reliability and tactical discipline in wide areas. Ruggeri fits that profile. He is young, he comes from a high-level environment, and the fee is not reckless by Premier League standards.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's status as an ineligible player has continued for over eight months, and he can't attempt an NFL return unless he takes one step.
Aiyuk was placed on the 49ers' left squad list in December 2025 for going AWOL amid contract disputes from voided 2026 guarantees after failing to meet rehab targets for his torn ACL.
Aiyuk remains on the list and is ineligible to play for the 49ers or any other team in the NFL, and the 28-year-old must take one step to hopefully continue his NFL future on a new team.
The only way for Aiyuk to seek reinstatement into the league is by sending a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell requesting the same, and sending a copy to the 49ers, with whom Aiyuk has reportedly not been communicating since their disputes began.
Unless the Commissioner allows Aiyuk's reinstatement, neither the player nor the team can change his current contract status.

Everyone is waiting for when the major AI spending would start bearing fruit. But Aswath Damodaran, the NYU Stern finance professor known as the "Dean of Valuation," is raising alarm bells and thinks the ROI may not return soon and may not reach the levels many expect. During a program on CNBC, he specifically mentioned Meta (NASDAQ:META), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG), and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT).
Damodaran's main concern is returns on capital. Damodaran said he looked at the marginal return on invested capital across the Mag Five, excluding Tesla and Nvidia. He measured the change in operating income against the change in invested capital for the three companies. The drop-off, he said, is "pretty amazing given how big these companies are."
Here's the problem. These companies are spending tens of billions on AI CapEx, and they're not slowing down. Unless the earnings start matching that spending, he warned, a very different kind of company emerges from the mix — more capital-intensive, with lower returns on invested capital. There's nothing inherently wrong with that, but he thinks investors in these names aren't used to the risks of owning a heavier, lower-return business.
On the AI **** e overall, Damodaran believes the market hit "peak AI" a few months ago, and he expects more consolidation and correction ahead. He sees the recent post-earnings pop as a sign of how badly investors want exposure.

One of the commenters on the Daulton Varsho lab asked if I would do a lab on Trevor Larnach. Usually, I don't pay much attention to what hasn't been done, but multiple reports have now indicated that a deal was in place to send Bryan Abreu to the Twins in exchange for Larnach. According to all of those sources, Jim Crane nixed the deal. Before I dive into numbers, we should probably look at the differences between the two deals.
Everyone has opined about the Varsho deal. The primary criticism is that you traded away a pitcher with years of control (can become a free agent following the 2029 season) for a player with no control beyond this season. However, Arrighetti had minimal present value. He was 7-5 with a 4.60 ERA, but virtually all of those wins came in a brilliant first month that saw him win the Pitcher of the Month Award. He was not currently in the Astros rotation and some would argue that he wouldn't likely rejoin it unless there were major injuries. So, this was a classic get something now for someone that could help in the future kind of deal.
As much as I have enjoyed covering performance in spurts lately, the overall numbers on Arrighetti tell a story. He is 15-23 with a 4.66 ERA. He had a really good month in 2024 and a really good month this season. Take those two months away and he is a 5.00 ERA pitcher. Naturally, the Blue Jays are thinking but what if he can become THAT pitcher again? The deal makes sense for them because they aren't going anywhere this season anyway, so why not trade for a lottery ticket?
The Larnach trade is different because you would have traded a pitcher that has an ERA near 2.00 since May 1st. Abreu is useful to you right now and certainly has been lately. The fact that the trade was vetoed by ownership means one of two things (both can be true at the same time). First, Jim Crane has little confidence in Dana Brown, so he is micromanaging him through the end of his contract. Secondly, Crane might actually be interested in re-signing Abreu and that wouldn't happen if he is dealt.
Both of those statements deserves some additional focus, but I will save that for another piece. In this piece, we will look at what Brown was thinking and whether there was some upside there. Larnach has only been a regular for three seasons, so we will go back three years instead of five like we did for Varsho. However, we are looking at the same numbers as yesterday's piece except I will jettison bases per out for now.

Police have been called to Perez Hilton's Miami home after he shared what appeared to be a self-harm video to TikTok.
Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Office confirmed on Tuesday night that they had received "multiple calls" of "an individual livestreaming acts of self-harm on social media" and dispatched deputies to investigate.
Officers spoke with Hilton's family members who were on the scene and ultimately decided to "tactfully disengage" while continuing to "monitor the situation" after confirming the celebrity blogger was alone inside.
"In many incidents involving a person experiencing a mental health crisis or actively harming themselves, deputies prioritise de-escalation by creating time, distance and opportunities for communication," the Sheriff's Office shared in a statement to Page Six.
"Unless there is an immediate threat to others, slowing the situation and utilising crisis intervention techniques can reduce the likelihood of a suicide-by-cop encounter and minimise the risk of injury to the individual, deputies and the public," the statement continued.
Hilton had reportedly appeared on the livestream naked, bloodied and distressed. The video was reportedly available on TikTok for around 30 minutes before it was taken down, and his account has since been suspended.

There's no debate over who's going to be RB1, as LJ Martin enters his fourth and final season at BYU with some reachable school records in sight if he maintains the pace he established in 2025 before missing the 25-21 win over Georgia Tech in the Pop-Tarts Bowl after shoulder surgery.
Even the five spots on the offensive line are mostly settled, especially if Washington transfer Paki Finau proves capable at the all-important left tackle position.
Putting together a BYU football depth chart a month before the season starts is usually a fool's errand, but not this year. That speaks to just how experienced head coach Kalani Sitake's roster is heading into arguably the most-anticipated season in school history.
Expectations are soaring for Sitake's program, and for good reason. According to a report by CBS Sports, BYU is No. 3 in the country in overall returning players with snaps under their belt, at 63%. On offense, it is 60% and on defense it is 65%. While a lot of programs continue to hit the transfer portal hard, BYU has relied more on roster retainment and player development after the near-disaster that was the 2023 season, in which coaches prepared for their first season in the Big 12 with a massive roster overhaul.

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell confirmed that the Seminoles have had discussions with former players after a recent ruling granted a fifth year of eligibility to athletes who graduated high school in 2022.
"We've talked to compliance. We've had some former players that we have communicated with, or they reached out, to get a sense of what it might look like," he said during a press conference on Tuesday. "So, we're just going to work through the process there. I know that it is definitely a unique dynamic."
While the ruling is a blanket one to all athletes who began their collegiate careers in the 2022-23 season, there are a few exceptions and limitations involved with it. The ruling does not include football players who signed professional contracts, and it prohibits the newly eligible players from entering the transfer portal unless they had already entered the portal this offseason.
Former Florida State quarterback Tommy Castellanos, who only received a couple of rookie minicamp invites as a wide receiver rather than signing with a team as an undrafted free agent, has reportedly explored the idea of a comeback — either as a quarterback or as an "athlete."
Linebacker Elijah Herring is the only other player eligible to return to the Seminoles under the current ruling, as defensive back Jerry Wilson and wide receiver Squirrel White signed contracts as undrafted players, with White having also retired from football in May.

Big Ten Media Days wrapped up last week and with the annual trek to Chicago came the media projections for each and every team in the conference.
We noted in our rundown last week that Iowa had three pre-season All-Big Ten nominees in offensive linemen Kade Pieper and Trevor Lauck, as well as defensive back Zach Lutmer, who also garnered votes for defensive player of the year in the conference. They were joined by TE DJ Vonnahme, who earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten.
As for the team overall, they were picked to finish 8th in the conference according to the media.
But the media doesn't always know what they're talking about (unless, of course, they're fan media on ablog, then they are always right about everything) and when it comes to perception of the Iowa Hawkeyes, that can be especially true. Manchester City have opened direct talks with the representatives of Chelsea winger Pedro Neto, beginning preliminary discussions over a potential summer move to the Etihad Stadium, according to Fabrizio Romano. Enzo Maresca and Xabi Alonso are at the Etihad Stadium and Stamford Bridge.
Last season's Premier League runners-up have placed the 26-year-old Portuguese international high on their shortlist as part of contingency planning for Savinho. With Tottenham Hotspur pushing aggressively to sign the Brazilian winger, City decision-makers are actively exploring alternatives. Neto's direct running, explosive pace, and Premier League pedigree make him an appealing target for City's coaching staff.
However, the situation is complicated by an interconnected transfer domino involving Tottenham. While Spurs are pushing to finalise a deal for Savinho, they also have Neto on their shortlist as a primary backup option should talks with Manchester City stall. As a result, both Premier League heavyweights are monitoring the Portuguese forward's availability closely.
Any potential deal will ultimately hinge on Chelsea's valuation. Having invested heavily to sign Neto from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a long-term contract, the Stamford Bridge hierarchy hold strong leverage. The middle to late rounds are where you might find a fantasy football tight end sleeper without wrecking your roster. The NFL names below all sit outside the top few at their position, yet each has a path to more targets, a bigger red-zone role, or a leap in quarterback play.
One could push into the best-at-the-position conversation. The rest are cheaper swings with weekly starter upside. Generally, I advocate for drafting your tight ends late unless the top tier falls in your lap. Otherwise, you should skip the early-round tax and let the value come to you.

The MLB trade deadline showed that Ben Cherington has learned a valuable lesson.
The Pittsburgh Pirates' General Manager has found out the hard way in 2026 that a team cannot go into a season with serious hopes of contending unless it has proven options at the backend of the bullpen.
It's easy to wonder what the Pirates' record might be and where they would be in the standings with just an average corps of relief pitchers. As it is, the Pirates are 57-57 and three games out in the National League wild card race despite their arsonist-like bullpen.
Yet the Pirates are still in the hunt for their first postseason berth since 2015. Cherington tried to bolster those playoff hopes on Monday when he traded for three relievers – the New York Mets' Luke Weaver, the Los Angeles Angels' Kirby Yates and the Miami Marlins' Lake Bachar. That came two days after the Pirates acquired another relief pitcher, Camilo Doval, from the New York Yankees.
Cherington couldn't fill all the Pirates' needs on Monday as he failed to land a starting pitcher and left-handed hitter. However, he took the weakest part of the roster and turned it into what should be a strong point by trading for the four right-handers.

We've reached the point in the offseason where the rumors are more speculation about what will happen as we get closer to the start of training camp — or once camp opens — than they are about things that might happen in the near future. With that framing in mind, here are the latest rumors flying around the NBA — and some advice from Chris Bosh to Victor Wembanyama.
The problem is pretty straightforward: The Dallas Mavericks have 16 players under guaranteed contracts but can only carry 15 into the season. Someone has to be traded or waived.
Klay Thompson and his $17.5 million contract are at the forefront of that, reports Christian Clark of The Athletic.
The Mavericks have explored his trade market but have yet to find a deal, multiple sources with rival teams told The Athletic on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss any potential negotiations... My understanding is that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and still owns a home. The Miami Heat are another team frequently mentioned in NBA circles as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer."
Los Angeles? The Lakers are an unlikely landing spot, unless the Mavericks want two years of Jarred Vanderbilt plus another contract (Dalton Knecht?), but the Lakers have 16 guaranteed contracts on the roster and are hard-capped at the first apron, so they can't take on a lot of salary. The Clippers remain in limbo until the Kawhi Leonard/Aspiration investigation comes to its eventual conclusion — which may well be into the start of the season, or even 2027 — and the fit isn't great anyway.

The ‌goal, they say, is to convince the United States and its allies that containing the crisis is more costly than accommodating Iran's demands over the Strait of Hormuz.
The message from Tehran is that unless ‌Washington accepts a new status quo that gives Iran a greater role in Hormuz, the conflict could spread beyond the Gulf.

Tottenham are interested in signing Cody Gakpo, with Sky Sports reporting the Liverpool forward is among the club's attacking targets this summer.
New Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi is keen to add at least one wide forward after strengthening his midfield and defence, but Liverpool are reluctant to sell the Netherlands international unless they first secure a replacement.
They also report Liverpool are expected to make a formal move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, although the France international would command a huge fee, with PSG valuing the 23-year-old at around £145million.
Gakpo, who has four years remaining on his Liverpool contract, is regarded as one of the more experienced attackers in Andoni Iraola's squad and can also provide cover through the middle while Hugo Ekitike continues his recovery from an Achilles injury.
