We said the Royals were pesky. They came in and proved it in Game 1.
Kansas City beat the Red Sox 3-2 at Fenway Park on Friday night. Not a great start to a series that matters. The Royals had no business being three up through three innings in this ballpark against this team—and yet there they were.
Sonny Gray was the story, and not the good kind. Kansas City touched him for 10 hits across six innings and scored all three of their runs before the third inning was over. Sal Perez's two-out single in the first got past a diving Caleb Durbin down the left field line. Then Carter Jensen's double in the third went high off the Monster, and Vinnie Pasquantino followed by finding the hole right past a shifted-up Nick Sogard to make it 3-0. Three runs. None of them were bloops—decent contact, all of it—just well-placed at the worst possible time.
Gray settled in after the third—and yes, technically this was a quality start, six innings and three earned, which is almost funnier than getting shelled would have been—and the bullpen held Kansas City scoreless in the eighth and ninth, including stranding a runner at third with one out in the top of the ninth. But the damage was already done.

Carter Jensen hit a pair of doubles, drove in a run, and scored a pair to lead the Royals to their second straight victory and first win against Boston since August 6 of last year. The final score was 3-2 in favor of Kansas City.
It was kind of a weird start for Seth Lugo. I attempted to do a reverse jinx on him with the game preview, and he ultimately allowed only two runs in five innings. That's good enough for now. However, looking toward the future, allowing 7 hits and 2 walks, even while striking out 7, in 5 innings is not a recipe for sustained success.
He only threw seven of his pitches tonight and, perhaps most notably, eschewed the slow curve entirely. The curveball and four-seamer were both much more effective than they have been of late. Perhaps this is a sign he's on the rebound.
For a while it seemed like the jinx on Sonny Gray might work, too. Gray came into the game with a 1.74 ERA against the Royals, the best among any pitchers with at least 10 starts against the team. Jensen's first double led off the game. He advanced to third on a groundout from Bobby Witt Jr. and scored on a Salvador Perez single when Gray inexplicably threw Salvy a sinker in instead of the usual breaking stuff away.
In the third inning, it seemed like the Royals might just go ahead and knock out Gray then and there. Isaac Collins led off with an automatic double at 103.2 MPH down the right field line that hopped over the short fence near the pole. Carter followed up by smashing one at 102.6 off the monster in left to trade places with Collins. Bobby flew out to center at 103.3 to advance Carter to third and Vinnie Pasquantino hit one at 102.4 to give the Royals their final run. Sadly, Salvy grounded into a double play to end the inning and that was the last time KC would score.

The Charlotte Knights stumbled to an 11-4 loss to the Buffalo Bisons in a game that remained competitive for five innings before spiraling wildly out of control.
Adisyn Coffey took the mound as an opener for Charlotte, making just his third start of the season. It quickly became the Lenyn Sosa revenge game. The Braves bought themselves some margin for error in avoiding certain catastrophic outcomes by winning Friday's opener of this four-game Philly series and the first of seven games against the division rivals in the next 10 for Atlanta. That said, they could still easily get themselves into trouble in the standings through these games against the Phillies. They still have a 4 game buffer with only 5 games left against Philly, and with a two game swing for each game effectively, even just winning another two of the five would be a perfectly fine outcome, maintaining a 3 game lead into mid-September. Anything less than that gets fairly dangerous, however, as going 1-4 in these next 5 games against Philly would leave them clinging to a 1 game lead in the division (assuming the teams perform equivalently in the interluding series. Sunday's pitching matchup would be a good one for Atlanta to take advantage of, with Tyler Mahle having a bunch of success in an Atlanta uniform so far and Aaron Nola having a fairly middling season.

Every baseball fan is familiar with the scam known as the shell game— after all, it's present, in more innocuous form, in the cap shuffle ubiquitous to scoreboards. Tonight Zack Wheeler offered the visiting Braves a shell game, tempting them with three baserunners through three at-bats… but when the Braves selected their shell, there weren't very many runs underneath.
The start was rather subpar for the home crowd, with Wheeler allowing a pair of singles to the first two Braves, then walking Matt Olson to load the bases with none away. But a pop fly and a strikeout (aided by a canny ABS challenge from J.T. Realmuto) put him just a single out away from pulling off the great escape. Ozzie Albies flew out to center, and the Braves trudged back to the dugout with the dreaded ****** LETIGER (No Outs, Bases Loaded, Ending in Team Incapable of Getting Easy Runs, it's a real term) nipping at their heels.
But the Phillies would give Atlanta starter Martin Pérez a rougher start. Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner worked walks to start off the game, with the former dashing for third on a fly out from Bryce Harper, and slipping right past the tag. A single to right from Luis Arraez scored him, and the bases were then loaded on a walk of Alec Bohm. Realmuto walked to bring in a run (an ABS challenge on ball four proved fruitless for the visitors). The inning ended when Ronald Acuña Jr, looking truly superb, leapt into the air to turn a line drive from Bryson Stott into out number three.

After a 5 run first inning, Kansas City had a multi-run lead for over half the game. The Marlins kept chipping away inning after inning to eventually win 9-6.
It was a very exciting beginning to the game tonight, though it was both the good and bad type of exciting. Noah Cameron had a breaking ball hit the back foot of the leadoff hitter to start the game. Then Otto Lopez hit a hard groundball down the third baseline and into the corner that John Rave misplayed into a triple and an RBI. Kyle Stowers was up third and the infield was in. He immediately hit a little single up the middle to make the game 2-0. Cameron started to settle in after that and got out of the first. In the bottom half the Royals decided to show Miami that anything they could do KC could do better. Carter Jensen led the game off by pulling a solo home run and cutting the lead in half. Bobby Witt managed to reach base with a single before Jac Caglianone mirrored the triple in the top half of the inning only down the first baseline and into the corner for a double. It was enough with Witt's speed to tie the game up 2-2. That was not enough for Salvador Perez however, so he also turned on a ball and hit his 18th bomb of the year to score two and give the Royals the lead. After which Vinnie Pasquantino flew out, Nick Loftin worked a walk, and the newly returned Michael Massey drove a double to right center for a 5-2 lead.

That was a long inning for Eury Perez ending with 34 pitches thrown, and the Marlins even got the bullpen moving a bit before the end of the initial frame. It was a great start after the last two games where the Royals got blown out, but the crazy first was a long way from the end of this one. Cameron, after those first three batters, took down the next 8 in a row before Miami got to him in the 3rd. With two outs and no one on, Stowers got his second RBI knock of the night by hitting a solo homer to left center. It looked like he may have struck out on a check swing the pitch before the home run, but it was called no swing on appeal.
In the bottom of the 4th, with Eury still hanging in there, Carter Jensen tagged another mistake and lined it 110mph into the Royals bullpen. It was his second multi-homer game of his career and brought him to and then above the 20 homer mark. Not bad for your first full season in the bigs. Royals lead 6-3.

After a late scratch of the Rockies' starting pitcher, the Braves were hoping to secure a series win against the Colorado bullpen with Martin Perez on the mound.

Last night, Brady House hit one of the more impressive home runs I have seen at Nationals Park. In the third inning, House absolutely unloaded on a 99 MPH fastball from Eury Perez. He sent it on to the concourse an estimated 474 feet, well at least at first. It was a perfect swing and an absolutely **** anic blast.
There have been plenty of ups and downs in Brady House's first 145 games as a big leaguer. However, swings like that are what keeps fans dreaming. House has not had the same sort of rapid improvement that we have seen from some hitters, but he has certainly improved. His chase rate is down 3%, his barrel rate is up over 8% and his walk rate is up over 4%.
These are all important steps in the right direction for a talented but raw hitter. A big reason for these improvements is House having a more defined plan of attack during at bats and before games. After the game, House talked about going into his cage sessions with more of a purpose instead of just swinging to get reps.
Blake Butera said that he expects to see more power from House as he develops that approach. As we saw last night, raw power is not the problem here. House hits the ball hard consistently, and can hit some absolute moon shots. He has all the raw tools to hit 30 homers, he just needs more refinement. Since he has come back from the minors, he has taken steps in the right direction in that regard.
Speaking of that moon shot, the distance of the homer became a source of slight controversy. On August 13, dLocal (NASDAQ:DLO) reported second-quarter results that were hard to poke holes in. Total payment volume hit $17.7 billion, up 92% year over year, its best pace in more than four years. Revenue climbed 56% to $399.7 million, and gross profit reached a record $127.2 million. For a company whose whole business is moving money faster and cheaper across emerging markets, this was about as strong a quarter as it gets.
Behind the headline number is a business that keeps getting stickier with the merchants it already has. Net revenue retention landed at 153%, the fifth straight quarter above 140%, and TPV retention hit 188%, meaning existing clients are adding countries, payment methods, and products rather than just processing more of the same volume. CEO Pedro Arnt called it "the highest growth rate since the first quarter of 2022."
Brazil and Argentina did the heavy lifting on profitability, with gross profit hitting records of $40 million and $20 million, powered by ride-hailing, travel and e-commerce merchants ramping up. Local-to-local transactions, where money moves within a single country rather than across borders, climbed to 61% of volume, up 6 percentage points from the first quarter, as ride-hailing and on-demand delivery merchants scaled fast.
dLocal is also pushing beyond core processing. Buy now, pay later is now live in eight markets, and the company plans to launch dMore, a merchant of record service that takes on the legal and tax headaches of entering new countries. It's also landing new categories of customers, including artificial intelligence companies and digital **** et exchanges, on top of a base that already includes four of the largest ride-hailing companies in the world.
Not every market moved in the same direction. Mexico's revenue grew 64% year over year, but sequential gross profit slipped as pricing tiers on large merchants matured and dLocal struggled to bring local processing costs down as a share of volume. CFO Guillermo Perez flagged that the company expects upward pressure on its effective tax rate starting in 2027 as countries adopt the OECD's Pillar 2 minimum tax framework, though he said it's too early to size the impact.
