Borussia Dortmund are preparing for a massive top-of-the-table showdown against Bayern Munich this weekend as both sides look to break their current deadlock at the summit. Head coach Niko Kovac has acknowledged the significant threat posed by the record champions, specifically highlighting the form of their star forward.
Kovac has offered high praise for Kane as Dortmund prepare to face a Bayern side led by the newly crowned Ballon d'Or winner. The England captain has continued his devastating form in Germany, prompting the Dortmund boss to recognize the sheer scale of the task facing his defense on Saturday. Kovac noted that the striker's recent accolades speak for themselves, emphasizing that he has successfully reached a new level since moving to the Bundesliga.
"There's no need to say a word about him. The mere fact that he received this ****** le says everything about him. He was already a top player in England. To take another leap forward now is sensational," said Kovac on the club's official website
The stakes could not be higher for this edition of Der Klassiker, with both teams currently tied on 17 points after seven matchdays. While Bayern hold the top spot due to a superior goal difference, Dortmund have the opportunity to leapfrog their rivals. Kovac believes the current competitiveness at the top is a breath of fresh air for the league. However, the coach warned that excitement does not equate to an easy path to victory. He demanded absolute focus from his squad, stressing that only their best football would suffice in Munich.
"This certainly makes things a lot more exciting than in recent years. But that doesn't make it any easier, because FC Bayern Munich is undoubtedly the best of the best—not just in Germany, but also in Europe. We have to play at the very highest level. But we're Dortmund—we have our own standards, and we intend to live up to them," Kovac insisted.

June Jones, the cutting-edge coach who brought the run-and-shoot offense to Hawaii and led the Rainbow Warriors to their greatest era and an undefeated regular season that catapulted them all the way to the Sugar Bowl, died on Thursday. He was 73.
Hawaii's football program in a statement did not list a cause of death for Jones, who coached the Atlanta Falcons for three seasons in the 1990s before his stint at Hawaii. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser cited a close family friend as saying Jones had entered hospice two weeks ago in his native Oregon.
"Coach Jones was a father figure, a mentor, and a visionary who revolutionized the game," said Timmy Chang, the current Hawaii coach who set the NCAA record for career passing yards (since broken) under Jones. "He believed in a young kid from Hawaii and gave me the opportunity of a lifetime to run his offense."
Hawaii was one of three schools where Jones played quarterback in college, but it was his decision to transfer to Portland State that shaped the rest of his football career.
He played under Mouse Davis, who is largely credited with bringing to the big-time an offense that featured four receivers who adjusted their routes on the fly, rarely ran the football and, most of all, moved fast.

After his team's first loss of the 2026-27 season last month, Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti received a fair bit of heat for how the Bianconeri totally lost its balance against Sassuolo. After their second loss of the season, Sunday's 3-0 defeat at the hand of surprise package Lazio at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, the heat has seemingly been turned up to a degree in which Spalletti hasn't seen since the final weeks of the 2025-26 campaign when Champions League qualification was slipping away.
And it sounds like, in some ways, Spalletti could see a little bit of the writing on the wall.
Amongst the many critiques that Spalletti — who was suspended for Sunday's loss as a result of his red card last weekend against Cagliari — had of his team's performance during his post-game media responsibilities, It was an answer to his current relationship with the team that raised plenty of eyebrows. Spalletti responded to the question "Until yesterday, I thought I could say yes, then today I probably don't know …" — something that will surely fuel speculation about just how much longer he might have on the Juventus sideline if his team continues to play the way they did against Lazio on Sunday night.
The quote, via multiple outlets, in English is as follows:
"If instead of improving we get worse, I have to do in-depth ****** ysis, especially on myself. Does the team still follow me? Until yesterday, I thought I could say yes, then today I probably don't know. I have a good relationship with them, I always want to share, that's how I am."

Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson had eight catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns in the Week 1 win over the Green Bay Packers, according to ESPN.com.
Why it Matters: It was the first time since Dec. 22, 2024, that Jefferson had two touchdown receptions in a game. In fact, he had just two TDs all of last season. Last season's struggles caused him to slip in fantasy drafts to the midway portion of the first round, and he could absolutely outplay that. His two scores came with Carson Wentz under center, so we'll have a little bit of cautious optimism to see how he and Kyler Murray (concussion) connect when he's fit to return. Jefferson is a must-start every week, including against the Chicago Bears in Week 2.

49ers quietly made massive Kyle Shanahan head coaching job decision this offseason originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The San Francisco 49ers began their 2026 NFL season overseas against the Los Angeles Rams and won with a dominant 27-7 victory in Australia.
It was a great way to start the season for the 49ers fanbase, and the next day, the fans got some great news about the leader who was a big help in this Week 1 win.
According to Tom Pelissero of The Ringer and Netflix Sports, the 49ers quietly signed Kyle Shanahan to a long-term contract extension to remain as their head coach well beyond the 2027 season, as his previous deal indicated.

Sep. 11—CHAMPAIGN — The fallout from the Michigan-Western Michigan fiasco includes the Big Ten's decision to add more transparency to replay discussions.
That's a change from the earlier, when the Big Ten said it would use expanded network access on replay only for Friday games.
Now, starting Saturday, all replay reviews will be available to the networks airing the games. Duh. The Big Ten could have saved itself all sorts of trouble had replay rules been different at Michigan Stadium last Saturday night before the Wolverines avoided an upset loss, winning 13-12 on a second-chance Hail Mary.
"Ironically, last year I think it was the ACC that did live replay," Illinois coach Bret Bielema said Thursday at the Smith Center. "I know in spring meetings they told us they were going to have a camera in the Big Ten office."
Illinois has two Friday night games scheduled later in the season, so that bit of news was already on Bielema's radar.

The Denver Broncos have named their team captains for the 2026 season and, in doing so, have followed the same approach that they took in the offseason: sticking with what worked.
The Broncos made few changes to their roster this offseason, believing the group in place was good enough to win a Super Bowl and wanted to keep as much of that intact as possible. The same can be said for the team captains.
The Broncos chose the same eight team captains that they had last season, with one addition. Special teams ace and reserve safety Devon Key was added as a special teams captain.
"He was a[n All-Pro] special teamer a year ago, and I think it's the respect of his teammates," coach Sean Payton said of Key being voted a captain. "He's someone that he'll play on defense as well, but just his production I think and his consistency."
Denver quarterback Bo Nix echoed his coach's remarks.

It's been a busy last twelve months for Craig Carton. Following the cancellation of his FS1 program, Breakfast Ball, in July, many speculated about where Carton's path would lead after his network television debut. The results of that journey to today shouldn't be surprising.
First, Carton remained a partner with FOX and worked with Red Seat Ventures to develop a one-hour daily program **** led The Craig Carton Show. His return to WFAN followed, with the official announcement coming in early December. Earlier this year, Carton added another layer to his growing media presence by teaming with Lil Wayne for The Joint Venture podcast. Beginning today, Carton elevates that initial project by bringing The Craig Carton Show to a rebranded and growing OutKick digital platform.
"I have been a frequent guest on OutKick as well as FOX News. So, there's some familiarity that I have with them, and they have with me," said Carton about the early discussions surrounding bringing The Craig Carton Show to OutKick. "I was a guest with Dan [Dakich] about six months ago. Afterwards, they reached out and inquired about my deal with FOX expiring. The interest was mutual."
With Carton's FOX contract coming to an end earlier this summer, the network made an offer to keep him in tow along with The Craig Carton Show podcast. However, the network allowed Carton to retain the podcast and shop it around to other distributors outside of his prior arrangement with SportsGrid.
"I had the ability to go look for other partners, but they [OutKick] had an interest in me. It sort of came together at the same time. I have great respect for FOX as a company. They've been great to me on the sports side. Then to take that and evolve our relationship under the FOX News umbrella was a no-brainer," explained Carton, who co-owns the IP for The Craig Carton Show with FOX. "We're partners in every sense of the word."

Saturday evening brought big news: Vikings legend Harrison Smith, who never officially announced his retirement, is coming back for a 15th season with the franchise that drafted him in the first round back in 2012.
The fan reaction to that news has been almost entirely positive. Smith is an all-time great who has played at a high level across several different eras of Vikings football. About a month into this season, he'll pass Carl Eller and Fred ****** to move into third on the franchise's games played leaderboard, trailing only Jim Marshall and Mick Tingelhoff. He's an obvious Ring of Honor lock with a real chance to end up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
And Smith's return isn't just about legacy. With his experience and instincts and communication abilities in Brian Flores' check-heavy defense, Smith is a big addition to the Vikings' roster right now, even at 37 years old. He can clearly still play, as we saw in his dominant performance against the Lions last Christmas Day.
Amidst the excitement, there have been a few Vikings fans who have pushed back. Their specific complaints have to do with the contract the team gave Smith for his 15th season. It's a one-year, $12.25 million deal that has incentives up to $16.25 million if Minnesota wins the Super Bowl. For some, that price tag is too steep for a 37-year-old safety.
There were enough of those tweets that a former longtime teammate of Smith's took notice. Anthony Barr, a first-round pick two years after Smith who played alongside him for nine seasons, took to X/Twitter to put those fans on blast late on Saturday night after a couple posts about his UCLA Bruins' Week 1 win over Cal.

Christian Gonzalez Delivers Telling Response To Patriots Trade Question originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The uncertainty surrounding Christian Gonzalez and the New England Patriots has grown enough that the star cornerback is now being asked directly about a possible trade.
Gonzalez did not indicate that he wants one. When asked Saturday whether he would request a trade amid his unresolved contract negotiations, Gonzalez offered a careful response that kept his immediate focus on New England.
"I'm here right now," Gonzalez said, per Patriots on CLNS. "I'll always be where my feet are and do what I gotta do."
That was not the sweeping declaration Patriots fans might have wanted to hear, but it also was not a threat or an attempt to force his way out of Foxboro. Gonzalez remains with the Patriots. He continues to practice. And despite his frustration with the lack of progress toward a long-term extension, the 24-year-old is publicly presenting himself as a member of the team.

A "battle-tested" Coco Gauff showed grit to keep her bid for a second US Open ******* le alive with victory over Paula Badosa in the second round.
Fourth seed Gauff had lost her past two matches against former world number two Badosa, but showed impressive composure in a tough encounter.
The American was twice a break up in the second set and served for the match at 6-5, only to put a volley into the net to send it to a tie-break.
After a quick yell of "why?" towards her team, Gauff reset and was solid to close out victory on a second match point.
Gauff's improved second serve was on show throughout - she won 57% of points behind it and committed just five double faults.

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has expressed regret over not bringing Katie Taylor to GAA headquarters earlier, following extraordinary ticket demand for the Irish fighter's farewell contest at Croke Park.
The 40-year-old will fulfil a lifelong dream when she takes to the ring in Dublin on Saturday night, seeking to become a three-time undisputed world champion against the undefeated Flora Pili.
A sell-out crowd of 80,000 is set to gather for the pioneering athlete's final bout prior to retirement, though Hearn remains confident that vast numbers of additional tickets could easily have been sold.
Previous concerns regarding financial viability, substantial security expenses, and complex logistics had dissuaded the promoter from organising a Croke Park show headlined by Taylor—a hesitation he now reflects on with disappointment.
Hearn said: "If Croker would have originally gone 'Yes, this is going to be massive', I would have gone 'Wow' and we would have done it.

Manchester City have reached that familiar point in a transfer window where the story is about quality, timing and nerve. Deadline day tends to bring theatre, but for City the picture appears sharper than most. The priorities are clear, the names are substantial, and the sense from The Athletic is that Enzo Maresca's club are pressing hard to finish business that could shape the tone of the season.
For all the noise of the wider market, the relevant line for City is straightforward. "City will aim to push through a deal with Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez, who they had identified as a key target before the end of last season." That sentence carries weight. It speaks to long-term planning rather than impulse, and it frames Fernandez not as an opportunistic late-window raid but as a midfielder City have been tracking with purpose.
The second live issue is in attack. "City will also hope to complete a move for Everton winger Iliman Ndiaye, after a £60m deal with £5m in add-ons was agreed in principle on Monday evening." In the compressed language of deadline day, that reads as significant progress. When a fee is agreed in principle and a medical is scheduled, the transfer has usually moved beyond flirtation and into the final administrative bend.
Those two pursuits, Fernandez and Ndiaye, reveal much about where City believe the squad stands. There has been talent added, there has been movement out, and there has also been that slightly untidy feel that often comes when a powerful squad is being remodelled in real time. The challenge for Maresca is to weld all of this into a **** le-chasing whole quickly.
If City complete the Fernandez deal, it will be the headline move, because elite central midfielders alter the rhythm of teams. The report notes that Chelsea set "a public deadline of August 14 for bids", yet the matter has remained alive. More tellingly, "Fernandez has been left out of Chelsea's squad for games against Luton Town and Brighton." Those absences inevitably intensify the feeling that something material is developing.

The initial 53-man rosters are set as preseason has concluded.
So, who emerged from this summer's worth of work looking better entering Week 1? Who isn't inspiring confidence?
Yahoo Sports' Frank Schwab, Eric Edholm and Jori Epstein each pick one top winner and one top loser of the preseason.
Edholm's winner: I'll go with the Dallas Cowboys.
Although you could argue nothing dramatic has happened since the start of training camp, perhaps that's part of the reason why. The Cowboys have begun folding in their new defensive talent, and the early returns have been promising. The offense has picked up where it left off last season, and getting George Pickens' contract situation relatively settled has helped make that happen. Even Joe Milton has had some eye-opening moments in his bid to be Dak Prescott's backup. They've also had zero major injuries, which is always a win. The Cowboys look like a playoff team, even if feel-good camps and preseasons can sometimes be fool's gold.

Nasser Hussain has criticised the umpires for curtailing the third day of the second Test between England and Pakistan in sunny conditions.
Saturday's play was heavily affected by the weather as rain fell in London, with only 24.5 overs possible amid a series of heavy showers as England swelled their lead to 357 runs.
The players were taken from the field for the final time just before 10 past five local time, with stumps called due to "bad light" at 6.30pm BST – with another hour of play in theory possible.
The decision of umpires Paul Reiffel and Allahuddien Paleker was met with boos from parts of the sparse crowd that remained with bright sunshine hitting the ground soon afterwards.
Play was abandoned at 6.30pm BST (PA)

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced their first 11 cuts on Friday night and on Saturday added two more as the team works to trim down to 53 players by the Sunday deadline. One of Saturday's cuts was outside linebacker Jamin Davis, a former first-round pick of the Washington Commanders.
Davis had been working as the team's No. 5 outside linebacker since the team signed him but faced stiff competition with a stacked group of edge defenders locked in on the Steelers roster. Pittsburgh is projected to keep T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig and Jack Sawyer, with no room for a fifth outside linebacker.
In addition to Davis, the Steelers also released wide receiver Levi Wentz. Like outside linebacker, wide receiver is mostly set for the Steelers with DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr., Germie Bernard, Roman Wilson, Ben Skownorek and Kaden Wetjen rounding out the depth chart.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Motor neurone disease has not stopped Jai Arrow's attempt to bring up a career milestone in Australia's National Rugby League.
Earlier this week, the NRL allowed an exception to its rules to allow the veteran forward a chance to be on the field for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in his 99th and 100th rugby league games for the club, if only for the first few seconds of the game.
Arrow was subsequently named co-captain and led South Sydney onto the field through a guard of honor for Saturday's game against the Gold Coast ****** ans Saturday, in an emotional scene that brought tears to players and fans alike.
The 31-year-old was visibly moved, frequently looking to the sky as he embraced several teammates while "You'll Never Walk Alone" played around the stadium.
As the referee signaled the start of the match, a brief pause allowed Arrow to be substituted without taking part in any play.

The high school football season kicks off this week with 16 coaches making their debuts in Greater San Antonio. About half are veteran coaches who landed at a new school. The others are getting a chance to lead a program for the first time.
Regardless of their experience, each job has its challenges. Here's a look at the challenges each coach faces at his new position:
Myles Duelm, Madison
Duelm is taking the reins of a program that lost one of the city's top football players to graduation. Wide receiver Jordan Clay is now at the University of Washington after spending all four years of his high school career at Madison. Although Duelm is a first-year head coach, he has plenty of familiarity with the region. He was previously Reagan's offensive coordinator and also worked at Brandeis.
Vernon Hughes, Judson
Hughes takes over a team that hasn't had a winning season since 2021, which is a shocker considering the Rockets' reputation as San Antonio's most decorated football program. Hughes takes over for Mark Soto, a Judson alum who played for and won a state championship under D.W. Rutledge in 1988 but was unable to restore the Rockets to state prominence from the sidelines. The Rockets are never short on talent. Hughes' task will be utilizing that talent to get the Rockets back on track in one of Region IV's toughest Class 6A districts.
Matt McKinney, Harlan
McKinney is tasked with leading one of the city's top 6A programs in his first season as a head coach. He will look to sustain the success the Hawks had under Eddie Salas, who led Harlan to the postseason in all eight of its varsity seasons. While McKinney is in a new role, he is no stranger to the program after serving as Harlan's offensive coordinator since the school opened.

Rowser, like many other NCAA athletes who started their careers in 2022, has been given an extra year of eligibility courtesy of a court ruling. Rowser played one year at Campbell, one at New Mexico State, and was in Tempe for the last two seasons. He has a combined 317 tackles.
Rowser totaled 162 tackles in his two ASU seasons, with a high of 98 coming in 2024.
He was not selected in the NFL draft, but did get a mini-camp invite from the Seattle Seahawks.

It wasn't always pretty. Things didn't go all that smoothly, either. Nor was Saturday's match all that ideal.
But considering New Mexico United was playing on the road and two time zones away — and with only 10 players on the pitch for the final 60-plus minutes — Dennis Sanchez and his squad weren't too disappointed about leaving Virginia with something. Anything, really.
In this case: one point. Forget about three.
"It was a really gritty performance," the manager said after the 0-0 draw at Loudoun United FC. "... (The players) dug in. They stayed together. They worked their ******* off for each other."
New Mexico needed to after Joseph Melto was sent off in the 31st minute for picking up his second yellow card.

The Astros have recalled RHP Kai-Wei Teng from Triple A Sugar Land today after optioning LHP Bryan King to Triple A last night.
Teng, 27, is 5-6 this season with a 4.35 ERA and 1.35 WHIP for Houston across 25 games, including 10 starts. In 68.1 IP with the big league club, Teng has 67 K and has allowed 10 HR.
Teng was optioned to Triple-A following a rough start on 6/27 vs. Detroit, and was experiencing arm fatigue. He would later be placed on the IL with a right knee sprain.
Teng had a brief recall at the end of July in which he pitched in two games for the Astros, allowing 2 ER in 4.1 IP and collecting a win. He was optioned back to Triple-A after his appearance 7/24.
Teng has posted a 3.48 ERA in 10.1 IP at Triple-A Sugar Land across 7 appearances this season.

I like doing statistical ****** ysis for two primary reasons. There are two main biases that it combats and we are all prey to those biases at one time or another. The first form of bias is what I would call immediacy bias. A great example of that is the string of short starts that the Astros are currently going through. The temptation is to ****** ume that this has been constant throughout the season when that is almost never the case. There are ebbs and flows to these things, so looking at overall numbers can help us combat that bias.
The second bias is a local bias. We watch the Astros. Some of us watch them religiously. So, when we are watching one team 162 times a season and the other teams maybe a handful of times, it is easy to look at what your local group is doing and ****** ume that it is either really good or really bad. We simply don't have anything to compare it to. This becomes important when we are looking at relative strengths and weaknesses of a team. This can come into play in terms of game to game strategy or long-term questions about how the team should be structured.
We call this the lab because I like to start with observations that can be formed into a testable hypothesis. In this case, the hypothesis is that the Astros overly rely on their bullpen for innings because their starters do not go deep enough into games. We can test that simply by comparing them with the rest of the American League to see if that is true comparatively. We will start with the starting pitchers only in terms of innings pitched and ERA.
