GREEN BAY – Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur is fired up for the start of training camp.
At his news conference before the first practice of the season, he said players know how eager he is to see what kind of team the Packers will be.
"I told the team yesterday, this is as excited as I've ever been coaching this football team in my time here," LaFleur said July 29. "And it's because of the people we have in the room. I mean, players, coaches, support staff, everybody. So, we're just ready to go."
When asked about his long-term expectations for the team, he said his thoughts were elsewhere.
"I'll be honest with you, I'm not even focused on that," he said. "Like, I want to focus on the day-to-day and just push these guys, and they push each other to be the best we can be.

After being limited to just three hits in a shutout loss last night, Milwaukee bounced back in a big way. Logan Henderson was terrific, Jackson Chourio and William Contreras each had multi-hit games, Luis Lara had three RBIs, and all nine starters recorded at least one hit as the Brewers cruised to an 8-2 win over the San Francisco Giants.
It only took the Brewers two batters to put a runner in scoring position, as Brice Turang and Jackson Chourio opened the game with back-to-back singles off Giants starter Landen Roupp. William Contreras grounded into a force at second, putting runners on the corners for Christian Yelich, who hit into an inning-ending double play. Brewers starter Logan Henderson matched Roupp in the bottom of the first, working around a pair of singles to keep San Francisco off the board. Both starters had even smoother second innings, retiring the side in order.
Roupp allowed the game's first run in the top of the third thanks to an extremely Brewers rally: Cooper Pratt drew a walk, David Hamilton laid down a sacrifice bunt, Brice Turang hit a grounder that moved Hamilton to third, and Jackson Chourio drove in Pratt with a two-out single.

The Seattle Seahawks have a lot going for them as the 2026 NFL season creeps closer.
Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox labeled the Seahawks' defensive line as the team's biggest strength prior to the start of this year's preseason.
"The Seahawks were regularly able to pressure opposing quarterbacks despite blitzing just 19.3 percent of the time, the seventh-lowest rate in the NFL," Knox said. "Seattle's defensive line will enter 2026 largely unchanged. While edge-defender Boye Mafe was replaced by Dante Fowler Jr., key standouts Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy II, Jarran Reed, and DeMarcus Lawrence are all back for another run."
The Seahawks also have a strong wide receiver room consisting of AP Offensive Player of the Year Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Rashid Shaheed and Cooper Kupp, as well as a top-tier secondary including second-team All-Pro cornerback Devon Witherspoon, Nick Emmanwori, and Josh Jobe. Ohio State has inked a jersey patch sponsorship deal with JPMorgan Chase, sources tell On3. The Buckeyes become the latest college football brand to add a jersey patch ahead of the 2026 season.
The deal spans the full athletic department and all 36 varsity sports. The investment also provides new resources to support Ohio State athletes through NIL opportunities, enhances the Buckeyes' overall competitive success and facilitates academic partnerships across the university.
Ohio State becomes one of the biggest college football brands to date to add a jersey patch to its uniform. The JPMorgan Chase logo will sit above the Big Ten patch on the front of Ohio State's jerseys.
JPMorgan Chase has a longstanding relationship with central Ohio, as one of Columbus' largest private employers. The firm has brought on more than 1,700 Ohio State alumni in the past five years, too. The deal was brokered by Learfield.

Sugano (10-4) struck out five over 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on a pair of homers — Christian Yelich's 413-foot leadoff drive in the first inning and Brice Turang's 434-foot blast in the sixth. Sugano was making his second start since coming off the injured list after missing three weeks due to back spasms.
Milwaukee brought the tying run to the plate after Andrew Vaughn and Jake Bauers started the ninth inning with consecutive singles. Jordan Romano regrouped from there by getting Joey Ortiz to pop up, striking out Gary Sánchez struck out and retiring Yelich on a fly to right.
Romano picked up his eighth save in 10 opportunities.

Notre Dame added another 4-star prospect to its 2027 recruiting class, as Illinois defensive tackle Brayden Parks made his verbal on Thursday.
His commitment now gives the Irish 23 total commitments in the class, an elite group. According to the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings, Notre Dame has now moved up to the No. 2 spot behind Texas A&M. The difference here is that that Aggies have three more players in their class, and has a slightly higher average commitment rank at 91.08 vs. 91.00.
The Oregon Ducks are right behind the Irish, less than a point away, making it a virtually three-headed race for the top spot. Notre Dame has the most room to add players, but the majority to top prospects have already made their commitments. There could be some a late bloomer or two that they go after, but this could be it for the cycle.
Regardless of where the Irish end up in the rankings, head coach Marcus Freeman has once again managed to bring plenty of talent to an already elite team.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters Thursday the Protect College Sports Act is not likely to reach the floor for a vote before the session ends in two weeks.
The bipartisan bill introduced in May by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) addresses a wide-range of issues in college sports, from eligibility and transfer rules to regulations for compensating players.
The bill, which advanced out of committee last month, has drawn support from the NCAA and many Division I conferences, but not the Big Ten and SEC, the wealthiest and most powerful leagues. Advancing through committee markup is the furthest a college sports bill has made it in Congress; a House bill called the SCORE Act advanced through committee last year but never got to the floor for a vote.
Big Ten and SEC officials have been working with Cruz, Cantwell and other co-sponsors in recent weeks to modify the bill. The two conferences have a variety of issues with the bill, including spending limits it would impose on player compensation and restrictions on conference expansion.
Lawmakers have said there has been some progress on those negotiations, but the bigger issue appears to be the legislative calendar. The senate has only two weeks left in the session before going on summer recess starting Aug. 8.

Arsenal have signed "extremely versatile attacking player" Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for £34m.
The 24-year-old Greece international has joined the Premier League champions on what they describe as a "long-term contract".
Tzolis scored 43 goals and provided 45 ******* ists in 108 appearances for Club Brugge.

Jul. 22—A couple of weeks ago, a representative from the Big Sky Conference reached out to Pam Parks to prepare her for this Saturday's event at Northern Quest Resort & Casino, when Parks will be formally inducted into the league's Hall of Fame.
That prompted Parks, now 74, to reflect on her career in athletics, nearly all of it spent at Eastern Washington University..
"I am very honored, but I really go, 'why'?" Parks said last week. "I wasn't that successful."
But, Parks conceded, she did go into administration, coach volleyball at two Big Sky schools and experience success, so she does "kind of get it."
Others, though, are more convinced.

With the second semi-final set to kick off soon, it would be a good idea to talk about what a combined XI would look like. England and Argentina both boast their fair share of talent, but lack options in several positions (often the same ones), making a lineup like this especially challenging. Still, here is what we've got.
Note: The goal of making this XI is to have a plausible lineup that could actually work. So you won't see six attacking players and zero midfielders included just to see more talent on the pitch. Even so, changes have been made and some liberties taken to get certain players on the pitch at the same time.
What a nightmare. Selecting three or four attackers from this bunch is a harrowing experience. There are two schools of thought, neither of which will satisfy everyone. So here are both of the options:
One: Positions? Who cares about them?
This orientation puts all the best players on each team on the pitch, without regard for how they fit together or how they should function.

The Chargers have all the tools they need to boast one of the best offenses in the league.
They hold one of the most talented quarterbacks in Justin Herbert, a young and dynamic running back in Omarion Hampton and an elite route runner in Ladd McConkey.
That trio is expected to do plenty of damage and establish itself as one of, if not the, best QB-RB-WR trios in the NFL. They'll have the opportunity to prove that this season, after being ranked outside the top 10 entering the year.
According to Jared Dubin of CBS Sports, Herbert, Hampton and McConkey sit just outside the top 10, at No. 11.

NFL.com's Bucky Brooks named Jeanty to his All-Breakout team for the upcoming season, highlighting a more favorable situation in Las Vegas as a potential catalyst for his expected surge.
After suffering through a frustrating rookie campaign that saw him fall short of 1,000 ground yards while averaging just 3.7 a pop, Jeanty could make a serious run at the 2026 rushing ****** le with new Raiders coach Klint Kubiak implementing a zone-based running game that will showcase the second-year pro's balance, body control and burst on the edges.
Jeanty will benefit from playing in a Raiders offense with more talent. Rushes up the middle will be made easier for him with star center Tyler Linderbaum in town. News broke on Monday that second-year wide receiver Terrence Smith will not be with the program in the fall. The reasons for his departure are still unclear at the moment.
247Sports' Eliot Clough reported that Smith will no longer be on Iowa's roster this fall.
Smith was a three-star signee in Iowa's 2025 recruiting class. The 6-foot-3, 187-pound receiver was the 537th-best prospect, the No. 79 wide receiver and the No. 14 player in the state of Illinois in the 2025 class, per the 247Sports composite rankings.
Smith was a big recruiting win for Kirk Ferentz and company. His departure leaves a hole for the Hawkeyes to fill this season.

Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf is reporting that Ajax are set to bring in Diego Pugno from Juventus on loan. The Amsterdam club have also agreed a purchase option of just €1m with Juventus for the 20-year-old. It appears that, initially at least, Pugno will play for Jong Ajax in the second tier of Dutch football. The young Juventus forward looks to be the latest signing by Jordi Cruijff who has been incredibly active at Ajax already this summer.
Pugno has spent most of his time in recent seasons with the Juventus youth teams, although he did play one game for the side during the 2024/2025 season. Sanchez will get the start in his home stadium with the All-Star game being held at Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park.

Switzerland manager Murat Yakin said his side’s World Cup quarter-final was destroyed by the new mistaken identity rule that led to Breel Embolo being sent off in their 3-1 defeat to Argentina.
Embolo was shown a second yellow card when, initially, Leandro Paredes had been cautioned for a challenge on him – only for referee Joao Pinheiro to review the incident and conclude the Switzerland striker had dived.
But Yakin argued it should never have got that far by saying that Paredes should not have been booked for his challenge and that Embolo was left “shattered” by his red card.
Switzerland had levelled through Dan Ndoye minutes before Embolo was dismissed and went to lose to extra-time goals from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez.

The ninth stage of the Tour de France on Sunday is being shortened due to a heatwave, race organizers said.
A red heat alert level has been declared for the Corrèze department, through which the stage is due to pass.
As a result, the stage through the Massif Central will be shortened to 155.5 kilometres from the originally planned 185.5km, a statement said on Saturday.
Temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius are expected at the start in Malemort and 35 degrees at the finish in Ussel.

That includes the Los Angeles Lakers, who looked like they were going to cruise to a dominant win to begin NBA Summer League play in Sin City on Friday.
But the OKC Thunder cranked up the temperature down the stretch, trimming a 20-point deficit to just nine with 2:23 remaining. And the man who caught fire was Bennett Stirtz, who torched the nets for eight points during the fourth quarter.
Los Angeles stayed cool under pressure, though. It ultimately earned a 96-84 win thanks in large part to Adou Thiero, who stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points, four rebounds, four ****** ists, three steals and two blocks.

We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Friday, July 10, is 65 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 65 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 1965 season for the Cardinals.
The 1965 season started out well and then was disastrous. They lost the opener 34-27 to the Philadelphia Eagles but then rattled off four straight wins to improve to 4-1. They won only one other time, losing their final six games to finish the year 5-9.

Australian sprint phenom Gout Gout will miss the rest of the track and field season, including August's World U20 Championships, after tearing a left hamstring tendon.
"I'm very disappointed but I have no other possibility but to accept the situation," was posted on Gout's social media. "I understand this is part of athletics. My focus now will be on my rehab in the coming weeks and months and ensuring I come back in 2027 better and stronger and faster."
Gout, 18, is the U20 world record holder in the 200m.
He clocked 19.67 seconds at the Australian Championships on April 12, breaking the U20 world record of 19.69 set by American Erriyon Knighton in 2022.
Knighton also ran 19.49 at age 18 in 2022, but that wasn't ratified as a U20 world record because specific drug-testing requirements were not met.

NEW YORK – The Mets could not put up enough rums to overcome a patchwork pitching performance on Tuesday night.
The Mets put up 12 runs, including a career-high four hits by A.J. Ewing, who scored four times and drove in three runs, in a four-run loss to the Royals.
Kodai Senga, Austin Warren and Matt Seelinger each gave up four earned runs or more in the loss.
Now, with a more rested pitch staff following a chaotic weekend in Atlanta, the Mets will look to get back on track at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday night against the Royals at Citi Field.
The Mets and Royals enter the day with identical 38-54 records.

Wednesday’s reports indicate that Fenerbahce are speeding up in their pursuit of former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood and that they are close to securing a deal with Marseille as they hope to beat Roma and Atletico Madrid to the signing of the controversial Englishman.
Roma have been attempting to secure a deal for Greenwood for several weeks as Gian Piero Gasperini hopes to bolster his attacking options ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Marseille are expected to sell Greenwood this summer given their financial difficulties, but value the attacker at €50m, knowing that they will owe 40% of any transfer fee to the player’s former club, Manchester United.
Reports last week claimed that Roma had an agreement in principle on personal terms in place with Greenwood: A potential salary rumoured to be set at around €4.5m during the first year of contract, which would increase over the years.

LOS ANGELES — Dalton Rushing didn't need to say much after the game. His bat had already delivered the final word.
Just an inning after tempers flared at home plate with Rockies' Cole Carrigg, Rushing came through with the biggest swing of the night, lining an 11th-inning walk-off single to give the Dodgers an 8-7 victory over the Rockies on Monday night at Dodger Stadium. The win made the Dodgers the first team in Major League Baseball to reach 60 victories this season.
The drama began in the top of the 10th inning when Carrigg attempted to score on a close play at the plate. Rushing applied the tag, and after the out was called, the two exchanged words as both benches emptied. While players spilled onto the field, the situation never escalated beyond a heated conversation.
"I think it was the competitive nature of the game," Rushing said afterward. "You're making a play on the ball, take it the wrong way. I didn't mean any harm by the tag or the way I reacted to the ball."
The Dodgers challenged the safe call during the play and won after replay determined Carrigg was tagged before touching the plate. Colorado manager Warren Schaeffer then challenged for catcher interference, arguing Rushing had illegally blocked the plate, but the call stood.
