After missing out on Tarik Skubal, the Milwaukee Brewers have reportedly swung a deal to bolster their rotation.
Per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the Brewers acquired veteran starter Dustin May and reliever Jo Jo Romero from the rival St. Louis Cardinals Monday, hours before MLB's 6 p.m. ET trade deadline. The return on the deal was not initially reported.
May, 28, is a seventh-season MLB veteran who won a World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020. The Dodgers traded him at last season's deadline to the Boston Red Sox, and May joined the Cardinals as a free agent last offseason on a one-year, $12.5 million deal.
The Brewers made the deal after failing to acquire Skubal, the two-time Cy Young winner whom Milwaukee reportedly coveted. Skubal instead went from the Detroit Tigers to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee's top rival in the National League.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates made a significant push to improve their beleaguered bullpen at the trade deadline, acquiring veteran right-hander Luke Weaver from the New York Mets, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal.
Pittsburgh, looking to end a decade-long playoff drought, sent shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura to the Mets in exchange for the 32-year-old Weaver, the person told The ****** ociated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement was not yet official.
The addition of Weaver signals an unusually aggressive financial push by the typically frugal Pirates. Weaver is in the first season of a two-year, $22-million deal.
The move comes with Pittsburgh's bid for the National League's third wild-card spot flickering a bit following a 2-7 stretch in which the bullpen has faltered repeatedly.

If I had a nickel for every time the Royals traded a left-handed starting pitcher that some people felt was better in the bullpen on an expiring deal, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice.
It's sad to see Kris Bubic go. I still wonder if the Royals might try to bring him back on a one-year deal to a rapidly depleting pitching staff next year. There were strong rumors that the Royals had a deal worked out to send Bubic to the Angels for Taylor Ward this past offseason when Baltimore convinced them to take Grayson Rodriguez instead. Obviously, his value has diminished with a second straight season derailed by injury. Especially because no one seems to quite understand the nature of the injury. But he's no longer the Royals' problem.
Carlos Duran is a big right-handed reliever that the Dodgers added as a minor league free agent last year. He has struck out 12 batters per 9 innings but also walked nearly 6 per 9 in AAA for them this season. He still has a 3.38 ERA, though. He just turned 25 last week, and while he did make his major league debut last season, he only pitched 1/3 of an inning for the Athletics. You have to wonder if he could serve more as help in the Royals' bullpen this year than a prospect for next season.
Kris's true value seems like it's probably far less than their model indicates since he's currently on the 60-day IL and no one seems to know when he might return. If the Royals can turn Duran into a serviceable reliever, this would seem like a huge win for them.

Today is the MLB trade deadline, and the San Francisco Giants wasted no time being active. Early in the morning, news broke that the Giants had traded All-Star second baseman to the Philadelphia Phillies for right-handed pitching prospect Ramon Marquez. The Giants are also sending right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian to Philadelphia, while getting back right-handed pitching prospect Marty Gair.
The Giants held out for a nice return for Arráez, who is in line to win the National League batting **** le this year, and it seems they got exactly that with Marquez. A 20-year old who signed as an international free agent last year, Marquez has wasted no time becoming one of the top prospects in the Phillies organization. In the most recent Fangraphs rankings, Marquez graded out as the team's No. 3 prospect, and the No. 67 overall prospect in baseball.
Marquez was thoroughly dominant in Low-A this year, posting a 1.86 ERA and a 2.65 FIP in six games, with 47 strikeouts in 29 innings, and just 10 walks. That earned him a promotion to High-A, where he's kept the performance up: in six starts at the level, the righty has a 1.50 ERA, a 1.99 FIP, and 46 strikeouts to nine walks in 30 innings. He has a high quality fastball and slider, but his money pitch is a changeup that grades out as one of the best pitches in Minor League Baseball. He should immediately slot right behind the team's No. 4 pick in last month's draft, Jackson Flora, as the second-best pitching prospect in the system.
As for Gair, he was Philly's 13th-round pick in the 2023 draft. The 23-year old is a gaudy strikeout artist but struggles with command. Across 36 innings this year (33 in Low-A and three in High-A), the right-hander has 66 strikeouts and just 20 hits allowed … but has walked 22 batters. He has a 4.50 ERA and a 3.88 FIP on the season, and has worked exclusively in relief.
The Giants have been exposed this year for not having nearly enough pitching. Seen through that lens, the addition of Marquez to pair with Flora, and fellow draftees Carson Bolemon and Kaden Waechter, is a big win. Suddenly, San Francisco's pitching pipeline looks a whole lot better than it did in June.

A series loss in Cincinnati and yet another injury blow will not deter the Pirates from buying at the trade deadline.
Despite falling a game below .500, the Pirates are looking to add more pieces to their roster ahead of the 6 p.m. ET buzzer, a source familiar with the situation told Pittsburgh Baseball Now.
The Pirates made a notable move on Saturday, when they acquired right-handed reliever Camilo Doval from the Yankees for a pair of prospects. Among the other additions Pittsburgh has made so far this month are infielder Jacob Gonzalez, left-hander Brandon Eisert and right-hander Ron Marinaccio. But it's not yet enough.
This is the second time general manager Ben Cherington has been looking to add pieces at the deadline and not subtract. The other was in 2024, and if the Pirates want to be serious contenders, they can't repeat what they did two years ago.
That year, the Pirates were teetering between buying and selling but entered the deadline a couple games over .500. To bolster its roster, Pittsburgh acquired infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa from the Blue Jays, outfielder Bryan De La Cruz from the Marlins and left-handed reliever Jalen Beeks from the Rockies.

In the wee hours of the morning, the Mets reportedly completed a trade sending right-handed reliever Huascar Brazobán to the Chicago White Sox for a pair of minor league pitchers, Gabe Davis and Zach Franklin.
Brazobán's path to the majors was not a traditional one, as he was drafted in 2011 and toiled in the minor leagues for nine years, with a four year detour to the International League, before finally making the bigs in 2023 as a member of the Miami Marlins. As part of their trade deadline in 2024, the Mets sent Wilfredo Lara to the Fish for Brazobán's services. Although 2024 was not a great season for Brazobán, 2025 and 2026 have both been highly effective. 2026 has been easily his best year in professional baseball thus far, putting up a 162 ERA+, a 2.56 ERA, and a 2.13 K/BB ratio.
The knock on Brazobán, and the likely reason the Mets moved a reliever with three years of team control, is his age. Brazobán is entering his age 37 season in 2027, and with reliever volatility and the general aging curve of baseball, each subsequent season from now on seemed to be more of a roll of a the dice than usual.
The return includes Gabe Davis, Chicago's fifth round draft pick in 2025, currently ranked as the White Sox 18th best prospect via MLB Pipeline and 20th per Baseball America. Davis is a tall (6'9") drink of water who couldn't harness his raw stuff at Oklahoma State. Davis dominated High-A ball in eight starts, but struggled since his Double-A call up. Here is what our friends at South Side Sox had to say about Davis:
…The right-hander's stuff is extremely interesting. His fastball sits 94–97 mph and touches 100, thrown from a massive frame that naturally creates steep plane. The velocity doesn't always overpower hitters the way the number on the scoreboard suggests, but the pitch still flashes plenty of life. Davis' best weapon is a tight, upper-80s power slider. A pitch that can reach 92 mph and serves as a legitimate wipeout offering when he's synced up. He can morph it into a harder cutter and mixes in an occasional mid-80s changeup with promising fade, though the change remains his least reliable pitch.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Walbert Ureña pitched three-hit ball over six innings and Wade Meckler hit a two-run homer off Milwaukee ace Jacob Misiorowski as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Brewers 3-0 on Sunday.
Ureña (7-7) struck out seven and walked three as the Angels snapped a five-game losing streak. The rookie right-hander has a 2.54 ERA this season and a 2.25 ERA since May 1, a stretch in which he has allowed one or fewer earned runs in 12 of 16 starts.
Angels reliever Ryan Zeferjahn replaced the injured Sam Bachman with a runner on second and one out in the eighth. He struck out Brice Turang, gave up an infield single to Jackson Chourio and struck out Garrett Mitchell with runners on first and third to end the inning.
Zeferjahn then struck out two of four batters in the ninth for his fourth save.
Misiorowski (11-5) gave up two hits in seven innings, striking out 10 and walking one. Misiorowski extended his franchise record of double-digit strikeout games to 10 while throwing 66 of his 83 pitches for strikes.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Bryce Harper and Bryan De La Cruz both homered, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-0 on Sunday in a game halted by rain after 5 1/2 innings.
The rain was steady for much of the afternoon. The game started on time, but players had to deal with wet weather until the field was pretty well soaked after the top of the third. There was a delay for 1 hour, 49 minutes that knocked Philadelphia starter Zack Wheeler and Baltimore's Kyle Bradish (7-10) out of the game.
The Phillies then scored twice in the fourth, once in the fifth and three times in the sixth before another delay, which was followed by the game being called.
This was the last game for both teams before Monday's trade deadline. Philadelphia occupies a wild card in the National League. The Orioles fell to 2 1/2 games behind the final playoff spot in the AL.
Reliever Tim Mayza (3-3) got the win.

A three-run third inning carried St. Paul to a series-wrapping victory in Omaha as the Saints held on late to top the Storm Chasers 4-2 on Sunday night, ending their two-game losing skid.
Ending his team's 20-inning scoreless drought, Kyler Fedko plated Kaelen Culpepper and Matt Wallner with an RBI double in the top of the third, before coming home himself on Hendry Mendez's RBI double two batters later.
Omaha countered with single runs in the third and eighth, before a Kendez sacrifice fly drove home Culpepper with an insurance run in the top of the ninth.
It was a policy that St. Paul nearly had to cash in as the Storm Chasers' Alejo Lopez hit a two-out triple in his team's final turn at the plate against reliever Julian Merryweather. Fedko suffered an injury in the left field corner while attempting to field Lopez's hit and had to be carted from the field.
There was no immediate update as to Fedko's condition.

The San Francisco Giants are expected to be one of the biggest sellers in baseball this season. And on Sunday night, less than 24 hours before the trade deadline, the Giants finally got started. According to a report by Robert Murray, the Giants are trading right-handed starter Tyler Mahle to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for right-handed reliever Anthony Molina.
It's a modest return, but that's to be expected for Mahle, who has been having a difficult season. The veteran, who turns 32 next month, has a 5.13 ERA and a 4.38 FIP on the year. But he's a proven entity who was excellent last year, and has been pitching much better lately. Whether as a starter or in long relief, Mahle can add value to an Atlanta team chasing the postseason.
As for the player coming to San Francisco, Molina is on the 40-man roster, but has spent the bulk of the season in AAA. He debuted in 2024 and pitched that season and the 2025 season with the Colorado Rockies, where he amassed a 6.96 ERA and a 5.14 FIP in 52 games and 94.1 innings.
Atlanta claimed Molina off of waivers this last offseason, then designated him for ******* ignment and outrighted him to AAA, before adding him back to the roster on May 1. He's only pitched five innings across three games for the Braves Major League team, but has pitched extensively for their AAA squad this year. Atlanta has experimented with using Molina as a starter in the Minors, and in 17 games this year (and nine starts), the Venezuelan has a 3.78 ERA and a 4.14 FIP, with 53 strikeouts and 20 walks in 52.1 innings.
While Molina hasn't been particularly good, he is intriguing, and he's still only 24 years old (he also has another option year remaining after this season). He has four pitches that he's thrown more than 17% of the time this year: a fastball that averages 96.5 mph, a curveball, a changeup, and a slider. We'll see if the Giants send him to AAA Sacramento or put him in the Majors … and whether they view him as a starter or a reliever (I would ******* ume the latter).

The Chicago White Sox were one of the first teams to make a big move at this year's trade deadline, swinging a deal with the Seattle Mariners for starting pitcher Luis Castillo.
They sent prospect Boston Smith, reliever Seranthony Dominguez, and outfielder Nolan Jones to Seattle to acquire Castillo, and the final year and a half of his $108 million contract.
But, after that trade, there are still two days to go before the MLB trade deadline passes. Are the White Sox done? According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the White Sox not only are still looking to add, but they are also still interested in starting pitching upgrades.
"Even after adding right-hander Luis Castillo, the AL Central-leading White Sox remain open to bringing in another starting pitcher, said someone briefed on their plans who spoke on the condition of anonymity to freely discuss deliberations," Rosenthal reports.

CHICAGO — A lot of Yankees fans are probably thinking that general manager Brian Cashman's one and only trade-deadline accomplishment so far was giving often-struggling reliever Camilo Doval a one-way ticket to Pittsburgh on Saturday.
That's not entirely true.
The two-prospect return from the Pirates includes Omar Alonzo, a Double-A catcher who will be easy to root for. The reason doesn't have anything to do with the fact that he was Pittsburgh's No. 14 prospect in MLB Pipeline rankings or that he comes from a family that has past and present big-league catchers.
Alonzo, 22, is a native of Venezuela who lost his mother and teenage sister in a series of deadly earthquakes that struck his country on June 24.
Patricia de Alonzo, 50, and Eliana Alonzo, 16, were last seen alive at a hotel in La Guaira, Venezuela. The hotel was completely destroyed by a June 24 earthquake.

On Saturday evening, Jeff Passan broke the news that the White Sox (58-52) have acquired starting pitcher Luis Castillo from the Mariners (54-58). In exchange, Seattle received reliever Seranthony Dominguez, Triple-A outfielder Nolan Jones, and Double-A catcher Boston Smith.
Castillo, 33, is set to join the starting rotation on the South Side. In 2026, Castillo has posted a 5.06 ERA and a 4.57 FIP in 99 2/3 innings. It has been a down year for Castillo, who has only accumulated 0.6 fWAR this season. Overall, Castillo has put together an impressive career, posting a 3.65 ERA, a 3.78 FIP, and 27.0 fWAR across 10 seasons. Castillo is a three-time All-Star who finished fifth in the American League Cy Young race in 2023.
Castillo's numbers have declined significantly since last year (3.54 ERA, 3.88 FIP, 2.6 fWAR in 180 2/3 innings). This decline is noticeable, and the White Sox are aware that they are not acquiring the type of player that Castillo previously was. Castillo's fastball still has plenty of legs (95.3 mph on average, 64th percentile, slightly up from 2025). However, the effectiveness of his breaking ****** has declined sharply. Castillo's primary breaking ball and his second-most common pitch is his slider, which held opposing hitters to a measly .271 wOBA in 2025. By contrast, in 2026, batters have a .352 wOBA against it, a sizable increase. Repairing that slider is probably task No. 1 with regard to getting Castillo closer to his 2017-2025 self.
Castillo is being paid $24.15 million in 2026, and he is under team control through 2027, when he will earn the same salary. Most likely, Castillo will become a free agent at the end of the 2027 season. If Castillo pitches 180 innings in 2027, an option for 2028 will vest, and he will earn $25 million, but the White Sox would likely avoid that.
Domínguez, 31, is the only active major leaguer going to the Mariners in this trade. Domínguez has posted a 3.99 ERA and a 4.64 FIP in 38 1/3 innings as a reliever on the South Side this year. Prior to this season, the White Sox signed him to a two-year, $20 million contract. Entering the season, Domínguez was expected to be a high-leverage reliever, but he has not quite lived up to the hype.

Luis Castillo's tenure as a Seattle Mariner has apparently come to an end. The Mariners announced tonight they have traded Castillo to the White Sox in exchange for reliever Seranthony Dominguez, outfielder Nolan Jones, and catching prospect Boston Smith. Per Daniel Kramer, the Mariners aren't sending any money to offset the remainder of what Castillo is owed on the extension he signed in 2022, which runs through 2027 with a vesting option for 2028 if he reaches 180 innings.
In exchange, the Mariners will be absorbing Dominguez's not-insignificant salary for the remainder of this year and the next year of his contract, when he's slated to make $10.5M. Dominguez also has an option for 2028, but it's a mutual option (with a $2M buyout).
The 31-year-old Dominguez is on pace for the worst season of his career; he still collects strikeouts but his walk rate has ballooned over the past two seasons; he's currently walking over 14% of batters faced. Compounding that problem is a serious case of dingeritis – a career-high 16.7% of fly ******* he's allowed have gone for homers, even in Chicago's ******* ious confines. But he does still strike a lot of batters out and generate whiffs, he can still rush the fastball up at 97+, and he's got a full complement of pitches for the Mariners pitching coaches to work with, even if he's primarily a heater-sweeper pitcher as a reliever. It's an expensive gamble, but the Mariners are both solving their rotation logjam (temporarily) and shedding Castillo's contract in the move; if Dominguez can be Mariner-pitching-hive-minded into even a serviceable mid-innings arm, that's a boon to the beleaguered bullpen.
The other pieces coming over in the trade are interesting in their own right. Nolan Jones is probably a name you're familiar with if you were big into prospects a decade-ish ago; he was a second-rounder drafted by Cleveland in 2016 as a highly athletic two-sport athlete and attracted a lot of prospect attention as he made his way up the ladder for his 6'4" frame, easy raw power from the left side, and a star turn in the Arizona Fall League and the Futures Game in 2019. Unfortunately, injuries derailed his ascent, and he was dealt to the Rockies in 2023 for Juan Brito shortly after making his big-league debut. Now 28, Jones has spent time in the bigs but never really latched on consistently (outside of one 2023 season where he seemed to put it all together for Colorado), mostly due to a monstrous K rate compounded by the length of his swing. He's been with the White Sox Triple-A team this season, blocked by the surprisingly good play at the big-league level, and will likely serve a similar role for Seattle as outfield depth at Tacoma.

Essential to the Houston Astros' revival has been a resurgent bullpen. No relief corps in the majors had a higher ERA through May 21, the start of this team's slow turnaround. Entering Saturday, only one owned a lower mark since that date, a stretch in which the Astros were tied for the best record in the American League.
Extending their newfound lead in the AL West hinged on that unit again Saturday evening. Five relievers combined to throw 4⅓ innings of one-run ball as the Astros secured a 5-4 win over the Texas Rangers, moved 1½ games up in the division and ensured they will finish this series between in-state rivals alone in first place.
Houston has won 10 of its last 11 games and is 57-55, a timely push two days before the trade deadline. Outfield offense and pitching are its two priorities, in that order. Contributions from those areas on the current roster buoyed a fifth consecutive victory Saturday, matching the club's longest winning streak of the season.
Third baseman won't rule out a return this season
LaMonte Wade Jr. and Taylor Trammell, two of the Astros' left-handed hitting outfielders, drove in three of the five runs they scored against Rangers starter Jacob deGrom. With a 5-3 lead, the Astros turned to their bullpen with two outs in the fifth inning, lifting starter Ronel Blanco with a runner on and starting a series of maneuvers.

In 2026, he was just 3-9 with a 5.06 earned run average across 20 appearances.
