The U.S. hasn't had a men's major champion since Andy Roddick won in Flushing Meadows in 2003, and there haven't even been many great opportunities in the more than two decades since.
But backed by the home crowd and in good form, the Americans had five players in the final 16 of a major for the first time since 1995 and will be a real threat in the second week of the final Grand Slam tournament of the season.

We've officially reached the business portion of Cincinnati Bengals training camp, and that's because the reality of the business of the NFL is going to become very apparent in the coming days.
Even though Bengals head coach Zac Taylor indicated position battles can continue past the Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. deadline to shave the roster down to 53 players, the final three practices of the training-camp portion of the season are over. The last ended midday Aug. 26, and now Bengals players on the roster bubble have only the Aug. 28 preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field (8 p.m. Eastern) to make a final impression before cuts are made.
"I don't feel like anybody should feel comfortable going in this last week that they've made the team," Taylor said Aug. 24. "That's a big part of it, is we want guys that we can depend on. THUN, Switzerland (AP) — Swiss champion Thun sold two more players Monday from its surprise ******* le-winning team in a tough start to the season that included a quick exit from the Champions League.
Thun said defender Michael Heule joined Heidenheim in Germany and midfielder Valmir Matoshi went to Sturm Graz, the Austrian club that is in the Europa league this season.

A handful of Super 25 teams took the field Thursday, Aug. 20, and Friday, Aug. 21, and let's just say, there were plenty of fireworks from top to bottom.
This week's undisputed game of the week delivered as No. 2 St. John Bosco and No. 3 Bishop Gorman put on an instant classic. Bishop Gorman led by as many as 21 before St. John Bosco slammed its foot on the gas, eventually evening the game at 28-28 with just less than 10 minutes to play. However, the Gaels ultimately prevailed in a 38-28 win.
No. 1 IMG Academy (FL) looked every bit the part of being the top squad in the country, handling Lone Peak (UT) in a 59-3 blowout.
No. 13 Baylor School (TN) kicked things off on ESPN2, beating No. 18 Brentwood Academy (TN) by three scores by an impressive performance from Tennessee 5-star RB commit David Gabriel Georges.

MISHAWAKA — It would be hard to say with certain whose post-match smile was the biggest Thursday, Aug. 20 between NorthWood volleyball coach Hilary Laidig and her star player Ella Branham.
Both of their faces lit up the Marian High School gym with beaming pride following a key early-season victory.
Laidig watched as her gritty Panthers shook off a slow start to down the host Knights 3-1 in a matchup of area powers and Class 3A heavyweights.

In the midst of a slump, especially at the plate, the Braves were hoping that Tyler Mahle could delicer another strong start to help the Braves tie up the series in Minneapolis.
There were 5 batted ****** over 100 MPH across both teams in the first inning, but two of the three against Mahle produced two runs, on a loud Jeffers double and a mammoth Bell homer. After that, Mahle generally struggled to miss bats, but didn't give up much loud contact and was extremely efficient, needing only 76 pitches to complete 6.2 innings, keeping the Twins at just the 2 runs with a little help from Dylan Dodd to strand a batter in the seventh. Only 3 strikeouts and 8 whiffs are well off of Mahle's previous two outings, but
The offense was characteristically quiet with very few baserunners until a Drake Baldwin homer broke the shutout in the sixth.
Harris and Albies singled with two outs in the frame as well, but the Braves were unable to tie up the game, as the Twins went to their bullpen. The offense had nothing going in the seventh or eighth and Dylan Dodd gave way to Didier Fuentes in the eighth with a runner on first. Didier left a couple of pitches over the heart of the plate and the Twins took them for a single and a double, tacking on a big two insurance runs for a 4-1 lead heading into the ninth. Michael Harris led off the ninth with a double, but the Braves were unable to do anything else in the inning.
This continues a string of games during which the offense has generally not been good enough. Other than Matt Olson, none of their hitters are performing particularly up to their standards at the moment and the team is just not playing well. They built quite a cushion early in the season, but this next stretch of games is one that could turn that around quickly if they don't step it up. The 2012-13 season was supposed to be a return to glory for the Los Angeles Lakers. During the summer of 2012, they had traded for Hall of Famers Steve Nash and Dwight Howard in the hopes that both men would give Kobe Bryant the support he needed to win yet another NBA championship while he was still an elite player.
Things didn't exactly go as planned. Nash, one of the best, if not the best, point guards of his era, suffered a fracture in his left leg in just his second game with the team and missed almost seven weeks as a result. The Lakers started the season 1-4, causing then-coach Mike Brown to be fired, and when the team reached out to Phil Jackson about returning as coach, it looked like things would soon be OK.
But instead, Los Angeles hired Mike D'Antoni, the coach of the mid-2000s Phoenix Suns during the "Seven Seconds or Less" era. In a recent interview with ESPN, he admitted that he took the job because of Nash's presence on the team.
"One of the reasons why I took the Laker job -- the biggest reason, other than I wanted to coach -- was that Steve was going to be there," D'Antoni said. "So I'm thinking that if Steve and I can get this and put this together, we could be really good. And I remember asking them before I signed, 'I know Steve's hurt, when's he coming back?'
"And they go, 'Well, he'll be back by Friday. And if we can get you to sign and you get in here, he'll be almost ready to go right when you get here.' That kind of pushed me over the hill.

Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of Giannis Konstantelias from Greek side PAOK, the club has announced.
The attacking midfielder completed his medical last Sunday, with both clubs already in full agreement over the transfer.
The 23-year-old Greek International will sign a contract until 2030 and sign for a fee of €26m gauranteed, plus €6m in add-ons. The realistic package is expected to be closer to €30m and also includes a 15% sell-on clause.

After the Indiana Fever defeated the Dallas Wings on Friday, Sophie Cunningham was seen at Clayton's Country Bar in Indianapolis.
