MADRID (AP) — Changes are expected to the new Madring track next year after its lackluster debut at the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend.
Organizers said they are open to trying to improve the layout that produced virtually no overtaking opportunities and drew widespread criticism from Formula 1 drivers. The lack of track action was criticized by fans as well as F1 returned to Madrid after a 45-year absence.
Event director Luis García Abad said that governing body FIA has already indicated the changes that might be needed on the urban track that mixes existing roads and purpose-built sections. Madrid signed a 10-year contract to be on the F1 calendar.
"Well, to be honest, FIA has clearly defined how to improve the circuit layout, and we will be open to that because we will have to refurbish the circuit for next year," Abad told Motorsport.com.
Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli won Sunday's race after pole-sitter Lando Norris caught an unlucky break with the timing of the deployment of the virtual safety car. Norris ended third, behind Max Verstappen.

This one started bowling shoe ugly and ended up Sam the Chinese Crested Dog ugly, with Bradley Hanner proving why he is the definition of the 26th man on a Major League roster. Gerrit Cole gave up more home runs, three of em while not making it out of the fifth inning, but Hanner wasn't any better, allowing two dingers while five men crossed the plate against him. All this is to say the Yankees were kicked around Saturday afternoon, losing 12-2 to the Mets
I don't know what it is about Gerrit Cole. He's always been a little bit homer ***** e, especially since coming to Yankee Stadium. Fastballs in the zone lead to some kinds of nasty contact, but the thing that's really been different about him since returning from Tommy John is how many pitches he's keeping in the zone. He's got the lowest walk rate of his career, and indeed he didn't walk a single batter today. He also has the highest Zone%, or, throws more pitches in the strike zone than any other season of his career.
In his last two starts he's allowed seven home runs. Only three today, though they still counted for four runs like last weekend against the Padres.
Part of this is just random variance, enough monkeys at enough typewriters for long enough. Any time you talk about two games' worth of data, you have to throw up your hands at the universe. He's also been stung by Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Jake Cronenworth, Francisco Lindor…guys that have been around the block. Lindor especially looked keyed up to swing in the game's first AB, the first dinger Cole allowed today. Former Baby Bomber Luis Torrens and rookie Carson Benge also homered off Cole to build a 4-0 lead.

NEW YORK - Ben Rice's 3-for-4 night and key ABS challenge (reversing what would've been an inning-ending strikeout) set up Cody Bellinger's big three-run homer Friday.
But there was a lot more going on with Yankees' offense in that 6-4 win against the Mets.
With a deeper lineup since Aaron Judge's return, "it feels like there's a lot of places we can hurt you,'' said manager Aaron Boone, after a 13-hit attack that included another big night for Luis Garcia Jr.
Seamlessly fitting in to his new environment since last month's trade from Washington, Garcia's three hits raised his Yankee batting average to .314, with an .866 OPS in 33 games.
Naturally, there are some alterations to Saturday's Yankees lineup, against a lefty in Zac Thornton (3-5, 3.53), on a day game after a night game.

By the end of the third inning, Friday's game against the Padres didn't seem to promise much of a contest. The tally: 7-1 in favor of the visiting San Diegans after a barrage of extra basehits and two-out knocks. A
nthony Molina, who looked somewhat sharp in the 1st with two strikeouts with his four-seam, ran out of ideas in the 2nd and 3rd. He pressed hard on that fastball and the Padres bats welcomed it. Jackson Merrill bounced an outside fastball over the wall for a ground-rule double to start the 2nd. Molina retired the next two hitters he faced but couldn't find a way out of the frame cleanly. Dustin Harris deflected another elevated fastball to score Merrill. Freddy Fermin punched another 340 feet, easily scoring Harris from first.
Molina tried to adapt, shifting off his primary weapon his second time through the San Diego order, but nothing worked. Jake Cronenworth set the tone in the 3rd with a feisty 8-pitch scuffle that ended with a 107 MPH single off a change-up. Luis Campusano plated him by punishing a hanging slider. That double would be the first of four RBI extra base knocks in the inning. Seven Padres reached, five scored in all. Molina became less as a road-block and more as a facilitator, the operator of a fast food drive-thru, the In-N-Out at Tejon Ranch, taking each hitter's order, efficiently moving the high-volume of customers from window to window before sending them on their way with exactly what they asked for.

As Molina's fortunes plummeted, San Diego starter, Robbie Ray, making his first start against the Giants since his trade, steadied himself after a prolonged 1st inning.

ATLANTA (AP) — Drake Baldwin doubled to center field in the 11th inning to score Ha-Seong Kim from first base and the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 on Friday night in the opening game of a key NL East series.
The first-place Braves extended their lead over the Phillies to five games. The teams split a four-game series in Philadelphia that began last Friday.
Luis Arraez's single to left field off Didier Fuentes (7-2) in the 11th drove in designated runner Garrett Stubbs to give Philadelphia a 5-4 lead. Kim's single off Brooks Raley (5-6) in the bottom of the inning drove in Ozzie Albies to tie it. Baldwin followed with the winning double.
Phillies right-hander Jonathan Bowlan blew a 3-2 lead in the ninth. Bowlan gave up a one-out single to Mike Yastrzemski. Pinch-runner DaShawn Keirsey Jr., who was recalled before the game, scored from first on Sean Murphy's single up the middle and center fielder Derek Hill's fielding error.
Aaron Nola gave up homers to Matt Olson in the first and Austin Riley in the seventh. Braves left-hander Chris Sale allowed three runs on only three hits in seven innings but struggled with two outs in the second. Edmundo Sosa singled before Sale walked Bryan De La Cruz and hit J.T. Realmuto with a pitch to load the bases. Derek Hill doubled off the center-field wall to drive in three runs.

For the eighth time in nine seasons, the Milwaukee Brewers are going to the playoffs.
One of the game's most consistent powers ***** ured its spot in the postseason by flattening the Cincinnati Reds 20-0 Friday, Sept. 11 at Milwaukee's American Family Field. It's highly likely this won't be the final celebration before the Brewers finish the regular season: They hold a 10-game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central, with a magic number of three to clinch the division.
Milwaukee blitzed Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott for nine hits and eight runs in the first two innings Friday, scoring six times in the bottom of the second to build an 8-0 lead. Brice Turang hit a three-run homer and Jake Bauers a two-run shot, providing more than enough support for starting pitcher Dustin May.
Then, it got absurd. The Brewers rocked reliever Luis Mey for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth, extending the lead to 17-0. Milwaukee registered eight hits in the fifth, two by Garrett Mitchell, including a grand slam.
Per usual, Milwaukee's proven greater than the sum of its parts. The club has a bona fide ace and budding superstar in right-hander Jacob Misiorowski, what with his 104-mph fastball and major league-leading 236 strikeouts. The club has a reliable No. 2 starter in fellow second-year man Logan Henderson, but its rotation faces question marks after that.

With 2.5 weeks remaining in the regular season, those in the fantasy baseball playoffs should be focused on adding players with favorable schedules in the coming days. The list this week includes hitters to stream this weekend (Henry Bolte, Jeff McNeil, Colt Keith) as well as those who should be added by Monday (Ty France, Mickey Moniak, Cole Carrigg).
The same can be said on the pitching side, as those who need a weekend streamer can skip to the bottom of this article.
Ty France, 1B, Padres, 31%: France has been one of baseball's best hitters in the second half, batting .324 with a .937 OPS. Unfortunately, he remains on waivers in many leagues, as managers opt to chase an influx of exciting rookies rather than adding a boring veteran. But that should change over the weekend, as France and his teammates will open next week with four games at Coors Field against a Rockies pitching staff that ranks last in baseball with a 5.50 ERA. Managers in deeper formats could also consider Jake Cronenworth (6%), who has hit second in the lineup of late, or catcher Luis Campusano (1%), who is working as a DH often enough to keep him in the regular lineup.
Mickey Moniak, OF, Rockies, 26%: Moniak has some similarities to France, as a boring veteran who is having his productive season overshadowed by a constant stream of youngsters on the waiver wire. The 28-year-old has been terrific at home (.957 OPS) and against right-handers (.835 OPS) this season, which makes him a potential league-winner next week when the Rockies play seven games at their hitter-friendly home park, including five versus right-handed starters. Those who cannot add Moniak can consider his teammate, Cole Carrigg (15%).
Henry Bolte, OF, Athletics, 30%: Bolte is the fastest runner in baseball and has a bit of pop, which has made him the Athletics regular leadoff hitter and one of baseball's most explosive players. He is batting .320 since the beginning of August, and during September he has already accumulated four homers and five steals. Like many Athletics hitters, Bolte has fared best at his offense-inducing home park, which is where he will play this weekend. It helps that the series will come against the Mariners, who surprising rank 28th in baseball with a 5.39 ERA since the All-Star break.

Pumas got their first home win of the Apertura 2026 after beating Leon by a 3-1 score. Pumas played a solid match and were able to recover after giving up the tying goal to get a solid three points and climb into the Liguilla zone with the victory. Leon battled hard but it wasn't enough. They will return home to host Atletico San Luis on Monday while Pumas will have a tough away match on Sunday when they visit Guadalajara to face off against Chivas.
The 1st half started with Pumas coming out with their usual starting 11 and without Cesar Huerta, who was expected to make his return to Pumas but was rule out because of an injury. Off a counter, Jordi Cortizo got off a left footed shot that would go just wide. Ismael Diaz got off a right footed shot from outside the area that went just wide. A left footed shot in the area from Cristian Calderon would go wide. Off a counter, Luciano Herrera would get off a left footed shot from outside the area that would be saved by Leon's goalkeeper, Oscar Garcia. Cristian Calderon had hurt himself when he got off his left footed shot and had to be subbed out because of that injury. Angel Azuaje was subbed in his place. In the middle of the half, an incredible rain storm started to fall which would probably have a big impact in the match. A cross into the area found Diaz, who whiffed on his close range shot and wasted a great opportunity. A great thru pass found Uriel Antuna but the ball was cleared off his feet by Leon's defense. After a cross into the area was bouncing in the area, Antuna would get off a right footed shot that went wide. From outside the area, Ivan Moreno got off a great right footed shot that forced a wonderful save from Pumas' goalkeeper, Keylor Navas. A great cross into the area by Rodrigo Lopez was beautifully headed by Juninho past Garcia to give Pumas the 1-0 lead. It was a deserved goal as Pumas had been the better team after a slow start. A cross into the area was headed from close range by Diaz but Navas made a good save. The halftime whistle blew and after a good first 45 minutes, Pumas took the deserved lead to their dressing room.
The 2nd half started with Leon subbing out Juan Pablo Dominguez for Diber Cambindo. A cross into the area was headed wide by Herrera. A cross into the area would get to a wide open Jose Alvarado, who got off a great half bicycle kick past Navas to score and tie the match at 1-1. It was a bad mistake by Pumas' defense in leaving Alvarado wide open but he made a great goal with the opportunity. Diaz got off a right footed shot in the area that went wide. Off a counter, the ball would eventually reach Herrera, whose right footed shot went wide. Leon subbed out Ivan Rodriguez for Rodrigo Echeverria. A lob into the area found a wide open Juninho but his right footed volley went wide in a terrible miss. Pumas subbed out Uriel Antuna for Alan Medina. Off a good run, the pass into the area found Cambindo, whose left footed shot went past Navas but hit the post. A

The Milwaukee Brewers are 91-56 on the season with 15 games left to play in 2026. As of this writing, they are the only team in Major League Baseball with 90+ wins and have a 1.5-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record among all 30 teams.
While Milwaukee's success is not really a surprise to their fans, they have once again proven preseason predictions claiming they will decline to be wrong. Many pundits did not think the Brewers would win more than 82 games despite the fact that they have won the National League Central Division three years in a row.
They are all-but-guaranteed to win a fourth consecutive division crown this year.
Now, all the national media has is praise for what Milwaukee has built.

With the Yankees looking to track down the Rays in the AL East while also maintaining the cushion they have on the Red Sox, this interleague matchup against the Rockies was a couple of must win games. Colorado is closing in on 100 losses and is as beatable an opponent as there is right now, sorry to them. Well so far, so good for the Yankees as they've taken the first two games of the series. Tonight, they'll go for the sweep.
To try and accomplish that sweep, the Yankees will give the ball to Max Fried. This will be Fried's third start since returning from the IL, and he's been decent enough so far, allowing two runs in 9.1 combined innings. He still hasn't gone over 72 pitches yet, so it's still unlikely that he'll be airing it out for 100 or anything tonight, but we'll see.
As for the rest of the lineup, the big news is the return of Anthony Volpe. With Jazz Chisholm Jr. going on the IL, Volpe has been recalled and will play second base. He has been hitting decently since getting sent back to the minors, so we'll see if there's any correlation now that he's back in the bigs. Aaron Judge will get a planned day off, his first since being reinstated from the IL on Tuesday as Aaron Boone will take it slow with his superstar outfielder especially after Judge returned without a rehab ***** ignment. Jasson Domínguez will start in right field instead and bat third, flanked by Cody Bellinger and Luis García Jr.
Meanwhile, Ryan Feltner will take the mound for the Rockies. Feltner has a 5.91 ERA and a 5.27 FIP in his 106.2 innings on the season. The 30-year-old right-hander was having a decent year by Rockies pitchers standards until about mid-July, when a 2.1 inning eight-run disaster outing against Cincinnati ballooned his ERA north of five and he's stayed there ever since. His latest start was a mediocre one, where he lasted five innings and gave up four runs to the Cardinals, but he's got some seven-run outings in recent memory as the Dodgers and Nationals took him to task a couple of weeks ago.
Here's all the information to know on how to catch tonight's action, and we hope you'll come join us in the game thread!

Bayern Munich scored five goals against Norwegian underdogs FK Bodø/Glimt. The rust in the Bavarians was evident as they struggled to build rhythm. The second half turned out to be a much better affair as Vincent Kompany's men found their feet and blew their opponents away.
Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich and Michael Olise were frontrunners who woke the rest of the team up with their individual brilliance and finally reaped their rewards in the second half with deserved goals and ***** ists. Luis Diaz had an off day and was perhaps the only starter who couldn't pick himself up before the end of the game.
Without further ado, here are the match awards from Bayern Munich's first game and first victory of the Champions League season.
While Bodø/Glimt as a unit were fantastic in capitalizing on Bayern's rustiness by isolating the attackers, they failed to make scoresheet gains. In Bayern's emphatic attempts to crack the Bodø code, there were a few vulnerabilities especially early into the game. With some more numbers, the Norwegians could have sneaked at least one goal. Helmersen's shot at Neuer's open goal was a brave lone effort from his pressing.
Nonetheless, Kjetil Knutsen and his team deserve a shoutout for executing a great low-block. Nikita Haikin, the starting goalkeeper made some important saves and kept the game even. Unfortunately, he had to leave the pitch after the first half due to injury.

How Orioles' September call-up can capitalize on Luis Robert Jr.'s injury originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Baltimore Orioles are fading further away from the American League Wild Card race.
The AL East club is 4-6 in its last 10 games and needs a strong finish to overtake the Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Cleveland Guardians.
Losing outfielder Luis Robert Jr. to the injured list won't help. Robert appeared in just three games with the Orioles following his waiver claim from the New York Mets.
He landed on the injured list with a left hamstring strain. To take his place, the Orioles promoted outfielder Heston Kjerstad from Triple-A Norfolk.

Real Madrid kicks off its Champions League campaign against Inter Milan on Tuesday, with new coach Jose Mourinho aiming to win the trophy for a third time.
Mourinho is back at Madrid for a second spell after last managing the club in from 2010-13.
He won a league ****** le and the Spanish cup during that time, but not the Champions League. Since then Madrid has gone on to dominate European club soccer's biggest trophy, winning it six more times and extending its record to 15 ****** les.
And while another Champions League would see Mourinho join Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique, Zinedine Zidane and Bob Paisley on three wins, he doesn't feel the need to make up for the fact that he was unable to lift the trophy when he was last at Madrid.
"I finished my work here in 2013. We won what we won, and we lost what we lost. We gave everything, but it's a closed chapter," Mourinho said. "This has nothing to do with the past — absolutely nothing. These are two different moments in Real Madrid's history.

Real Madrid host Inter Milan in the opening game of the Champions League's Group Stage. Los Blancos are coming off a disappointing loss against Betis, so bouncing back tonight would improve the team's confidence and momentum.
Real Madrid predicted XI: Courtois; Dumfries, Konaté, Huijsen, Cucurella; Valverde, Bellingham; Brahim, Diomande, Vinicius; Mbappé.
Inter Milan predicted XI: Martínez; Bisseck, Stones, Bastoni; Luis Henrique, Barella, Calhanoglu, Jones, Carlos Ausgusto; Lautaro, Thuram.
Mourinho will have to rebuild his midfield line given that Güler, Camavinga and Bernardo Silva are all out. Bellingham will likely be deployed alongside Valverde in the double pivot, with Brahim and Diomande playing in the attacking line.

The Yankees lost the rubber-game to the San Diego Padres on Sunday, falling by a score of 4-3.
-- It was an inauspicious start by Gerrit Cole in this one after he allowed back-to-back-to-back home runs to the first three batters of the game in Fernando Tatis Jr., Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado which gave the Padres a 3-0 lead in the blink of an eye and brought Petco Park to a frenzy.
Cole settled down after that and gave up just two singles until the seventh inning when the long ball reared its ugly head once again. Leading off, Luis Campusano rocketed one to left-center field for San Diego's fourth homer off Cole which extended its lead to 4-0. The right-hander ended his outing by retiring the next three hitters and going seven innings for just the third time this season.
Three of the four home runs allowed by Cole came on his four-seam fastball and he's now given up 17 home runs in 111 innings across 19 starts this season.
-- Campusano's home run proved to be pivotal as New York's offense, which had been shut out for the first seven innings against former Yankee Michael King (six innings) and Bradgley Rodriguez (one inning, 2 Ks), scored three times in the eighth inning to draw closer.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fernando Tatis Jr., Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado hit consecutive home runs off Gerrit Cole to open the bottom of the first inning, and the San Diego Padres held off the New York Yankees 4-3 to take two of three games in their series.
San Diego starter Michael King pitched six shutout innings against his former team. Luis Campusano added a leadoff homer against Cole in the seventh for the Padres, who remained a half-game behind Arizona for the third National League wild card.
The Yankees rallied for three runs off reliever Adrian Morejon in the eighth, highlighted by an RBI double from rookie Spencer Jones, who is from northern San Diego County.
Mason Miller pitched the ninth for his 33rd save, striking out Ben Rice with a runner on first to end it.
The Yankees (81-62) need one more victory to clinch their 34th consecutive winning season. They hold the American League's top wild-card spot by 2 1/2 games over rival Boston and trail first-place Tampa Bay by four games in the AL East.

The Phillies cannot get the eighth inning right. They've tried several pitchers as the team's primary setup man this season, and all of them have proven unable to do the job consistently. On Sunday, they gave rookie Alex McFarlane a shot at the role.
He also did not succeed.
McFarlane gave up a game-tying three run home run to Ronald Acuna, Jr, and the Braves scored another in the ninth, sending the Phillies to a gut-punch of a loss.
The story of the game should have been Aaron Nola. The rejuvenated veteran pitched seven strong innings, scattering four hits, to give up a single run. If not for an epic 15-pitch at bat against Mike Yastrzemski in the third, Nola might have been able to pitch another inning. (If only.)
The Phillies' offense started off well, taking advantage of a Braves error in the first to score a couple of runs via Luis Arraez sacrifice fly and Alec Bohm double.

The World Cup, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, Ligue 1: whether with Paris Saint-Germain or with Spain, Fabián Ruiz (30) has won almost everything in recent months. Enough, at any rate, for the midfielder to start dreaming of winning the most prestigious of individual honours. The Ballon d'Or, in short.
"It's a dream for any footballer to be recognised individually for all their hard work this season and in previous ones," Ruiz said in an interview with Téléfoot. "I've been lucky enough to win lots of team ***** les, and a few individual ones too, but why not dream this year of getting as close as possible to lifting that trophy, which is something truly wonderful. It would be an honour for me to be able to lift the Ballon d'Or."
Already regarded as a key part of Luis Enrique's system, the Spaniard has also established himself as a true benchmark in his position across the continent.
"I don't like being in the spotlight or the centre of attention, but I think this year I can allow myself to be, given the season we've had, the work we've put in and the ***** les we've won," he added. "At team level, I've won everything. Individually, on the world stage, the only ***** le I'm missing is the Ballon d'Or – to be recognised by everyone."
Having made 34 appearances in all competitions (24 as a starter) last season, Ruiz once again played a pivotal role in Paris's European triumph. And this despite a season marred by several injuries that kept him sidelined at the start of 2026.

Lionel Messi set up both goals for Inter Miami as the Major League Soccer champions drew 2-2 with Atlanta United on Saturday in the Argentina star's first match since announcing his retirement from international football.
Thunderstorms and lightning delayed the start for 90 minutes, but there were sparks aplenty on the field after with Messi, Argentina's all-time leading goalscorer and most-capped player, at the heart of the action.
Miami grabbed the lead in the 32nd minute when Brazil's Casemiro rose to head home Messi's corner.
Atlanta equalized three minutes later when former Newcastle forward Miguel Almiron blasted home a low shot.
Former Liverpool and Barcelona star Luis Suarez put Miami into the lead with a measured finish on the cusp of half-time after a move down the left started by Messi.

Through its effectiveness, game management and composure to hold onto the result, Chivas defeated Atlético San Luis 3-0 this afternoon at Estadio Libertad Financiera in Jornada 7 of the Apertura 2026. The team coached by Gabriel Milito has found consistency at the start of the second third of the tournament, reaching 14 points and temporarily moving into second place.
Guadalajara came out firing, as it already had a significant 0-2 lead before the 10-minute mark, thanks to the mobility of its players and the efficiency of its attackers in front of goal. Of course, this allowed the Rojiblancos to take control of the match.
With the support of the Chivahermanos in San Luis Potosí, who never stopped cheering, the Guadalajara side was able to manage Atlético's attempts to respond. At the same time, there was never a real sense of danger in Chiverío's defensive area, which in turn allowed Guadalajara to find the definitive goal.
Next week, Chivas will return home to host Pumas in J8 of AP26. The match will take place on Sunday, September 13, at 7:07 PM.

The Cantera Rojiblanca enjoyed a perfect Saturday, as both Guadalajara's Sub-21 and Sub-19 teams earned three points on the road against Atlético de San Luis in Jornada 7 of the Apertura 2026. The action began with the Sub-21, who put together a strong first half and ultimately secured a 3-1 victory over the Potosí side, while the Sub-19 closed out the day with another Rojiblanco win, defeating the tuneros 2-0.
That's why we've put together all the details from these 2 matches below:
Sub-21 secures 3-1 victory!
Guadalajara came out with great intensity and quickly found the breakthrough. Just 6 minutes into the match, Raúl Martínez opened the scoring to put the Rebaño in front. The Rojiblanco side continued creating chances and doubled its lead in the 31st minute through Gael García.
The Rojiblanco advantage continued to grow, and in the 39th minute, Hugo Mata found the back of the net to make it 3-0 before halftime. Facing that deficit, Atlético de San Luis responded in the second half and pulled one back in the 51st minute through Jesús Borjas. However, Guadalajara held onto its advantage and ultimately secured a 3-1 victory.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Zack Wheeler struck out nine in six sharp innings, Kyle Schwarber hit his MLB-leading 41st home run and the Philadelphia Phillies pulled within four games of the first-place Braves in the NL East with a 4-2 victory over Atlanta on Saturday night.
Luis Arraez had two hits and an RBI for the two-time defending division champion Phillies, who have won 16 of their last 20.
Ronald Acuña Jr. and Austin Riley went deep for Atlanta, which lost for just the third time in 12 games.
Wheeler (12-5) escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the first inning and then looked more like the dominant right-hander he has been for much of his career after a shaky August in which he had a 6.26 ERA. Wheeler allowed one run on three hits.
Jhoan Duran tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his 30th save.

Every baseball fan is familiar with the scam known as the shell game— after all, it's present, in more innocuous form, in the cap shuffle ubiquitous to scoreboards. Tonight Zack Wheeler offered the visiting Braves a shell game, tempting them with three baserunners through three at-bats… but when the Braves selected their shell, there weren't very many runs underneath.
The start was rather subpar for the home crowd, with Wheeler allowing a pair of singles to the first two Braves, then walking Matt Olson to load the bases with none away. But a pop fly and a strikeout (aided by a canny ABS challenge from J.T. Realmuto) put him just a single out away from pulling off the great escape. Ozzie Albies flew out to center, and the Braves trudged back to the dugout with the dreaded ****** LETIGER (No Outs, Bases Loaded, Ending in Team Incapable of Getting Easy Runs, it's a real term) nipping at their heels.
But the Phillies would give Atlanta starter Martin Pérez a rougher start. Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner worked walks to start off the game, with the former dashing for third on a fly out from Bryce Harper, and slipping right past the tag. A single to right from Luis Arraez scored him, and the bases were then loaded on a walk of Alec Bohm. Realmuto walked to bring in a run (an ABS challenge on ball four proved fruitless for the visitors). The inning ended when Ronald Acuña Jr, looking truly superb, leapt into the air to turn a line drive from Bryson Stott into out number three.
Wheeler's second inning of work was a far smoother affair, with three up and three down. Pérez could not say the same. Derek Hill lined a ball to right, and Acuña suddenly looked far less superb, stumbling and allowing Hill to reach third. He then scored when Matt Olson bobbled a grounder at first.
The roller coaster ride that is Ronald then took another sudden swerve in the top of the third as he sent a Wheeler sweeper deep, deep into the left field seats. But the Phillies were certainly not inclined to let themselves be outslugged in their own ballpark: in the bottom of the fourth, Schwarber knocked a Pérez pitch over the fence in right. Two more hits, both with two outs, ensued, and Pérez's night ended.

Bayern Munich did not see this coming. Schalke came out with intent, and their low block was executed to perfection. A well-deserved point for the Royal Blues.
Fantastic defending, coupled with quick, incisive passing, and attacking initiative on counters meant Schalke was a thorn up Bayern's backside the entire game. Bayern were a snoozefest in the first half, and only the substitutions of Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Jamal Musiala into the game injected energy and purpose into the attack.
Tough day for the awards, but here are the standout performers from what was an absolute tussle of a game.
Karius just had the GAME OF HIS LIFE.
5 SUREFIRE goals saved. 3 high claims and 9 recoveries. There were other Schalke players having a better game up until the 60' mark, when Karius decided to single-handedly save his team on multiple occasions, denying Luis Díaz, Harry Kane, and Lennart Karl from point-blank range. Schalke have their star keeper to thank for keeping a point at home.
