The Boston Celtics have reportedly signed Devin Carter to a training camp deal, per HoopsHype's Michael Scotto. Carter, 24, will have the opportunity to either earn a spot on Boston's main NBA roster or to join Amari Williams and Dillon Mitchell as one of the Celtics' three two-way talents. Should he sign a two-way deal, he would be expected to spend the majority of the season with the Maine Celtics. Still, it's fair to ******* ume he'd get a chance to impress with the NBA roster at some point, too.
Unfortunately, the decision to sign Carter doesn't come without a potential roster casualty. Milos Uzan has been with the Celtics since signing an Exhibit 10 contract earlier this summer. Uzan instantly impressed when suiting up for the Celtics during Las Vegas Summer League, where he averaged 9.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4 ******* ists per game, shooting 36.8 percent from 3-point range and 38.1 percent from the field.
Following John Tonje's decision to join the Portland Trail Blazers on a two-way deal earlier in the offseason, the path for Uzan to earn the final two-way spot with the Celtics appeared wide open. Sure, he'd have to impress during training camp and beat out Tucker DeVries, but given Boston's need for a depth piece at guard, everything seemed to be lining up.
Now, with Carter also in the mix, Uzan is facing a far tougher battle to prove himself and earn a two-way spot with the Celtics. Uzan is a talented young guard and should have no problem finding a home in the coming months if things do not go his way.
Hopefully, he remains in Maine regardless of whether he gets a two-way deal. After all, he could still work with the Celtics' developmental staff and potentially prove the front office wrong for signing Carter, should that come to pass. Of course, Uzan will likely draw interest from elsewhere if Carter does beat Uzan to the Celtics' final two-way spot, and unfortunately for Uzan, that's just part of trying to make it in the NBA.

Jared Curtis' entry into Vanderbilt football's 35-26 win over Delaware was intended to happen when it did, coach Clark Lea said.
Curtis entered the game for the third drive after Blaze Berlowitz had not completed a pass in his first two drives. Lea said that the third drive was always the intention for when Curtis would enter the game, unless the game situation dictated otherwise.
Berlowitz re-entered the game near the end of the second quarter. He committed a fumble on a run play and then led Vanderbilt to a three-and-out, resulting in boos.
Curtis then played the entire second half.
"We had prescribed that, so that was less a response to the game flow," Lea said. "Obviously we were not able to move the ball offensively early, but he was going to go in third series unless it was situational."

The Milwaukee Brewers improved to 91-56 on the season following their 8-6 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. Additionally, they increased their lead in the National League Central Division over those same Cubs to 10.0 games with 15 left play.
Unfortunately, the final contest between Milwaukee and Chicago was a great deal closer than it should have been. The Brewers entered the ninth inning with an 8-1 lead and it looked like they were about to cruise to an easy victory.
Brandon Sproat, though, walked four consecutive batters and Abner Uribe allowed all of the runners he inherited to score as well as allowed an earned run of his own.

Well, Team USA had tons of trouble with Italy.
Less than six months ago, Team USA defeated Italy by 34 points in the World Cup Qualifying Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico. On Sunday in Berlin, Germany, Team USA squeaked out a three-point win, 55-52.
On paper, the Italians may not have had any advantages over the United States. The resumes and statistics that convey the Americans' superiority, however, failed to account for the firey and feisty motivation that the Italians brought to the matchup.
Team USA was going through the motions. Italy played with emotion.
As indicated by the final score, it was an ugly affair.

There are victories, and then there are statements.
On a night when Reading desperately needed a spark to ignite their season, they delivered a performance that reminded us of the quality we have running through this side. The only disappointment was the number of supporters inside the Select Car Leasing Stadium to witness it.
Mansfield Town arrived hoping to continue their strong start to the campaign. Following a recent 5-2 victory over promotion hopefuls Luton Town, the Stags were hoping to continue winning habits, but instead left on the back of a 5-0 defeat, which in truth could have been much worse.
Although many Reading players could be singled out for praise, I was particularly impressed with George Earthy, whose movement off the ball and passing ability reminded me of a certain Frank Lampard. I wonder if he ever made it in the game!
Paddy Lane had one of his best performances in a Reading shirt and Kyreece Lisbie continues to impress with his direct style of play and willingness to make things happen going forward.

The Athletic's internal investigation found that the relationship between former NFL reporter Dianna Russini and New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel was in "clear violation" of the newsroom's standards.
The outlet, which is owned by the New York Times, released a report Thursday detailing the findings of a five-months-long investigation. Mike Semel, the Athletic's editorial director for standards and quality, wrote that he was unable to find signs of clear bias or determine the exact "nature of their relationship", but said it gave the appearance of a conflict of interest.

The Lady Pirates' soccer team got to play in front of the home crowd Monday and Greensburg made it well worth the price of admission.
Greensburg scored six goals in the first half and another three goals in the second half to knock off Knightstown 9-0.
Kadence Rich led the offense with five goals. Maria Scholle was right behind her teammate with four goals.

Sanchez, whose 21 field goals last season were the second-most in school history, will not be pursued by the Cougars for a possible return, a person with knowledge of the situation told the Houston Chronicle on Friday.
Sanchez was among 41 plaintiffs to be granted an extra year of eligibility Thursday when a Dallas judge issued a temporary restraining order that prohibits the NCAA, SEC and its commissioner Greg Sankey from stopping a group of athletes from returning to college for a fifth season.

The Chicago Bears traveled to Nashville for their second joint practice of the preseason when they took on the Tennessee **** ans ahead of their game on Saturday.
It was a hot and humid day when practice got underway, which made for some chippiness, as well as a few injury scares. The Bears' offense had their way with the **** ans' defense as multiple skill players got the best of Tennessee's secondary. Ben Johnson also dialed up a few complex plays that put the **** ans in a blender. Defensively, the Bears continued to struggle stopping an opposing offense. Things were made worse when starting cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson exited practice early, though Stevenson did return. And to top things off, a scuffle broke out after a big hit from Bears safety Xavier Woods.
Here's what we learned from Thursday's joint practice.
Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has said he enjoys playing in cold weather, but it seemed like he didn't mind the heat so much either on Thursday. Starting out in practice, Williams was dialed in. According to CHGO's Adam Hoge, he completed 9-for-11 passes with six straight completions. Hoge notes the two incompletions were a throwaway and a drop, with the targets being spread out to eight receivers.
Meanwhile, NFL on Fox's Ben Arthur said Williams made special plays out on the field, highlighting his completion on a layered throw to Rome Odunze. And Blaine Kellar of Main Street Nashville clocked Williams at just three incompletions during the entire first half of practice. Whoever you ask, it's clear Williams had a strong first half of practice before the **** ans began generating pressure and forcing Williams to make poorer throws as the practice concluded.

Austin FC's Leagues Cup 2026 run came to an end following a 2-0 quarterfinal loss to LIGA MX powerhouse Toluca FC at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Wednesday night.
Toluca advance to face Club León in the semifinals next week thanks to Helinho's 53rd-minute penalty kick after Oleksandr Svatok fouled Jesús Ángulo in the box. It was only the second goal Austin conceded in Leagues Cup 2026.

Having replaced Julian Nagelsmann as Germany coach, Jürgen Klopp is set to name his first squad in his new role next month.
As the German Football ******* ociation confirmed on Monday, Klopp's first Germany squad will be announced on September 17.

Junior Fletch Palmer, son of Santa Margarita head coach and longtime NFL quarterback, was named the starting quarterback for the Eagles' season opener on Friday night, Aug. 21, against Jones (FL).

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Athletics' stadium on the Las Vegas Strip is beginning to resemble the final product, with the second steel truss arch added this week for what will eventually provide a similar look to Australia's famed Sydney Opera House.
"This week was a very exciting week," said Tyler Van Eeckhaut, project director for contractors Mortenson-McCarthy. "We set the center truss, which kicks off with a tremendous amount of work for the next upcoming months."
A's President Marc Badain said following Thursday's Las Vegas Stadium Authority meeting that the $2 billion, 33,000-person capacity domed ballpark remains on schedule to be completed in time for the 2028 season.
"I think everyone's very pleased," Badain said. "The workforce in this community has delivered on hundreds of projects over the last 30, 40, 50 years, so certainly we're not surprised. It's nice to see the vision come to life and see the trusses come up and take their part in the skyline, and it's going to be a nice anchor on the south part of the Strip. Certainly the first building you see when you land at Harry Reid Airport."
There was a concern at the prior Stadium Authority meeting over whether the A's might have to build a temporary plaza to be ready when the ballpark opens. Bally's Corp. at that time hadn't yet raised financing for an elevated plaza on the property as part of a $1.19 billion mixed-use project that includes restaurants, shopping and entertainment in addition to a hotel-casino and 2,500-seat theater.

Fan groups from various German clubs are planning large protests against the use of Video ***** istant Referees (VAR) in professional football at this weekend's men's Cup first round matches, dpa learnt on Wednesday.
The games will not have VAR because lower-league clubs are automatically at home under German Cup rules and the infrastructure to install the video review system is not in place.
"In the Cup first round we see football as it should be - without VAR and therefore authentic, immediate and full of emotion. We want to return to this state permanently and therefore demand the abolition of the Video ***** istant Referee in German football," a letter circulating among supporters of various clubs and seen by dpa reads.
VAR will come in from the men's second round. Previously this was only the case from the round of 16. The men's Bundesliga and second division will again use VAR.
"While football is about intensity and rhythm, the flow of the game suffers considerably from (VAR) interruptions which drag on. Even fans who were initially open and positive about the change state after nine years that VAR has fundamentally altered the character of the game," the fan letter continues.

DJ Ivey has been one of the surprises of training camp so far for the Cincinnati Bengals, as he tries to carve out a bigger role in the secondary going into his fourth season.
The Bengals' 2023 seventh-round draft pick has been getting a lot of first-team reps while Dax Hill has been dealing with leg tightness, and even wide receiver Tee Higgins told reporters last week Ivey has been giving him good competition.
Ivey has broken up some high-point passes to Higgins, and even when he gives up the catch to his receiver, he's been making it a challenge. That's exactly what the Bengals need out of the depth pieces in the secondary, perhaps one of the biggest areas of concern coming into camp.
"It's been going good so far," Ivey said of his camp. "Just making the plays that come to me, and just doing my best at that."
Ivey has mainly been a special teams contributor his first three seasons, but the departures of Cam Taylor-Britt and Marco Wilson in free agency this offseason mean the potential for more snaps on defense.

It's the end of an era, not just in Los Angeles, but for basketball and the NBA.

After nearly 50 years in the business of running the Los Angeles Lakers, the Buss family announced Monday that it's fully divesting its stake in the franchise.
In a statement shared with ESPN's Shams Charania Monday, the Busses announced that they're selling their remaining 17.8% share in the Lakers as part of the $12.5 billion sale of the team to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner.
"We have decided as a family to sell the remaining Buss Family Trust shares to the Bob Iger group as part of the ongoing transaction," the statement reads. "We love the Lakers, Laker fans and will continue to support Los Angeles; but it is time to use this opportunity to move on and exit gracefully while we still can."

New Scotland boss Sebastien Pocognoli says the passionate nature of Scottish football was a key factor in his taking the job.
Pocognoli, 39, was confirmed as Steve Clarke's successor on Sunday and introduced himself to the media on Monday.
Clarke ended his seven-year reign earlier this summer after Scotland failed to progress from the World Cup group stage after a victory over Haiti was followed by defeats by Morocco and Brazil.

Guglielmo Vicario, Tottenham Hotspur's first choice keeper for the past three seasons, hasn't played a minute of preseason football for Spurs this summer, amidst links to clubs in Italy. His countryman and Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi has settled on Antonin Kinsky, who replaced Vicario in last season's stretch run when Vicario was injured, as Spurs' new #1 keeper, with Martin Dubravka and Brandon Austin backing him up.
That said, it feels like we've been waiting for Vicario to leave for home and Nona's cooking all summer. Thankfully, thanks to Fabrizio Romano (sigh), we now know that Juventus are now in active negotiations with Spurs to sign Googly Elmo… though they want a loan-to-buy rather than an outright sale.
It's not clear what Romano means by a "buy clause" — whether that's a purchase OPTION or purchase OBLIGATION. I'm sure Spurs will push for the obligation, but it's not clear whether that's what Juventus is going for. I'd guess that's what the active negotiations are for. It'll never not be funny to me that Juventus are broke bois but a Vicario loan is more or less what I expected the longer this saga dragged on.
Vic is a good keeper. He's proven that over the past few seasons at Spurs, but it's also clear that he has notable deficiencies in his game, and a return to Italy is best for all parties. I hope that this ends up being a quick negotiating process and we'll get a confirmation of his loan + purchase clause sooner rather than later, for everyone's sake, including Vicario's.
