The New York Yankees' offense is missing some key bats right now, but their starting rotation is still one of the best in baseball.
Cam Schlittler, Max Fried and Gerrit Cole are an elite trio to have in a rotation. Carlos Rodón will return soon as well, but the Yankees may be interested in making the group even better. According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Detroit Tigers are "super close" to making Tarik Skubal available, and MLB insider Jim Bowden has been told the Yankees would pursue him.
"If the Tigers were to trade Tarik Skubal, (the Yankees) will play there," Bowden said on the Foul Territory Network.
A rotation featuring Skubal, Schlittler, Fried and Cole would be a nightmare for any team in a postseason series. Pair that with a healthy offense that has Aaron Judge, Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton, and the Yankees are favorites in the American League.

Champions Northampton will host Newcastle Red Bulls on the opening day of the 2026-27 Prem rugby season.
Saints beat Exeter to lift the trophy for the second time in three seasons in June and start the new campaign at home on Friday, 25 September.
The Chiefs are also at home for their first game, with Gloucester set to visit Sandy Park on the Saturday.
Elsewhere across the opening weekend, Harlequins are at home to Bath on Friday, Sale host Bristol on Saturday evening and Leicester play Saracens in the only match on Sunday.

As the Minnesota Vikings get ready for the start of training camp, one thing the Vikings' offensive coaching staff is likely preparing for is continuing the installation of the offense. That carries added importance this season if the Vikings have a new starting quarterback, particularly in the passing game, but the run game is also likely to get a bit of a makeover with the addition of ****** istant head coach Frank Smith, who is focusing on the run game.
Kevin O'Connell is an offshoot of the McVay branch of the Shanahan coaching tree while Frank Smith worked under Mike McDaniel in Miami, who is an offshoot of the Kyle Shanahan branch. McDaniel specialized in the run game working under Kyle Shanahan and Frank Smith will bring a lot of those concepts to Minnesota. I won't go into the Shanahan coaching tree history, which you can get it here, but there is a lot of overlap between various offshoots, even as each of them evolve too.
A core feature of the Shanahan offense is the wide zone run scheme. When you see all the offensive linemen take a drop or bucket step and then all block horizontally in the same direction, that is zone blocking. In wide zone, the running back aims for the ****** of the tight end or if there is no tight end on the play side, then the outside leg of the tackle. The back then reads the defensive end and makes his cut after 3-5 steps. If he moves inside, the back bounces the run outside, if he pursues outside, the back bends it back inside, if the hole is open, he bangs through. Below is a classic outside zone play, called on 1st and 10.
This isn't new for the Vikings or Kevin O'Connell's scheme. It's been a staple for years. In fact, it's not all that different than 'super power left' power sweeps we used to run in pee-wee football back in the 1970s
And if you watch the play, it didn't fool the Bengals defense. The defensive formation was toward the play side, countering the double tight-end set, the linebackers flow toward the run immediately, there is even a backside defensive back blitzing to try and get to Mason behind the line of scrimmage. The play was successful because it was well blocked and Mason didn't hesitate, but the play design itself didn't do much to tilt the outcome in the Vikings' favor.

Noah Lyles ran a world-leading 9.79 seconds as he claimed an impressive victory in the 100m at the US athletics championships.
He also equalled his personal best, which he set in winning gold at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, with the run at the Icahn Stadium in New York City.
The previous best 100m in 2026 was the 9.82 set by Jamaica's Oblique Seville in June.
"I think I made that 'I'm still the world's fastest man' statement," said Lyles.
The 29-year-old American finished ahead of Ronnie Baker in second and third-placed Kenny Bednarek, who were both given a time of 9.88s, while former world champion Christian Coleman was fourth in 9.93.

In case one has missed it, LeBron James is now a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. He will be joining a roster with Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe. Jaylen Brown, and Joel Embiid already featured while also having some serious depth with Dean Wade, Anfernee Simons, Labaron Philon Jr., and others. This is a roster as talented as any in the Eastern Conference.
The Sixers got James on a 2-year $8 million deal as they only had so much money left to spend in free agency. After playing the waiting game to make it work and bring him in on a deal, the Sixers were able to come out as the big winners of the offseason, if they weren't already.
In terms of the details of his contract, Spotrac has the details on his deal that includes a player option for the 2027-28 season.
The Sixers will be looking to reach the mountaintop and win their first championship since 1983 following the busy offseason and will look to move forward with the future Hall of Famer on the roster.

After a saddening 1-0 loss for Argentina against Spain on Sunday's World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium, team captain Lionel Messi took to Instagram to post about the defeat.
"The pain is so great and it's going to be hard for me to close this wound," Messi shared.
The question begs however, what is next for Messi's soccer career and when will he possibly return to New Jersey?
Messi is taking a break to recover from the World Cup tournament per FIFPRO, the global representative organization of football players, which calls for a 21-day break for players for their health after the end of each season.
After the game, the team flew back to Argentina, while Messi opted to fly to Miami before he travels to Rosario, Argentina to begin his break, according to ESPN.

England will begin their quest to regain the men's Ashes from Australia at Trent Bridge on 18 June next year, with the women's series starting six days later.
The second men's Test at Lord's begins on 30 June and the third at Edgbaston on 8 July.
The Utilita Bowl in Southampton will become the 10th UK ground to host a men's Ashes Test when the fourth Test gets under way on 21 July, with the series concluding at the Kia Oval from 29 July.
The multi-format Women's Ashes will be held from 24 June to 20 July as the two series run alongside each other like in 2023.
The men will not play any Tests in the north of England after Emirates Old Trafford and Headingley were not selected to host matches.

New York Knicks superstar Jalen Brunson has provided an update on his wrist after undergoing surgery.
Brunson suffered his wrist injury in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
It did not stop the point guard from averaging 32.6 points per game in the NBA Finals and winning the Finals MVP.
However, Brunson decided to have surgery soon after the season ended and remains unable to practice.
The 29-year-old has now revealed when he hopes to return to playing basketball in preparation for the 2026-27 season.

Boston United have re-signed defender Jamie Grimes on a one-year deal after he was released by Chesterfield.
The 35-year-old former Spireites captain saw out the final months of his contract with the Derbyshire club by going out on loan to Boston last term.
He featured 16 times for the Pilgrims as they finished 12th in the National League table.

The Grizzlies beat the Warriors in an NBA Summer League game at ****** Pavilion in Las Vegas on July 14, but the path there was anything but straightforward.
Even though many teams have started to rest or completely shut down their top players, the Grizzlies started both Cam Boozer and Cedric Coward. Neither played particularly well, though.
Instead, it was Javon Small and Brendan Hausen who led the Grizzlies to a 106-85 win over the Yaxel Lendeborg-led Warriors.
Here are our takeaways from the game.
There was no doubt that Small and Hausen were the Grizzlies' standouts against the Warriors. Small was effective throughout, scoring 26 points and dishing out seven ****** ists as he controlled the game as the Grizzlies' point guard. He was also 5-of-8 from beyond the arc, and the Warriors had no answers for his offensive game.

PHILADELPHIA – Tristan Peters says he’s unaware of the hand-wringing that will take place in Milwaukee on July 14 when he takes the field in the All-Star Game as a rookie. That’s probably for the best.
Peters’ selection to the midsummer classic at Citizens Bank Park is the latest and greatest development in a long, winding journey for Peters that involved playing for the Savannah Bananas and beginning his professional career with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Peters, a seventh-round pick in the 2021 draft and now with the Chicago White Sox, was a part of the final big-league trade David Stearns made as the head of baseball operations for the Brewers. In the final hour before the 2022 trade deadline, Milwaukee flipped Peters, then at Class High A Wisconsin, for reliever Trevor Rosenthal.
Rosenthal never threw a pitch for the Brewers.
“No, I haven’t heard,” Peters said July 13 of the reaction to the trade. “I haven’t really looked into it.”

The 2026 MLB Draft has come to an end, and now comes the fun part; seeing these players get a chance to take on professional pitching/hitting as they try and help their new organizations at the highest level. Some of these players will be ready to help in a year, and some will need far longer to develop; with the unfortunate reality that there will be players who never get a chance to play games in the majors.
Here's a look at the top 10 prospects from a fantasy perspective who were drafted over the weekend, and a look at what categories they could potentially help in.
1. Grady Emerson, SS, Tampa Bay Rays
Emerson may have been the second pick of the draft -- and he ranked second on my MLB Draft big board, as well -- but from a fantasy perspective? He's the best. He's a left-handed hitter who has a chance for a double-plus hit tool, or 70 on the 20-80 scouting scale, because of his bat speed and smooth stroke. There's above-average or better power in his bat as well, and the separator here is that Emerson is much more likely to steal bases. There's a little more risk in his profile than the name below, but on paper, there's no player with higher reward, and that's why I'd take him first in any eligible draft.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed that the organization will examine the possibility of expanding the World Cup to a 64-team format as early as the 2030 edition.
The information was published by The Athletic, the sports arm of The New York Times.
The current tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, introduced the 48-team format, a significant increase from the 32-team version that was in place from 1998 to 2022.
For 2030, the World Cup is scheduled to be spread across six nations and three continents: Morocco, Portugal and Spain will host most of the matches, while Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will each stage one match at the start of the competition, in tribute to the centenary of the 1930 World Cup.
Discussions gained momentum in September 2025, after FIFA received a formal proposal from a delegation of South American leaders.

Jude Bellingham hit back at boss Thomas Tuchel’s ******* ing ******* ysis of England’s performance in their 2-1 World Cup quarter-final win against Norway and called for positivity.
Bellingham was the star of the show with two goals as England overcame the extreme Miami heat to come from behind, banking his fourth man of the match award from six games.
Tuchel’s side had to do it the hard way against the Scandinavians, requiring extra-time to eventually book their fourth World Cup semi-final, and the German said he was “not happy with the performance”.
The Real Madrid star did not take that lying down and challenged his manager’s view.
“Maybe he doesn’t know what it’s like to play in those kind of conditions against Erling Haaland, (Martin) Odegaard, (Antonio) Nusa, (Alexander) Sorloth.

Chelsea have intensified their search for attacking reinforcements this summer, with Bologna’s dynamic winger Jonathan Rowe emerging as a key target. Xabi Alonso is at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have reportedly made fresh contact with the 23-year-old’s representatives in recent days to discuss the framework of a potential move. While no formal offer has been submitted to Bologna yet, Chelsea’s recruitment team have placed the former Norwich City academy graduate high on their shortlist as they look to add reliable depth to their wide options.
Rowe’s career has accelerated over the past two seasons. After rising through the ranks at Norwich and spending a brief spell at Marseille, the ‘magic’ Englishman has settled well in Italy. Last season, he enjoyed a productive campaign, recording eight goals and four ******* ists in 43 appearances across all competitions. Notably, Rowe showcased his big-game credentials by scoring a dramatic 91st-minute winner against Napoli and netting against Aston Villa during Bologna’s European knockout run.
Bologna are under no immediate pressure to sell Rowe, who is under contract until June 2029. However, the Rossoblu’s failure to secure European football next season could make a lucrative offer tempting. The Italian club currently value the winger at around €40 million.

Mario Gila has spoken for the first time since completing his move to Milan, crediting the club's standing and Ruben Amorim's vision as the factors that swayed him.
The Spanish defender, who signed a contract through to 2031 upon sealing his €30m transfer from Lazio, gave his first interview to the club's official channels.
"I chose Milan because it's one of the strongest teams in the world. The history it has and everything around it was exactly what I needed to reach a certain level," Gila said.

Iona Prep wrestling will have a new face and voice in the corner this coming season.
The Gaels recently announced Jacob Ferreira as their new head coach, succeeding Tom Straehle, who retired.
Most recently, the 26-year-old Ferreira was an ****** istant coach at Horace Greeley, his alma mater. He was Section 1 champion in 2017 at 170 pounds and again at 182 pounds, advancing to the state final in 2018. Ferreira went on to compete at Bucknell, N.C. State and Hofstra, qualifying for the NCAA Championships for Hofstra in 2023. He now teaches social studies at Bronx Dance Academy.
Straehle, 62, established the Iona Prep program in 2006 and earned his 300th dual meet victory last December.
"It means a lot," Ferreira said. "I've always wanted to be a head wrestling coach, especially at a storied program like Iona Prep. I think I'm ready for the challenge."

By keeping most of Michigan's team intact this offseason, it appears interim head coach Mike Boynton has earned the trust of the University and been awarded a two-year deal.
It has been less than a month since Dusty May left Michigan after winning a national championship and took a job in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks. The University moved quickly to name Boynton the interim at the time, and he was handed the difficult task of retaining the roster that May had built, which many consider one of the strongest in the country and once again a Big Ten favorite.
Ohio State fans kept tabs on the story as no one likes it when their arch-rivals succeed, much less at the level that the Wolverines had done. With May in charge, it seemed like the Wolverines had the potential to be a thorn in the side of Ohio State for years to come. With Boynton, the future is unclear. Boynton, 44, is best known for his seven-year run as head coach at Oklahoma State. He went 119-109 with the Cowboys, highlighted by a 21-9 record in 2020-21.
After going 12-20 in 2023-24, Oklahoma State decided to part ways with its head coach, and he resurfaced as an ******* istant coach in Ann Arbor.
It would be safe to ******* ume that Boynton's ability to keep most of the roster intact is one of the reasons he was awarded the new contract. But after coming off a national championship season, the margin of error that will be afforded him may be slim.

Glenavon say they have agreed to "move forward amicably" with the Northern Ireland Football League [NIFL] after meeting with CEO Gerard Lawlor.
In June, NIFL said it was "working closely" with Crusaders after the Seaview club were placed under a transfer embargo by the Irish FA over a breach of regulations.
Michael O'Connor's side were relegated to the Championship after finishing bottom of the Irish Premiership, eight points and one place below Crusaders.
In response to Crusaders' embargo, Glenavon said they had appealed to NIFL and the Irish FA "to seek further clarification from them regarding the circumstances surrounding the transfer embargo imposed on Crusaders".
On Friday, the Lurgan Blues said that co-chairperson Lawrence Looney and vice-chair Cathal Morrison met with NIFL chief executive Lawlor for "open, honest and confidential discussions" over the matter.

Bayern Munich could have another option for midfielder João Palhinha as Benfica might have some interest in the 31-year-old:
Benfica are currently the club showing the most interest in João Palhinha and are preparing a bid in the region of €20m fixed plus €5m in performance related add-ons. Benfica coach Marco Silva, who worked with Palhinha at Fulham, sees him as his desired target in midfield and wants to reunite with him. Palhinha is very interested in a return to Portugal/Lisbon.
At this point, Bayern Munich might not care too much about where Palhinha goes, just as long as he takes his €12 million salary package off of its books. Getting that much would be a steal for the Bavarians, who have no use for Palhinha.
Arsenal might be ready to drop a ton of look on Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers…or they are — at least — thinking about it:
Arsenal must meet Aston Villa’s valuation if they want to sign attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers, according to Football Insider. The Gunners are believed to be at the front of the queue for the 23-year-old but, with five years remaining on his contract, Villa are expected to stand firm with their demands of a £130 million transfer fee. Rogers scored 10 goals in 37 Premier League matches last season, and is one of the top names on manager Mikel Arteta’s shortlist.

Wales head coach Steve Tandy hopes his side have learnt the lessons from their previous painful experience against Argentina.
The Pumas celebrated a record 52-28 win in Cardiff in the first game of Tandy's reign in November 2025.
Wales have a chance to avenge that heavy seven-try defeat after heading to San Juan for round two of the new Nations Championship competition on Saturday (20:10 BST).
"It was our first game together and I thought Argentina gave us a lot of lessons," said Tandy.
"It's always relevant looking back at games, but we've also moved on."

Thursday's media covers in Spain are all about Aurelien Tchouameni as the player has reportedly completed an agreement with the club to extend his contract until 2031.
The Frenchman, after all, has been linked with a departure from Real Madrid for several weeks now and was said to be one of the chosen candidates whose departure would generate necessary funds.
Jose Mourinho, however, pushed for him to stay and the player wanted nothing less, making the renewal operation easier than expected.
The official paperwork, however, is expected to be delayed as Tchouameni is currently participating in the FIFA World Cup.
While Tchouameni has been a regular starter in Didier Deschamps' plans, injuries have halted him from participating in two of France's five games so far.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — England midfielder Jordan Henderson rejoined The Three Lions at their World Cup training base Wednesday after undergoing surgery on his left wrist following a freak injury that he sustained while celebrating their Round of 16 triumph over Mexico last weekend.
The 36-year-old Henderson posted a photo on social media of his left arm wrapped after the procedure at the Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute, which is about a 10-minute drive from their team hotel in the suburb of Prairie Village, Kansas.
“Surgery done!” Henderson said. “Now let's get ready for the big one Saturday.”
Henderson, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup, had been an unused substitute for Sunday's match against Mexico at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. The Three Lions had just survived a 3-2 thriller to advance to a quarterfinal against Norway when Henderson hurt his wrist while climbing over an advertising billboard.
“I’m sad because Jordan injured his wrist,” England coach Thomas Tuchel said after the match. “It’s quite serious.”

Replacing Robert Lewandowski has become one of Barcelona’s biggest priorities, and Hansi Flick appears to have made up his mind about who should lead the club’s attack in the years ahead.
