Data centers have emerged as a national issue during this midterm election cycle, and candidates for the House and Senate have seized on it in their campaigns.
But state and local officials actually have more sway over data center construction and energy infrastructure, so the winners of lower-profile races may hold the economy's future in their hands.
Hyperscalers have been spending hundreds of billions of dollars a year, with forecasts for 2027 topping $1 trillion. JPMorgan has estimated AI-related investment was responsible for about one-fifth of GDP growth over the past year. ******* ysts at ING believe AI will account for a third of growth in 2026.
With Election Day just over a week away and early voting already in full swing in many states, expectations for big Democratic gains could weigh on the stock market, which has sold off in recent days on fears the AI boom will go bust.
If there is a further stock slump, it will be because a "blue wave" at the state and local levels will usher in lawmakers opposed to data centers, Thierry Wizman, global FX and rates strategist at Macquarie, said in a note on Monday.

PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) — President Donald Trump intensified his anti-Muslim rhetoric against Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed on Sunday, portraying him as a threat to national security and questioning his loyalty to the United States in remarks that drew a sharp rebuke from a former top Arab American ally.
Trump called El-Sayed, a former Detroit health official, a "jihadist" who was "on the side of the terrorists" and would "have to go through a metal detector before he's allowed to go into the Senate." He also repeatedly invoked the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, drawing a comparison between stopping El-Sayed from entering the Senate chamber and the passengers who fought back against the hijackers aboard United Flight 93.
El-Sayed, who would become the nation's first Muslim senator if elected, has called attacks on his loyalty to the country "shameful" and repeatedly denied any ties to extremist groups. The Republican president's remarks were condemned by Bishara Bahbah, a founder of Arab Americans for Trump, the group that helped lead the president's outreach to Arab American voters in 2024.
"The president's statements are out of line," he said in a phone interview. "They are crossing a red line. They are racist."
With Republicans on the defensive over inflation, soaring fuel prices and the Iran war, the president has been trying to generate turnout by claiming that El-Sayed and other Democrats are existential threats to America, instead of electoral rivals. Michigan's Senate race between El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers is among a handful of contests that could determine control of the chamber.

The Ballon d'Or may be heading to Germany, with Harry Kane back as the favourite to lift the trophy on betting sites.
After scoring 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country, including six goals for England at the World Cup, Kane has been reinstalled as the favourite to clinch world football's top individual honour.
The race previously shifted in favour of Barcelona's Lamine Yamal, with the teenager going odds-on with the bookies after he played his part in Spain becoming the world champions for only the second time.
But ahead of the glittering ceremony on October 26, the England skipper could be about to add even more honours to his already impressive CV.
Were Kane to win the Ballon d'Or, he'd be only the fifth Englishman to clinch the prize and the first since Michael Owen in 2001. He was installed as the early frontrunner by football betting sites after a storming 2025/26 campaign.

The story for the 49ers entering the season was injuries, right down to head coach Kyle Shanahan. The story since the start of the season has been success.
While injuries certainly have been a factor for the 'Niners, from Nick Bosa to De'Zhaun Stribling and Deebo Samuel, Shanahan's group has found a way to thrive in spite of them. After the 49ers won in Seattle in Week 5, the NFC West could just be a race for second behind San Francisco.
On the other side of the country, the Commanders have managed just one win in five games. That doesn't mean they have four losses, though. Washington settled for a tie in Week 5, after a disastrous final sequence that largely remains unexplained. Coach Dan Quinn said after the game that it felt like a loss, and it's hard to argue with that.
Going on the road and handing the 49ers their first loss would unquestionably be a win, though. The upset-minded Commanders are hoping to channel last weekend's frustration and leave the west coast feeling like they can compete in a wide-open NFC East race.

Noni Madueke made the difference for ***** nal as his deflected effort helped the Gunners secure a hard fought victory over Nottingham Forest in a difficult Premier League match. The result earned ***** nal three important points as they continue their battle for the ***** le against Manchester City.
Arsenal know they cannot afford to fall six points behind City, who have started the campaign in impressive fashion. The Manchester club have performed better than many expected and could maintain their winning run, leaving the Gunners under pressure to keep pace with their rivals.
The City Ground is a difficult venue for visiting teams, with Nottingham Forest having a reputation for making life uncomfortable for their opponents. ***** nal were well aware of the challenge before kick-off, particularly after failing to score on their previous two visits to Forest.
That record offered a warning of what could happen, and the match proved challenging for Mikel Arteta's side. Forest made the contest difficult, using direct play and aerial ***** to disrupt ***** nal and prevent them from finding their rhythm.
However, the Gunners continued to search for a breakthrough and eventually found one through Madueke. His deflected shot provided the decisive moment, allowing ***** nal to leave Nottingham with all three points and avoid dropping valuable ground in the ***** le race.

Niclas Füllkrug has been a big success at Werder Bremen since returning on loan from West Ham in the summer, with a brace against SC Paderborn at the weekend taking his tally to seven goals in as many games for the Green-Whites this season.
Given Füllkrug's impressive form, questions are already being asked about Werder's chances of keeping the 33-year-old beyond this season, with sporting managing director Clemens Fritz addressing the topic on the Sky programme "Sky90 – die Fußballdebatte" on Sunday.
"Ultimately, there are three parties involved: West Ham, Niclas and Werder Bremen. And that is, of course, what makes it challenging. With two parties, things are sometimes a little easier," Fritz said.
One positive for Werder is that Füllkrug is happy at the club.
"Niclas feels comfortable in Bremen. He does us an enormous amount of good. Of course, I would be delighted if he stayed with us beyond this season, and I'm sure the whole of Bremen would feel the same. At the moment, however, it's still too early," Fritz added.

Arsenal travelled to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest, knowing they had failed to win there in their previous two visits. The Gunners were aware of the challenge awaiting them, especially with Forest determined to avoid defeat against them once again.
Although Forest have a new manager, their determination to frustrate **** nal remained clear. Mikel Arteta's side are competing with a strong Manchester City team in the Premier League **** le race, making every match crucial as they look to win the competition again.
Arsenal knew they needed three points to keep pace with City, but securing the victory proved difficult. Forest looked dangerous, particularly in attack, and the Gunners struggled to impose themselves as they would have wanted.
Given the hosts' performance, **** nal might have considered themselves fortunate to escape with another goalless draw. However, Noni Madueke found the breakthrough late in the game, scoring with a deflected effort to secure a vital win for the visitors.
The goal provided **** nal with a valuable result at a ground where they had struggled in recent seasons. It also highlighted the importance of persistence in a match where clear opportunities were difficult to create.

Real Madrid rediscovered their sparkle with an emphatic rout of Sevilla in a match that saw Arda Güler take charge, while Madrid fans celebrated Kylian Mbappé's clinical finishing and Yan Diomandé's emergence. Rounding out the football action are a domestic transfer market stirred by Getafe's interest in Sergio Ramos, a struggling ***** nal's resilience in the Premier League, and Nico Paz's unstoppable form under Cesc Fàbregas in Italy.
Real Madrid delivered a commanding performance with a 4-1 victory over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu, inspired by a stellar display from Arda Güler. José Mourinho's side showed a dramatic improvement in their fluidity to set up a comfortable win, sealed by a brilliant Kylian Mbappé brace and another standout goal from youngster Yan Diomandé, establishing the Turkish midfielder as a cornerstone of Madrid's midfield for the immediate future.
The defeat left the Sevilla camp deeply aggrieved, with outrage spreading from the dressing room to the press room and the club's official channels as they left Madrid's ground. Coach Luis García Plaza and players including Kike Salas and Juan Iglesias openly argued that Güler should have been sent off for a heavy challenge on Peque, directing their criticism squarely at the handling of VAR.
On the transfer front, Getafe once again grabbed the headlines after president Ángel Torres surprisingly confirmed in public that Sergio Ramos is among the club's potential signings. Bengaluru: For Tilak Varma, the number next to his name on the team sheet matters far less than the one on the scoreboard at the end of the match.

The India T20I vice-captain has seen his role evolve considerably in recent months, moving from the top order to the finisher's role as the team continues to fine-tune its combinations. While adapting to different batting positions is rarely straightforward, the 23-year-old has embraced the challenge and put the team's needs ahead of personal preference.

Having begun his T20I career near the top of the order, Tilak now often finds himself walking in at No. 5 or 6. With Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opening, Ishan Kishan firmly established at No. 3 and skipper Shreyas Iyer occupying the next slot, opportunities higher up the order have become limited.

Rather than viewing it as a setback, Tilak sees it as another responsibility to master.

"Ishan is batting brilliantly at No. 3. So, for me, there is no option but to bat at 5 and 6 and do the job for the team. I am mentally prepared for that role and in the last few games, I have won matches from there. So, I am pretty confident," Tilak said after the rain-hit series decider against the West Indies in Bengaluru on Saturday.

The left-hander admitted that the transition from a top-order batter to a finisher has not been without its challenges.

"It's not easy to change from No. 3 to No. 5 or 6. It is slightly challenging. But I have been working on how I can finish games, and I love finishing games for the country," he said.

The demands of batting in the lower middle order are vastly different from those of a top-order role. There is little time to settle in, and the emphasis is on making an immediate impact rather than constructing an innings. Tilak said he has consciously altered his preparation to meet those demands.

"I have been working on it in the nets. Otherwise, it becomes tough. When you go in as a finisher and a slower ball comes into your arc, you need to be ready to hit it for six. In T20 cricket, if you bat at No. 5 or 6, you generally get only five or six overs, so I have had to change my approach."

Fortunately for Tilak, batting down the order is not entirely new territory.

"I batted lower down the order in my childhood as well. I have shots all around the ground and I am confident in my ability to adapt. Whether it is No. 3 or No. 5, I believe I have the technique to fit into any role for the team if I prepare well," he said.

Round 18 of the 2026 Formula 1 season heads to the Circuit of the Americas for the United States Grand Prix, from 23-25 October.
In the previous race in Singapore, it was a dominant weekend for Max Verstappen who qualified on pole and won for both the sprint and main race - his first victories at the Marina Bay Circuit.
The Ferraris were consistently on the Dutchman's tail for the majority of the weekend, but a poor strategy call from Lewis Hamilton meant he could only finish sixth. His team-mate Charles Leclerc finished second with Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli third.
Antonelli has his first opportunity to secure this year's world **** le in Austin. For that to happen, the Italian must win the race with Mercedes team-mate Russell ninth or lower and Hamilton finishing fifth or lower.
The clocks go back in the UK on race day so we will be on BST for the Friday and Saturday sessions but GMT for the race.

The overall performance certainly wasn't perfect, but the Green Bay Packers still rolled to a two-score win over the visiting Dallas Cowboys on "Sunday Night Football" from Lambeau Field in Week 6. Brian Schottenheimer's team was well-rested after playing on Thursday night in Week 5 and not lacking motivation after a humbling home defeat in primetime, but the Packers still raced out to a 17-0 lead and ended up leading the game by two scores for most of the night. Matt LaFleur's team has won three straight games and is 4-2 overall, an acceptable record given the ups and downs of the early season.
Three big things from the Packers' win over the Cowboys:
Facing Dak Prescott, Javonte Williams, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens without Micah Parsons, Edgerrin Cooper and Javon Hargrave provided a big test for Jonathan Gannon's defense, and the group passed it with flying colors. The Cowboys managed only 13 points, of which seven came in garbage time, and Gannon continually had Prescott under pressure and making rushed and confused decisions against the blitz or the pre-snap appearance of a blitz. Prescott averaged only 4.8 yards per attempt, and the Packers got a pair of interceptions inside their own 30-yard line and a pair of fourth down stops on pass attempts in the fourth quarter. More and more, the home opener disaster against the Atlanta Falcons is looking like a blip on the radar. The Packers have allowed fewer than 14 points in three straight games since.
The Packers offensive line took several steps forward in games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears, largely due to the settling of performances at both guard spots. But Sunday night represented a step in the wrong direction and provided evidence that the problems along the offensive line aren't solved quite yet. Jordan Love was under pressure on 45.5 percent of his pass attempts, his highest percentage since Week 1. And the run game accomplished next to nothing, averaging only 2.2 yards per attempt overall and 1.8 yards on runs by Pierre Strong Jr., MarShawn Lloyd and Kaleb Johnson. The Packers got by because Love was excellent under pressure early, and the defense made enough stops so that the struggles moving the ball in the second half didn't matter. The inconsistency of the offensive line, drops in big spots and untimely penalties still look like the Packers' biggest hurdles.
Rookie kicker Trey Smack calmed fears of any prolonged struggles by making all five of his kicks, including all three field goals. Even on a breezy night inside Lambeau Field, Smack enjoyed a bounce-back performance -- even if only one of his five kicks was from over 40 yards (a 44-yard field goal). More importantly, Smack didn't let last week's issues bleed into a new opportunity. Against the Bears, his three misses cost the Packers seven points. On Sunday night, Smack's five converted kicks created 11 points in a 10-point win.

The Big 12 is suddenly the conference driving college football's playoff race originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Big 12 came out of Saturday's chaos with something more valuable than a few headline wins: a stronger place in the national conversation.
The latest AP Top 25 includes five Big 12 teams, a season high for the conference. BYU leads the group at No. 2, followed by Texas Tech at No. 8, Utah at No. 10, Houston at No. 14 and Arizona at No. 25.
That is a substantial shift in the playoff picture. The Big 12 has not just one team positioned near the top; it has multiple programs ranked inside the top 15 and another holding a place in the poll.
BYU's rise to No. 2 is the most eye-catching part of the conference's week. It is the Cougars' highest ranking since their 1984 national championship season, giving the program a national profile it has not held in decades.

Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen's story reveals how colorism, comparison, and beauty standards can shape Black women's self-image from childhood into adulthood.
For generations of Black communities, actress Phylicia Rashad has been seen as one of the beacons of grace and beauty. However, in a recent conversation on the "IMO Podcast" hosted by Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, Rashad revealed that she once did not see herself as beautiful in comparison to her sister Debbie Allen.
"I think if there was competition that I felt, I always felt that Debbie was beautiful and that I was not," Rashad shared. "I don't remember what led to the conversation, but I said to Deborah that I had always wanted to be beautiful, like her, and she looked at me, she said, 'But you're the beautiful one, you're the one. I was always trying to be beautiful like you,' and then we broke down and started crying."
"We grew up with that foolishness, that colorism, foolishness that brown paper bag [test] foolishness," Allen interjected. "I remember one time Phylicia loved chocolate milk, and we were drinking chocolate milk, and my uncle said to her, 'Girl, you better drink all the white milk you can.' That was so ugly."
"I think that's why Phylicia felt, but Phylicia looked more like Mama than me. And I always wished that I was pretty like her," Allen added.

Halle Bailey flaunts toned legs in sleek black Alex Perry leather and jersey gown at the NYFF. For the premiere, Bailey wore a black one-shoulder gown from Alex Perry's Pre-Fall 2026 collection. The floor-length design featured a soft leather bodice with a straight neckline, paired with a contrasting jersey drape that cascaded diagonally across her body. The jersey moved fluidly with her, while the leather added structure to the bodice. The actress embraced one of Perry's more dramatic looks for the occasion.
The asymmetric strap gave the silhouette a modern edge, while the gown itself retails for $2,800 USD. The Australian label is known for sleek, body-conscious evening wear, and this gown fit right in.
