The 2026 Trade Deadline has officially come and gone, and it's time for the immediate breakdown of the state of the Yankees following it. It's fair to say that most weren't projecting a flashy deadline for New York with a big-name blockbuster or anything of that sort, but it still comes as a surprise that at the end of the day they made only three moves: they traded Camilo Doval away to Pittsburgh, and then added Luis García Jr. alongside Heliot Ramos to bolster their lineup and provide some depth to the outfield while two of their stars are on the shelf.
Let's start with what they did accomplish before we get into what they failed to get. García is a legit A-plus addition offensively, leading the National League in slugging and coming in just behind Ben Rice for third overall across MLB. They also managed to pry him away from Washington for a basket of arms that they likely didn't have plans for this season and possibly even next, sending off their 14th-rated prospect Jack Cebert and their 25th-ranked prospect Ben Grable by MLB Pipeline's scouting, alongside Yovanny Cruz and Jake Bird. Cruz impressed in Triple-A this season and got a couple brief stints with the major league team but never seemed to be in the plans for a postseason bullpen, while Bird actively worked his way off the roster two years in a row after getting acquired at the deadline last season. Overall, that's a more than acceptable package to surrender in exchange for a bat that can mash against righties and bring some protection to Rice's spot in the order.

García's defensive fit is a bit more murky, as he's a first baseman when the team already has Rice and Paul Goldschmidt working there. Goldschmidt, for all his early-season success, is still meant to be a backup for this team, and it looks as though he'll cede playing time to García at first while Rice will primarily play as the designated hitter.
What that group looks like once Giancarlo Stanton is back in the fold, who knows, but the Yankees can't plan on Stanton just sliding back in after missing most of the season and needing a bat in the worst way to stay afloat here and now. The Yankees will have García for the 2027 season as well, ****** uming there will be one amidst CBA negotiations and the very real threat of a lengthy lockout.

Within striking distance in the National League wild card race, the Pirates made a couple notable trades in the days and hours leading up to Monday's deadline.
The focus for the Pirates was clear; relief pitching, relief pitching and more relief pitching. In total, Pittsburgh made four trades over the last three days to completely revamp a bullpen that has been the team's Achilles' heel.
While the bullpen was correctly identified as the biggest need for the Pirates, they didn't address a couple other areas that they probably should have.
Overall, how did they do?
The Pirates made their first strike on Saturday, when they acquired veteran reliever Camilo Doval from the Yankees for a pair of prospects. I did a full trade ****** ysis (click here to read) on the deal, so I won't go too much into detail.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates made a significant push to improve their beleaguered bullpen at the trade deadline, acquiring veteran right-hander Luke Weaver from the New York Mets, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal.
Pittsburgh, looking to end a decade-long playoff drought, sent shortstop prospect Sammy Stafura to the Mets in exchange for the 32-year-old Weaver, the person told The ****** ociated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement was not yet official.
The addition of Weaver signals an unusually aggressive financial push by the typically frugal Pirates. Weaver is in the first season of a two-year, $22-million deal.
The move comes with Pittsburgh's bid for the National League's third wild-card spot flickering a bit following a 2-7 stretch in which the bullpen has faltered repeatedly.
The trade for Weaver is the second significant acquisition by the Pirates around the deadline. Pittsburgh brought in former All-Star reliever Camilo Doval from the New York Yankees on Saturday. Doval allowed a run in one inning of work in his Pirates' debut in a loss to Cincinnati on Sunday.

More relevant of the two: the Rays are getting a big boost behind the plate while the Yankees still don't have an answer beyond Austin Wells. Jeff Passan says that they've arranged an all-Florida swap with the Marlins for Liam Hicks, who has broken out with 2.5 rWAR and a 124 OPS+ in 101 games. He's 27 but is under team control through 2030. Ack. 2023 first-round pick Brayden Taylor is among the three players going to Miami per Will Salmon Sammon. Ack. The other trade of the moment has the Giants sending Robbie Ray to the Padres, to which we say… "alrighty then." You do you, Preller.
1:50 PM EST: Perhaps take it with a grain of salt, but Bob Nightengale reports that the expectation is that Tigers starter Casey Mize will be moved before the deadline, and that the Diamondbacks are among the teams interested. Whether the Tigers would go into full sell mode after dealing Tarik Skubal has been a major topic of conversation in the last two days, and so far, they've yet to trade off anyone other than their ace.

A series loss in Cincinnati and yet another injury blow will not deter the Pirates from buying at the trade deadline.
Despite falling a game below .500, the Pirates are looking to add more pieces to their roster ahead of the 6 p.m. ET buzzer, a source familiar with the situation told Pittsburgh Baseball Now.
The Pirates made a notable move on Saturday, when they acquired right-handed reliever Camilo Doval from the Yankees for a pair of prospects. Among the other additions Pittsburgh has made so far this month are infielder Jacob Gonzalez, left-hander Brandon Eisert and right-hander Ron Marinaccio. But it's not yet enough.
This is the second time general manager Ben Cherington has been looking to add pieces at the deadline and not subtract. The other was in 2024, and if the Pirates want to be serious contenders, they can't repeat what they did two years ago.
That year, the Pirates were teetering between buying and selling but entered the deadline a couple games over .500. To bolster its roster, Pittsburgh acquired infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa from the Blue Jays, outfielder Bryan De La Cruz from the Marlins and left-handed reliever Jalen Beeks from the Rockies.

The Pittsburgh Pirates had been setting themselves up to be buyers at the trade deadline, and well before the cutoff of team-to-team transactions on Monday evening.
On Saturday afternoon, the Pirates acquired Camilo Doval from the New York Yankees in exchange for a pair of prospects.
This is now Doval's second time in as many years being traded to a new team ahead of the deadline. Even though the pitcher has bounced around the league, Doval's focus is just trying to control what he can.
"In this game, things like that are gonna happen; just getting traded, "said Doval through his interpreter on Sunday.
"The way I see it is just to control the stuff, the things that I can control, and that's gonna happen. Some people are going to make decisions, and I just have to do my job, control myself."

CHICAGO — A lot of Yankees fans are probably thinking that general manager Brian Cashman's one and only trade-deadline accomplishment so far was giving often-struggling reliever Camilo Doval a one-way ticket to Pittsburgh on Saturday.
That's not entirely true.
The two-prospect return from the Pirates includes Omar Alonzo, a Double-A catcher who will be easy to root for. The reason doesn't have anything to do with the fact that he was Pittsburgh's No. 14 prospect in MLB Pipeline rankings or that he comes from a family that has past and present big-league catchers.
Alonzo, 22, is a native of Venezuela who lost his mother and teenage sister in a series of deadly earthquakes that struck his country on June 24.
Patricia de Alonzo, 50, and Eliana Alonzo, 16, were last seen alive at a hotel in La Guaira, Venezuela. The hotel was completely destroyed by a June 24 earthquake.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are buying at the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline, as it was announced today from Jeff Passan the Buccos acquired relife pitcher Camilo Doval from the New York Yankees. In return, the Bucs send two Minor Leaguers in catcher Omar Alfonzo and outfielder Luis Cruz. New York has also agreed to pay a portion of Doval's salary.
The 29-year-old right-handed reliever has elite velocity, touching 101 mph and throwing a fastball, cutter, ans slider. He has 3.53 career ERA and 393 strikeouts in 326 innings, but he hasn't been great since coming to New York last season, finishing with a 4.84 ERA last year and holding a 4.54 one this year.
This deal has been described as being one with "high-upside risk" as Doval has loads of arm talent and potential to be a key piece in Pittsburgh's bullpen. In 2023 as a member of the San Francisco Giants, the 29-year-old righty was an All-Star closer before being traded to the Yankees in the Summer of 2025. His stuff which includes a cutter that regularly touches triple digits, a sinker that sits at 98mph and an incredible cutter gives him the tools to be very effective on the mound. His results since arriving in the Bronx is why the Pirates were able to buy low with him, because he's had lots of problems with consistency.
Doval's rough adjustment to New York could be that it just wasn't the right environment for him. Going from San Francisco which is a pitcher friendly ballpark to the Yankees' shallow outfield could be why he struggled. Regardless the Pirates add another arm to what has been a struggling bullpen. Doval fits the mold that a player like Aroldis Chapman provides to the backend of the bullpen. His blazing pitch speed is pure power in late game situations, and could be beneficial in high leverage situations. Although he struggled at Yankee Stadium it's worth nothing that he's been very good on the road with a 1.86 ERA and just one homer allowed in 19 1/3 innings. The change of scenery and a great pitching staff could be exactly what Doval needs to get back to his All-Star ways. If he can find consistency, he could be a key contributor in helping the Pirates reach the playoffs for the first time in 11 years.
Mike Axisa of CBS Sports gave the Pirates an A grade on the trade, citing the low cost as one of the big factors that makes this trade a win for Pittsburgh.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz left Wednesday night's game against the Boston Red Sox with a bruised forearm after being hit by a pitch.
Kurtz was batting in the first inning with a 3-2 count when he was struck on the left forearm by a 95 mph sinker thrown by Red Sox starter Patrick Sandoval.
Kurtz had just come off the injured list on Saturday after being out with a right thumb sprain.
Kurtz is batting .260, leads the A's with 21 home runs and is third in the majors with 77 walks.

Mexico all but booked their ticket to the Quarterfinals of the CONCACAF U20 Championship after defeating Costa Rica by a 2-0 score. Mexico overcame going down to 10 players to get a victory that place them at 6 points, basically guaranteeing them to be at worst one of the two best third placed teams and thus the ticket to the Quarterfinals. Mexico will look to win the group against Guatemala on Thursday while Costa Rica faces off against Antigua and Barbuda earlier that day.
The 1st half started with Mexico coming out with most of the starting 11 from their opener against Antigua and Barbuda. Off a free kick, a cross into the area was almost deflected in by Gabriel Sibaja, as Costa Rica had the first chance of the match. Off a counter, Kionell Estrada got off a right footed shot in the area that went wide. A right footed shot from outside the area from Hugo Camberos went well wide. Both teams traded possession as the match became very even. A bad clearance allowed Matias Cordero to get the ball in the area but his shot was well saved by Mexico's goalkeeper, Juan Liceaga. After a harsh foul, there was a short scuffle between teams that ended with David Carro getting a Yellow card. The match continued to be extremely chippy as Mexico couldn't get going against Costa Rica's physical play. From outside the area, Samir Inda got off a great left footed shot that was deflected off the post. Mexico started to dominate possession as Costa Rica sat back and waited to counter. After a cross into the area was won by Santiago Sandoval, he would get brought down in the area by Adrian Espinoza and a Penalty Kick was given to Mexico. Hugo Camberos stepped up to take the PK and got off a thunderous right footed shot that went past Costa Rica's goalkeeper, Ian O'Rourke to score and give Mexico the 1-o lead. From outside the area, Juan Echivelstre got off a great right footed shot that forced O'Rourke to make a great save. Emmanuel Hernandez answered with a right footed shot from outside the area that Liceaga made a great save on it. The halftime whistle blew and after a slow start to the match, Mexico ended the half being the better team.
The 2nd half started with Mexico subbing out Carlos Hernandez for Yohan Orozco. Strangely three minutes into the half, Mexico subbed out Aldahir Valenzuela (possibly because of an injury) for Diego Reyes. A bad clearance from Liceaga ended up with him clearing the ball and kicking Sibaja in the face which earned him a straight red card. It was a terrible mistake from the goalkeeper that now placed the match in extreme danger with only 10 players. Mexico would sub out Juan Sigala for Cristo Navarrate, which because of the strange substitution of Valenzuela, meant that Mexico only had one window for subs for the rest of the match. Off a counter, Inda would make a great pass to Santiago Sandoval, whose left footed shot would be deflected by Emmanuel Brenes past O'Rourk and into the net to score and give Mexico the surprising 2-0 l

Once again on Monday night, New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe came under immense scrutiny regarding his defensive miscue. However, the Chicago White Sox failed to make a comeback out of it.
In the ninth inning with one out remaining and the Yankees leading by five runs, Volpe dropped a routine fly ball off Colson Montgomery. As a result, White Sox's leading runner, Sam Antonacci, came around to score as the game continued. Yankees reliever Camilo Doval was taken out of the game, and David Bednar had to walk in to get the final out. In the end, the Yankees won 9-5.
Despite Volpe's error not impacting the result of the game significantly, the Yankees shortstop received harsh treatment from fans.
"The never ending proof of why he should be nowhere near the majors. HE IS NOT FIT FOR THIS LEVEL OF BALL Yankees!!!" one fan wrote. "Can somebody, ANYBODY, send him down for good or trade him already?!?!? What's it gonna take?!?!?"
"He had no business trying to catch that. Jazz [Chisholm Jr.] should've been there or an outfielder. This is ridiculous," another added.

The Boston Red Sox have now won 11 of their last 13 games, finishing off a second sweep in a row by defeating the Chicago White Sox today, 2-1. Even with their battered starting rotation, they held firm, keeping Chicago to one run.
What helped immensely was the newly reinstated Patrick Sandoval dominating in his first outing since his Tommy John surgery in 2024, giving Boston another starter to rely on, and potentially flip.

Sandoval sat out all of last season, and started his rehab at AA Portland at the beginning of this one. There, he had 1.13 ERA, 11 Ks and a WHIP of 0.500 over eight innings in two starts. He then moved on to AAA Worcester, where things got a bit rocky.

As a rule, only scoring two runs in a three-game series isn’t a successful strategy, and this series wasn’t the exception that proved that rule.
The White Sox fell behind 2-0 in the fourth when starter Anthony Kay issued a dreaded leadoff walk, followed by a 379-foot shot into the left-field stands by Caleb Durbin. Those would be the only costly mistakes in Kay’s 5 1/3 innings of work, but they were enough, given the feeble state of the offense.
Facing a middish lefty for the third straight game, the Chicago offense sputtered once again, this time against Patrick Sandoval in his first major league game after an injury hiatus of more than two years. Didn’t get shut out this time, though, like last night. Not at all.
Instead, the mighty power lineup that’s fourth in the majors in homers scored an actual run by playing a ball so small it was almost invisible to the naked eye. Luisangel Acuña led off the fifth with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, then to third on another wild pitch — though he was given credit for a stolen base because he might have been headed that way when the pitch went through — and scored when pinch hitter Andrew Benintendi checked his swing and dribbled the ball toward third at an awesome 42 mph.

There's good news regarding a Red Sox pitcher prior to the All-Star break. Patrick Sandoval, out of action since June 2024, will make his 2026 debut today, July 9.
Sandoval, 29, makes his return to the mound, facing the White Sox at Rate Field in Chicago. This comes after undergoing Tommy John surgery not long after signing a two-year deal with Boston in December 2024.
"This whole process has been mentally draining and challenging, obviously," Sandoval told MLB.com. "The physical stuff, the setbacks and the pain, or whatever, but it took a toll mentally, for sure, and it just taught me a lot."
Prior to signing with the Red Sox, Sandoval accumulated a 19-45 record and a 4.01 ERA with the Angels, striking out 529 batters in 107 starts. Requiring surgery in 2024, the Red Sox would sign Sandoval to a two-year, $18.25 million contract in the offseason.

NEW YORK – Camilo Doval entered Saturday’s game when the Yankees still had a chance.
The right-hander exited four runs later, along with most of an annoyed and overheated Fourth of July crowd at Yankee Stadium.
This latest pinstriped loss wasn’t all Doval’s doing, as the Yankees fell behind by six runs against the Minnesota Twins.
All four of Doval’s runs were unearned, due to second baseman Jazz Chisholm’s error to open the eighth inning.
But Doval couldn’t pick up his team, and a three-run deficit quickly became an 11-4 Yankees loss – their eighth in the last nine games and threatening to fall five games behind the Tampa Bay Rays.

One of the things that wears on you in stretches like this is the recaps actually start to annoy you. Look, I get it, I’m a silly little baseball blogger, I’m not an ER nurse working a double shift or a teacher paying for their own Elmer’s glue while kids can no longer sound out unfamiliar words. My work here is reasonably low stakes. But my oh my are these games absolute drags to try and ****** yze. The Yankees lost again, badly, because the starter got set on fire and Camilo Doval cannot pitch at the major league level.
11-4 is your holiday final from the Bronx.
For Brendan Beck, it was a hang with ‘em kind of day. Called up to make a spot start with Carlos Rodón moved to the IL yesterday, and it looked like Beck was never comfortable out there. He walked the first man he saw before Byron Buxton put the Twins on the board with a double, only for Kody Clemens to take Beck deep and before an out was recorded, the Yankees were down 3-0.
Minnesota added two more home runs in the second, including Alex Jackson’s first of the year, after the top three in the Yankee order went down smoothly to start their own day. Beck managed to get through the third without further damage, but the team was down 5-0 early. I’ll be honest in that my ****** ysis is somewhat weak today as I was watching Canada put on a masterclass of a first half before fading in the second. Beck’s secondary offerings seem promising but his fastball seems awful flat for an MLB pitcher.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Red Sox are going to be without Connelly Early for a bit after the rookie lefty was placed on the IL Wednesday with elbow inflammation.
As such, the Red Sox will need to fill in his spot in the rotation. But thanks to Monday's off-day on the schedule, it's not a decision they have to make right away. It's conceivable the Sox could get by with four starters until July 11 at Citi Field against the New York Mets.
It's also possible, however, that they could insert another starter into the mix as early as Tuesday if they wish.
"We haven't gotten that far," said interim manager Chad Tracy. "We can obviously insert someone sooner (than Saturday). Patrick Sandoval would be in play, but I don't really want to get into that because he's got a start in the minor leagues (Saturday), to get the pitch count stretched further. It's not fully productive to **** ume anything. We've got to make sure he gets out of that outing healthy and feels good.
"And then once he does that, we can have more productive conversations around what we might do."

Despite having just four hits and being shutout through the first eight innings, the Yankees had multiple chances to come away with a win late in Wednesday's game against the Detroit Tigers.
But in a continuance of what's been a week to forget for the Yankees, they couldn't push a run through when they needed it most, falling 6-2 in 11 innings in their seventh straight loss.
After scoring a couple of runs to tie the game at 2-2 in the ninth, the Yankees had Anthony Volpe thrown out trying to steal second base for a pivotal second out. In the 10th, New York had a runner at third with one out (the game-winning run), but Oswaldo Cabrera and Ali Sanchez both went down swinging.
In the 11th, Camilo Doval had two outs with a runner on third, but he followed an intentional walk with two more walks, and things snowballed from there.
"Tough one… had chances in the ninth and certainly in the 10th to put it away and weren't able to do it," manager Aaron Boone said after the game. "Then we get two outs and man on third there (in the 11th) and ahead 0-2 with (Hao-Yu) Lee and can't get back in the zone.

Blanked through 8.1 innings, the Yankees got a solo homer from Amed Rosario before Jazz Chisholm Jr. manufactured the tying run on his own, with an infield single, two stolen bases and a wild pitch that scored him.
After each team blew opportunities in a scoreless 10th inning, Detroit scored four runs with two out in the 11th inning off reliever Camilo Doval, and the Tigers completed a three-game sweep with a 6-2 win at Yankee Stadium - more than half-empty by then.
That's seven straight losses by the Yankees and 10 in their last 12 games, in what has mushroomed into a stunningly brutal stretch for a club that enjoyed a three-game division lead as long ago as June 21.

The Boston Red Sox have a decision to make as one of the team's interesting pitchers nears a return from injury.
After the 2024 season, the Red Sox signed six-year Los Angeles Angels veteran pitcher Patrick Sandoval to a two-year, $18 million contract. Unfortunately, a slew of injuries has sidelined the 29-year-old since 2024, but Sandoval began a rehab ******* ignment in the minor leagues earlier this month.
Sandoval has made five minor league starts since starting his rehab ******* ignment at the beginning of June. With MLB rules dictating that a player can only remain on a rehab ******* ignment for a maximum of 30 days, the Red Sox will have to decide whether to activate Sandoval soon.
MassLive's Chris Cotillo believes that even when the Red Sox call up Sandoval, his role will be unclear, especially with how well Boston's starting rotation has been performing recently.

In a bullpen game, the WooSox ended up fending off the IronPigs in extra innings. (Phillies AAA) Just as Nathan Hickey (who homered) and Vinny Capra (who drove in the game’s opening run) helped put some early runs on the board, they helped put plenty of padding on during a tenth inning offensive outburst with a knock apiece. It’s also notable that Kristian Campbell contributed in his own way by drawing three walks. This hefty lead allowed Kyle Keller to come in for a second inning and struck out two to slam the door and increase his total to four.
In a Patrick Sandoval rehab apperance in which a homer was his only hit allowed, the Sea Dogs were not as lucky, or rather, skillful at generating offense, in the tenth inning as Worcester was. The Patriots (Yankees AA) scored a run in the tenth off of Cooper Adams and the Sea Dogs couldn’t answer. In fact, the inning was a continuation of a pretty poor night where they struck out 14 times and had just 4 hits… even if one came from a budding Stanley Tucker. Romy Gonzalez would reach on an error and end up scoring. The Sea Dogs giving up walks, eight on the night, to be exact, was also a factor in the loss.
I’m going to be honest: I don’t have much hope for Patrick Sandoval. It was a bad contract with limited upside from the jump. Even if you’re among the last stragglers of belief in the 2026 Red Sox season (I’m not), this is not the place for Sandoval to make a resurgence. It’s great he’s pitching again and that he is about to come back from injury after such a long road. But he likely won’t make an impact on this ball club.
Greenville has now been outscored 24-6 in three games. Dylan Brown just allowed too many runs while striking out seven BlueClaws (Phillies High-A). The Blue Claws had 16 hits on the night and simply overpowered the Drive, and nothing of substance was happening with just five hits and stranding ten runners.
The RidgeYaks are now losers of ten straight with this shutout loss to the Nationals. Leighton Finley again pitched well in his five-inning start, not letting his four walks or one hit score and striking six out. Salem only struck out four on the night, but also had to fight for hits. And when it was time to score, the offense couldn’t be found; they put their best Red Sox costume on and went hitless in eight attempts with runners in scoring position.
