MADISON – Already in Week 2, the Wisconsin football team has been anything but immune to injuries at some key positions.
Wide receiver Malachi Coleman and linebacker Mason Posa both exited the Badgers' 36-9 win over Western Illinois with injuries. Posa could have returned if necessary, coach Luke Fickell said afterward, but Coleman could not.
Quarterback Colton Joseph, meanwhile, was "a little dinged up from last weekend," Fickell said in his postgame press conference. Fickell similarly said that running back Abu Sama III may have gotten "a little bit of a ding on the shoulder."
Those are in addition to first-team offensive lineman Emerson Mandell's continued absence as he recovers from an injury that he suffered in fall camp.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Orange missed several redzone opportunities, turned the ball over at costly times and committed numerous penalties to undo all of their hard work against the Golden Bears. A game in which the offensive numbers looked far better for Syracuse ended in a Cal 21-18 win when Golden Bears safety Kingston Lopa housed a pick six for the eventual winning score with 4:51 left in the 4th quarter.
Syracuse started the game with the ball, and fireworks showed immediately. Tylik Hill ripped a 55 yard rush on the second play of the game to immediately put the Orange in a goal-to-go situation. Syracuse couldn't convert and settled for a Tripp Woody field goal to open the scoring at 3-0.
Cal set its intentions early by playing in empty sets for much of its first drive. Although the Golden Bears got a first down, impressive pressure from Keyshawn Johnson and Dillan Fontus on 3rd down stalled the first Cal drive before midfield.

He snagged the first Orange reception of the day, going 22 yards up the right sideline. Well that was atrocious and my eyeballs hurt just from having to witness that half of a football game.
Alabama's offense opened the game with Keelon Russell taking a bad intentional grounding penalty, Daniel Hill getting dropped for a loss, then Russell getting picked off by a defensive lineman for a quick pick 6. The Tide defense did turn around and get their own pick six with Luke Metz jumping a slant route, but that was about the last good thing to happen for Alabama.
The Tide defense generally stood their ground, but one drive got extended twice one "Defensive holding" penalties, then extended again when the Tide got a stop on 4th down, but the referees decided that, somehow, replay concluded that an incomplete pass was actually a fumble, and that fumble somehow occurred over the first down line despite the player not being at the line and ball being in his back arm.
Alabama's offense did put together two decent drives, but both stalled in the redzone on the backs of multiple penalties taking away touchdowns. Just eye-gouging football to have to watch.
Then, with a chance to go down the field and take a lead before halftime, Russell overthrew Rico Scott by about 15 yards and got picked off, giving Kentucky a short field. No 10 Williams Field (Arizona Republic rankings) overcame some early penalties and turnovers to remain undefeated, downing Corona del Sol 33-23 on Friday, Sept. 11, in a 6A matchup.
The Blackhawks were able to flip the script after the first half missteps, which led to an early 10-6 Corona lead.
In the second half, the Black Hawks started gashing the Aztec defense for chunk plays that led to 27 points. Williams Field improved to 3-0, while Corona is 2-1.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — No. 7 Miami set a school record for yards and tied the mark for points in a game, with quarterbacks Darian Mensah and Luke Nickel each throwing three touchdown passes in a 77-7 victory over lower-division Florida A&M on Thursday night.
The Hurricanes finished with 856 yards, breaking the mark of 750 against Ball State in 2024. Miami had 77 points in a game twice previously, both against Savannah State. And the game was so one-sided that the teams agreed to shave five minutes off the fourth quarter, setting the clock for 10 minutes instead of the standard 15.
By then, it was 77-0. The Hurricanes (2-0) finished with 42 first downs — another school record.
"Pretty ridiculous," Mensah said when asked about a Miami offense that has scored 122 points in the season's first two games. "It's just a testament to the guys up front."

The San Francisco 49ers beat the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Thursday night to improve to 1-0 on the season, but during the game, they lost a key player who caught five touchdowns last year.
In the second quarter, 49ers tight end Jake Tonges suffered a knee injury, and trainers had to cart him back to the locker room. While he was questionable to return, he didn't play another snap in the victory.
After the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan didn't have the best injury update.

HASLETT, Mich. (WLNS) – A battle throughout the night ended with the Quakers of Lansing Eastern taking down Haslett on the pitch, 1-0. With the win over the Vikings, the Quakers remain unbeaten on the season (8-0-3).
Both goalies came up with major saves in the first half and in the last 40 minutes, the Quakers would begin to control the tempo, which led to the only goal of the game scored by Motoki Kalenga in the 67th minute.
"Things broke open in the second half," said Lansing Eastern soccer coach Luke Kane. "I think we were controlling the tempo and possession, so we knew we were going to get one eventually. We've been in a lot of these one-nothing games, very, very close games, tie games but I knew my guys would be up to it."
Kane says his team has some big goals this season including winning their league, whichever CAAC Cup they are competing for and working to claim the first district **** le in program history and he believes his team is headed in the right direction.
Lansing Eastern is back in action on September 12th when they face Holt.

The NFL staged its first-ever game in Australia as the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams visited Melbourne to play at the famed Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Netflix exclusively streamed the game, which meant the debut of broadcast pairing Noah Eagle and Luke Kuechly.
Kuechly, a former Carolina Panthers linebacker, starred in his lead ***** yst debut. Eagle, of course, is one of the fastest rising stars in the industry. At the young age of 29, he has already had plenty of primetime ***** ignments across the NFL, college football, the NBA, and the Olympics.
But on this Netflix broadcast, there was something that may have struck all the fans back home as a bit odd coming from the younger Eagle.

MILTON - It was a long offseason. Luke Richardson was starved for the end zone.
The senior receiver pulled in three touchdown grabs and amassed over 150 receiving yards as the Marshfield High football team stamped a 42-25 road victory over Milton on Thursday, Sept. 10.
Richardson, who also doubles as a basketball standout, scored on catch-and-runs spanning 54, 44 and 52 yards. He was named a Patriot League All-Star in both sports as a junior last year.
"He's shifty," said senior quarterback Nate Rollinson, who dished out five touchdown passes. "He's a great route artist. I just know I've got to get him the ball and he'll make plays."
This marks just the second time in coach Chris Arouca's nine-year tenure that Marshfield sealed a Week 1 victory.

Winning the program's first state championship in 2025 - in his first season no less - hasn't affected St. Ignatius football coach JaJuan Lawson or his Wildcats one bit. Despite losing 38 seniors to graduation, including eight All-West Catholic Athletic League performers, St. Ignatius has been perhaps the most impressive team in the WCAL through two weeks. The Wildcats have recorded back-to-back identical 42-7 wins over two-time North Bay state champions San Marin-Novato and Marin Catholic-Kentfield.
Senior running back Luke Tribolet has been a workhorse with 34 carries for 208 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Isaac Liu has been terrific with 23 completions in 32 pass attempts for 350 yards and five touchdowns, three to junior Davion Moffett.
The defense has exceeded all expectations, led by junior linebacker Jack Riedy (12 tackles) and sophomore defensive back Casey Nelson (two interceptions, two caused fumbles, two recoveries).
"I don't think winning a state ***** le created any extra pressure on these kids," Lawson said. "We play in the most difficult league in Northern California. We're trying to get back to the top of the league honestly and that's what drives us. … New group, new goals."
The new goal is getting some revenge on Friday night and to beat one of the best teams in Northern California when the Wildcats visit Acalanes-Lafayette (2-0). Aaron Rodgers has opened up about repairing his relationship with his family after years of distance. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback recently reunited with his parents and brothers. He said the process included difficult conversations but left him in a better place. Rodgers also confirmed that he has reconnected with his younger brother, Jordan Rodgers.
Rodgers discussed the family reunion on the Not Just Football podcast with Steelers teammate Cam Heyward on Thursday, Sept. 10. He said his parents, Ed and Darla Rodgers, planned to move from Chico, California, to Nashville. Rodgers recalled meeting them at the home he bought and built for them on their final day in Chico.
Rodgers said he later traveled to Nashville and met his older brother Luke Rodgers. A few weeks later, he met up with Jordan as well. "It was cool," Rodgers said of the reunions. He also admitted, "There were tough conversations for sure, but I'm just in a much better headspace."
The quarterback surprised fans in July by posting photos with his parents and Luke on Instagram. He wrote in the caption, "Another bonding week." Jordan did not appear in those photos, but Rodgers has now revealed that they have also mended their relationship. He said having his brothers, their families and his parents together has been "really, really special."
Rodgers also credited his wife, Brittani, with helping him reach a point where reconciliation became possible. Rodgers discussed the family reunion on the Not Just Football podcast with Steelers teammate Cam Heyward on Thursday, Sept. 10. He said his parents, Ed and Darla Rodgers, planned to move from Chico, California, to Nashville. Rodgers recalled meeting them at the home he bought and built for them on their final day in Chico.
Rodgers said he later traveled to Nashville and met his older brother Luke Rodgers. A few weeks later, he met up with Jordan as well. "It was cool," Rodgers said of the reunions. He also admitted, "There were tough conversations for sure, but I'm just in a much better headspace."
The quarterback surprised fans in July by posting photos with his parents and Luke on Instagram. He wrote in the caption, "Another bonding week." Jordan did not appear in those photos, but Rodgers has now revealed that they have also mended their relationship. He said having his brothers, their families and his parents together has been "really, really special."
Rodgers also credited his wife, Brittani, with helping him reach a point where reconciliation became possible. The reigning Celebration Bowl champs may only be two games into their 2026 season but they've also done a great job at showing why last year's HBCU National Championship was no fluke. Chennis Berry has built a dominant program top-to-bottom over in Orangeburg; a team that doesn't take losing well and doesn't do a whole lot of it to begin with. South Carolina State, now 2-0, appears to be steamrolling towards another stellar season. Another MEAC ***** le and trip to Atlanta may be waiting down the road and, while of course the work to get there will be difficult, there can be no debating that the Bulldogs are the top of the mountain in HBCU football at this very moment.
SC State came out of the gates blazing hot with a 87-0 victory over Savannah State (Berry's alma mater). In that game they were about as finely tuned a machine as you can get in all three phases. They racked up 627 offensive yards and amazingly enough not one individual player had more than 100 on their own in any singular category. Josh Shaw ran for three scores in that game and it wasn't even half of the total rushing touchdowns they had that day. Keely Watson completed eight passes and nearly half of those went for TDs as well. On the other side 29 different defenders logged at least one stop and three of them were responsible for takeaways. Just to stamp it they got a blocked punt returned for a score as well.
Division II opponent or not, that's the type of performance that just can't be ignored and it was followed up by another smothering performance against Florida A&M on Sunday in the Orange Blossom Classic. Down in Miami the Bulldogs steamrolled again in their 31-13 victory. The defense in particular was lights out as they held the Rattlers to -1 rushing yards. Yes, negative rushing yards for the whole game as well as a mere 4-for-17 on third down. Had it not been for a flurry of penalties, SC State could have won by a heck of a lot more.
The roster is brimming with talent and it starts with running back Mason Pickett-Hicks who is averaging 156.5 yards per game. Pickett-Hicks ran for 210 yards against FAMU last weekend and was essentially unstoppable on his 17 rush attempts. He found the end zone twice and was named the MEAC Offensive Player of the Week. SC State also boasted the conference's Defensive Player of the Week with junior defensive lineman Jordan Dollard. Dollard was a game-wrecker on Sunday, posting 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He had six stops total.
Those two are just a few of the playmakers the Bulldogs have at their disposal. Front to back Berry's team is loaded and, although the sample size has been small, it certainly seems like they are again the team to beat. Who, if anyone, might be able to do it?

After adding veteran safety Taylor Rapp to their practice squad on Monday, the Denver Broncos cut undrafted rookie long snapper Luke Basso to make room for Rapp, according to KUSA-TV's Mike Klis.
Basso (6-3, 246 pounds) signed with the Broncos as a UDFA out of Oregon this spring. He competed with Mitch Fraboni this summer and after both players failed to make the 53-man roster, Denver signed each to the practice squad. Fraboni is expected to eventually get fully promoted to the active roster, and Basso will likely be kept in mind in case the Broncos ever need a fill-in long snapper down the road.
Rapp becomes the second safety on the practice squad, joining seventh-round draft pick Miles Scott. It wouldn't be surprising to see Rapp eventually fully promoted to the active roster once he gets up to speed in Denver.

Amid all of the madness of last Tuesday's deadline day scramble, involving three new signings, private jets allegedly bound for Sunderland and South London, some last-minute involvement from Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and a mysterious, guru-like figure known only as Uncle Bouba, it would've been easy to wed yourself to the view that "Sunderland have panicked! We've got it wrong and this isn't how it was supposed to be with such a historic season to come!"
OK, had we actually failed to sign Belgian winger Malick Fofana after protracted moves for the likes of Geny Catamo, Igor Paixão and Dodi Lukebakio failed to materialise for one reason or another, there might've been a case in favour of that.
However, as we took to our beds on Tuesday night with Fofana and Tottenham loanee Kevin Danso on board, and young Ecuadorian forward Juan Riquelme Angulo Caicedo to follow in the early hours of Wednesday, it felt as though we'd hauled what could've been an underwhelming window up into the 7/10 bracket — not dazzling, but solid enough.
Could it have been better? Perhaps.
Could it have been even more frustrating and ultimately underwhelming? Most definitely, and it must be said that the fact we were able to retain the services of Robin Roefs, Noah Sadiki and Brian Brobbey, as well as being willing to shut down any speculation surrounding Wilson Isidor's future with a new deal, felt borderline miraculous.

Americans painted the scoreboard red at Lahinch during Sunday morning's foursomes only to be capsized by a blue wave in the afternoon singles that saw Great Britain and Ireland rally to win the 51st Walker Cup.
The home team got off to a blazing start in the final session on a gusty Irish day, winning each of the first four singles matches.
Stuart Grehan topped Preston Stout for the second straight day and Jack Whaley recorded a historic, 8-and-7 runaway victory over William Jennings.
Then came two more wins for Team GB&I — Luke Poulter beat Ethan Fang when the latter's putt on No. 17 came up just short of the hole. Moments later, Tyler Weaver closed out his match over Jay Leng Jr. with a 4-and-3 win.

No matter what may you look at it, this was a tough one. After the San Diego Padres walked off the New York Yankees on Friday night, they took a gut punch in Game 2, losing 5-1. Much of that was thanks to starter Robbie Ray failing to get out of the third inning.
After setting down the first three batters, Ben Rice singled to lead off the second inning. Ray got the next two batters out before giving up a double, three consecutive walks and a two-run single. Ray's command completely eluded him, after he had looked strong to start the night. That, along with a quiet offense, marked the death of the Padres on Saturday night. They'll now face New York in the rubber match this afternoon, trying to win their first series in two weeks.
Cole spent the beginning of 2026 stuck on the injured list. The veteran's first start of the year came on May 22 after receiving from Tommy John surgery. He's been solid in that time, pitching to a 3.29 ERA through 104 innings. The strikeout numbers are modest, with 110 K's in that same time.
But, in his last seven starts. Cole has turned up his game. He's pitched to a 2.36 ERA across 42 innings. That being said, the last two games have been his worst in that time. Cole has surrendered six runs over his last 11 1/3 innings, giving up three runs in each of his two recent starts. San Diego will try to take advantage of that to win the series finale.

Matt Campbell was far from the being the only coach to have a solid showing in his debut with his new school. His predecessor at Penn State ended up having a pretty big day as well.
James Franklin won his head coaching debut with Virginia Tech on Saturday behind an offensive explosion against VMI. Virginia Tech's 73-3 victory was fueled in part by a handful of notable performances by some former Penn State players who chose to follow Franklin from Happy Valley to Blacksburg.
Ethan Grunkemeyer, now Virginia Tech's starting quarterback, passed for 224 yards and 2 touchdowns before giving way to his backup in the second half. Tight end Luke Reynolds was Virginia Tech's second-leading receiver with 5 catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kazuma Okamoto had four hits and two RBIs, including a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning, as the surging Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Saturday night to pull even with Cleveland for the final American League playoff spot.
Toronto (72-71) won for the seventh time in eight games and moved over .500 for the first time since the Blue Jays were 4-3 on April 3. The defending AL champions, who were 10 games under .500 on July 28, are tied with the Guardians for the league's third wild card.
Okamoto went 4 for 5 with a double and broke a 3-all tie in the seventh with an RBI single. In the third inning, Okamoto hit an RBI double that hit third base over a diving Josh Rojas and rolled into the left-field corner.

Duke won its fifth consecutive season opener with a 17-3 win over the Tulane Green Wave. Running back Nate Sheppard was the star with 35 carries for 227 yards and two touchdowns. He also had three receptions for 19 yards. Quarterback Walker Eget never seemed to get into a groove as he completed 13 of 26 pass attempts for 131 yards.
Play Number One: With five minutes and seven seconds remaining in the 1st quarter, on the game's opening drive, Nate Sheppard rushed nine yards for a touchdown to complete a 17 play, 75-yard drive to give Duke a 7-0 lead. The opening drive set the tone for the game as Duke leaned on its running game to control the game.
Play Number Two: With six minutes and 56 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter, defensive lineman David Anderson deflected pass attempts on back-to-back plays to prevent Tulane from making a 1st down and forcing a field goal attempt. The attempt was no good.
Play Number Three: On the opening drive of the 2nd half, on 2nd down and five, Tulane completed a pass but Duke linebacker Luke Mergott forced a fumble which was recovered by linebacker Nick Morris at the Duke 17-yard line to stop the drive.
