A call option contract offers its buyer and seller two different roles. The call buyer pays a fee up front for the right to buy shares at a set price, called the strike price, before the contract expires. The call seller, also known as the writer, collects that fee and takes on the obligation to deliver the shares at the set price if the buyer exercises their right.
At expiration, the call buyer comes out ahead only if the stock rises above the strike price by more than the fee paid. The call writer generally wants the stock to finish at or below the strike price, so they keep the full premium collected.
Let's follow an Nvidia call option through its entire life cycle to see exactly what both sides agree to, what they may gain, and what they risk losing.

Q: Ira, I remember we used the Duncan Robinson trade exception to take in Bobby Portis Jr. Are there any plans to use the Haywood Highsmith trade exception before that expires? – Dan.
A: For those unaware, the Heat hold a $5.6 million trade exception from last summer's salary dump of Haywood Highsmith to the Nets, an exception that expires on Aug. 17. The reality is that because the Heat are hard-capped by virtue of the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade, they have more exception money at the moment than they can use, now just about $10 million below that hard cap. In addition to the Highsmith trade exception, the Heat have almost $9 million remaining from their mid-level exception and the $5.5 million bi-annual exception. Plus, they can sign players to the veteran minimum without regard to exception money. Worth noting, however, is that exceptions cannot be aggregated. The Heat have multiple means to spend, just not much in total to spend.
Submit your "Ask Ira" question here!
Q: Ira, there is all kinds of stuff all over the internet concerning a three-way trade involving Nikola Jovic, Klay Thompson and a third player. I know I shouldn't believe the internet, but if something like that did happen, would the Heat still be able to add DeMar DeRozan or someone similar? – Rich, Plantation.
A: Yes. In fact, currently at 12 players under standard contract, the Heat, by NBA rule, have to add at least two more players under standard contract (they can, in fact, add three, with the regular-season roster limit of 15 players under standard deals).

SC Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu has concrete offers from three clubs on the table, according to Kicker.
The German publication reports that Bournemouth, Napoli and Olympique Marseille have all made proposals to the 24-year-old goalkeeper and his management.
Atubolu has reportedly been offered the chance to become the first-choice goalkeeper at both Napoli and Marseille, while Bournemouth would offer him an open competition with Djordje Petrovic for the starting spot.
Reports have previously claimed that Atubolu's representatives were in Italy earlier this week for talks with Napoli.
Freiburg are reportedly demanding €15-20 million for Atubolu. It has been clear for some time that the goalkeeper wants to leave the club one year before his contract expires, with Freiburg having already signed Mio Backhaus as his replacement.

The biggest departure from the Manchester City squad that could occur this summer is midfield general Rodri. At this stage of the summer transfer window, Rodri's future remains uncertain. He has one more year remaining on his current contract with City and a return to Spain has long been mooted for the Ballon d'Or-winning midfielder. It has now been reported that Barcelona, rather than Real Madrid, have agreed personal terms with Manchester City's midfield general. Also, another report indicates that Rodri is set to meet with Enzo Maresca when he returns to Manchester City early next week. Whatever occurs, it does seem like next week is a critical juncture in the future of Rodri.
Ben Jacobs has reported that Rodri is set to hold talks over his future with Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca in the coming days. Rodri is currently on holiday after his efforts for Spain at the World Cup. Furthermore, Jacobs reports that Real Madrid and Barcelona are both eager to sign Rodri this summer. It is also reported by Jacobs that Manchester City are relaxed about the situation surrounding Rodri. If Rodri doesn't depart the club this summer City aren't concerned about the possibility of losing Rodri for free when his contract expires next summer.
Pol Ballús and Mario Cortegana have reported for The Athletic that Barcelona are exploring the possibility of signing Rodri. Furthermore, it is reported that Barcelona have held talks with Rodri's camp and that Rodri's preference is to sign for Barcelona instead of Real Madrid. Rodri believes that Barcelona's playing style and the fact that eight members of Spain's World Cup squad play at Barcelona means he would make a smooth transition into their squad.
Lastly, Fabrizio Romano has reported that Rodri has in fact agreed personal terms with Barcelona. Romano further reports that negotiations between Manchester City and Barcelona over a deal for Rodri are imminent and that Barcelona want to sign Rodri as soon as possible.
Ever since the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended, Rodri has seemed destined to leave Manchester City. The reports that linked Manchester City's midfield general with a move to Real Madrid have been constant. However, it now looks like Barcelona are the front-runners to sign Manchester City's midfield general. On that front, it remains to be seen if Barcelona could afford to pay Manchester City's asking price for the Ballon d'Or-winning midfielder. Before that plays out, Rodri is set to meet Enzo Maresca over his future.

The first hint came in April, when Joe Buck declared that he'd like to spend the rest of his career at ESPN — with the caveat that no talks had commenced on a contract that expires after the upcoming season.
With the upcoming season coming very soon, both Buck and on-air partner Troy Aikman are entering the final years of their deals together.
Via Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports, CAA now represents both Buck and Aikman. As McCarthy notes, it's possible that CAA will negotiate them as a package deal.
Both signed five-year deals for Monday Night Football in 2022. ESPN pays Aikman $18 million per year, while Buck gets $15 million annually.
It's hard to imagine both leaving, primarily since there won't be many high-rent spots where both could go together.

WEST LAFAYETTE — Welcome to a big day in Purdue Athletics history.
Tommy McClelland will be introduced at 11 a.m. Thursday as the next Purdue athletic directory. McClelland takes over for the retiring Mike Bobinski, whose time will end when 2026 expires. And McClelland will have many opportunities to point his stamp on Boilermaker programs.
The 44-year-old McClelland has a rich background in athletics. He was the youngest NCAA Division-I AD when hired to lead McNeese State in his native Louisiana at age 26. He since reached the Power Four level as deputy athletic director at Vanderbilt, where he was a key fundraiser for facility upgrades and the beginning of Clark Lea's hiring as football coach.
Purdue will be his first gig north of the Mason-Dixon line, but stays in tune with universities that emphasize academics. He most recently served as Rice's athletic director, making Purdue his third straight stop at a prestigious ******* ociation of American Universities.
McClelland's background brings several items that may explain why Purdue hired him — the fifth Purdue AD since World War II. We hope to learn today more about McClelland's vision for Purdue Athletics, why he was selected and more. Interim President Mitch Daniels is among those expected to speak at today's press conference.

FC Barcelona striker Ferran Torres has agreed to join European rival Paris Saint-Germain according to SPORT, which cited anonymous sources.
FC Barcelona striker Ferran Torres has agreed to join European rival Paris Saint-Germain according to SPORT, which cited anonymous sources.
Those sources, close to the negotiations, say that Ferran has already given PSG permission to "activate all its machinery" and begin talks with Barça, which has been angered by the striker's decision to discuss his future in public.
Ferran is currently in the last 11 months of his contract which expires on June 30, 2027. The Catalans would like to extend his terms but can't do that until September owing to Financial Fair Play issues.
Furthermore, Ferran's pay demands have to fall in line with his standing in Hansi Flick's squad. He's seen as no more as a secondary member of it, just as he was when Robert Lewandowski was still around ahead of leaving for the Chicago Fire once his own terms expired.

Learn more: Best life insurance companies this year
A term life insurance policy is pretty simple to understand. When you apply for a policy, you'll determine how much coverage you need, as well as the policy's term, i.e., the length. Typical terms are 10, 20, and 30 years. You'll pay premiums to the life insurance company, usually monthly or annually, to keep the policy in force.

SpaceX stock is about to get a shock that could bring it back down to earth. On Thursday, the company's first stock "lockup" expires, meaning employees and early investors who've been barred from selling their shares since the IPO can finally cash out.
Here's why that matters: 912 million shares, more than double what's currently tradable, become available all at once, according to the New York Times. Lockups exist to prevent a flood of insider selling from tanking a stock right after it goes public. Once they expire, that flood often happens anyway, and prices tend to drop.
SpaceX's stock has already fallen nearly 50% from its post-IPO high, a slide that recently cost Elon Musk his trillionaire status. The company went public in June with the biggest IPO in history, raising $85.7 billion and briefly touching a $2 trillion valuation. Since then, skepticism has crept in. Nearly $25 billion worth of **** eX stock, more than a third of its tradable shares, is currently held by short sellers betting the price keeps falling.
One Morgan Stanley **** yst says the stock could realistically drop to $100, even as he remains bullish long-term. For a company that made history two months ago, this could be a rough landing.

Aston Martin team principal Adrian Newey insists he is "pretty confident" that Fernando Alonso will extend his time with the team beyond this season.
Alonso, the 45-year-old two-time world champion, has stated he will decide his future over the summer break and is contemplating retiring from Formula 1 after more than two decades in the sport.
Aston, with new engine partners Honda, have endured a horrendous start to the 2026 season, with safety concerns, car reliability and all-out speed among a myriad of issues for a team who were hoping to be challenging at the top this year. Instead, they are the slowest team alongside Cadillac at the rear of the field.
Yet F1 design guru Newey, who has been tasked with turning Aston's fortunes around, believes Alonso will persevere with the outfit and drive for the team beyond his current contract, which expires at the end of the season.
"I mean, obviously Fernando's an amazing driver, brings huge amounts to the team, both in his feedback and his ability," Newey said.

A covered call ETF is a fund that owns a portfolio of stocks — often an index like the S&P 500 or Nasdaq-100 — and simultaneously sells (or "writes") call options — either on those individual holdings or on the index itself — against that portfolio. The premiums it collects from selling those options are passed through to shareholders as income, typically paid monthly. That option income is what powers the eye-catching yields these funds advertise.
The strategy is called covered because the fund actually owns the underlying stocks it's writing options against as opposed to a naked call, where the seller doesn't own the shares. Owning the stock covers the obligation, capping the risk of the options position itself.
To understand the yield, you need to understand what a call option is. When you sell a call option, you give the buyer the right to purchase a stock from you at a set price (the "strike price") at or before a set date. In exchange, the buyer pays you a fee upfront, known as the premium.
If the stock stays below the strike price, the option expires worthless, the buyer walks away, and you keep the premium as pure profit. A covered call ETF does this over and over, month after month, across its entire portfolio, collecting a steady stream of premiums that it distributes to shareholders. That's the income engine.
The premium is larger when the underlying stock is more volatile — which is why covered call funds on volatile **** ets (tech stocks, or single names) can advertise dramatically higher yields than those on the broad, steadier S&P 500.

SKYRIZI supplies close to a third of guided company revenue, which puts an unusual amount of AbbVie's future behind one patent estate.
AbbVie (ABBV) has guided total 2026 revenue to roughly $67.6 billion. About $21.7 billion of that, close to one-third, is expected to come from a single medicine, SKYRIZI. That share is the number a holder should sit with before anything else in this story.
The quarterly picture has the same shape. SKYRIZI sold $5.5 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 24% operationally, against total net revenues of nearly $17 billion, and the next largest product AbbVie broke out, RINVOQ, sold more than $2.5 billion. Immunology as a whole brought in nearly $8.8 billion, more than half the company, on 14.6% operational growth. What makes that concentration matter is what sits beside it: oncology revenue of more than $1.6 billion fell 2.4% operationally in the same three months, and aesthetics, at nearly $1.3 billion, slipped 0.9%. Neuroscience did grow, at more than $3.2 billion and roughly 20%. So the growth you are paying for sits in immunology and neuroscience, and inside the bigger of the two it leans mostly on one molecule.
AbbVie does not have to imagine what biosimilar entry does to a large immunology franchise, because it is happening on its own income statement right now. HUMIRA sold $756 million in the second quarter of 2026, down 36% operationally, which the company puts down to biosimilar competition. A franchise shedding better than a third of its sales year over year is the shape of the risk, not its timing, because the two products sit on very different clocks.
SKYRIZI's clock is public and much further out. The company says the US composition-of-matter patent expires in 2033, that later-expiring patents embodying the product are granted or in process and run into the mid twenty-thirties and later, that regulatory data protection does not lapse until 2031, and that it does not expect biosimilar applications before the end of the decade. That is a long runway by any standard. It is also why the question keeps coming back, because close to a third of today's guided revenue eventually sits behind that later intellectual property rather than behind the original patent.

WASHINGTON, Aug 3 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's bid to install Lindsey Graham's sister as South Carolina's next senator has met unexpected resistance from Republican voters and rivals, setting up a crowded primary that will test the limits of Trump's political influence in one of his strongest states.
After Senator Lindsey Graham died on July 11 at age 71 from a heart ailment, Governor Henry McMaster appointed his sister, Darline Graham, to serve the remainder of his term, which expires in January.
Trump called the appointment a "fabulous tribute" and urged voters to elect her to a full six-year term in the August 11 special election, promising his "Complete and Total Endorsement."
Some Republicans say Darline Graham is a fitting caretaker for her brother's seat but oppose Trump's push to elect her to a full term, arguing voters should choose from a field that remains crowded despite the president's endorsement.

Couples aged 65+ can withdraw $46,700 from a traditional IRA in 2026 and owe $0 in federal income tax, thanks to stacked deductions.
Most retirees leave this ***** e unused by waiting for RMDs at 73, risking larger future distributions that push them into higher tax brackets.
The same $46,700 ceiling applies to tax-free Roth conversions, but the senior bonus deduction enabling it expires after 2028, making each year count.

A married couple in which both spouses are 65 or older can withdraw roughly $46,700 from a traditional IRA in 2026 and owe nothing in federal income tax on the withdrawal. The figure is the sum of deductions the IRS already allows this year, stacked in a way that most retirees never fully use. The tax-free ***** e exists whether it is claimed or not, and unclaimed ***** e in a low-bracket year does not roll forward. It simply expires.

Some Republicans say Darline Graham is a fitting caretaker for her brother's seat but oppose Trump's push to elect her to a full term, arguing voters should choose from a field that remains crowded despite the president's endorsement.

Once this offseason comes and the collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1, there will be a lockout in Major League Baseball. Owners will use the Dodgers' spending and winning as a cudgel to try to advance their proposals.
Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman pushed back against criticism of the team's latest move, acquiring ace Tarik Skubal for three players on Sunday.
"It just seems like there's always blowback with us," Friedman said. "There's nothing that we did that no one else couldn't have done."
Alden González at ESPN has more on that side of Freidman's Sunday media scrum.
Ken Rosenthal at The Athletic wrote about how cries of the Dodgers ruining baseball will increase after the Skubal trade, even though the move guarantees nothing. Rosenthal wrote about how the Dodgers' financial largesse is certainly an advantage, but the specific Skubal trade was one that many other teams could make:

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Representatives from the Trail Blazers met with Portland city councilors on Thursday to discuss a new lease and the commitment of public funds to renovate the aging Moda Center.
The public work session comes amid the contentious negotiations over the $600 million renovation project, part of striking a long-term lease agreement with the Blazers. A current bridge lease expires in 2030.
The state has already pledged $365 million toward the deal, provided Portland contributes $120 million and Multnomah County also provides funds.
New Blazers owner Tom Dundon has previously said in interviews that he would commit to a 20-year lease that would keep the team in Portland if the state, city and county agree to fund the renovation of the Moda Center, the oldest arena in the NBA that hasn't been upgraded.
An early draft term sheet included funding caps and said any cost overruns should be paid for by the team.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers nose tackle Vita Vea is now missing training camp for a different reason.
One day after reports emerged that the two-time Pro Bowler had requested a trade from the Bucs, head coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday that Vea "tweaked something" in his back during Tuesday's conditioning run at the start of training camp.
Bowles also announced that LT Tristan Wirfs suffered a hamstring injury during the same conditioning run, calling Wirfs "day to day."
It's not clear how serious Vea's injury is, although Bowles didn't appear concerned and the fact that Vea attempted the conditioning run at least suggests he was willing to participate in part of camp activities. Neither Vea nor Wirfs practiced Wednesday, although Vea was seen engaging with teammates on the field through defensive line drills.
Bowles also said that the Bucs have not engaged in any internal or external trade talk to this point with Vea. The two sides have been at odds over Vea's contract, which is set to pay him $17 million in 2026 and expires after this coming season.

FIFA said Tuesday it plans to sell a stake in the business operations of the World Cup and its other competitions through the creation of a semi-private subsidiary.
World football's governing body said it would retain a majority share in FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) but hoped to raise $4.2 billion later this year by "carefully selecting long-term investors who will purchase minority, non-controlling interests".
FIFA's statement was a rapid response to a story in British newspapers The Times and The Financial Times based on leaks of the plan from two sources.
The Times reported that FIFA president Gianni Infantino, 56, stood to profit from the scheme by becoming commissioner of the FFE after his expected next term expires in 2031. FIFA denied that this had been discussed.
The article also said discussion had started with financial advisors and potential investors.

According to SPORT, FC Barcelona do not consider Ferran Torres' future to be an immediate issue. The club have already outlined their strategy regarding the forward and have no intention of changing course.
Ferran's current contract expires on 30 June, and Barcelona have informed his representatives that they are willing to offer him a new deal.
However, formal negotiations are expected to begin in September in order to avoid complications linked to the club's salary cap.
It is an approach the club has followed before and one that will also apply to Marc Bernal, who is awaiting an improved contract extension.
If Ferran wishes to leave, whether because of reported interest from PSG or any other club, Barça believe the initiative must come from the player. He would need to request a meeting with the club to discuss his future and reach a decision.

Real Madrid are a couple of signings away from building a squad that Jose Mourinho will be content with taking into the new season, which gets underway in a few weeks' time. The hope is that Yan Diomande will be done in the next 48 hours, after which the club can turn their full attention to the pursuit of Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri.
Real Madrid had originally ruled out signing Rodri this summer, but after being priced out of a move for Enzo Fernandez, they have decided to go after the 2026 World Cup Golden Ball winner. An agreement on personal terms is already in place, with the 30-year-old very keen on a return to the Spanish capital, where he was previously with Atletico Madrid.
There is no doubt that Real Madrid are favourites to sign Rodri, who is looking more and more likely to leave Man City this summer. His unwillingness to extend his stay beyond 2027 – when his current contract expires – has alerted several clubs' attention, and while Paris Saint-Germain has been one of them, it's now been reported by Le Parisien (via Diario AS) that the reigning back-to-back European champions have ended their interest.
PSG had recognised that Rodri would be a market opportunity, but ultimately, they have decided that midfield is an area that they do not need to address this summer. That leaves Real Madrid with a free run at the world champion, although there is no guarantee that an agreement with Man City is reached in the coming weeks.
The latest is that Real Madrid are ready to pay up to €60m to sign Rodri this summer, but Man City's current stance is that any offers below €80m will not be considered. Bernabeu officials must now hope that the Premier League giants relax their stance in the coming weeks, otherwise they may need to wait until 2027 to secure his services.

While much of the attention surrounding Bayern Munich’s front office has centered on player transfers and squad planning, another important piece of the club’s future could soon be addressed behind the scenes.
According to a report from Sport Bild (as captured by iMiaSanMia), sporting director Christoph Freund is in an excellent position to earn a contract extension. Although his current deal runs through 2027, decisions regarding his future will be made by Bayern Munich’s executive board — Jan-Christian Dreesen, Max Eberl, and Rouven Kasper — rather than the club’s supervisory board. That confidence appears to be well deserved:
Christoph Freund’s contract also expires in 2027. His future is not decided by the supervisory board, but by the executive board (Dreesen, Eberl & Rouven Kasper). Freund has extremely good prospects of a new contract. His work with the first team and the Campus, where he has been given more responsibility, is highly valued at the club.
Since arriving at Bayern Munich, Freund has become an increasingly important figure within the club’s sporting structure. While much of his work has focused on supporting the first team alongside Eberl, his responsibilities have expanded beyond the senior squad. His involvement with Bayern’s Campus and youth development system has reportedly been particularly well received, reflecting the club’s continued emphasis on building a sustainable pipeline of talent.
That dual role is significant. Bayern Munich has long prided itself on balancing immediate success with long-term planning, and having executives who can oversee both first-team recruitment and player development is critical to achieving that balance. Freund’s growing influence suggests the club sees him as an important part of that vision.

Working on a contract that expires at the end of this season means every move Dana Brown makes as Houston Astros general manager will be inspected closely.
Since taking over the job in January 2023, Brown has stayed busy, making 40 trades. Fifteen of those deals have been minor with the return on one side or the other simply involving cash. However, he's taken some big swings and come up a winner like when he brought back Justin Verlander at his first trade deadline and then had the foresight to get Yusei Kikuchi into the Astros' pitching system at the 2024 deadline.
He's also whiffed, especially in this past offseason. Although it's best not to judge trades too quickly, swapping Mauricio Dubón for Nick Allen and giving up two prospects for Mike Burrows, who has struggled mightily, are both looking like bad ideas.
With the trade deadline approaching on Aug. 3, Brown - and perhaps Astros owner Jim Crane - must make a decision if the Astros, who are still six games below .500 but just 3.5 games out of first place in the American League West, should be buyers or sellers.
When he's been a buyer, Brown has proven to be able to convince teams to take prospects that haven't come back to haunt the Astros, but is the team willing to roll the dice again?

Roma has secured Zeki Celik.
According to Fabrizio Romano, everything is now finalized for the Turkish defender's contract renewal: the signatures have been finalized, and the exchange of documents between the parties has been completed.
The deal can therefore be considered concluded, and now all that's left to do is wait for the Giallorossi's announcement.
This marks a positive conclusion to negotiations that have been underway by management over the past few weeks. Celik's previous contract, signed upon his transfer from Lille in the summer of 2022, ran until June 30, 2026.
Roma has chosen to continue with the 20-year-old, avoiding losing him after the agreement expires.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has failed to reject the notion of President Donald Trump getting involved in MLB's ongoing collective bargaining agreement negotiations.
The President of the United States has become no stranger to involving himself in the behind-the-scenes negotiations in sports.
Only a matter of weeks ago was Trump involved in the FIFA U-turn to lift Folarin Balogun's suspension for the last 16 game against Belgium at the World Cup.
Whether people like it or not, the 80-year-old carries a lot of weight when it comes to situations like the MLB's negotiations.
The current CBA expires in December, but the clubs are believed to be far apart when it comes to reaching an agreement.

England and Argentina face off in the World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday night, with the winner to face European champions Spain in Sunday's final after they knocked out France.
The game is scheduled to start at 8pm BST, 2pm local time in Atlanta, but the build-up to the match has been dominated by fears around thunderstorms delaying play.
Multiple matches throughout this tournament have been delayed due to thunderstorms, including England's round of 16 clash with Mexico, which was delayed by an hour due to lightning in the area as Fifa's weather protocol was activated.
Fifa is adhering to rules set by local authorities during the tournament, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) saying that if any lightning strike is detected within eight miles of a stadium the game has to be stopped.
This sparks a countdown of 30 minutes, which resets every time another lightning strike happens. Once that timer expires, the players return to the pitch for a 15-minute warm-up.

Angelo Stiller looks increasingly likely to remain at VfB Stuttgart beyond the summer.
According to Sport Bild, the 25-year-old's €36.5 million release clause expires today, July 15.
Stuttgart no longer have to worry about potentially activating an option to buy out the clause for around €3.5 million, as they now hold all the cards regarding the midfielder's future.
As a result, interested clubs – such as Manchester United, who scouted Stiller several times last season – now face a much more difficult task if they want to sign him.
However, the report also claims that Stiller's release clause will become active again in summer 2027, when interested clubs could renew their efforts to sign him.

PHILADELPHIA — Baseball’s uncertain future briefly hung over the otherwise grandiose MLB All-Star festivities on Tuesday morning as the league’s commissioner and the head of its players union detailed the divide over a potential salary cap.
A significant gap remains between the MLB owners, who are fighting to impose a cap once the current collective bargaining agreement expires in December, and the MLB Players **** ociation, which staunchly rejects one.
MLB recently began airing “Level the Field” ads to promote public support for a cap, which interim MLBPA head Bruce Meyer took issue with.
“I have watched, over the last few years, the owners, the commissioner’s office, try to convince fans, the consumers of their product, that the product is broken,” Meyer said in downtown Philadelphia, not far from Citizens Bank Park, the site of Tuesday night’s All-Star Game.
“The supposed stewards of the game have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to convince those same fans that they don’t have hope, or they shouldn’t have hope, or that the product that they’re paying to consume in record numbers is somehow broken. I think it’s perverse.”
