It wasn't a great night for New England Patriots wide receiver Romeo Doubs, who finished with zero catches on three targets. Doubs, who the Patriots signed to a lucrative contract during the offseason, was expected to be the clear WR2, part of the reason why the Patriots moved on from Kayshon Boutte.
With A.J. Brown going down on Wednesday night during the Seattle Seahawks game, there was hope within Patriots fan circles that Doubs would step up in a major way. Instead of that being the case, he was just as bad as anybody could have imagined, and it was part of the reason why New England lost.
Instead of sugarcoating things after the game, it was positive to at least hear Doubs have some accountability for his play.
"No. Like I said, I just wasn't locked in enough on the football," Doubs said, per USA Today. "The results speak for themselves. I'll be better moving forward."

After months of speculation, the New England Patriots finally pulled the trigger in late August and traded Kayshon Boutte. The fourth-year wide receiver was sent to the Houston Texans in a package deal that included a 2028 seventh-round draft choice as well as a player the organization has apparently coveted since he entered the league as a sixth-round draft selection the previous year.
And so, Jaylen Reed now finds himself a member of the Patriots.

In each of the past two seasons, Kayshon Boutte ranked second in receiving yards among Patriots wideouts and first or tied for first in receiving touchdowns. His reward? A trade to Houston.
The Patriots traded for A.J. Brown in the offseason, signed free agent Romeo Doubs and brought back DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams and Mack Hollins. That left Boutte as the odd receiver out, and Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said in explaining the trade that Boutte "probably would have been inactive" on game days if he had remained in New England.
Boutte responded Thursday.
"They did pay two guys to come in and do that job," Boutte said, via Timothy Rapp of the Bleacher Report. "Sadly, it is the way it is. Being that it's a contract year for me, I [sought] a bigger role. I feel like what Vrabes said in his media interview, it wasn't nothing bad. I wouldn't say I'll use that as fuel. . . . It was an honest opinion. He sat there, talked, [spoke] his truth, and [we'll] pretty much move forward from it."
The Texans needed a receiver after losing Jayden Higgins to a season-ending torn ACL last month. Boutte, who has 76 receptions for 1,140 yards and nine touchdowns over the past two seasons, joins Nico Collins, Xavier Hutchinson, Jaylin Noel and Jared Wayne in the wide receivers room.

Fast-forward to this year, the Rams need better talent at "WR," and Ferguson could be the answer based on what he provided last season. Davante Adams was dangled in trade discussions open to the public after a down season beyond the goal line, and trading for Tutu Atwell on Aug. 27 is never a great sign for the rest of the room. The loss of a true breakout receiver in Jayden Higgins will have significant ramifications on the Texans' passing attack. Nico Collins is an elite top target, with Jaylin Noel and Kayshon Boutte as quality contributors. However, fantasy managers shouldn't sleep on Dalton Schultz. The veteran tight end seems like a boring pick, but he's quietly coming off a strong fantasy campaign where he averaged the 11th-most points at his position over the final 13 weeks. That included finishing tied for third in receptions among tight ends (82) and sixth in receiving yards (777). With Higgins sidelined for the season, Schultz now has a chance to be C.J. Kayshon Boutte has been a member of the Houston Texans for less than two weeks but the wide receiver said he is already building a relationship with C.J. Stroud.
"We get together after practice, kind of start building that timing," Boutee said Wednesday. "Different quarterback for me, a different receiver for him. So as long as we on the same path, that's the goal at the end of the day."
Boutte and Stroud don't have months to slowly grow their on-field bond. The Texans acquired Boutte last week in a trade with the New England Patriots for safety Jaylen Reed and a seven-round pick in 2028.

The Houston Texans traded for Kayshon Boutte this week with hopes that he will be a solid No. 2 receiver for them behind Nico Collins. That's why it was a little shocking to hear Mike Vrabel say Thursday night that if the New England Patriots hadn't dealt Boutte, he likely wouldn't have seen the field for them because of their improved depth at the position.
Boutte's 33 receptions last season was fifth on the Patriots squad, although two of the players ahead of him were tight end Hunter Henry and running back TreVeyon Henderson. His 551 yards was third on the team and his six touchdown catches was second. Still, in the offseason, the Patriots traded for three-time Pro Bowl receiver A.J. Brown and signed former Packers receiver A.J. Doubs as a free agent. Those two are going to be New England's top options at receiver with DeMario Douglas also expected to get plenty of time. The backups are Mack Hollins and Kyle Williams, who both play special teams, something Boutte hasn't done since he entered the league in 2023.
"It was one place where we do have some depth," Vrabel told reporters after the Patriots' final preseason game Thursday night. "I think for all parties involved, that was probably the best thing. Had Kayshon Boutte not been traded to the Houston Texans earlier this week, it was unlikely the receiver would have been active for the first game of the regular season.
At least, that's what Mike Vrabel alluded to when speaking with reporters after Thursday's 37-13 preseason loss to the Cleveland Browns, which marked the first time he held a press conference since the trade was announced.
Despite his comments about the team lacking depth, he made sure to highlight that receiver was not a position he included in that group.

Boutte thanked the Patriots and those who meant most to him within the franchise's ranks in a post on social media.

Boutte was selected by the Patriots with the No. 187 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. After spending all three seasons of his career in New England from 2023-25 and reaching the Super Bowl with the team at the end of last season, the 24-year-old had his offseason trade request honored by the Patriots on Monday, as he now joins the Texans with just under three weeks remaining until the start of the 2026 NFL season.

Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf had a different view when asked about the deal at a Tuesday press conference. Wolf acknowledged that the team feels "really good about our receiver group," but focused on the opportunity to acquire safety Jaylen Reed after liking what they saw from him heading into the 2025 draft.
"Jaylen was a guy that we identified in the draft process as someone that we might pick, and he ended up going before we could take him," Wolf said, via a transcript from the team. "We followed his career last year with Houston and thought it was pretty remarkable that, as a rookie who hadn't played much during the regular season, they trusted him enough to play the majority of the playoff games. We just continued to follow him, and when we determined that he might be available, he was someone that we wanted to acquire."
Wolf said that there is "no concern" about trading Boutte to a team that they could be competing with for a playoff spot in the AFC and a full accounting of the trade will likely wait until we find out how the two teams wind up stacking up come the end of the season.

Right now, there seems to be a clear option on the table and certainly a player looking for a bigger role.

Some seem to believe that he has late-round value, though, given how young he is and the production being at the level it's been in the past two seasons, it might not be crazy to suggest that he should get more than a recent trade proposal suggested.

According to Sports Illustrated's Mike Kadlick, Boutte stated after a training camp practice this week that he has been forging chemistry with Maye on looks down the field.

"We all we got, we all we need," Diggs said in a huddle before the Patriots' Week 5 upset win over the Buffalo Bills last year.
That phrase carried the Patriots through the season, the playoffs and ultimately to the Super Bowl. Fans had hoped Diggs would return if the team decided to move on from Kayshon Boutte. But instead, it will go down in the history books as a one-and-done run for the ages.

There was a significantly more laid-back approach to Wednesday's training camp practice for the New England Patriots. After two consecutive practices in pads, the Patriots used the 10th practice, which was closed to the public, as a walkthrough session.
There wasn't a competitive team period, and the team used the time to sharpen other fundamental work on the football field. That doesn't mean there weren't keen observations to be taken away from the practice session.
However, instead of focusing on who stood out during competition reps, we are going to focus on the players who appear to be moving up the depth chart given their position at Wednesday's practice.
Here are the four standout players from Day 10 of Patriots training camp:
The Patriots have a tough decision looming at wide receiver, ***** uming Kayshon Boutte sticks around for another season. Will they keep six receivers on the roster like last season, or will they keep seven receivers for the 2026 season? If they go with six, the competition is expected to come down between Efton Chism III and 2025 third-round draft pick Kyle Williams.

After one day without an audience, the New England Patriots returned to the fields behind Gillette Stadium on Tuesday for their ninth practice of training camp. The fans were treated to an entertaining session.

The deep passing game: Kayshon Boutte, A.J. Brown and Mack Hollins, the biggest top-level receivers on New England's roster, made several big plays on Tuesday. Their stat lines show how involved they were: Boutte caught a team-leading five passes in team drills, followed by Brown and Hollins hauling in four receptions each.
Boutte did most of his damage against the second-string defense, and remains the factual WR4 behind Brown, Romeo Doubs and DeMario Douglas, but it is clear just how much trust both Drake Maye and Tommy DeVito have in him. He rewarded that trust with multiple downfield receptions on Tuesday — including in both QB's two-minute drill situations.
The same was true for Hollins, whose most notable play was a deep sideline shot from DeVito for what would have been a 40-plus-yard touchdown in a true game setting. Overall, the veteran has been productive the last two days and continues to be a key target in select situations.

WR Kayshon Boutte: Boutte continues to make big plays on a daily basis. On Tuesday, his biggest moment came when he caught a deep touchdown from Drake Maye during 11-on-11s. Lining up in his typical spot as an X-receiver, the fourth-year man was able to get a step on safety Kevin Byard on a go route and showed some tremendous ball tracking and concentration skills to complete the over-the-shoulder catch for a score of 40-plus yards.
It was not Boutte's only reception on the day. He also caught a throw from Maye over the middle during 7-on-7s and added pair of catches when backup Tommy DeVito targeted him on out routes. It was an active day for a player who, through four practices, has been New England's most impactful wide receiver.
QB Drake Maye: The Patriots' quarterback started a bit slowly and his connection with A.J. Brown remains a work in progress, but he overall had a good day — an encouraging development after struggling with accuracy during the last full-speed practice on Sunday. Maye got into a rhythm during 11-on-11s, finding Boutte on his long touchdowns and also connecting with Hunter Henry and Rhamondre Stevenson for long completions.
