Humboldt Merchant Services, an independent sales organization that focuses on payment processing for gambling and adult entertainment, agreed Tuesday to pay $12 million to settle a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit alleging it handled payments for "sham merchant accounts."
Humboldt "processed payments for more than 1,000 merchants that were shell entities that served as fronts or pass-throughs for fraudulent companies engaged in unauthorized billing scams," the Federal Trade Commission said in a Tuesday press release announcing its lawsuit and concurrent settlement agreement.
Humboldt is the business name of 5967 Ventures, a company based in Tempe, Arizona, with an affiliated office in Troy, Michigan, according to the FTC's lawsuit, which was filed Tuesday against 5967 Ventures in the U.S. District Court of Eastern Michigan. The agency filed the settlement agreement at the same time for court approval.

The collection serves as the inaugural campaign by Leon the brand's newly appointed creative director. He is the co-founder of the fashion brand Opening Ceremony and former co-creative director of Kenzo.
"St. John is a brand that exemplifies American luxury, and its unique perspective shaped the way I looked at fashion. I was always drawn to the mother-daughter bond at its core, and its iconic marketing which paired Marie Gray's dedication to knitwear with her daughter Kelly's edge. HELSINKI, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Alphabet's Google will invest at least €13 billion ($15.1 billion) in artificial intelligence infrastructure in ‌Finland over the next two years, it said on ‌Wednesday, calling it the company's single largest investment in Europe.
Finland has become a magnet for data centres as companies including Microsoft and TikTok owner ByteDance seek to reduce energy costs and meet climate goals.
Its cold climate makes coping with the heat produced ‌by data centres cheaper ⁠and it also has large amounts of low-carbon electricity.
Alphabet this year increased its global investment ⁠to between $195 billion and $205 billion as it seeks to capture growing computing demand.
The investments in Finland will include data centres, electricity grid improvements and clean energy and battery projects driving services such ‌as Gemini, Search, Maps and YouTube, Google said in a statement.

OpenAI launched a product on Thursday called ChatGPT for Financial Services, a version of its enterprise tool tailored to handle tasks traditionally performed by entry-level investment bankers, including company research, financial data ***** ysis, and pitchbook creation.
According to CNBC, the product was developed alongside Morgan Stanley and Evercore as design partners, is built on top of ChatGPT Work, and is powered by GPT-6 Astra, the most capable model in OpenAI's current lineup. It is initially aimed at investment banking and equity research teams.
"We're effectively teaching ChatGPT to research like an ***** yst and back up its conclusions like an ***** yst as well," Nick Turley, OpenAI's vice president of product, told CNBC during a briefing announcing the product.
Unlike the standard ChatGPT Work offering, the financial services version connects directly to data from LSEG, Daloopa, and Pitchbook — giving the system ready access to financial statements and earnings transcripts — and can also tap into a firm's existing data subscriptions automatically, according to CNBC. The product also includes sourcing tools that link figures directly to underlying filings, chart verification functionality, and permission controls designed to safeguard confidential deal information.
In a live demo, Turley walked through the platform's capabilities as it examined a prospective M&A target, drew financial figures from industry-standard data sources, and generated a formatted PowerPoint presentation styled to a bank's existing template, according to CNBC.

Clippers President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker was suspended without pay for a year, and President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank was suspended without pay for 6 months. The team was also stripped of five future first-round picks in upcoming seasons.
It is the stiffest penalty in NBA history. However, the one individual involved who got a slap on the wrist was Leonard. After speculation that he could be suspended or have his contract voided, the seven-time All-Star received a $700,000 fine. He also released a statement taking partial ownership of the fiasco.
With the punishment for cap circumvention finalized, the Clippers are expected to complete a previously agreed-upon trade sending the 35-year-old to the Raptors. Or maybe not. It is a bit odd that the two teams haven't completed a deal over a week after the penalty was handed down. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, some around the league believe there is a surprising reason the trade is still in limbo.

More than 30 years after the late royal made fashion history in the black silk Christina Stambolian dress, the head-turning gown is headed to auction at Sotheby's.
Diana wore the dress to London's Serpentine Gallery on June 29, 1994, the same night her estranged husband, then-Prince Charles, publicly admitted to having an affair with his now-wife, Queen Camilla, in a nationally televised interview. The look went from simply being a daring dress to a statement-making piece, creating one of Diana's most famous fashion moments.
But as Sotheby's notes in its September 10 press release, the dress had been sitting in Diana's wardrobe for nearly three years before that unforgettable night. Commissioned in 1991 after Diana asked Stambolian for "something very special," the off-the-shoulder black silk design was a striking departure from the traditional royal wardrobe.
