Commodity producing and trading giant Glencore expects to post a profit of $3.3 billion in its marketing division for the first half of the year, as extreme market volatility during the Iran war generated windfall earnings for the energy commodity traders.
Glencore expects to report next week a strong half-year marketing adjusted earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) of about $3.3 billion in its Marketing segment, which includes oil trading, the company said on Wednesday in its half-year production report.
The trading giant didn't specify how much energy trading contributed to the profit, but it's expected to do so in the detailed half-year earnings due out next week.
At any rate, the market volatility of the past five months is putting Glencore's trading profit on track for its best year ever if energy markets continue to whipsaw in the coming months.
Glencore book its highest ever full-year EBIT in marketing for 2022, the year in which the Russian invasion of Ukraine upended energy flows and markets and sent oil prices soaring to $120 per barrel.

1010 ET – Fewer apartments are sitting empty, rents are climbing, and yet the deals keep coming, Zillow says. The typical U.S. asking rent rose to $1,965, up 2.2% compared to a year ago, and nearly 2 in 5 rental listings came with a concession attached. A concession is a move-in discount, commonly a free month’s rent, waived fees or free parking. For renters who land a freebie, the real cost of renting can be softer than the asking price suggests. The 2.2% annual rent growth in June is a slight acceleration from the previous month. Yet the increase in concessions-39.7% of rental listings on Zillow offered one in June, up from 35.2% a year ago—softens the blow for renters. The backdrop is a rental market that has added significant new inventory over the past few years, giving renters more choices.(chris.wackwsj.com)

U.S.-listed shares of SK Hynix (NASDAQ:SKHY) climbed 6.6% in premarket trading on Thursday after fresh capital spending plans from Alphabet and Tesla strengthened expectations for continued investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The gains reflected growing investor confidence that demand for advanced memory chips will remain strong as leading technology companies accelerate AI development.
Market sentiment improved after Alphabet raised its projected 2026 capital expenditure to between $195 billion and $205 billion, signalling continued heavy investment in data centres and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Tesla also reaffirmed its commitment to substantial AI-related spending, reinforcing expectations that demand for high-performance semiconductors will continue expanding across the technology sector.
The announcements boosted optimism for suppliers involved in the AI supply chain, particularly companies producing advanced memory solutions.

Santos narrowed its full-year production guidance after its Barossa LNG project and Alaska's Pikka oil development advanced through commissioning, with the company expecting a significant increase in production and free cash flow during the second half of 2026.
The Australian energy producer said Barossa is now operating at 97% of planned production rates, with LNG cargoes currently being loaded about every eight days. Meanwhile, Pikka's initial production wells are delivering approximately 23,000 barrels per day, with plateau output of around 80,000 bpd (gross) targeted in the third quarter and first sales expected in August.
Second-quarter production rose 3% from the previous quarter to 23.1 million barrels of oil equivalent (mmboe), bringing first-half output to 45.6 mmboe. Santos now expects second-half production to be approximately 20% to 30% higher than the first half and narrowed its full-year production guidance to 99-105 mmboe.
Second-quarter sales revenue increased 6% quarter-on-quarter to $1.35 billion. First-half free cash flow from operations reached about $378 million but was weighed down by one-off commissioning costs at Barossa and Pikka, the timing of LNG cargo receipts, and temporary under-lift positions in Papua New Guinea. The company said these factors are expected to reverse during the second half, supporting stronger cash generation.
Santos also expects higher LNG prices to boost earnings after realizing $11.21 per mmBtu during the quarter. Because most of its LNG contracts are linked to the ******* an Crude ******* tail (JCC) benchmark with a three-month pricing lag, the rise in JCC prices above $100 per barrel during the second quarter is expected to lift realized LNG prices in the third quarter.

SEOUL, July 20 (Reuters) - Lee Seung-ho watched the nearly 300 million won ($202,515) stock trading fortune he built with a 500% margin loan evaporate in just four weeks in May, but he plans to borrow again and return to the market the moment he has ‌enough capital.
The 24-year-old South Korean university student in Seoul briefly turned the 20 million won he saved during mandatory military service into a 15-fold ‌windfall, all by tapping a "tiny circle ***** on" on his trading app that instantly unlocked five-times leverage.
Then the market turned.
Violent swings in South Korean stocks triggered a cascade of forced liquidations by his brokerage, wiping out the gains. Within weeks, his account had fallen below his initial investment, leaving him under such strain that he said: "I literally could not breathe."
"But I'm sticking to margin loans," Lee said from his studio apartment, barely larger than a parking ***** e, next to an empty Hibiki whisky and an unboxed electric fan gifted by his brokerage after he qualified as a VIP client.

Americans get one 6-month guaranteed-issue window for Medigap at 65, after which insurers in 46 states can deny coverage based on health history permanently.
The window opens at Part B enrollment, not the 65th birthday, so delaying Part B for employer coverage directly delays and can complicate Medigap access.
Only New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maine require year-round guaranteed issue, and those protections don't transfer if policyholders move states.
Are you ahead, or behind on retirement? SmartAsset's free tool can match you with a financial advisor in minutes to help you answer that today. Each advisor has been carefully vetted, and must act in your best interests. Don't waste another minute; learn more here.
Federal law hands every American a single, non-repeating window to buy Medicare supplemental insurance on favorable terms. It opens the month a person turns 65 and enrolls in Medicare Part B, lasts exactly six months, and never comes back. Inside that window, insurers must sell any Medigap policy they offer at their best available rate, regardless of health history. Outside it, in most states, they can pull medical records, charge more, exclude conditions, or refuse to sell entirely.

Madison Small Cap Fund, managed by Madison Funds, released its Q2 2026 investor letter. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The small-cap market showed exceptional strength in Q2, largely due to anticipated peace in the Middle East. The Russell 2000 Index began to rally, propelled by Information Technology, Health Care, and Industrials. The Madison Small Cap Fund (Class I) returned 12.7% in the quarter, underperforming the Russell 2000's 21.5% and Russell 2500's 20.2%. While strong gains were seen in Info Tech investments, recent investments in underperforming software companies negatively impacted overall performance. Nevertheless, confidence in the long-term potential of these software investments remains high. The firm is optimistic about small caps, noting their recent outperformance over large caps, recovery in certain software sectors, and improvements in some housing stocks toward the end of the second quarter. Please review the Fund's top five holdings to gain insights into their key selections for 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Madison Small Cap Fund highlighted Shake Shack Inc. (NYSE:SHAK). Shake Shack Inc. (NYSE:SHAK) is a US based Shake Shack restaurants chains operator that offers burger, chicken, hot dogs, crinkle cut fries, shakes, frozen custard, beer, wine, and other products. On July 16, 2026, Shake Shack Inc. (NYSE:SHAK) closed at $59.23 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $2.53 billion. Shake Shack Inc. (NYSE:SHAK) posted a one-month return of 0.25%, while its shares lost 56.08% over the past 52 weeks.
Madison Small Cap Fund stated the following regarding Shake Shack Inc. (NYSE:SHAK) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"Our worst performing sector by far was consumer discretionary, driven mostly by extreme weakness in Shake Shack Inc. (NYSE:SHAK). Although SHAK delivered solid same store sales, outperforming many other restaurants, the market's expectations were even higher. Furthermore, management decided to accelerate new restaurant openings in the first quarter, which led to an increase in operating expenses that negatively impacted near term earnings and cash flow. Although management miscommunication on this decision was a contributing factor to the disappointment, we believe the shares are overly punished and represent very attractive value for a company that's outperform peers on the revenue line with a massive opportunity for unit growth."
Shake Shack Inc. (NYSE:SHAK) is not on our list of 40 Most Popular Stocks Among Hedge Funds Heading Into 2026. According to our database, 36 hedge fund portfolios held Shake Shack Inc. Harris Oakmark recently released its second-quarter 2026 investor letter for the "Oakmark International Small Cap Fund". A copy of the letter can be downloaded here. The fund focuses on long-term capital appreciation by investing in small-cap companies located outside the U.S. In the quarter, the fund (Investor Class) delivered a return of 4.82%, trailing the benchmark, the MSCI World ex USA Index's 7.94 % return. Information technology and industrials were the top performance contributors at the sector level, while consumer staples and materials were the largest detractors. Enthusiasm for AI continued to be the defining market theme. The firm focuses on evaluating companies based on their competitive advantages, long-term cash flow potential, and valuation, instead of prediction relative to intrinsic value. In addition, you can check the Fund's top five holdings to determine its best picks for 2026.
In its Q2 2026 investor letter, Oakmark International Small Cap Fund highlighted Birkenstock Holding plc (NYSE:BIRK). Birkenstock Holding plc (NYSE:BIRK) engages in the manufacturing and distribution of footwear products. On July 14, 2026, Birkenstock Holding plc (NYSE:BIRK) closed at $44.36 per share, reflecting a market capitalization of $8.16 billion. Birkenstock Holding plc (NYSE:BIRK) posted a one-month return of -5.52%, while its shares lost 7.08% over the past 52 weeks.
Oakmark International Small Cap Fund stated the following regarding Birkenstock Holding plc (NYSE:BIRK) in its Q2 2026 investor update:
"Birkenstock Holding plc (NYSE:BIRK) is a Germany-headquartered premium footwear company that designs, manu factures, and distributes sandals and closed-toe footwear globally, anchored by a proprietary cork and-latex footbed with documented orthopedic function. The premium footwear segment benefits from an oligopolistic structure in comfort-focused categories, where brand heritage, proprietary ma terials, and sustained supply discipline create mean ingful barriers to replication. We believe Birkenstock's fully vertically integrated manufacturing model and consistent full-price sell-through dis tinguish it from conventional footwear peers and support more durable growth and margins than the current share price implies. The stock has de-rated due to a combination of tariff exposure, dollar weakness, and market skepticism about the dura bility of recent product momentum — concerns we view as transitory or overstated — leaving shares trading at a meaningful discount to our estimate of intrinsic value."

"Equinix, Inc. (NASDAQ:EQIX) is a leading global provider of digital infrastructure, offering premium co-location and interconnection services across a global footprint of 280 data centers in 77 markets. Our investment thesis centers on its unmatched interconnection moat—more than 500,000 connections that create a powerful network effect for enterprise, cloud and network customers. The company is well positioned to capitalize on secular demand for artificial intelligence, hybrid multi-cloud architectures and vendor neutral digital infrastructure. The stock outperformed during the period after the company reported record bookings, accelerating recurring revenue growth, and AI-related workloads approaching 60% of recent large-scale deals. While the long-term growth outlook remains compelling, the elevated capital expenditures required to meet surging demand warrant continued monitoring. We maintained our position throughout the quarter."
