The moment Vernell Brown III reached the end zone; a bolt of energy returned to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
It was energy that sat dormant for four years during Billy Napier's four years as Florida football coach. Jon Sumrall relit the flame with 66 points last week vs. Florida Atlantic, but that fire fizzled out in a sluggish first quarter vs. FCS foe Campbell.
Until Brown III caught a punt early in the second quarter.
64 yards later, he landed in the end zone. Three minutes later, Brown III once again reigned in a punt and scored another touchdown.
The two scores entered Brown into an elusive category, joining Jacquez Green as the only two Gators to return two punts for TDs in a single game.

Draymond Green recently recorded an episode of his podcast, 'The Draymond Green Show,' in which he discussed several league topics, including Ben Simmons' NBA return with the Sacramento Kings.
Simmons signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Kings to make his comeback to basketball after taking a year away from the league. When he last played in the 2024-25 season, he averaged 5.6 ******* ists, 5.0 points, and 4.7 rebounds in 51 games while shooting 52.0% from the floor.
Green recognizes that while Ben Simmons is no longer the same All-Star-caliber player people saw in his prime, his arrival mainly benefits Darius Acuff Jr., the 19-year-old point guard the Kings picked seventh overall in the 2026 NBA Draft.
"Number one, I'm happy to see Ben Simmons back in the NBA. Ben Simmons is a talent that, you know, doesn't grow on trees, and we don't get the opportunity to see in the NBA every day. Ben Simmons got off to a very promising start in his career, and then a lot of people try to blame his game and not his injuries."
"It sucks that when guys get injuries, ultimately people start blaming them as a player, you know, as if you have control over the injuries that happened. And I know Ben Simmons was dealing with a back issue. And I know most people don't understand what that means, but let me tell you, as someone who dealt with a back issue, it's debilitating," Draymond Green said.

It's always fun to joke about air yards.
I do it all the time with my Rotoworld Football Show cohosts in desperately trying to make a case that a player is due for (positive or negative) regression based on his air yards accumulation from the prior week or the past few outings. And it always sounds like one long comedy bit: This player saw so many air yards that could have been converted into actual, real-life receiving yards bro, I swear bro, trust me on this.
Air yards, whether we like it or not — and most fantasy folks definitely do not like it — are a good measure of a pass catcher's opportunity and the type of passing volume in a given offense. That air yards don't always translate into real, edible receiving yards is just part of our frustrating little game. We make small bets here and there and hope things break right from week to week and prove our process correct more often than not. It's not any more complicated than that, even if we desperately want it to be.
Over the past few seasons I have used this ****** e to talk mostly about guys with exceptionally high or low touchdown rates. Air yards has mostly been a side issue in the Regression Files. That will change in 2026: I want Regression Files to be your weekly go-to for (freely available) air yards data and what it means for your various fantasy football teams.

The Erie SeaWolves have become a model of consistency in the Eastern League.
After missing the playoffs for eight straight years, the 'Wolves are headed back to the postseason for the fifth straight year.
"I'm super proud of our organization and getting guys here that want to win ballgames," said Erie manager Tony Cappuccilli. "We know winning isn't emphasized as much as player development but it's also important to learn how to win games. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- It had appeared as if Michigan football was dead to rights, about to suffer the same fate as Rutgers, going down against an overmatched foe in Week 1. After all, Western Michigan had the Wolverines' number, and controlled the game in pretty much every way.
The maize and blue needed a touchdown, and it had two Hail Mary attempts to try and get it. The first one went out the back of the end zone, but the second, with one second put on the back on the clock, controversially saw Bryce Underwood connect with wide receiver JJ Buchanan to give the Wolverines a one-point victory.
Social media went crazy in the aftermath. Here are our favorite posts on X (formerly Twitter) reacting to Michigan football's Week 1 win in improbable fashion.

Baker Mayfield faces a $50M crossroads amid uncertain Buccaneers future originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have refused to pay Baker Mayfield a big new contract extension, as they enter the 2026 NFL season with some long-term question marks at the position.
But, for at least 2026, Mayfield is the starting quarterback. He'll be the starter in 2026 and have a real chance to prove himself one more time. A lot is on the line for Mayfield in 2026.
As ESPN's Bill Barnwell highlighted, there is a $50 million-plus crossroads that Mayfield is facing this season. Depending on how he plays in 2026, Mayfield could potentially wind up playing elsewhere next year.
"There will be organizations angling for Arch Manning, Dante Moore and other options at the top of next year's draft, but if a team such as the Steelers isn't drafting high enough to land one of the top prospects, will it be willing to pay north of $50 million per season to lock in Mayfield?" Barnwell writes. "His 2026 production might determine whether that's a realistic path."

Baseball has a way of humbling you, regressing your performance to the mean wherever the mean may be and however you may be skirting it. The Baseball Gods are equally jealous and impish. In other words, the other shoe always drops. Though Randy Dobnak's peripherals and underlying stats have flashed danger throughout his Kansas City tenure, his luck ran out and his magic evaporated—on Harry Potter night at the ballpark, no less—during a 6-3 loss to the Miami Marlins.
Entering tonight, Dobnak had a 1.92 ERA but a 4.55 expected ERA. He wasn't striking guys out, and he wasn't allowing any home runs. Unfortunately, Dobnak gave up a pair of looong home runs. The first one was to third baseman Graham Pauley in the second inning, a two-run shot:

Dobnak wobbled through the next few innings before giving up another big ol blast to designated hitter Kyle Stowers, his 17th of the year.

The Naomi Osaka fashion show has touched down in New York.
The tennis superstar had another grand entrance for her tunnel walk at the US Open on Monday, Aug. 31 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. This time, her muse was Allen Iverson.
Ahead of her first-round match against Anastasia Zakharova, Osaka walked onto the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium wearing an asymmetrical light gray burnout hoodie and a while tulle skirt. She wore her hair in braids like Iverson's signature style with an athletic headband and also had a black athletic sleeve on one arm and a red one on the other. The look was made by Who Decides War and overseen by celebrity image architect Law Roach, who is also Zendaya's stylist.
After the match started, Osaka's social media team shared an Instagram gallery of a grunge photo shoot where the two-time U.S. Open champion is modeling the look in front of a bridge. Close-up photos reveal newspaper clippings woven into the hoodie. The caption says simply, "The Answer."
Before the match, Osaka told the media about how she is inspired by the NBA and its fashion icon. Iverson drew criticism during his playing days for wearing oversized clothes and showcasing his tattoos. The league created a dress code in 2005 after he was gaining popularity.

In return for Green, the Timberwolves received Cody Williams and John Konchar, whose contract has since been waived and stretched. Self-proclaimed diehard Cincinnati Reds fan Kirk Herbstreit, who grew up in Centerville, Ohio, appeared Aug. 27 on ESPN's "Pat McAfee Show" to discuss a number of topics, including his dissatisfaction with the 2026 Reds.
"My whole life I grew up watching and listening to every Reds baseball game," Herbstreit explained during the broadcast. "I am a diehard Reds baseball fan. And after 13 years of underachieving, I am always a fan. But I am so beyond ****** off with the lack of competitive fire from the organization. They've beaten it out of me."
"Look at the stands," Herbstreit continued. "I'm not the only one. Look at all the (empty) red seats at the home games. It is what it is. … When I was growing up, Reds' baseball was as proud as any professional organization there was in all of sports, not just baseball. They don't have that now. Hopefully they'll get it back one day. I'm still a fan. I just get disgusted with them."
Herbstreit made similar remarks on McAfee's show in July, going into painstaking detail about how challenging it is for him to root for the Reds.

Aside from Liverpool's attack, their defensive midfielders are one of their biggest problems.
Andoni Iraola tried playing Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai in a double pivot against Newcastle on Sunday and, during every single one of the Reds' forward charges, they were left open to counter-attacks.
This is exactly how the Magpies' first goal came about and, there were also many other moments during the clash when Matthias Jaissle's men could've got another one or two goals from their counter attacks.
However, fortunately for the Reds, that didn't happen and they ended up drawing 2-2 with them.
But, again, this was only because of a 99th-minute penalty from Szoboszlai.

Manchester City are set to make an opening offer for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
The Argentina international has been identified by manager Enzo Maresca as a player who can bring quality to his midfield after a series of high-profile exits.
Chelsea are aware of City's interest and set an unofficial deadline for the deal to be completed earlier this summer at a minimum fee of £120m.
Nevertheless, City are expected to return with another attempt to sign the 25-year-old before next week's transfer deadline.
Fernandez could become one of the most expensive signings in Premier League history, behind only Liverpool's £125m move for Alexander Isak last summer.

Lakers expected to not waive $48M defensive menace over Bronny James, Dalton Knecht, Jaden Hardy originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Lakers find themselves in an interesting position, as they are currently one roster spot over the league's limit. They do have some time to make a cut or complete a trade to create the necessary ***** e.

For nearly two decades, The Smoking Musket has been a home for Mountaineer fans to celebrate the wins, agonize over the losses, debate the coaching hires, and share in all the chaos that comes with being a WVU fan. Now, just in time for an undefeated, "Return the Glory," "They Know What's Coming and Still Can't Stop It" football season, I'm excited and honored to take on the role of site manager and help shape where The Smoking Musket goes from here.
Taking over a site and community with this much history and love from Mountaineer fans is not something that I take lightly. I fully realize that I have D'or Fischer-sized shoes to fill and if I'm being honest, I would have never wanted to take on this role without the countless hours of entertainment that the previous stewards of this community gave me. The bottom line is that The Smoking Musket made being a WVU fan more fun for me, and I hope to carry on this tradition.
But I'm not doing it alone.
I'm also incredibly excited to introduce 2 new staff writers who will be joining us in this new era. Here is little bit of each of our backstories so you can get to know us:
Al Rawls- Staff Writer- I didn't grow up bleeding old gold and blue. I found this program the way a lot of people find the things that end up mattering most, by accident, mid channel surf, unable to look away. What kept me is what keeps most of us: that team has never played it safe a day in its life. Read option before it had a name, a coach who'd rather win ugly than lose pretty, quarterbacks who run like the play design is a suggestion. I'm based in Atlanta, which is where I get to write about the program from now.

BZZR has reached another streaming agreement, this time with the Los Angeles Rams, as the upstart free streamer eyes further expansion.
The Los Angeles Rams announced an agreement with BZZR to make the service its local preseason streaming home. According to Sportico, all three preseason games will stream free to fans in California, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah, as well as in Australia and Mexico. Rams preseason games will also continue to air on local television.
The agreement is a first for an NFL team with a streamer, as teams were only allowed to stream preseason games directly to fans this season. BZZR believes that gives it a leg up in the free sports streaming ***** e.
BZZR was launched without much fanfare in April 2026. But it really burst onto the scene in July, when the Texas Rangers moved their direct-to-consumer streaming platform to BZZR after financial issues at the prior home: Victory+.
The launch drew criticism from some fans because BZZR initially lacked apps for Roku, Samsung, and LG smart TVs. An app on Roku has since been launched.

Browns could make franchise-altering Shedeur Sanders decision after 2026 season originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Cleveland Browns have spent years searching for a long-term answer at quarterback. The 2026 season could determine whether Shedeur Sanders receives that opportunity or becomes another name in the franchise's lengthy history of failed experiments.
Cleveland enters the season with Sanders competing against Deshaun Watson, whose fully guaranteed $230 million contract finally expires after 2026. Watson has appeared in only 19 games since Cleveland acquired him from the Houston Texans in 2022. He has thrown 19 touchdown passes, and the Browns have gone 9-10 in his starts.
Sanders received his first extended NFL opportunity late last season. The former fifth-round pick started Cleveland's final seven games, posting a 3-4 record with seven touchdown passes, 10 interceptions and an 18.9 QBR. Those numbers did not establish Sanders as the Browns' future, but his offseason improvement kept him in the competition.

Washington DC has hosted presidential inaugurations, World Series parades and Fourth of July celebrations. Now, IndyCar is coming to the streets of the nation's capital.
The inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix will bring open-wheel racing to a temporary 1.66-mile street race winding through downtown D.C. The seven-turn course will guide drivers past some of the city's most iconic landmarks, including the U.S. Capitol, Washington Monument and several Smithsonian museums.
The race weekend, scheduled for Aug. 22-23, will feature practice, qualifying and the main race, giving fans a chance to see IndyCar drivers navigate a course unlike any other on the series calendar.
The race has already made its presence felt across downtown DC, with road closures and construction weeks underway as crews transform city streets into a temporary racing circuit. Barriers, fencing and other track infrastructure have been installed along the route ahead of race weekend.
For drivers, the circuit will offer little room for error, with tight turns and narrow sections replacing the traffic that normally moves through these streets. For residents and visitors, the race has meant detours and closures across parts of downtown as the District prepares to host its first IndyCar event.

The Baltimore Ravens earned a 24-7 win in their 2026 preseason opener, securing a wire-to-wire victory in Jesse Minter's head coaching debut.
Here is the Baltimore Beatdown staff's reaction to the win:
A very encouraging start to Jesse Minter's debut season. The offense looked smooth and got the young skill guys active early while the defense completely shut down the Eagles offense. Ja'Kobi Lane, Elijah Sarratt, and Matthew Hibner showed flashes of their potential roles in Declan Doyle's offense. A few UDFA's made strong impressions, with Joe ***** nano being the standout. Looking forward to seeing more growth in the next two games. — Mark Myers
While you can never glean much from any preseason game, there was a lot to like for the Ravens against the Eagles. Multiple young players impressed, including rookies Vega Ioane, Ja'Kobi Lane, Elijah Sarratt, Mathew Hibner, and Joe ***** nano. The defense was suffocating and nearly pitched a shutout, which makes me even more excited to see what the starting unit can do in Week 1 under Jesse Minter. The only real wart on the night for me was the missed field goal by Tyler Loop. Loop is under extreme pressure in his second season after a missed field goal ended Baltimore's playoff hopes last season, and tonight's blunder will only give more life to criticism. — Dustin *****
The Jesse Minter era got off to a great start as the Ravens secured a comfortable preseason victory, something the franchise has done plenty of times over the years. Tyler Huntley performed well in starting action at quarterback and the Ravens received promising showings from their rookie offensive class. Elijah Sarratt, Matthew Hibner and Jakobi Lane led the team in receiving, while Adam Randall rushed for 46 yards with a touchdown. On defense, cornerback Keyon Martin helped boost his stock further with a starring performance. The defense as a whole was dominant, not allowing a score until late in the fourth quarter with the game out of reach. Here's hoping this sets the stage for more stalwart defensive outings for the 2026 season. — Frank Platko

Liverpool have got certain questions to answer over their midfield options.
Three players - Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic are out of contract in 2027. Unless new deals are quickly wrapped up then Richard Hughes will face losing another three performers for nothing next summer.
Jones is closing in on a deal to join Inter Milan while teams in the Bundesliga and around the Premier League are thought to want Elliott.
Bajcetic is sought for a deal in his native Spain - with the Spaniard needing first-team football following his recovery from injury.
Other youngsters could also end up leaving Anfield this summer - albeit on loan.

BEREA ― The Browns got another day closer to playing against someone else besides each other. Their Aug. 11 training camp practice marked the 12th such practice, and left them just three days away from their first preseason opener in Chicago.
Day 12 of camp was one of the longer fully-padded practices, stretching over two hours and 15 minutes. It also marked the day the Browns put out their first "unofficial" depth chart ahead of the Aug. 15 preseason opener at the Bears.
There were few, if any, surprises with either the practice or the depth chart. Which is about par for the course for where the Browns are through a dozen practices and just three days out from the first preseason game.

As is custom, it's time for the big takeaways from the day. Starting, as is also custom, with the quarterbacks.
