Candace Parker didn't pick up a basketball with aspirations of on day joining the hall of fame.
The Lady Vols legend's career started at a park near her home in Naperville, Illinois, where she spent hours playing with her two older brothers, who were her heroes.
Parker fell in love with the game, which took her all over the world. But when she looks back on her career, the places that stick out in her mind aren't the flashy arenas or the championship parades routes. It's that park or the fitness center in Naperville where she first dunked, and Stokely Athletic Center, where she got in extra work before Tennessee's new practice facility was opened her senior year.
Parker may not have dreamed of being a first-ballot hall of famer, but she looked up in the rafters every day with the Lady Vols, determined to hang more banners and the rest would take care of itself.
It arrived for Parker with her second hall of fame induction in less than three months. Parker was enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Aug. 15 at Symphony Hall in in Springfield, Massachusetts. She was inducted to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in June, entering both in her first year of eligibility.

Edson Barboza didn't get the sendoff he wanted but he battled to the very end as the legendary Brazilian announced his retirement on Saturday after falling to Esteban Ribovics in the opening bout on the main card at UFC 330.
The fight ended after Ribovics just unloaded a barrage of strikes that trapped Barboza against the cage and before any more punishment was dished out, the referee stopped the fight with the end coming at 1:32 in the second round.
Afterwards, Ribovics paid homage to Barboza as one of his heroes in the sport.
"He's my idol when I started training," Ribovics said about Barboza. "He had an amazing and big career. It's an honor for me to fight with me. It's bitter … when you fight in this sport, you know one day it's going to happen.
"I want to fight with everybody close to the top 15. I know my last fight was not my best fight but I want another chance."

When the Tennessee **** ans took the practice field on Aug. 15 just a shade before 2:30 p.m., the AccuWeather "RealFeel" was 110 degrees and the heat index was a much-milder 104 in Nashville. So let's start off **** ans observations by highlighting the real heroes of the day: the hydration squad.
By The Tennessean's count, the **** ans had at least a dozen water runners on the field at all times. After practice, one of the staffers estimated for The Tennessean that they went through the equivalent of 20-30 bags of ice to make everything work. This is part of an **** embly-line process wherein the water runners bring caddies of four-to-six squeeze-top water bottles over to a golf cart with three multi-gallon coolers filled with ice water and a big green ladle. Some of the squeeze bottles are marked off with tape or elastic wristbands to signify they're the ones to be spiked with electrolyte powders and packets from companies like LMNT (specifically the raspberry flavor) and DripDrop. The cart is also stocked with dozens of fresh towels and mini bottles of Gatorade on ice to be used as needed.
During the 10 minutes of the opening team period alone, staffers refilled 29 water bottles.
The all-hands-on-deck mentality was evident. One staffer joking asked media in the middle of practice to hop over the ropes and help "water the players." The **** ans even took a 10-minute halftime in practice so players could go into the cold room and cool off.
"You acclimate yourself to this weather," coach Robert Saleh said. "The first couple of weeks of September you don't know what the heck you're going to get. It could be 93 degrees with 90% humidity or it could be a cool fall day in the upper Midwest. You just don't know."

When the Tennessee ******* ans took the practice field on Aug. 15 just a shade before 2:30 p.m., the AccuWeather "RealFeel" was 110 degrees and the heat index was a much-milder 104 in Nashville. So let's start off ******* ans observations by highlighting the real heroes of the day: the hydration squad.
By The Tennessean's count, the ******* ans had at least a dozen water runners on the field at all times. The Los Angeles Dodgers have had many heroes over the past two seasons as they remain kings of the baseball world, winning back-to-back World Series championships in 2024 and 2025.
However, not all their heroes were expected. They built teams that removed individual egos from the equation for the betterment of the group, and that was exactly what right-hander Brent Honeywell Jr. provided during their run to the World Series in 2024.
MORE: Dave Roberts issues warning to Andy Pages ahead of Royals game
Honeywell joined the Dodgers late in 2024 and proved to be a reliable piece out of the bullpen, pitching to a 2.62 ERA across 18 appearances in the regular season.
That earned him a spot on the postseason roster, and his role was clear. Eat up innings and save the best arms in the Dodgers bullpen for higher-leverage spots, and that is exactly what he did. After the World Series victory, many Dodgers players and fans appreciated Honeywell for sacrificing his arm and keeping everyone fresh throughout the run.

Reminding some of the once viral Techno Viking, Kasper Hogh is already earning rave reviews after recording his first goals - and first hat-trick - for Celtic.
Big-money signings come with big expectations and the Scottish champions' record-breaking summer recruit put in a statement performance in Saturday's thumping 5-1 win over Kilmarnock.
The £11m striker had his side ahead in just 64 seconds and, with little more than half an hour played, he had already earned the match ball, a firm back-post header having been followed by a precise low finish before a diving finish completed a rapid-fire treble.
Although Daizen Maeda had managed the feat in cup ties, this was the first hat-trick from a Celtic forward in the league since October 2022, when James Forrest hit three against Hibernian.
Unsurprisingly, it's already drawing comparisons between the new number nine and the heroes of the past.

When it comes to the Carolina Panthers, there are four greats who stand out above all others.
Cam Newton was the best quarterback in franchise history and their only Most Valuable Player award winner. Wide receiver Steve Smith captured the hearts of fans more than any other team legend. And the quiet giant Julius Peppers performed at a high level longer than anyone else.
All that being said, the guy who played his own position better than anyone else ever did was Luke Kuechly—arguably the best off-ball linebacker of his generation.
While his career was cut short due to head injuries, Kuechly was a one-of-a-kind competitor and performer. He was so special that he drew comps not to other all-time great defenders, but to comic book characters and superheroes.
The most common was Captain America, a decent comparison for Kuechly's class act off the field. On the field, he was more of a ferocious Wolverine, though - who had a bit of psychic ability thrown in for good measure.

This week, my young nephew is attending summer Vacation Bible School. In terms of biblical tales involving heroes, he could have gotten a similar education by flipping on the ballgame tonight and observing Noah Cameron's mound arc sinking the Minnesota Twins.
The starting pitchers—Dean Kremer in his MN debut & Cameron for the Kansas City Royals—matched zeros for the first three innings in this contest. Kremer because he had solid stuff—Cameron because he is a corporeal being in the past month who throws with his left arm.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Twins built an exceedingly odd rally when Josh Bell walked, Kody Clemens hit into what looked to be a fielder's choice until Bell deked out the KC infield by simply stopping on the way to 2B, and Royce Lewis bunted for a hit. Bases loaded…zero outs…time for the offense to break out, right?!
Somehow these batsmen made taking the lead anticlimactic: a Victor Caratini GIDP RBI followed by a Brooks Lee strikeout. 1-0 MN.

Tyrese Maxey initially hid LeBron James' signing for the 76ers from VJ Edgecombe originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Ever since LeBron James announced that he was leaving the Los Angeles Lakers, the Philadelphia 76ers were one of the contenders to sign him. They had the cap **** e, and the prospect of playing with Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid was enticing to James.
That was further amplified by the 76ers' ambitious move to trade for Jaylen Brown. It was an easy decision from there because this 76ers team could lead to them competing for a championship with LeBron. As the youngest player on the starting lineup, VJ Edgecombe grew up learning from LeBron, so he was excited even before the four-time Finals MVP picked Philly.
It is normal for a young player like Edgecombe to be excited about having James on the roster. He was born two years after LeBron was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers, so he has only known an NBA with the King in it.
As he grew up, VJ got to watch LeBron as one of his basketball heroes. Now, he has the opportunity to compete for a championship with him on the 76ers and in the same starting lineup. That is huge for any player, but VJ has earned his way to this unique opportunity.

ARCHDALE — Jerome Davis remembers visiting the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame as a teenager, marveling at the photographs and memorabilia of his larger-than-life cowboy heroes.
Fast-forward a few decades, and now it's his photo — and his inspiring life story — that wannabe cowboys will be admiring.
On July 18, the 53-year-old former world-champion bull rider was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, a remarkable accomplishment for a small-town guy who bucked rodeo history in 1995 by becoming the first PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys ******* ociation) World Championship winner from east of the Mississippi River.
"This is one of the highlights of my life," Davis said Monday. "I've had a lot of other achievements, ... but this one to me is a big deal. This is the one that, when I was a kid growing up wanting to be a cowboy, I dreamed of this happening one day. There's only so many that go to that level, and for them to consider me to be at that level, that's pretty awesome."
Tiffany Davis, Jerome's wife, accompanied him to the ceremony at the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His mother, Pam Simmons, also attended.
