Altria Group (NYSE:MO) sells cigarettes, oral nicotine pouches, and vapor products to adult tobacco users in the US. It's the parent of Marlboro, still the country's top-selling cigarette brand. The stock showed up in Donald Trump's disclosed portfolio, and it's easy to see the appeal: over 50 straight years of dividend increases and a business that doesn't move much with the economic cycle.
Altria stock is up around 25% year to date. Over the trailing 12 months, the stock is up about 24%, ahead of the market's 19% gain. Only Philip Morris, up 21% YTD, comes close among the major tobacco names. British American Tobacco and ***** an Tobacco are each up 10%.
Altria's Q1 2026 earnings beat expectations on both lines. Net revenue grew 3.2% year over year mostly from pricing, not volume. Adjusted diluted EPS grew 7.3%, up from 4.4% growth in 2025.
The volume story is also improving. Altria's smokeable segment declined just 4% in Q1 2026, down sharply from a 12% decline a year earlier. On the oral tobacco side, on! PLUS nicotine pouches rolled out nationwide in March and are now in roughly 100,000 stores, covering 85% of the nicotine pouch category by volume. On!'s own volume grew 17.6% year-over-year in Q1, after growing 11% for all of 2025. It's also the first product authorized under the FDA's streamlined pilot review program for oral nicotine pouches.

A Grade II-listed house in Windsor Great Park, Royal Lodge served as a childhood country retreat for the late Queen Elizabeth. It was a back-and-forth affair for basically the entire game before the Liberty took a double-digit lead. The Sparks valiantly tried to make a comeback but fell short, 113-109.
It was definitely a frustrating game. The Sparks shot well at just over 60 percent. They set a franchise record in ***** ists at 35. They made 16 three-pointers. Six players scored in double figures. And they still came up short.
"I think we played well," Sparks coach Lynne Roberts said. "We had 30 points off of 18 turnovers, right? We were active, we were connected. Good offense beats good defense. There were some mistakes, obviously. We're not going to play perfect, neither did they. We made more field goals than them. We lost at the free throw line. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch said in a recent interview that the U.S. was not founded on "one race or one religion," pushing back on arguments made by conservatives such as Vice President Vance.
"We were founded, a lot of our colonies, for our religious pluralism, right? And the opportunity to practice your own faith in your own way," Gorsuch told PBS host Margaret Hoover in an episode of "Firing Line" published Friday.
"And we were never supposed to be a nation that was about one race or one religion, it was about those ideas," he added, referring to America's founding principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. "And those things are perfect ideas that speak to every human heart and that unite us all."
Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, touted his view in December that Christianity provided the prevailing ideals for the founding and continuation of the country.
"I'm not saying you have to be a Christian to be an American. I'm saying something simpler and truer: Christianity is America's creed, the shared moral language from the Revolution to the Civil War and beyond," the vice president said at Turning Point USA's annual "AmericaFest" event.

There is not long to go until the 2026-27 season gets underway for Real Madrid, who have Jose Mourinho back at the helm for the first time in over 13 years. The Portuguese has been tasked with ending Los Blancos' run without a major trophy, which dates back to the end of the 2024-25 campaign when they won their 15th Champions League.
There is a lot of hope that Mourinho is the ideal man to get Real Madrid back on track. A lot of current and former players have expressed their support in recent weeks, with the latest being Borja Mayoral during an interview with Marca (via MD). He recounted his memories of the Portuguese, starting with the positives.
"What I liked the most, above all, was training. They were very competitive and a lot of fun. Although my situation was not ideal, I really enjoyed training with him. Over time I was even surprised. From the conversations we had and some things he said to me before certain games, I felt that he valued my work. I remember that on one occasion he told me that I deserved to have played much earlier and he also spoke very highly of me in a press conference. That sticks with me. He was a close person. With Gonzalo Villar, Carles Pérez and the Spaniards he talked a lot about his time at Real Madrid. As I have always been very curious, I took the opportunity to ask him many things about his time at Madrid."
However, there were also negatives that Mayoral remembers, such as Mourinho's inability to take defeat well.
"Maybe he didn't really know how to lose, he made comments within the dressing room that I didn't like. Not only towards me, but also towards other colleagues. I understand that he is a very competitive person and that in the heat we can all say things, but I believe that respect for people should always be above all else."

That's why the research compares the experiences of current retirees with the expectations of savers, while highlighting the important role that financial advisors can play in helping their clients cut through the noise.

The Athletics opened this weeklong road trip by losing two out of three to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Following an off day yesterday, the A's are back in action today as they begin a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins, who at 51-53, are 4 1/2 games back of the American League Central lead and 2 1/2 games behind the third and final AL Wild Card spot.

Right-handed reliever Yunior Tur's MLB debut did not go well, as he allowed 14 runs in his first 2 2/3 innings. Hopefully Tur can work on what wrong at Triple-A, so he comes back to the majors more prepared to succeed.
The player replacing him, right-hander Luis Morales, has been one of the team's biggest disappointments this season, struggling both in the big leagues and the minor leagues. With the A's out of contention, getting Morales, a former top prospect, back on track would be a big boost for the pitching staff moving forward.
Left-hander Jacob Lopez will make the start for the A's to kick off the series in the Twin Cities. The 28-year-old enters his 16th appearance and 13th start of the season with a 4-4 record, a 6.64 ERA, a 1.73 WHIP and 49 strikeouts over 59 2/3 innings.

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — King Charles III took his time before officially opening the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after emerging Thursday from the TARDIS of intergalactic adventurer "Doctor Who."
More than 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories will compete across 10 sports and six Para sports in the 11-day event. Charles formally opened the Games in his role as head of the Commonwealth.
The opening ceremony show began with a clip of what organizers called "the world's most famous police box" from the iconic sci-fi TV series going on a journey around Scotland. After visits to Loch Ness, the Kelpies, and Edinburgh Castle, it stopped to pick up Charles and Queen Camilla at Balmoral Castle.

Following the 2025 season, 31 players departed from the Oregon Ducks roster via the transfer portal, seeking more opportunity elsewhere. Reserve quarterback Austin Novosad was one of the more prominent names to do so.
Rated as a four-star and the No. 13 quarterback in the 2023 class, Oregon managed to flip Novosad from Baylor after five-star Dante Moore spurned the Ducks and himself flipped to UCLA. A top 200 prospect, the flip was considered a significant win for Oregon especially how quickly it came after losing Moore.
But the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Novosad never could quite carve out a role with the Ducks. He saw his most action in 2023 as a freshman, completing 9-of-11 passes for 52 yards in garbage time. That ended up being the peak, as he was the third-string quarterback in 2024 and once again in 2025.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham doubled down Wednesday on comments she made in a recently published ESPN article, saying it’s “common sense” to bar transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.
In the ESPN article, Cunningham said she wanted to “protect young girls in the locker room” and that “they shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” Cunningham said before Wednesday’s home game against the Connecticut Sun. “And I think I’ll always believe in that. I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.”
The participation of transgender athletes in sports has become an increasingly politicized issue, with the Supreme Court recently upholding individual state bans on trans athletes competing in sports alongside cisgender athletes. The ruling came roughly a year after President Donald Trump issued an executive order attempting to block trans athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports.
Cunningham added that she’s “not a very political person,” but her morals compelled her to speak out. She also stated that her stance on trans athletes is not indicative of which side of the political aisle she falls on.

NEW YORK, July 22 (Reuters) - Many patients have opted for injectable forms of the wildly popular GLP-1 obesity medications through a pilot program of the U.S. government's Medicare health insurance program for Americans aged 65 and older, according to early indications from doctors and analysts.
The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services this month launched an 18-month trial program that for the first time opens access to Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Eli Lilly's Foundayo and Zepbound as weight-loss treatment alone for a monthly cost of $50.
Millions of people are expected to qualify, and doctors are already being flooded with interest from patients aged 65 and older. For the most part, they say the process is going well — with some hiccups.

While the final decision is not yet set in stone, it is presumed that Aaron Philo — who arrived in Gainesville through the transfer portal to join his previous offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, Buster Faulkner — will be lining up under center to start the season. The redshirt sophomore has the upper hand on redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr., who served as the primary backup last year, and true freshman Will Griffin heading to the opener of the 2026 campaign.
With that in mind, The Athletic's college football writers Antonio Morales and Sam Khan Jr. recently ranked every projected starter at the position from 1 to 138, organizing them all into seven distinct tiers. Philo finds himself ranked No. 55, which puts him in Tier 4 — right in the middle of the pack.
"Philo saw limited snaps (63 in 2025) while backing up Haynes King at Georgia Tech, so there's still much to learn. He has been effective in his limited duty, accounting for 29 explosive plays in his 180 career snaps (a 3.4% explosive play rate would be top 30 nationally if sustained over starter snaps)," they said.

Michigan basketball managed to hold onto most of its roster, but not everyone chose to stay in Ann Arbor under new head coach Mike Boynton Jr.
The Wolverines lost one player to the transfer portal in backup point guard LJ Cason, who had torn his ACL in the Illinois game this past season. Expected to be out for the majority, if not all, of the upcoming season, Cason was going to redshirt for the maize and blue before the NCAA's five-for-five ruling came down. But when Dusty May left Michigan for the NBA, Cason was the last player to decide if he was staying or going, and ultimately chose to leave.
Cason entered the transfer portal, and on Tuesday, he ultimately opted to go to Miami, as reported by Rivals' Joe Tipton.
Cason is the second player in as many years to leave Ann Arbor for Coral Gables. Starting point guard in May's first season coaching the maize and blue, Tre Donaldson, also transferred to the Hurricanes.
A huge spark off the bench, Cason was expected to be the starting point guard of the future for the Wolverines. He improved from scoring 4.3 points per game as a true freshman to 8.4 points per game in his sophomore year. He has three years of eligibility remaining now that five-for-five is enacted.

Expected to be out for the majority, if not all, of the upcoming season, Cason was going to redshirt for the maize and blue before the NCAA's five-for-five ruling came down. But when Dusty May left Michigan for the NBA, Cason was the last player to decide if he was staying or going, and ultimately chose to leave.
Cason entered the transfer portal, and on Tuesday, he ultimately opted to go to Miami, as reported by Rivals' Joe Tipton.
Cason is the second player in as many years to leave Ann Arbor for Coral Gables. Starting point guard in May's first season coaching the maize and blue, Tre Donaldson, also transferred to the Hurricanes.
A huge spark off the bench, Cason was expected to be the starting point guard of the future for the Wolverines. He improved from scoring 4.3 points per game as a true freshman to 8.4 points per game in his sophomore year. He has three years of eligibility remaining now that five-for-five is enacted.

July 20 (Reuters) - Nicaragua's long-serving president Daniel Ortega said the Central American country will no longer hold elections, eliminating the possibility of an electoral challenge when his term ends next year and further entrenching the rule he shares with his wife.
Ortega, who has continuously held power since 2007 following an earlier presidential term in the 1980s, said the move will close off any path to the opposition, although he did not provide details about carrying out the ban.
"There won't be any more elections here for them to try to seize the government and seize power," Ortega said in a speech on Sunday evening to commemorate the 1979 Sandinista revolution, in which Ortega helped overthrow the U.S.-backed Anastasio Somoza dictatorship.
"The days when parties backed by the Yankees (United States) and the Somocistas would return to power are over - never again," he added, in the 80-year-old's first public appearance in two months.
The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Trump administration has described the Ortega government as a dictatorship, and imposed sanctions on more than 2,350 Nicaraguan officials and their relatives.

The Supreme Court agreed Monday to hear an appeal from an Alaskan bush pilot whose plane was seized by authorities after they discovered it was bound for a remote, dry village with beer on board.
The appeal from the 82-year-old pilot, Kenneth Jouppi, could have national implications if the 6-3 conservative court limits the ability of state and local governments to rely on ******* et forfeiture. Jouppi claims that the taking of his $95,000 Cessna for what amounted to a six-pack of beer violated the 8th Amendment's bar on excessive fines.
The Supreme Court is likely to hear oral arguments in the case later this year or early next — and hand down a decision by next summer.
"The Excessive Fines Clause of the Constitution was built for cases like this," said Sam Gedge, a senior attorney at the Institute for Justice, which is representing the pilot. "As government agencies increasingly exploit fines and forfeitures to pad their budgets, it's vital that the Supreme Court make clear that the Excessive Fines Clause is a meaningful check on government overreach."
Jouppi says that the Budweiser and Bud Light found on his plane, which was packaged with other groceries, belonged to a passenger. He said that most of it was out of sight, but state police said one six-pack was in plain view inside a grocery bag.
