(NEXSTAR) – The days getting shorter serve as a reminder that we’re barreling toward the end of our seasonal observation of daylight saving time, but the wheels may be in motion to stop that – a move more than a dozen states have been waiting to happen.
Earlier this year, the House passed the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight saving time permanent throughout the U.S., with few exceptions. It’s been held up in the Senate since July but, now that the chamber has returned from recess, there’s a chance the legislation could be picked up.
If it can pass the Senate, the bill seems to stand a fair chance of becoming law, with President Trump already expressing support.
For more than a dozen states, this is the closest they’ve been in years to seeing some of their own legislation finally take effect. The U.S. hasn’t been this close to permanent daylight saving time since a version of the Sunshine Protection Act passed in the Senate in 2022 but fizzled in the House.
At present, states are only allowed to opt into year-round permanent standard time, as Hawaii and much of Arizona have done. But that hasn’t stopped 19 states from enacting legislation that would make daylight saving time permanent in their jurisdiction, pending approval from Congress.

Is there a disconnect between finance teams and procurement teams? A new survey of 2,005 procurement leaders in the U.S. and the U.K. suggests there is for some companies, and it may ultimately be affecting their bottom lines.
Released Tuesday, the report from California-based contract lifecycle management company Agiloft showed that about one in 10 respondents said they have no shared metrics between chief procurement officers and CFOs. The lack of shared metrics was cited among the biggest obstacles preventing companies from "closing the gap between what procurement negotiates and what finance realizes."
Other barriers cited were lack of contract data visibility, selected by 14% of respondents, along with manual processes that create exceptions that go unseen (23%).

The company's revenue rose 106% year over year to $96.2 billion. The performance was mainly driven by the data center segment, where revenue increased 117% year over year to $89 billion. The company also generated $63.7 billion in generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) operating income during the quarter. This pace of growth is particularly impressive considering Nvidia's massive size.
Nvidia is also converting a large portion of its revenues into cash. The company's free cash flow reached $69.9 billion, while the company returned roughly $46 billion to shareholders through share repurchases and dividends in the first half of its fiscal 2027. This shows that Nvidia has significant funds to invest in research and development, secure future supply, and return capital to shareholders.

Sept 1 (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department has proposed requiring parents applying for passports for their children to provide proof of their own citizenship or immigration status as part of President Donald Trump's latest effort to limit birthright citizenship.
The draft guidance, reviewed by Reuters, is the first detailed look at how the State Department could enforce Trump's August 6 executive order targeting what it calls "birth tourism" and broadening historical exceptions to birthright citizenship.
The White House referred Reuters questions to the State Department. In a statement, State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said that "President Trump has been unequivocal that this Administration will protect the meaning and value of American citizenship, full stop, and that includes making sure our passport adjudication process fully reflects that standard."
Limiting birthright citizenship has been one of the president's top priorities in his far-reaching crackdown on immigration. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled his previous attempt violated the country's Constitution.

Expion360 Inc. (NASDAQ:XPON) shares closed at $6.20 on August 24, up 80.5% following the company's oil-and-gas acquisition and financing disclosures. The transactions reposition the lithium-battery specialist as a broader energy company. The company also announced a corporate name change to Expion Energy, Inc. as part of the expansion.
Expion360 Inc. (NASDAQ:XPON) paid an adjusted $3.425 million in cash for a company holding an Eastern Louisiana exploration prospect. The acquired ****** ets include approximately 3,000 net leasehold acres, an existing wellbore, mineral-title research covering approximately 13,000 net acres, and related intellectual property. The announcement did not include current production or an estimate of proved reserves.
The company financed the move through $9 million of convertible debentures, generating approximately $8.2 million of net proceeds after fees and expenses.
Expion360 Inc. (NASDAQ:XPON) acquired a defined exploration target rather than starting its acreage and geological work from scratch. The company plans to expand the leasehold and use commercially reasonable efforts to initiate a mandatory well operation involving a lateral wellbore of at least 4,000 feet by February 15, 2027, subject to specified exceptions.

The stock market saw solid gains for the major indexes, rebounding off their 21-day moving averages, though small caps fell slightly toward their 50-day line. Lions coach Dan Campbell wouldn't reveal a full list of those he plans to have participate Saturday — "Not everybody will play," he **** ured — but he did say, "We are going to play a significant amount of starters. That's my plan right now."
Against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday, the Lions had 59 players suited up, with most of their expected starters and key contributors attending but not playing. Exceptions included the entire rookie class, wide receivers Isaac TeSlaa and Greg Dortch, offensive lineman Christian Mahogany and safety Chuck Clark, among others.
The Lions have traditionally not played their starters in the preseason since Campbell was hired in 2021. But when asked about playing starters this year, Campbell on July 29 said, "I would like to. But there again, this thing moves as we get through these practices. What do we look like? Who needs work? Do they need to play together? Are there players that aren't getting enough intensity in practice? ... We'll work around that stuff.

U.S. District Judge Lynn Winmill in Boise said in an 81-page ruling issued late on Thursday that the right to a health-preserving abortion is protected by the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees due process and equal protection under the law.
The ruling is the first by a federal judge to recognize a constitutional right to abortion in certain circumstances since the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022 overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that had legalized abortion nationwide, according to lawyers for the Idaho doctor who sued over the state laws.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is the most chaotic of all the combat sports.
Because there are so many potential avenues to victory, there are an equal number of ways to suddenly lose everything. Each weekend, at least one fighter with all the advantages on paper will instead taste defeat in violent fashion. Denying that disorder is what makes an extensive win streak or dominant ***** le reign so impressive. Controlling chaos is the name of the game, and it's why we expect our greatest of all time (GOAT) candidates to be untouchable.
Think about prime Anderson Silva, Jon Jones, or Georges St. Pierre: they didn't have close fights very often. Each of them spent about a decade thoroughly dominating their field, rarely looking hurt or tired as they outclassed the opposition. There are notable exceptions for each man, but that's why they were notable! Their true battles against the respective likes of Chael Sonnen, Alexander Gustafsson, and Johnny Hendricks were all shocking at the time, rare moments where this pantheon of greats looked like mortal humans.
Islam Makhachev, meanwhile, is one of the most accomplished UFC fighters of all time. Last night at UFC 330, he broke Silva's record for longest win streak, and he did so in the first ***** le defense of his second divisional championship. Even more impressively, he did so against a larger opponent with top-notch skills and great tactics.
He has the resume of an all-time great, which makes it exceptionally interesting that Makhachev is on the verge of losing surprisingly often.

Think about prime Anderson Silva, Jon Jones, or Georges St. Pierre: they didn't have close fights very often. Each of them spent about a decade thoroughly dominating their field, rarely looking hurt or tired as they outclassed the opposition. There are notable exceptions for each man, but that's why they were notable! Their true battles against the respective likes of Chael Sonnen, Alexander Gustafsson, and Johnny Hendricks were all shocking at the time, rare moments where this pantheon of greats looked like mortal humans.
Islam Makhachev, meanwhile, is one of the most accomplished UFC fighters of all time. Last night at UFC 330, he broke Silva's record for longest win streak, and he did so in the first ***** le defense of his second divisional championship. Even more impressively, he did so against a larger opponent with top-notch skills and great tactics.
He has the resume of an all-time great, which makes it exceptionally interesting that Makhachev is on the verge of losing surprisingly often.

Lynn Winmill made the ruling Thursday, writing that Idaho's "Defense of Life Act" and "Fetal Heartbeat Act" — which together create a near-total ban on abortion — violate the due process and equal protection clauses of the 14th Amendment. Physicians who violate the laws can lose their license and face up to five years in prison.
Both laws include narrow exceptions, including abortions done to prevent the death of a pregnant woman or in some cases of rape or incest where the pregnant person has filed a police report.
The case isn't about bodily autonomy or reproductive choice, Winmill wrote in the 81-page decision, but rather the "limit of the state's power to make a woman suffer for the sake of an unborn child."

After initially receiving a flex option, Auburn football's season opener against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Saturday, Sept. 12, now has a set start time and television network designation.

Serica Energy has said it will not increase its offer for Pharos Energy after competing bidder Ratio Petroleum Energy raised its proposal, effectively drawing a line under Serica's participation in the bidding battle at its current price.
The UK-listed oil and gas producer said Monday that its offer remains at a total value of 32.6683 pence per Pharos share, comprising 28.6683 pence in cash and a 4-pence special dividend. Serica described those financial terms as final, subject to limited exceptions under UK takeover rules.
The decision follows an increased offer announced by Ratio on August 7. Serica also noted that Ratio said it had secured irrevocable undertakings covering about 41.76% of Pharos' issued share capital.
Serica had entered the contest for Pharos on July 26 with a recommended cash acquisition at 32.6683 pence per share. That proposal surpassed an earlier Ratio transaction under which eligible shareholders stood to receive up to 28 pence per share, including Pharos' previously declared final dividend.
Serica said its decision not to raise the price reflected its disciplined approach to mergers and acquisitions. The company added that it continues to evaluate other opportunities in the UK North Sea and elsewhere.

The Minnesota Vikings took to the field again today in shells and shorts for another training camp practice at TCO Performance Center. It was hotter and sunnier than yesterday and the pace of practice was a bit slower. There was more special teams work early and another install period later in practice which also slowed things down.
So let's get into it.
This is probably the point to remind everyone that the Vikings defense allowed the second-fewest passing yards and touchdowns last year, and the passing defense ranked third overall in DVOA. I mention that now because in the competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy today, the defense won. Neither quarterback completed anything particularly impressive today. Most completions (and attempts) have been short- under ten yards- and routine throws. And with a relatively few exceptions, that's really been the case since the start of training camp.
Murray has the only successful over-the-top throws against the defense- both against the first-team defense- in Wednesday's full-pad practice. Murray had a nice deep back-shoulder pass to Jauan Jennings at the sideline today, but Jennings was unable to keep his feet in bounds- but was in position to do so- in team drills. Murray had another deep attempt to Jefferson during team drills where he might have been sacked- it was close- but the throw fell incomplete. It was a couple yards ahead of Jefferson but Murphy got flagged for either a DPI or holding call. So probably not a bad pass by Murray if he got it off in time, given the penalty on Murphy. Murray also had an intermediate pass
One other point of interest in today's practice was that Murray and Justin Jefferson, together with Kevin O'Connell, were trying to sync a back shoulder throw. The first attempt happened in a red zone drill and didn't connect, which led to O'Connell getting involved and some conversation between Murray and Jefferson after the play. The red zone drill had ended, but Murray and Jefferson tried the same play one more time and connected. But later, in team drills, Murray once again targeted Jefferson on a back shoulder throw which Jefferson got a hand on but was unable to catch. It was difficult to tell if it was Murray's pass that was a bit off or if Jefferson took an extra step in his route before coming back for the ball, but it didn't connect. Jefferson was upset that he didn't make the catch after the play, so perhaps it was on Jefferson. Anyway, that is something Murray and Jefferson are working on as part of developing a rapport during training camp.

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak is in the process of establishing a culture in his first year at the helm. That comes with a standard he wants everyone to meet — he made it clear Saturday that there are no exceptions.
"We have very clear expectations on how we want to practice and how we want to go about our business, and we violated that yesterday," Kubiak told reporters, according to ESPN's Ryan McFadden.

"We've talked to compliance. We've had some former players that we have communicated with, or they reached out, to get a sense of what it might look like," he said during a press conference on Tuesday. While the ruling is a blanket one to all athletes who began their collegiate careers in the 2022-23 season, there are a few exceptions and limitations involved with it. Of the 30 most valuable global soccer clubs, seven of them are MLS teams, led by Inter Miami, which stars Lionel Messi, arguably the greatest player in the sport's history. Sponsorship revenue in 2025 was an estimated $716 million, up 8% year over year.
But there are plenty of growth areas Berg, a former senior partner at Apollo Global Management and 26 North, wants to utilize as commissioner. The co-chair of MLS' sporting and competition committee, Berg has the full backing of league owners — who unanimously approved his appointment over the other finalist, former Fox executive David Nathanson — to enact meaningful changes to supercharge the league's growth. Garber already spearheaded a change in the league's calendar, which will switch to a fall-to-spring season starting in 2027 to align with the European leagues. That, Berg said, will greatly help the quality on the field, but so will changing the league's roster investment model so teams are able to acquire better players and build deeper rosters.
MLS currently has a $6.4 million salary cap, but various roster exceptions enable the majority of 2026 payrolls to be in the $12-21 million range. Owners have agreed that the current system is too restrictive. Berg said his No. 1 job is enhancing the roster investment model so teams can have more freedom to construct teams that work best for their markets.

The transfer market has been largely at a standstill this summer, because with the need to balance the books, Serie A clubs find they must sell before signing new players.

Fabio Paratici has wasted no time stamping his mark on this Fiorentina squad. He's brought in 5 new players already and more are coming. That's good news: the Viola needed to refresh a stale, ailing group. What I'm interested in, though, is the senior players the new sporting director has sold. No, I don't mean outcasts like Lucas Beltrán and Amir Richardson and Alessandro Bianco. I don't mean unfortunate salary casualty Robin Gosens. No, I mean all the academy-trained talent in the system.
Until the Viola create a B-team, it will lose a crop of academy kids every summer. Most of them never had a chance of breaking through to the first team. For the handful who might have the quality, finding an acceptable path within the club is difficult. The most common outcome is what happened to, say, Eduard Duțu last year: a promising young defender, he ended up on 7 loan deals before leaving Florence for good last year without ever making a senior appearance. Guys like Luca Ranieri—loans to Foggia, Ascoli, SPAL, and Salernitana before breaking through—are the exception. It's rare for to see one of these youngsters take that final step.
Young players matter to fans in a way they don't to the club itself. For fans, every 17-year-old who dribbles a 3rd-tier defender in preseason becomes a future star. That's not just luxurious thinking. We need that fantasy—the academy contains untold riches—because it reinforces two narratives that sustain us, especially through the lean years. First, we get to believe that we know ball and can identify buried talent because that allows us to think of ourselves as knowledgeable, superior, and in control of something over which we actually exert no control. Second, we get to think that Fiorentina is doing something better than other clubs, allowing us to enjoy vicarious success and prove to ourselves that there's a reason to support an organization that constantly falls short.
The other bit is that fans connect with kids they've watched grow up more than they do with senior players brought in on the open market. There are Borja Valero exceptions, of course, but in a vacuum, we'd all prefer an academy product more than a player of equal talent who transferred in. It demonstrates that the club's process is successful. It also provides a connection to the city: every time you see a kid like Tommaso Martinelli post a picture of himself as a child in the Curva Fiesole, it reinforces the depth of feeling the locals have for the club in a way that nothing else can.

The halfway point of the 2026 WNBA season is here. The All-Star Game is over and the trade deadline looms at 3 p.m. ET, Aug. 2. Teams must now decide if they're going all-in for a championship run or hitting the reset ****** on ahead of next season.
Typically, the WNBA doesn't see blockbuster deals at the trade deadline, but there have been a few exceptions. Jerod Mayo's one-year stint as New England Patriots head coach was mostly forgettable, but there are a few exceptions. One, of course, is selecting Drake Maye third overall in the draft. One of central Ohio's top high school football teams knows it will have one of the country's top recruits for at least the first five games of the 2026 season, but senior Jamier Brown's eligibility after that remains undetermined.
A five-star wide receiver who has committed to Ohio State, Brown transferred to Big Walnut in January after playing three seasons at Huber Heights Wayne.
"[Brown] is eligible for the first five games of the season, and in early October the OHSAA will conduct a review of his status in conjunction with Big Walnut and the family to determine his eligibility for Week 6 and beyond," Tim Stried, the director of media relations for the OHSAA, said July 21.
Transfers ruled ineligible for the second half of the 10-game regular season can't compete in the postseason.
During track and field in the spring, Brown was ruled eligible for the entire season after the OHSAA determined he met one of its transfer exceptions. The OHSAA said it doesn't provide details of exceptions.
