This offseason, the Heat witnessed a complete change in its roster. From superstar acquisitions through trade exchanges to top players leaving impressive salaries to join the roster, they saw a major upheaval. However, two players who were unaffected by these events were Andrew Wiggins and Simone Fontecchio.
Both players not only get to continue on the team but were also offered retention; a lifeline offered to only a handful this time. Now, with the next season approaching, the players have to meet high expectations to justify their contracts.
Earlier in the summer, Wiggins exercised the $30.1 million player option for the final year of his contract with Miami. But on June 29, the Heat decided to hand him a two-year, $34 million extension, bringing his term to a three-year, $64 million contract with them overall. He will be getting $16.5 million in 2027-28 and will have the player-option season worth $17.5 million in 2028-29. This is a huge financial security for any player, especially in a team that is aggressively looking to reinvent itself at the cost of its roster.
Wiggins was a dependable starter and brought stability last season, which he needs to continue this year. Wiggins averaged 15.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.7 ****** ists per game across 68 appearances. Maintaining his distance from defense, the 31-year-old needs to focus on being a high-efficiency 3-and-D wing, a role that saw him shine last year. He knocked down two threes a game at a career-best 41.4% clip in 2025-26.
At his rate, he could surely increase his average and show improvement. For the upcoming season, Wiggins should get perimeter shooting help from Klay Thompson, who he was teammates with in Golden State.

The Dodgers and Marlins conclude their 2026 business on Sunday afternoon at loanDepot Park in Miami.
The Dodgers haven't listed a starter, but Emmet Sheehan is in line to pitch bulk innings after his stellar Monday start at home. Justin Wrobleski was previously listed as the Sunday starter, perhaps as an opener, as the left-hander was also warming up to potentially pitch on Friday night in relief in Miami. There's also when the Dodgers decide to activate Roki Sasaki off the injured list to consider.
Right-hander Eury Pérez starts for Miami.

Four matchups with a defense carrying a bottom-3 Defensive Impact grade have somehow produced 43.5 yards per game and 1.6 yards per route for Smith. He's 17th among wide receivers in PFN's Week 1 rankings, and I read that run as goofy variance and nothing more. With A.J. Brown in New England, we could get a spike performance right out of the gates.
The Commanders have held a bottom-3 Defensive Impact grade in consecutive seasons, and guess what?
For whatever reason, they've held Smith in check in four matchups over that stretch.

Brock Purdy continues to prove doubters by exceeding his career expectations. And following the San Francisco 49ers' 2026 opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia on Thursday, he obtained another record to his collection.
Despite a slow start, Purdy had a great performance leading the offense. He completed 25 out of 34 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns and one interception.
Purdy completed the 50th game of his career, including his 46th start. His passing accuracy has been remarkable, getting 68.1% of his throws to fellow receivers. This paved the way for him to make NFL history, via Real App.
When healthy, Purdy shines as one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He was the final pick in the 2022 draft, adding more lore to his resume as a player that defied expectations and achieved remarkable success in the NFL.

Boston College will host Rutgers for their annual Red Bandana game on Friday night in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. In a tradition that honors Welles Crowther, a Boston College graduate and volunteer firefighter who died saving lives in the South Tower on 9/11.
When the Eagles played the UCF Knights on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, fans wore red bandana stickers on their helmets. Three years later Boston College created the "red bandana game." Tonight they will wear special red bandana-themed uniforms and helmets for the 13th consecutive year.

Brazil was far superior to Ecuador, but the match ended 0-0Credits: Diana Carrillo / Staff Images / CBF
Brazil's U-15 Men's National Team drew 0-0 with Ecuador in the second round of the 2026 CONMEBOL Liga Evolución, on Thursday morning (10), at Parque Guasu, in Luque, Paraguay. The result kept Brazil at the top of the North Zone group. In the other match in this group, Venezuela and Colombia drew 1-1.
Brazil was the better side, created scoring chances, gave the opposition almost no room to attack, but struggled against Ecuador's tight marking. In the first half, they had two good chances from free kicks, both saved by the opposing goalkeeper.
In the second half, the Canarinho improved and pinned Ecuador back in its own half, creating a string of chances. In the 37th minute, Isaac won a penalty as he broke free into the box. Kelwin took the spot kick, but it was saved by Ecuador's goalkeeper, the standout player of the match.
Brazil's next match will be on Saturday (12), against Venezuela, at 8:40 a.m. (Brasília time)

Charles Barkley has often made bold NBA predictions and comparisons, but his most recent one is especially noteworthy. During an interview with Bill Simmons, the NBA legend claimed he has found a duo that could be the NBA's next Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.
"First of all, those two guards, I don't want to see them for the next 10 years if I'm a guard in the NBA," Barkley said on The Bill Simmons Podcast about the Spurs' young backcourt in Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.
"If I'm a guard in the NBA, I do not want to see them, boys, for the next 10 years. They're going to be the best. They're going to be the new Steph and Klay."

Former Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy has joined Burnley until the end of the season.
The 39-year-old, who is Leicester's record Premier League scorer with 145 goals, departed for Cremonese in 2025.
Vardy left the Italian side in the summer and now joins the winless Clarets who are bottom of the Championship.
"This club has a proper footballing history and passionate fans who deserve a team that represents them and their town," Vardy told the club website.
"I can't wait to get going on the pitch and help the team move in the right direction."

Man City moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League after squeezing past Coventry 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium, although Enzo Maresca's side were made to work considerably harder than they might have expected.
Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal, his third of the season, while Elliot Anderson produced another commanding midfield display. Coventry remained within touching distance throughout and came close to stealing a point late on.
City had already received a warning before taking the lead, with Gianluigi Donnarumma required to intervene as Coventry threatened.
A late change had brought Enzo Fernandez into the starting XI after Nico O'Reilly suffered an injury during the warm up, and Fernandez quickly settled into proceedings.
His pass released Antoine ****** yo, whose delivery was met by Haaland. The Norwegian produced a powerful header to put Man City ahead and seemingly establish the platform for a more comfortable afternoon.

The scene in Bilbao, in 2024, foreshadowed the change that would come. Michele Kang, the owner of OL Lyonnes, strode around the edge of the pitch in the San Mames to greet the travelling supporters of the women's football powerhouse, who were buoyed by her ambition and intent to invest. Barcelona won 2-0 to lift their third Women's Champions League **** le in four years, thanks to goals from their two Ballon d'Or winners Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas. But while Kang, the South Korean-born American billionaire and philanthropist, vowed that Lyonnes would return stronger, her sphere of influence was also primed to have an impact elsewhere.
As well as the French champions, Kang owned two other teams as part of her multi-club Kynisca group, the US side Washington Spirit and the London City Lionesses, based out of Bromley and playing in the second tier of English women's football. Two years on, driven by Kang's vision and fuelled by her deep pockets, London City have secured promotion and undergone a remarkable makeover. From that Champions League final alone, they have signed not just Putellas, making the Spain international and World Cup winner the biggest overseas signing in Women's Super League history, but two of her Barcelona team-mates in Mapi Leon and Jana Fernandez. From sister club Lyonnes, London City have signed two of their starting forwards in Kadidiatou Diani and Delphine Cascarino, as well as midfielder Danielle van de Donk.

Within two years, London City have disrupted women's football and have now set their sights on challenging for the WSL **** le. It has not come cheap: Putellas was a free transfer but is one of the highest-paid women's footballers in the world at around £1m per year. Before the new season, London City have also signed former England goalkeeper Mary Earps from Paris Saint-Germain and have built a team set on challenging **** nal and Chelsea's dominance in the capital. In terms of transfer fees within the WSL, only **** nal and Chelsea have come close to matching the £1m London City paid PSG for midfielder Grace Geyoro last summer. Their position is also a unique one. Of the 14 teams in this season's expanded WSL, London City are the only independent outfit with no affiliation to a men's club, yet their spending comfortably exceeds that of Manchester United and Liverpool, despite the riches that flow from the Premier League.
Kang is the driving force. The 67-year-old, who made her fortune through healthcare technology in the US, is an investor in the true sense of the word, believing in the untapped value and potential of women's sports. Her philanthropy has extended to making $30m and $4m donations to US Soccer and USA Rugby respectively, the latter just hours after watching the US women's rugby sevens team win bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics. London City are likely to make a financial loss in their second season o

Boston Celtics star Paul George could have been in a troubling position if the LA Clippers didn't reject his Kawhi Leonard-like demand in 2024.
After spending five seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, Paul George surprised many with his decision to leave the franchise in 2024 free agency.
George signed a four-year, $212 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers after feeling disrespected by the Clippers' lowball offer.
Fast forward to now, and George must be thankful the Clippers rejected his demands after Kawhi Leonard was found guilty of salary cap circumvention.

However, there are questions over whether Clark will start for Team USA, despite her record-breaking season with the Indiana Fever in the WNBA.
Rachel DeMita, a sports host, and former college basketball player, best known for hosting NBA 2KTV and covering digital basketball media, has weighed in on the debate.
She believes that history shows Caitlin Clark could play a bench role at the upcoming World Cup.

Trevor Story's Blunt Message After Dramatic Red Sox Return Silences Rehab Concerns originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Trevor Story did not need much time to remind the Boston Red Sox what they had been missing. Playing in just his second Major League game since undergoing sports hernia surgery in May, Story delivered two critical hits and drove in three runs during Boston's thrilling 9-8 victory over the Seattle Mariners in 10 innings Monday night at Fenway Park.
His biggest swing came with the bases loaded, two outs and the score tied in the bottom of the 10th. Story worked the count full before driving a sinker from Cooper Criswell off the wall in left-center field, allowing Eli White to score the winning run. Story tossed his bat aside, removed his helmet and disappeared into a celebration with teammates near second base.
For a player who spent more than three months watching the Red Sox from a distance, the moment carried additional significance.
"It means a lot," Story said. "We've been watching from afar for a while, just supporting the boys and just thinking about the times that we can get back on the field and contribute."

It is officially game week for Notre Dame football, as head coach Marcus Freeman spoke to the media on Monday.
The Irish released its availability report, and it's both positive and negative. Starting off with the good news first, it looks like we may see linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa on the field. He's listed as questionable to face Wisconsin, and personally, if it's not close, I don't think there is a need to play him. Surely KVA wants to be out on the field, but it's hopefully a long season and the Irish will need him to be healthy as the season progresses.
As for the bad news, two expected contributors in wide receiver Quincy Porter and offensive lineman Chris Terek won't see the field, as they have been ruled out. Multiple others won't be ready either including offensive linemen Matty Augustine and Charles Jagusah, defensive lineman Christopher Burgess Jr. and Tiki Hola, linebacker Ko'o Kia and defensive back Chaz Smith.
For the most part, Notre Dame looks very healthy as its gets ready to start its season on Sunday evening against the Badgers.

The Denver Broncos' initial 53-man roster came down to the wire, having cut down from 91 players to 53 on Sunday afternoon. There were several surprises from the initial roster, from cutting fan-favorite draft picks to veteran playmakers. We take a more in-depth look at the winners and losers from the first iteration of the 53-man roster.
Ehlinger made a push for the backup quarterback position against Jarrett Stidham this summer. Stidham ended up starting two of Denver's preseason contests, giving him a leg up on Ehlinger. What sealed Ehlinger's spot on the 53-man roster was his performance on Friday against the Minnesota Vikings. Ehlinger went 15-of-20 for 233 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. General manager George Paton said that the team "didn't want to lose him" after a very competitive summer.
McLaughlin was the "last decision we made," according to Paton in a post-cut presser. The writing began to be on the wall when the Broncos put McLaughlin on the practice squad in 2025. McLaughlin became expendable when the Broncos drafted Jonah Coleman in the third round of the 2026 NFL draft.
Conversely, Badie was named to the 53-man roster ahead of McLaughlin. Badie struggled in the preseason, but was one of those players who coach Sean Payton apparently couldn't live without. Badie saw action in 15 of Denver's games, so the trust is there. The fact that Badie made the roster in place of McLaughlin tells a story of the skill set difference between the players.
"Mr. Irrelevant" showed his potential throughout the preseason, making tackles and even forcing a fumble. One could have made a strong case for Murdock, who played his ***** off in camp and the preseason. He was calling plays for Vance Joseph's defense and was one of the biggest surprises of the entire cut process. Hopefully Murdock clears waivers and will be on the practice squad. He was a likeable player, with an even better story.

Celtic are in advanced talks to send winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha to Belgian Pro League club K.A.A. Gent on loan, according to Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph. The structure of the deal includes an option for Gent to sign him permanently for around £3.5 million. Balikwisha, 25, has received permission from Celtic to fly to Belgium and complete a medical.
The DR Congo international was brought in from Royal Antwerp for £5.5 million, but the Scottish champions have now deemed him surplus to requirements. His representatives had been searching for a suitable destination for several weeks.
Balikwisha's time at Celtic has been nothing short of a disaster. The Congolese winger arrived from Antwerp last summer with genuine expectations, only to post 0 goals and 0 ****** ists across 14 appearances throughout the 2025/26 season. He hasn't touched the pitch once in the current 2026/27 campaign.
Those numbers tell a brutal story. In the Scottish Premiership, he failed to register a single shot on target, his dribble success rate sat at a miserable 44%, and he contributed just 2 key passes all season. A ghost, in every statistical sense.
The tactical direction under the Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has moved firmly against wide players who lack structural discipline. Balikwisha's profile, an individualistic, flair-driven attacker, simply didn't fit the system's demand for pressing intensity and defensive positional awareness.

The clock is ticking towards deadline day as Premier League teams race to get deals done. It's been another summer of massive spending from Premier League clubs and there's still plenty of business to be concluded before the window slams shut.
There has been more than £2.5bn spent by English clubs alone this summer, with multiple £100m+ deals, includingChelsea's £117m capture of Morgan Rogers, and Elliot Anderson's £116m transfer to Manchester City.
Expect that total to keep increasing right until the final seconds of the window, as clubs scramble for signings.
The transfer window for Premier League clubs will shut on Tuesday 1st September 2026. Clubs have until 11pm BST on deadline day to submit the required paperwork to concludetransfers.
The transfer windows in La Liga and Serie A also shut on September 1st, though with different timings. Spain's window is aligned with the Premier League, though the window shuts earlier in Italy, with an 8pm deadline.

Lazio are facing an uphill challenge in their quest to sign Juventus winger Edon Zhegrova, as Matteo Cancellieri has reportedly rejected his most keen admirers.
Earlier this week, the Kosovar international emerged as a target for the Biancocelesti, who would like to bolster their flanks after sorting out other departments by signing Alfonso Pedraza, Danilho Doekhi, Davide Frattesi, Josip Sutalo, and most recently Andrea Pinamonti.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Lazio are hoping to acquire Zhegrova on loan with an option to buy from Juventus. The 27-year-old's current net salary is €2.5 million per year, so the Biancocelesti should be able to cover it. However, the pink newspaper insists that the arrival of the former LOSC Lille player would only be plausible if Cancellieri were to leave.
Over the past few days, the Roman winger has been linked with several Serie A clubs, with Genoa making the most concrete offer. But according to Italian journalist Damiano Er Faina, Cancellieri is refusing to join Daniele De Rossi's team.
The 24-year-old might be holding out for a more prestigious destination, like Fiorentina or Bologna, who have more ambitious projects and are aiming to fight for European slots. Perhaps he would end up reconsidering his decision if no other offers arrive, as he risks spending his campaign on the bench, since Gustav Isaksen is reportedly ahead of him in Gennaro Gattuso's pecking order.

Forgotten Chelsea ace Omari Kellyman has completed a permanent move to RC Strasbourg, ending a nightmare two-year spell in West London.
The Blues confirmed the transfer after he signed a five-year contract with the Ligue 1 side.
The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has moved to Chelsea's BlueCo sister club for an undisclosed fee after finding it difficult to establish himself in west London.
Chelsea paid £19 million to sign Kellyman from Aston Villa in the summer of 2024, but his first season at the club was badly affected by injuries, and he did not make a senior competitive appearance.
His fortunes improved significantly during a loan spell at Cardiff City last season.

CHICAGO — Chicago Sky owner Michael Alter isn't backing down after the WNBA team ejected former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom from Sunday's game against the Indiana Fever.
Kanter Freedom attended the game at Wintrust Arena and sat courtside wearing a shirt that read, "WOMAN noun. adult human female." During a verbal exchange with Sky guard Natasha Cloud in the third quarter, Kanter Freedom stepped over photographers to encroach on the baseline during a dead ball.
A combination of team and arena security immediately removed Kanter from the court and eventually from the arena. Alter also immediately left his courtside seat during the altercation and crossed the court to confront Kanter Freedom, visibly instructing him to leave the vicinity and encouraging security to intervene.
It was the latest stunt pulled by the former player as he continues to insert himself into the debate surrounding the inclusion of transgender women in women's sports. Kanter Freedom previously declared for the WNBA draft, causing the league to deny his eligibility earlier this week.
In a conversation Tuesday with local media, Alter said Kanter Freedom will be banned from Sky games at Wintrust Arena for the foreseeable future unless "he's able to prove to our satisfaction that he is able to abide by our rules without being a potential threat."

Kyle Kuzma questions criticism of Sophie Cunningham amid growing controversy originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Sophie Cunningham's comments about transgender participation in women's sports have sparked a wide-ranging debate, and Milwaukee Bucks forward Kyle Kuzma has now entered the conversation.
The former NBA champion publicly defended Cunningham after sportscaster Chris Williamson suggested the Indiana Fever guard's comments contributed to political hostility directed toward transgender people.
Kuzma questioned that interpretation in an X post, arguing that Cunningham's stated position centered on competitive fairness and the protection of opportunities for women and girls.
"What was transphobic about her comment?" Kuzma wrote, before reiterating Cunningham's position and sarcastically questioning whether she deserved discipline.

It was difficult to gauge where Sunderland actually stood in the summer of 1991.
Denis Smith had worked wonders to drag the club from the Third Division up to the top tier of English football in three years, but in so many ways, his progress was too quick for the club to keep up.
The promotions were achieved on a shoestring budget and were supplemented with a long list of names that Smith had brought through the ranks and fast-tracked into the first-team squad. Names such as Gary Owers, Paul Williams, Richard Ord, Brian Atkinson, Kieron Brady, David Rush and Warren Hawke were all given opportunities, and there's probably more, as those are just off the top of my head.
Smith's budget following promotion to the First Division in 1990 was set at £500,000, but it didn't include an increase in the wage budget. This resulted in one-in, one-out, so Peter Davenport replaced Eric Gates and Kevin Ball took the place of John MacPhail. It maybe didn't come as a surprise that, in a season where only two sides went down, we were one of them.
So, in 1991-92, we found ourselves back in Division Two and we were one of the favourites to go up – but without funds once again, Smith was unable to freshen up the squad and there were no new arrivals ahead of the opening day of the season.

The Eagles offense looked much better in its second time out, but it wasn't enough to leave Gillette Stadium with a preseason win (gasp!)
Here are the players/people who either helped their stock or hurt it during the 24-21 loss:
As I mulled over which of the Eagles developmental offensive linemen I should begin with on my stock report, the conversation from a few months ago surrounding the potential drop-off in development for those exact players because of Jeff Stoutland's departure came to mind.
For as loud as the concerns about the Eagles continuing to bring along unusual offensive linemen in a post-Stoutland world were after the longtime **** istant coach's resignation in February, it feels fitting to begin tonight's stock report with Kuper, who has done a nice job in his first summer as offensive line coach with the likes of Markel Bell, Drew Kendall, and Willie Lampkin.
Each member of that trio had highlight moments in the early going of a resurgent night from the Eagles offense. Bell carved out a massive running lane for Will Shipley on the Eagles' first scoring drive of the night and, on the next play, Lampkin and Kendall combined for a combo block that washed two Patriots defenders five yards off the line of scrimmage as Will Shipley ran in for a touchdown.

Alexander Isak cost Liverpool £125m. That number follows him everywhere, and it should. Fees of that size come with scrutiny, expectation and, sooner or later, output. After a first season wrecked by fitness issues and a serious injury, the Liverpool striker heads back to Newcastle United on Sunday with a point to prove and a manager making it very clear what comes next.
Andoni Iraola has not dressed it up. He sees this as a major campaign for Isak, and there is logic to that. Liverpool need far more than flashes. They need availability, goals and consistency from a forward signed to lead the line.
Iraola put it plainly: "I think it is a massive season for Alexander. He knows at the end it is (about) two things: the first is availability, and without availability we cannot have the second thing, which is the performance level.
"But I think this has to be the first aim for us, to keep him in a good place in terms of being available. I'm sure if we manage to do this he will perform well because he has been very good during the pre-season.
"If we can keep him at a good level he will score his goals and he will be a threat. I have no doubts about his level."

The idea for dozens of Premier League forwards is simple, but it is far from easy — score more goals than Erling Haaland.
MORE — Premier League all-time goals leaders
The race for the 2026-27 Premier League Golden Boot is on, with Kai Havertz flying out of the starting block to score the season's first goal on August 21.
He was only in front for a few minutes as teammate Bukayo Saka joined him. Many more will join their ranks over the course of this 380-match Premier League season.
Haaland now has three Golden Boots in four seasons.

Can I maybe give a starting five? Obviously Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, I'd say like OKC Kevin Durant, and one more. I'd say 2011 Dirk Nowitzki.

Manchester City have set their sights on a deal for AS Roma's Manu Kone following the confirmation of Tijjani Reijnders's exit yesterday.
Reijnders joined Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Qadsiah after only one season at the Etihad.
Having also facilitated the departure of talisman Rodri to Barcelona in recent days, Enzo Maresca is now sweating over how his side will be lining up for the season ahead with such crucial names gone.
Along with the two midfielders this week, long-serving Blues Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and John Stones all bid farewell to City at the end of 2025/2026 – not to mention the fact that Pep Guardiola also pulled the curtains on his tenure.
His successor, formerly of Chelsea and Leicester City, faces an uphill battle to maintain the standard Guardiola had set over the last nine years.
