40 days out from playing against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish inside Lambeau Field, the Wisconsin Badgers are on the cusp of a program-defining year.
It'll be head coach Luke Fickell's fourth year as the lead man in Madison. When Fickell first came to Wisconsin in 2022, so did lofty expectations of what the program could achieve with him at the helm. But a 17-21 record in three seasons has left Wisconsin as a shell of the program it once was.
2026 may be Fickell's last chance to prove he's the right man for the job, especially with the increased financial investment into the program and the arrival of a new Athletic Director.
In order for the Badgers to right the ship, they'll need to find out who the most valuable players are on their roster. For this ranking, value will be defined by how much a player's absence would impact Wisconsin's chances of winning.

Quarterback Rocco Becht is intent on setting things right in 2026. Becht's transfer to Penn State after a rough 2025 season, along with several of his teammates, gives him a unique opportunity to start anew. Along with pass catchers Chase Sowell, Brett Eskildsen, and Benjamin Brahmer, Becht is looking to elevate the production of the offense. However, during Big Ten media day, Becht highlighted the role that a returner could play in the offense.
"That guy is really special," Becht said of sophomore wideout Koby Howard. "He did a lot of good things in spring ball and he's probably going to do a lot of great things in fall camp [and] in the season for us. So, hopefully I can get him over 1,000 yards receiving, but something I'm looking forward to is just playing with him." While that is a lofty goal to set for a receiver you have never worked with, it is one that should intrigue Penn State fans.
Howard is the youngest member of Penn State's new-look receiving corps and is also the only player who got meaningful snaps at the position. Still, being a true freshman meant that he didn't receive many targets either. He only caught seven passes for 133 yards. This year, with Becht now at the helm, Howard will almost certainly see more snaps.
Whether or not he breaks 1,000 yards remains to be seen. After all, Penn State receivers have not covered themselves in glory in that regard over the past several years. Still, both Becht and Howard have apparently built a nice rapport with each other during fall camp, with Howard serving as a potential touchstone to Becht during his transition to life in Happy Valley. That connection may not result in a breakout season for Howard, but it could definitely be better than last season for Howard as well.

Saltburn Cricket Club have suspended a player, humorously called "Clicky Ponting", after he was accused of cheating during a local league match by clicking his fingers to make it sound like the batter had edged the ball.
The incident, which happened during Saltburn's second XI win over Norton, went viral on social media after video footage appeared to show the fielder making the sound just before the wicketkeeper completed the catch.
The umpire gave the batter out, sparking widespread criticism online.
Responding to the controversy, Saltburn Cricket Club, an English outfit, said they were taking the allegations seriously and had suspended the player while an investigation is underway.
In a statement, the club said, "We are treating this allegation with the utmost seriousness and, as a family-centric club, we are fully cooperating with the NYS League's investigation."
The statement added, "The player at the centre of the complaint has been suspended and will not play again for the club this season or in the foreseeable future, pending the outcome of this investigation."
Saltburn have also withdrawn from their second-team cup match against Marton as the investigation continues. Club officials have already spoken with league representatives and said the situation has been difficult for everyone involved.
They added, "This has been a very distressing and stressful experience for all those concerned, and we would ask that this reality is borne in mind and that personal boundaries are respected, as we are an amateur club entirely run by volunteers."
The viral clip has now been viewed more than 7.5 million times on X, with several well-known figures criticising the alleged act.

The Boston Red Sox should be better after trading for infielder Curtis Mead.
It's going to take more than that if they want to contend for the American League, though…
Mead was certainly worth the price they paid in order to obtain his services, as his presence not only ensures there will be some added pop to the lineup but puts others in a position to succeed. If you're not convinced that he was worth giving up on starting pitcher Connelly Early, perhaps heed the words of chief baseball officer Craig Breslow on Sunday.
"I've tried to shift our goal… not to win the trade but to make our major league team better."
Mead makes them better, but not as good as they'll need to be to contend — which is why it is imperative that they continue both adding around the margins and taking swings at moves that can make them better both now and in the future.

The halfway point of the 2026 WNBA season is here. The All-Star Game is over and the trade deadline looms at 3 p.m. ET, Aug. 2. Teams must now decide if they're going all-in for a championship run or hitting the reset ****** on ahead of next season.

If you've been a fan of the Washington Commanders for a while, then you've certainly heard of Eastern Motors. You didn't have to live in Northern Virginia to know of Eastern Motors. For over 20 years, Washington players have partnered with Easterns to do commercials ahead of the new season.
Players such as Clinton Portis, Sean Taylor, Santana Moss, Chris Cooley, Kirk Cousins, LaVar Arrington and Terry McLaurin have starred in advertisements. NHL legend Alexander Ovechkin has been a part of the Eastern family, too.
As for McLaurin, he's back to do another commercial for Easterns, now known as Easterns Automotive Group, for 2026. He brought a new partner this time around: rookie linebacker Sonny Styles.
Easterns has multiple locations throughout the DMV, mostly in Maryland. McLaurin and Styles showed up ready for work on Thursday.

Jürgen Klopp has signed a deal until 2030 to become Germany coach and told a news conference on Friday he was "delighted" - but warned the press he would quit if they "misbehave."
The former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool boss was the DFB's immediate first choice to succeed Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following the World Cup last-32 exit to Paraguay in June.
Klopp has been global head of soccer at the sports arm of drinks maker Red Bull but will now lead Germany into the Nations League, qualifying for Euro 2028 in the British Isles and qualifiers for the 2030 World Cup. His contract will begin on August 15.
"It is a big honour to sit here," Klopp said in Frankfurt. "I had an idea how big the job is but when you are involved, you feel the responsibility even more. It is a very special day for me."
His first match in charge will be against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on September 24 in Germany's opening Nations League fixture.

The extended (and oversaturated) NFL offseason is finally over, dearest readers.
This week and next will see all 32 teams report to their respective training camps. While we’re still technically about seven or so weeks away from real games being played with people keeping score, the return of camp marks the end of the offseason. We will finally have some pro football to talk about. Yes, that includes some NFL players “being in the best shape of their lives” at the most convenient and stereotypical time. And yes, that includes even discussing the proverbial quarterback competition on the surefire last-place team that won’t matter come late September.
NFL PREVIEW: Every team’s biggest addition in 2026
For those of you starved to talk about that whole real football thing, there’s a lot of questions to unpack. Can the reigning Super Bowl champion Seahawks, led by Sam Darnold, repeat? What, if anything, can stop the Los Angeles Rams from unleashing total destruction on the entire league? Are ascending squads like the Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars ready to take the next step? Can the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens, led by their respective MVP-caliber signal-callers, re-open their championship windows? Is there any hope for the NFC South? Uh, any at all?

ESPN and the rest of the sports media industry were left reeling Tuesday as the Mothership ejected approximately 10 on-air talents, while pink-slipping a large contingent of behind-the-scenes staffers at NFL Network.
After speaking with multiple sources, here are my five takeaways from the layoffs, which included ESPN dropping talents such as Ryan Clark, Karl Ravech, David Lloyd, Tom Pelissero, Cam Newton, and Bart Scott:
Chairman Jimmy Pitaro made it clear that ESPN's biggest round of layoffs in three years was tied directly to Disney's acquisition of NFL Network. Anytime two companies merge, the bean counters look at who's doing what. When they find two people doing the same job—or close to it—one goes out the door.
That's what's happening as ESPN absorbs a network it competed with for over 20 years. ESPN has made "significant progress" integrating NFLN, Pitaro wrote in an internal memo obtained by Front Office Sports. But as always with mergers, it "had to make some difficult decisions," added Pitaro.
ESPN will broadcast its first-ever Super Bowl from SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Feb. 14, 2027. Televising a Super Bowl has been a corporate dream of ESPN's since its founding as a scrappy wannabe in 1979. ESPN management and parent company Disney are laser-focused on creating the best, most thorough Super Bowl coverage ever. Anybody on-air during what ESPN is humbly calling its "Year of the Super Bowl" will go down in company history. The competition for those choice on-air slots will be brutal.
The game announce team of Troy Aikman, Joe Buck, Lisa Salters, and Laura Rutledge are locks. Ditto for Sunday NFL Countdown regulars Mike Greenberg, Rex Ryan, Randy Moss, Alex Smith, Tedy Bruschi and Adam Schefter. And look for legendary anchor Chris Berman to play a major role as the living embodiment of ESPN's 47-year history.

Two other coaches have been run out of Philadelphia ever since Andy Reid's 14-year reign ended in 2012. Chip Kelly's innovations ended up wearing out his players − and his welcome − by his third season. The Georgia Bulldogs have missed out on four-star defensive lineman Kadin Fife, who is a member of the class of 2027. Fife was previously committed to the Tennessee Volunteers from Nov. 2025 to June 2026 and was predicted to commit to Georgia. However, the four-star committed to the Louisville Cardinals in a bit of a surprise.
Fife's commitment is an enormous recruiting win for coach Jeff Brohm and Louisville. The Cardinals needed some momentum on the recruiting trail and only have the nation's No. 50 recruiting class. Fife is one of Louisville's highest rated commitments. The Cardinals have 16 commitments in the class of 2027.

Fox broadcasters Joe Davis and John Smoltz interviewed National League manager Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers and American League manager John Schneider of the Toronto Blue Jays during the seventh inning of the 2026 MLB All-Star Game broadcast.
During Reds first-time All-Star and NL Rookie of the Year candidate Sal Stewart's plate appearance in that inning, which resulted in a walk, Roberts offered praise of Stewart with an anecdote he shared during the broadcast.
"He came into my office … and he said, 'Hey, I'd love to take five, 10, 15 minutes and tell me anything, give me something,'" Roberts said. "And we talked for like 20 minutes about what it means to be a competitor, about winning pitches, and about getting people around you that (help you) to play the game the right way and what standard you set. So, we went deep. But it was just impressive. A first-year All-Star coming to the manager's office and said, 'Give me anything, some nuggets.'"
Stewart leads the Reds in multiple offensive categories, including home runs, doubles and RBIs.

After another playoff run that ended sooner than they had hoped, the team made some bold moves in a bid to get over the hump. Of course, as we now know, the biggest move the team was made was trading for star guard LaMelo Ball from the Charlotte Hornets.
To do so, the Wolves had to ship out Julius Randle, Naz Reid, and several other **** ets. The team felt like the current core had peaked, though, and big changes seemed necessary. On Tuesday, the team formally introduced Ball, as well as Josh Green, who should also play a nice role for the team this season.
Immediately after the news of the trade, people were excited imagining a backcourt featuring Ball and Anthony Edwards. Edwards has cemented himself as one of the best players in the league, so having a competent backcourt mate could help him reach a new level.

The 2026 Home Run Derby was as memorable as they come. Jordan Walker of the St. Louis Cardinals and Kyle Schwarber of the hometown Philadelphia Phillies dueled in a thrilling final round, with the former coming out on top.
Schwarber hit 11 home runs in the final round, then Walker put himself into a position where he needed six consecutive bombs to win. The math and crowd were not on his side. Slowly but surely, though, Walker inched closer. Walker unlocked the bonus round after three straight home runs, and he unleashed three more for a miraculous win that silenced the Philadelphia crowd.
It was an electric scene at Citizens Bank Park as Walker, who remained calm and composed throughout the competition, rejoiced upon his win.
Walker tied for the most home runs of the first round with 13, then eliminated Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero with six homers in the semifinals. Schwarber punched his finals ticket by finishing just one home run above Willson Contreras' eight in Round 2.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is confident his team will keep their cool in the heat of Wednesday's World Cup semi-final against Argentina.
The rivalry between the two teams is one of the spiciest in world football, influenced by events on and off the pitch.
Pickford said England had largely avoided flashpoints during the 2026 tournament and can cope with the pressure.
"I think you've seen throughout the tournament our desire to win tackles. We've not got into any scuffles or anything," he said Monday at England's training base in Kansas City.
"We've been very well respected within the game. Decisions go our way, they don't go our way, we just reset, we go again and we let the football do the talking.

LONDON (AP) — The wave of players leaving Women’s Champions League winner Barcelona continued Monday with Mapi León joining London City Lionesses, where Alexia Putellas will again be a teammate.
London City said the 31-year-old León had signed a three-year contract as a free agent after her contract expired at Barcelona.
León won four Champions League **** les in nine seasons at the heart of Barcelona’s defense, all spent with Putellas as playmaker.
Putellas joined London City last week as a statement signing for the fast-rising club owned by United States businesswoman Michele Kang.
“What can I say about Michele?” León said in a club statement. “She is an inspirational woman who wants women’s football to develop and thrive.”

Two Saints — and several more — have the chance to go marching into professional baseball.
Four more Jacksonville-area ballplayers, two from Sandalwood High School, received the call during the second day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, which concluded July 12 in Philadelphia.
Current Sandalwood senior Bane Barker and Sandalwood graduate Dakota Stone, now pitching at the University of North Florida, joined Bishop Snyder High School senior Cody Boshell and former Bartram Trail High School pitcher Ashton Pocol on the list of selections in the 20-round draft.
Boshell, a combination pitcher and first baseman at Bishop Snyder, came off the board in the 11th round at No. 326 to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 2026, he batted .284 with five doubles, three home runs, 16 RBI and a .920 OPS, while finishing 4-2 with a 2.53 earned run average and 67 strikeouts on the mound.
Boshell, who hit 16 home runs during his four years at Bishop Snyder, now faces the decision whether to sign with the Diamondbacks or to proceed to college baseball at Tennessee, the 2024 College World Series champion.

Manchester City and Norway star Erling Haaland has this weekend moved to reveal his appreciation for the talents of Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham.
This of course comes fresh off the latter's latest standout performance on the international stage.
Bellingham's England went head-to-head with Norway on Saturday evening, with a place in the semi-finals of the World Cup on the line. And en route to an eventual 2-1 Three Lions triumph, Bellingham proved himself the star of the show.

While Major League Baseball’s draft began in relatively predictable fashion — UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky was chosen first overall by the Chicago White Sox, despite some smoke and a few mirrors in recent days — it also had its share of unforeseen turns.

Perhaps general managers took one of the most cynical phrases of scouting — “There’s no such thing as a pitching prospect” — a little too literally. This draft made history when 15 of the first 16 players selected were hitters. The San Francisco Giants the only ones zagging by taking UC Santa Barbara right-hander Jackson Flora fourth overall. After that, a pitcher didn’t get selected until the Texas Rangers took Gio Rojas, the lefty from Florida baseball factory Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, with the 16th pick.
What gives? Well, many of the anticipated top college arms had concerns. Cameron Flukey missed time with a rib fracture this year, leaving him available to the Detroit Tigers at No. 22. Logan Reddenmann and Cole Carlon each suffered velocity dips late in the year, leaving them available to the Colorado Rockies and Toronto Blue Jays, respectively, at picks 38 and 39. Strange, but it felt like Dominick Puni broke out in his rookie year in 2024. Unfortunately, his 2025 saw a bit of a regression after a solid 2024 campaign. Blame it on a PCL injury in August, but that was just his first month.
Could the San Francisco 49ers' right guard be poised for a breakout? It wouldn't be the first time we've seen a player go from a decent rookie season to a step back in year 2 and then get it all together in year 3.
Over at NFL.com, Bucky Brooks put together an offensive all-breakout team of one player per position who he thought would have a significant rise in stock. Puni was the only 49er who made the list:
The 2024 third-round pick has started 36 consecutive games (postseason included) in an offense that relies on his punishing skills at the point of attack. As a mauler who specializes in moving defenders off the ball, Puni is an essential piece to the 49ers' dynamic running game. Although the heavy-handed shadow boxer must continue to improve in pass protection, San Francisco has a Pro Bowler in the making at right guard.
The final year of Puni's contract is 2027, so that gives him two more years to justify a lucrative extension. As KP said in the post linked above, New York Jets' Joe Tippmann is a good comparison of what kind of extension Puni could get right now—but Puni's actual numbers resemble Dallas Cowboys' Tyler Smith.

The squad that ***** embled in front of newly installed head coach Michael Carrick and his coaching team on Thursday only partially resembles the group he will work with before the opening Premier League game of the 2026-27 campaign at Hull City on 22 August.
None of the players selected for the World Cup are back yet.
In addition, Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt is still working on his recovery from back surgery.

The Dodgers scratched Shohei Ohtani from his scheduled start on Friday against the Arizona Diamondbacks due to irritation in his left knee, an ailment that has plagued him off and on for the last month. Ohtani will still be the designated hitter this weekend, but won't travel to Philadelphia to take part in All-Star Game festivities.
Ohtani left a game in which he was the designated hitter on June 10 in Pittsburgh, but made his pitching start the next day on June 11. He has a 4.38 ERA in his four starts since, but has lasted at least six innings each time out with a 3.32 xERA, 26.2-percent strikeout rate, and 7.5-percent walk rate. That's compared to a 0.74 ERA, 2.45 xERA, 28.8-percent strikeout rate and 7.7-percent walk rate in his first 10 starts.
At the plate Ohtani has homered twice this week but so far through seven July games has just six hits in 27 at-bats, hitting .222/.323/.444.
In a press release the Dodgers said Ohtani will undergo "interventions" in his left knee beginning after Sunday's game. Manager Dave Roberts told reporters Friday at Dodger Stadium Ohtani would get fluid drained from his left knee.
