The Indiana Fever said neither the team nor Sophie Cunningham were aware of the "Support Sophie Cunningham" rally held outside Climate Pledge Arena ahead of their game Tuesday against the Seattle Storm. The event was held in support of the Fever guard's recent comments regarding transgender athletes in girls' and women's sports.
"Neither our organization nor Sophie had any knowledge of this demonstration and no contact with its organizers," a statement from the Fever reads. "Our only goal as a team, whether at home or away, is to win basketball games and make Fever fans for life, and we are united in that mission."
The event was organized by Women are Real, Brandi Kruse and Known Heretic, and comes after Cunningham said in an ESPN profile that she wanted to protect young girls in locker rooms and in sport who "shouldn't have to go against biological men."
She reinforced those beliefs ahead of last week's game vs. the Connecticut Sun.
"It's kind of common sense, and I think I'll always believe in that," Cunningham said. "I think it's really important to protect children, and that's little girls who are also involved in that category. So I stand on what I said, and I'll always believe that."

That's good news: the Viola needed to refresh a stale, ailing group. What I'm interested in, though, is the senior players the new sporting director has sold. No, I don't mean outcasts like Lucas Beltrán and Amir Richardson and Alessandro Bianco. I don't mean unfortunate salary casualty Robin Gosens. No, I mean all the academy-trained talent in the system.
Until the Viola create a B-team, it will lose a crop of academy kids every summer. Most of them never had a chance of breaking through to the first team. For the handful who might have the quality, finding an acceptable path within the club is difficult. The most common outcome is what happened to, say, Eduard Duțu last year: a promising young defender, he ended up on 7 loan deals before leaving Florence for good last year without ever making a senior appearance. Guys like Luca Ranieri—loans to Foggia, Ascoli, SPAL, and Salernitana before breaking through—are the exception. It's rare for to see one of these youngsters take that final step.
Young players matter to fans in a way they don't to the club itself. For fans, every 17-year-old who dribbles a 3rd-tier defender in preseason becomes a future star. That's not just luxurious thinking. We need that fantasy—the academy contains untold riches—because it reinforces two narratives that sustain us, especially through the lean years. First, we get to believe that we know ball and can identify buried talent because that allows us to think of ourselves as knowledgeable, superior, and in control of something over which we actually exert no control. Second, we get to think that Fiorentina is doing something better than other clubs, allowing us to enjoy vicarious success and prove to ourselves that there's a reason to support an organization that constantly falls short.

Josko Gvardiol has become the second Manchester City defender to commit his future to the club this week by signing a new deal.
The Croatia international has put pen to paper on a five-year contract, with an option for a sixth season.
Gvardiol follows Abdukodir Khusanov, who also agreed a contract extension, as City's defence for the future takes shape after the departures of John Stones and Nathan Ake.
The most expensive defender in City's history, Gvardiol cost £77m when he joined from RB Leipzig in 2023 and went on to win the club's player-of the-year award for 2024-25.
He had attracted interest from Real Madrid but said: "As soon as City wanted to renew my contract, I knew it was what I wanted."

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison on Tuesday praised Roberto De Zerbi as the type of attacking coach that suited his game and said he was "excited" by what lay ahead.

Tonight's A's starter is 28-year-old lefty Jacob Lopez. He throws a low-90s fastball, a slider, cutter, change and sinker. When he fools hitters, he's good at minimizing hard contact, but he doesn't fool them often enough and he walks a lotta guys, which equals a 6.64 ERA (and 5.77 FIP) for this season.
The reasons the A's left Oakland are complex, but here's the very simple version: John Fisher is a useless failson s**theap who wants as much public money as he can possibly get, because he sucks.
The slightly longer version? The Oakland Coliseum was an old-ish building in poor repair (several instances of raw sewage in the dugouts, a much cuter invasion of feral cats), and — more importantly — featured very little in the way of luxury/premium seating. The team had wanted a new building since at least 2001, and had floated the idea of leaving the city altogether but staying in the Bay Area. A notion of moving to San Jose (40 miles away) was nixed by the Giants, who had territorial rights there; one of moving to to Fremont (25 miles away) was nixed by the city of Fremont.
The A's signed a 10-year lease renewal in 2014, with the understanding that the team would seek a new stadium in the same county as Oakland. The team proposed several dumb, greedy ideas which were shot down, and eventually useless failson Fisher got his heart set on part of Oakland's Howard Terminal. The city was half willing to work with him on that one, since they had their own ideas about redeveloping the area, but there were significant problems including interference with other industries, infrastructure costs, environmental concerns, inevitable sea level rise, and so on.
Still, when the city and the team were only about $100 million apart on a $12 billion project, the deal fell apart in 2023. Useless failson Fisher announced he would be moving the team to Las Vegas. There's lots of details behind this, but the best explanation came from the then-mayor's chief of staff: "I don't think he [Fisher] got cold feet. I think he got an accountant."

Peter Gagliardo, an adaptive sports coordinator and peer counselor at Helen Hayes Rehabilitation Hospital, is preparing to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, a feat achieved by only 45 other wheelchair users.
Gagliardo, who has used a wheelchair since a motorcycle accident 20 years ago, said his goal is to show what is possible while living with a disability. He works full time at Helen Hayes, where he helps people return to activities they enjoyed before being injured.
"We're doing everything that you can think of to get people like myself back to doing what they loved before they got injured," Gagliardo said.
One of those people is former patient Freddy Tiburcio, who participates in adaptive sports and recreational activities.
"We do marathons, and all the different activities," Tiburcio said. "Wheelchair softball. Fishing."

Between the NBA Summer League and free agency, the NBA offseason has been nothing short of hectic. Multiple superstars have switched teams, with some being traded while others chose new destinations in free agency. The offseason isn’t over just yet, with a few notable players still left to decide where they’ll sign.

The Three Lions are looking to reach the World Cup final for the first time in 60 years against the South Americans.
But City defender Guéhi says the England players aren't feeling any pressure ahead of what is a huge game.
On the contrary – he believes it is the Argentines who will feel the weight of expectation.
"There isn't pressure on us," Guéhi said. "What's the pressure? The onus is on them.

After spending the spring semester at Iowa Western Community College, former Aliquippa and Penn State running back Tikey Hayes is set to commit to Nebraska for the 2026 college football season, as first reported by Sean Callahan of On3 Sports.
Following the firing of head coach James Franklin during his freshman season, Hayes took his talents to Iowa Western Community College, a JUCO Powerhouse that has produced numerous Division I prospects, and the Aliquippa native will now be a part of that growing list.
Hayes was one of the top running backs in the country while at Aliquippa, rated as a four-star prospect by Rivals and a three-star by 247 Sports, On3 and ESPN. He was also the No. 20 ranked running back and No. 7 prospect in Pennsylvania.
During his freshman season at Penn State, Hayes got limited action, appearing in one game in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl, where he rushed three times for 18 yards.

The WNBA star, who plays for the Indiana Fever, was in attendance for Saturday's event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. She ended up being the ring girl for the co-main event between Paddy Pimblett and Benoit Saint Denis.
But how did that end up happening? UFC CEO White explained.
"(We hired her) about eight minutes before she did it," White said during the UFC 329 post-fight news conference. "I love Sophie Cunningham. We've created a relationship and she was here tonight. When she walked in, she goes, 'I want to walk around that (octagon).' I said, 'Then you're going to walk around it.' She's fun."
Cunningham dropped 20 points on 6-7 threes in the Fever's win over Las Vegas Aces on Sunday, with White in attendance. She reacted to her surprise experience.

Tennessee will kick off its sixth football season under Josh Heupel on Sept. 5 at Neyland Stadium. The Vols will host Furman at 3:30 p.m. EDT (SEC Network+).
Tennessee enters fall training camp with four quarterbacks on roster: early enrollee freshman Brandon Faizon, redshirt freshman George MacIntyre, redshirt freshman Mason Phillips and redshirt junior transfer Ryan Staub from Colorado.
MacIntyre appeared in two contests as a freshman in 2025. He played against East Tennessee State and New Mexico State. The 6-foot-6, 208-pound signal-caller completed 7-of-9 passing attempts for 69 yards. His longest completion was 17 yards.
Phillips made his collegiate debut in the fourth quarter against East Tennessee State on Sept. 6, 2025. He recorded 18 rushing yards on two attempts. The 6-foot-1, 188-pound quarterback's longest rushing attempt was 16 yards.
Staub played three seasons at Colorado from 2023-25. He appeared in 12 games for the Buffaloes and completed 53-of-98 passing attempts for 681 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. Tennessee enters fall training camp with four quarterbacks on roster: early enrollee freshman Brandon Faizon, redshirt freshman George MacIntyre, redshirt freshman Mason Phillips and redshirt junior transfer Ryan Staub from Colorado.
MacIntyre appeared in two contests as a freshman in 2025. He played against East Tennessee State and New Mexico State. The 6-foot-6, 208-pound signal-caller completed 7-of-9 passing attempts for 69 yards. His longest completion was 17 yards.
Phillips made his collegiate debut in the fourth quarter against East Tennessee State on Sept. 6, 2025. He recorded 18 rushing yards on two attempts. The 6-foot-1, 188-pound quarterback's longest rushing attempt was 16 yards.
Staub played three seasons at Colorado from 2023-25. He appeared in 12 games for the Buffaloes and completed 53-of-98 passing attempts for 681 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. The 6-foot-1, 204-pound quarterback started in two games: at Houston on Sept. 12, 2025 and at Utah on Nov. 25, 2023.

Following England's World Cup quarter-final victory over Norway, ****** nal midfielder Declan Rice was seen consoling Gunners captain Martin Ødegaard after the final whistle. While they were fierce competitors for 90 minutes, club loyalties quickly took over once the match was finished.

Jude Bellingham scored twice as England came from behind to beat Norway 2-1 after extra time on Saturday and reach the World Cup semi-finals.
Andreas Schjelderup gave the Norwegians the lead in the 36th minute, but Bellingham equalized before the break.
Harry Kane had a goal ruled out shortly before half-time, while Torbjørn Heggem's effort for Norway in the 55th was also disallowed and the game headed to extra time.
And just three minutes in, Bellingham was on target once more to score the winner.
"It's difficult out there, it's a tough shift. All the players have put in a tough shift. My thoughts and appreciation goes to the players our there who put in a great shift," Bellingham said.

The Kentucky Wildcats still have one final roster spot remaining, but Mark Pope isn't in any rush to get it filled. As the team heads to Las Vegas for some bonding and a few fun events, the third-year head coach is feeling good about his roster as he enters Year 3.
Pope joined KSR on Wednesday for a handful of questions from Matt Jones, and he didn't hold anything back as the listeners wanted honest answers from the Wildcats coach. When asked if he would add a player to this upcoming season's roster, Pope said the coaching staff is always in an active recruiting ******* e, but he's very content with where his team is at right now.
"Maybe. We're still active. I love my roster right now, but if we find the right piece at the right time, it could look different. It could be a devolpmental piece or it could be a depth piece," Pope said on KSR.
"I like our gym. Our gym feels good. You know, we set out with some very clear intentions as we worked through the portal, trying to put this particular team together, and I think I like where we are. I think we have a ton of creator vibe, and we're seeing that on the practice floor," Pope added.
As always, Pope has been raving about the current form of his roster. The backcourt depth has been a big emphasis as the coaching staff brought in a couple of true playmakers with size, unlike the past couple of seasons. Bringing in true shot creators, surrounded by shooters, will be a big help to this squad.

The 23-year-old entered Wimbledon ranked 114th in the world but will rise to 36th in the world, making him the new British No 1, after becoming only the second wildcard to reach the semi-finals at the Championships.
Fery was ranked outside the world’s top 300 this time last year and only cracked the world’s top 200 in October. He entered the world’s top 100, a significant career milestone, after beating Zizou Bergs in the third round.
Should Fery continue his remarkable Wimbledon run and upset second seed Alexander Zverev in Friday’s semi-finals, the French-born Fery will head to the US Open inside the top 30 in the world and could even be seeded for the final grand slam of the season. He started the 2026 season by qualifying for the Australian Open.

These rankings did factor into the overall rankings you saw over the last few weeks, but Scott Bair promised you a Tyler’s Take with my thoughts – so here it is!

Several hundred people, mostly men and boys as young as 7, gathered around wall-mounted screens ahead of the kickoff whistle.
The scene played out across the soccer-mad nation as Egypt faced the defending World Cup champion in the round-of-16 fixture in Atlanta.
It was a historic day for millions of Egyptians even after their national team’s adventure reached its end with Tuesday’s 2-3 loss to Argentina.
“It’s a brutal scenario,” Ahmed Saadany, a teacher, reflected after the game. “The journey shouldn't have ended that way.”

Following an embarrassing end to the tournament, Ronaldo received support from thousands of fans, including legendary American boxer Floyd Mayweather.

The USA squad got a massive jolt when striker Folarin Balogun’s red card was suspended, making him eligible to play on Monday. But there’s a case to be made that the most important player on the field for the USA will be midfielder Tyler Adams.
While Adams’ impact doesn’t always end with goals to his name, he orchestrates the United States’ offense and dictates the game’s rhythm. When the team looks like a cohesive unit, it’s usually because the 27-year-old Adams is putting together a masterful performance.

A year ago today, the trajectory of the Washington Nationals changed drastically. Manager Davey Martinez and President of Baseball Operations Mike Rizzo were fired on July 6th, 2025. The duo had led the Nats to a World Series **** le in 2019, but in the midst of a disappointing season, it was clear that they were no longer the right men to lead the franchise forward.
After the World Series in 2019, the Nats quickly aged out of contention, and the lack of depth on the farm meant that there were no replacements. In 2021, Mike Rizzo decided to sell off veteran pieces and lead the franchise into a rebuild. With a World Series ring only a couple years prior, Rizzo and Martinez were allowed to lead the Nats into this new era.
In 2022, the reality of the rebuild set in. This would be an even longer process than expected. That meant 23 year old future Hall of Famer Juan Soto had to be traded. The move was a painful one, but it turned out to be the best decision Mike Rizzo made in the rebuild. He got three cornerstone pieces in James Wood, CJ Abrams and MacKenzie Gore.
However, Rizzo’s lack of success in the draft and Martinez’s archaic coaching staff meant the fruits of that trade could not be fully realized. By 2025, the Nats were stuck. They had nice pieces, but there was a clear disconnect between the coaching staff and the players, and the roster was far too top heavy. With the Nats sitting at 37-53, the Lerner family made the big decision to fire Rizzo and Martinez.
A year later, that decision is looking very wise. Right now, the Nats are above .500 with a 46-45 record. Under Paul Toboni and Blake Butera, the organization has quickly modernized and embraced **** ytics in a way that they had not in the past.
