FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The effort and energy Tim Polasek has poured into North Dakota State's football program on the climb to the FBS can be easily sourced back to his rural roots.
As a small-college quarterback on summer and winter breaks, and later to supplement a meager income as he launched a career in coaching, Polasek worked grueling jobs as a logger in the woods of central Wisconsin and on the overnight shift at a steel mill near his tiny hometown of Iola.
Appreciation for the unglamourous work as a small-college ***** istant sure comes quick with that background.
"I learned a lot there: That could be you if you don't graduate college and pursue something," said Polasek, who is 28-3 with the Bison since becoming head coach in 2024. "Seeing those tough jobs and other people having to execute that every day really always makes it an honor and a privilege to be the leader of this program."
Having handily beaten Jacksonville State and Fordham in their first two games, the Bison will face one of their biggest tests as a first-year FBS team on Saturday night: Their Mountain West Conference opener at Air Force.

The dispute surrounding Ahmed Sayed "Zizo" has moved beyond the football authorities after Zamalek treasurer Hossam El-Mandouh revealed plans to raise questions over player contracts in Parliament.
El-Mandouh, who is also a member of the Egyptian House of Representatives, believes the figures surrounding Zizo's contract warrant further scrutiny and has called for state intervention in reviewing footballers' agreements.

Cathy Engelbert is stepping down as WNBA commissioner, ending a polarizing tenure that saw the league grow exponentially under her watch but also raised questions about her ability to lead it through its era of increased scrutiny and attention.
Engelbert has informed the league of her decision to retire, effective at the end of this year, it was announced today by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
"Cathy has presided over the WNBA through the most significant period of growth in the league's 30-year history," said Silver. "We are grateful for Cathy's leadership and unwavering commitment to the advancement of women's basketball."
Engelbert, 61, has served as WNBA commissioner since May 2019. Previously, she worked at Deloitte for more than 30 years and was elevated to CEO of the company in 2015.
"After more than seven years at the WNBA and more than 40 total years in business, I have made the decision to retire as WNBA Commissioner," said Engelbert. "In 2019, I had the privilege of being appointed the league's first commissioner and to lead a league with enormous potential yet untapped awareness and significant undervaluation. Over the years, it has been amazing to watch WNBA players thrive and lead the massive cultural surge around women's sports."

CLEVELAND (AP) — Gavin Williams struck out a career-high 13 and allowed just two singles in seven innings, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a 6-1 win on Tuesday night over the Toronto Blue Jays in a matchup of teams in the thick of the AL wild-card race.
Patrick Bailey, rookie Angel Genao and Angel Martinez all hit two-run homers for the Guardians, who are 11-4 since Aug. 12. Cleveland came in with a slim lead for the third wild-card spot.
Williams (13-7) began September by dominating the Blue Jays, allowing one unearned run. The right-hander, who was coming off a shaky outing last week, didn't give up a hit until the fourth.
Williams struck out the side in the seventh and fanned five of his last six. It was his 10th double-digit strikeout game this season.

The Kansas City Chiefs have disrupted Lane Kiffin's plans for LSU by claiming linebacker Jack Pyburn off NFL waivers. Pyburn had been discussed as a possible return to Baton Rouge after leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The 22-year-old linebacker posted four sacks during the Buccaneers' preseason but failed to secure a roster spot. Kansas City then claimed him Monday, ending LSU's hopes of adding the former Tiger.
Pyburn's situation became possible because of ongoing eligibility litigation in Louisiana. A temporary restraining order allowed players involved in the case to potentially return to college football.

Kyle Larson would like to see more changes to the NextGen car moving forward. The defending NASCAR Cup Series champion expressed enthusiasm about this Saturday's ****** e Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona, which will see a new rules package.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jackson Chourio went 4 for 5 with two homers, four RBIs and four runs to help Jacob Misiorowski and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the New York Mets 8-2 on Thursday night.
Misiorowski (14-5) overcame some command issues and reduced velocity — at least by his standards — to allow two hits and strike out six over six innings.
Both hits he gave up came in the fifth, when Jacob Young had an RBI double and Christopher Morel laced a run-scoring single.
Nine of Misiorowski's 95 pitchers were clocked at 100 mph, with none reaching 101 mph. He walked two batters for the second consecutive outing after issuing four walks in seven starts from July 2 through Aug. 15.
The 6-foot-7 right-hander appeared to have issues with his landing foot on the slippery Citi Field mound. Brewers manager Pat Murphy had a discussion with third base umpire and crew chief Vic Carapazza in the third, when Misiorowski fell behind 2-0 on Francisco Alvarez following a walk to Morel. The grounds crew spent a few minutes working on the mound before the bottom of the fourth.

Czechia continues to have a great summer as Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik win the 2026 US Open mixed doubles.
Muchova earns a long-awaited Grand Slam ****** le after two previous finals singles appearances at the 2023 French Open and last month's Wimbledon final where she lost a heartbreaker to compatriot Linda Noskova.
Mensik, whose biggest win to date was defeating Novak Djokovic at the 2025 Miami Open, looked like a natural doubles star. He has not played much doubles tennis in his young career. Mensik crowded the net and played great defensive tennis while delivering his trademark big serves.

Things have been tough at the major league level in the health department. Key players like Brent Rooker, Tyler Soderstrom, Nick Kurtz, Shea Langeliers and Jacob Wilson are all done for the year thanks to various injuries requiring surgery. Every team deals with big injuries but even that is a bad bill of health.
The injuries aren't just affecting the big league team either. Earlier this year one of the organization's top pitching prospects in Wei-En Lin had to undergo Tommy John surgery, ending his 2026 season prematurely and likely affecting next year's campaign as well. Considering he's still only 20 years old the lost couple of years shouldn't completely derail his career, but it's always a **** mer to lose multiple years of development while you're ascending the minor league ladder. The team also saw infielder Joshua Kuroda-Grauer go down with an unfortunate injury, but luckily that doesn't sound like it'll be a cause for concern long-term.
Those aren't the only notable injuries affecting the A's top prospects. We just learned yesterday that top prospect Leo De Vries, widely considered the top one or two prospects in the entire sport, it dealing with what sounds like a serious shoulder injury. Serious enough that he's shut down from throwing a baseball while he recovers down in Arizona:

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin, also known as "Scary Terry," could be a scary addition to your fantasy lineup this season. He has put up elite numbers over the course of his career, especially in 2024 when he had over 1,000 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. While McLaurin missed seven games last season, ESPN fantasy ****** yst Eric Moody believes he is a great fantasy option this season. Here is what Moody had to say about McLaurin:
"McLaurin is one of my favorite values at wide receiver. In 2024, he scored 13 touchdowns, finished as the WR7 and topped 1,000 yards for the fifth straight season. Last season was basically lost, with McLaurin missing seven games and QB Jayden Daniels missing 10. New OC David Blough has talked about getting McLaurin 10 targets per game, a significant jump from the 7.3 he has averaged over his career, while also moving him around the formation. New signing Stefon Diggs adds competition, but I'm getting a receiver who has already shown WR1 upside at a back-end WR2 price. That's a discount I'm willing to bet on."
Diggs may provide some competition, but he could actually help McLaurin's fantasy stock in a way. Without Diggs, McLaurin was the clear No. 1 receiver on Washington's roster, making him more likely to get double-teamed and have fewer fantasy points. With another elite wide receiver for defenses to worry about, this should lead to more opportunities for McLaurin.
As Moody notes, McLaurin has a current average draft position (ADP) of No. 23 wide receiver. Therefore, you do not have to spend a first or second round pick on him even though he has the potential of a WR1, allowing you to build up other positions on your roster.
The biggest concern with McLaurin is Daniels' health. Some may be worried about McLaurin's health given he missed seven games last season, but he is not injury-prone. In fact, last season was the first time McLaurin missed any time since 2020. Daniels, on the other hand, missed 10 games with three different injuries last season. If he goes down, McLaurin's fantasy production could suffer. But if Daniels is able to remain healthy as he did in 2024, McLaurin could have a monster fantasy season.

The Steelers' crowded house at quarterback may now have reason to become less crowded.
Will Howard, a sixth-round pick in 2025 who performed well in his NFL debut a week ago, threw two interceptions on Friday night in a 17-0 loss to the Jets.
For the night, Howard completed 10 of 15 passes for 74 yards in four drives. The two efforts that didn't end in turnovers were three-and-outs.
"I felt really comfortable in the pocket," Howard said after the game, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN. "I felt like I was going through my progressions well, especially early first and second down, and felt good about how I played, but those two turnovers will really, really make it sour."

First, defending in this way blocks the centre of the pitch making it difficult for opponents to find players through the middle. I'd say "stop me if you heard this one before," but you can't stop me, because I have a recap to write. The Braves fell behind early, and didn't hit any homers, losing a close-ish game on the margins to the Twins. When you don't hit homers, you need BABIP, and when you don't get BABIP, chances are you're going to lose. That's pretty much what happened on Monday night at Target Field.
This game was a weird one in many ways. After a 45-minute rain delay, the Braves grinded Bailey Ober for 26 pitches, but ultimately came up short. Both Drake Baldwin and Michael Harris II singled, but Mauricio Dubon fouled out weakly to right on the eighth pitch he saw from Ober. Then, the Twins pulled off some high-wire only-in-baseball garbage, aided by Martin Perez' inability to keep the ball in the zone. Look, I'll just post the snip from the Baseball Savant gamefeed:
Basically, a soft double, two walks, a bloop double that basically kissed the chalk that no one was able to run down, a very soft bloop, and then a perfectly-placed slow roller. Put that together, and it's four runs. Yeah, Perez shouldn't be walking two guys in an inning if he's not going to strike anyone out, but… help us out a bit, BABIP gods, eh?
They would not. The funny thing is, the Twins didn't manage to get much of anything going the rest of the way, but neither did the Braves. Perez basically cruised until the fourth, when the Twins managed two hard liners, but Ryan Jeffers had a weak flyout to strand them. Perez completed five innings with a 3/2 K/BB ratio — no walks after those two to the second and third batters he faced. Victor Mederos had a 1-2-3 sixth, and then Tyler Kinley came on (white flag?), hit a batter, walked another, and gave way to Ray Kerr, making his first MLB appearance since June 15, 2024. Kerr threw literally one pitch, a down-the-middle sinker to Kody Clemens, which turned into a groundout. For the eighth, the Braves left Kerr in the game, and somehow, the Twins loaded the bases with none out again (somehow equals a hit-by-pitch, a single, and a bunt that Kerr threw too high for Ozzie Albies to flag down at first and still touch the base). But, despite me looking very askance at the Braves for deciding to throw Kerr in for an up-down in a close game while still recovering from Tommy John Surgery, he somehow got out of it with no runs scoring, thanks to two pop-outs and a groundout.
That was the pitching slate for Atlanta; the hitting slate was a lot more frustrating. The Braves made Ober throw a ton of pitches, a la the first inning, but to little avail the first two times through the order. After that first inning, they got a leadoff single in the second and a two-out walk in the third, but didn't do anything with either. They finally broke through in the fifth: Austin Riley singled to start the frame, and Drake Baldwin pulled a double down the right-field line. Ronald Acuña Jr. got a fastball down the pipe on 2-1 at a sad 85.6 mph and yanked it down the left-fiel

Tommy John's name will live on in baseball forever, long after his excellent 26-year major league pitching career ended. John died on Saturday at age 83, and will be long remembered for being the first to undergo the surgery that bears his name.
John's baseball accolades on their own are mind-boggling. He played in 26 major league seasons, matched only in the modern era by Nolan Ryan, who pitched in 27 years. John is one of only eight pitchers to make 700 starts, and he pitched a whopping 4,710 1/3 innings in his major league career.
With the Dodgers, John led the National League in winning percentage in each of his first two seasons, including 13-3 for a pennant-winning team in 1974. But he didn't pitch that year after July 17, sidelined by an elbow injury. That September, Dr. Frank Jobe tried a new elbow reconstruction surgery, replacing the ulnar collateral ligament in John's left elbow.
"Tommy was an exceptional pitcher throughout his career in Major League Baseball, and his courageous role in becoming the first to have surgery that would go on to bear his name can't be overstated," Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten said. "His impact both on and off the field has been felt by ballplayers of all ages and will be for generations to come."
After the first such procedure that would ultimately bear his name, John rehabbed in 1975 but returned to make at least 30 starts for his next seven full seasons, a stretch interrupted only by a strike-shortened 1981 season in which he started 20 games and pitched 140 1/3 innings.

Newcastle United have reached an agreement with Benfica to sign Amar Dedic, per Sky Sports.
The deal is said to be worth £29.5 million, and Dedic is set to fly to the Tyneside club to undergo his medical on Monday.
The 23-year-old will likely be unveiled as a Newcastle player in time for their Premier League opener against Liverpool next Sunday.
New manager Matthias Jaissle knows Dedic well, having previously worked with him at Red Bull Salzburg.

There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the Cleveland Browns this offseason, from the quarterback battle to the Myles Garrett trade to the coaching search and so much more. Of all the conversations, one of the biggest ones was the rookie class that Andrew Berry put together during April's NFL Draft.
It was widely regarded as one of the best in the entire NFL as they addressed needs at several positions and found serious value all throughout the draft. It was all talk and conversation up until Saturday. Saturday in Chicago was the first time that the NFL community got the opportunity to see this class on the field, and they did not disappoint.
The Browns' first pick in the Draft was Spencer Fano. The tackle from Utah was one of the consensus top picks in the draft, and the Browns were able to acquire him after a trade down. Fano made his name at Utah by playing right tackle, and after being drafted, he was slated to flip over to the left side and become the future left tackle for the Browns. That's not an easy task, but he is up to the task.
Fano more than held his own on Saturday against the Bears, and one of the things that he excels at is meeting the point of attack with power but on balance. He is so fundamental in his approach, and it leads to many wins up front. It wasn't perfect, but it was good.
Just get the ball in this kid's hands and watch him go to work. His first touch as a Cleveland Brown was a punt return that he returned back 31 yards to set up the Browns' first scoring drive. He added several tough catches in traffic and ended his day with an end-around run for a touchdown. Buy all of the stock you possibly can on this young player.
