Huntington Bancshares Incorporated (NASDAQ:HBAN) dropped 5.55% to $15.82 on September 16, 2026, close to its 52-week low. The price movement was triggered by a profit warning at a Barclays conference. Huntington brought down its 2027 EPS guidance from above $1.90 to the range of $1.75-$1.83, and its 2026 net interest income growth from 39%-43% to roughly 35%. What matters more than these numbers is the reason behind them. Deposit costs are rising, and loan pricing is tightening, and it landed on the day the Fed delivered its first interest rate hike since 2023. The drop therefore raises the question: is this an oversold bank or the opening crack in regional-bank margins?
A well-run bank has just lowered its guidance, citing intense competition for deposits and loans. If Huntington feels the margin pressure, then it is likely that its peers feel the same. This explains why Fifth Third shares slid 4.1% on the same afternoon alongside the whole financials group. The Fed's new hike makes the environment more unfavorable for the group in the near term. While rate increases eventually lift ***** et yields, banks must immediately offer higher deposit yields to retain balances, squeezing net interest margins in the near term. Furthermore, accelerated commercial real estate loan payoffs reduced total earning ***** ets, though these early payoffs lower credit risk on the loan book.
The selloff leans too much into the reset. A move to $1.75-$1.83 from above $1.90 is a modest single-digit trim. Huntington sustains its profit as well as its operational performance. Loans reached $189 billion from $50 billion in 2015. Deposits touched $222 billion. And one of the company's biggest growth engines, value-added fee income, compounded at a 14% annual rate since mid-2024, with year-to-date growth near 32%. The income helps offset a notable portion of the spread pressure and offers a competitive edge against pure spread lenders.
A higher-for-longer rate environment carries trade-offs for commercial banks. It drives up deposit expenses, reflecting the margin pressure Huntington reported. It also expands loan yields as credit ***** ets reprice. Deposit beta determines the net effect by measuring how much of each benchmark rate increase the bank transfers to depositors. After the rate hikes, deposit costs typically rise further, so betting on a near-term peak takes some faith. A lower beta allows fee revenue to support earnings, whereas a higher beta keeps the squeeze sustained over multiple quarters.

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh has revealed himself. If not a card-carrying monetarist, he is at least a camp follower. This represents a dramatic change at the Fed, where the past Chairman Jerome Powell repeatedly rejected the basic tenets of monetarism.
This is a welcomed earthquake. After all, there are almost no monetarists left in the world (except for us, and we've been fighting a lonely rearguard action for over 40 years). The Federal Reserve has rejected monetarism consistently — and on the record — because it preferred other models for understanding the economy. In academia, monetarism has been out of fashion for decades. But by his own words, a monetarist is now leading the central bank.
Just what is monetarism? It's a doctrine which holds that money has a major influence on both the level of ***** et prices, economic activity, and the price level. Any discussion of national income determination must, therefore, center on the quantity of money and the banking system, since banks produce most of the money in modern economies. When it comes to monetary policy, its objectives are best met by targeting the rate of growth of the money supply.
Today, most economists pooh-pooh monetarism. Money and banking are nowhere to be found in their macroeconomic models, or their discourses about the course of ***** et prices, economic activity, and prices. Indeed, their forecasting exercises are typically based on elaborations of Keynesian income-expenditure models that exclude money and banking.
If that's not enough, we think that the Fed's backroom staff, mostly Keynesian-leaning Democrats, don't want alignment with a philosophy usually affiliated with Milton Friedman, but that's another story. Just look at what Joe Biden said in 2020 about how the dean of monetarism wasn't "running the show anymore."

Osaic has been hit with a class action suit claiming the firm put its own profits ahead of customers in how it has handled its various cash sweep programs.
In the suit filed in Arizona federal court, Osaic customers Robin Nackman and Douglas Whittaker accused Osaic of a "dramatic underpayment of interest" to their customers, violating their "contractual, implied and/or fiduciary obligations" to the plaintiffs.
"Despite its representation to the contrary, Osaic categorically has not adjusted interest rates paid to customers based on economic or prevailing market factors, but rather has kept the sweep rates artificially depressed as to reap substantial profits for itself," the complaint read.
In the complaint, Nackman and Whittaker argue that typically, uninvested cash from customer accounts is moved (or "swept") into interest-bearing accounts, generating client returns.

XRP shook off a sharp regulatory setback this week, climbing more than 7% over 24 hours to trade near $1.39 after briefly touching lows around $1.27.
The rebound followed a rocky 48 hours that combined a failed Senate vote with the Federal Reserve's first rate hike since 2023.
Cloture is the Senate procedure required to end debate and move a bill toward a final vote, needing 60 senators to succeed. On September 15, the CLARITY Act fell short in a narrow 50-49 tally, missing that threshold and stalling a proposed federal framework for digital **** ets.
XRP dropped more than 8% in the immediate aftermath, touching lows near $1.27 to $1.28. Pressure intensified the next day when the Fed raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%, a move that typically weighs on risk **** ets broadly.
The sell-off, however, proved short-lived. XRP has since rebounded to $1.39, up 7.23% over 24 hours, even as the token slipped slightly by 0.30% in the past hour. Trading volume held near $3.9 billion, close to its 30-day average, suggesting genuine buying rather than thin, low-liquidity trading.

Choosing the right mortgage lender could save you thousands of dollars. Shopping for one should be one the first steps you take when buying a house.
Comparing lenders and lining up preapprovals early gives you some benchmarks to work from, and when your real estate agent recommends lenders, you'll have a better sense of whether they're offering a good deal. Plus, having preapprovals in hand lets buyers and agents know you're serious.
Real estate agents typically have a roster of recommended lenders, often built on years of repeat business. "Choosing a lender is not just about obtaining financing," says Matthew Martinez, a California real estate broker. "It is about choosing one of the most important members of the transaction team."
Agents vet lenders to add to their networks, and they know what separates a good one from a bad one. Here are the four questions they say you should ask any lender you're considering.
A lender may offer a special program based on your profession, income or location that can make the mortgage more affordable.

Experienced investors know the advantages of buying and holding S&P 500 index funds like the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO) or the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEMKT: SPY). Not only are they super simple, but statistically speaking, you're likely to get better performance from them than you are by picking individual stocks or by owning an actively managed fund.
Nevertheless, given its long-term (and often market-beating) track record, even the most disciplined of investors might have the itch to step into a stake in Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA) (NYSE: BRKB). But is it actually the better buy?

Berkshire Hathaway is a conglomerate consisting of several dozen reliable cash-producing businesses as well as a portfolio of hand-picked stocks. Brought to prominence by Warren Buffett, the company's flexible structure has enabled its shares to consistently outperform the S&P 500 since Buffett first took the helm in 1965.
It hasn't beaten the market every year since then, to be clear. Some years it did. Other years it didn't. It typically achieved the feat in five-year time frames.

Nearly 10 years ago, Warren Buffett told Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA) (NYSE: BRKB) investors that he had made a mistake for not buying Google when he had the opportunity many years earlier. He had become quite familiar with the business because GEICO, Berkshire's consumer insurance company, was paying $10 or $11 per click for advertising on the search engine owned by Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL). At the 2017 shareholder meeting, Buffett said he'd missed the opportunity, but he wouldn't bet against Google.
The stock climbed significantly while Buffett sat on the sidelines. He finally pulled the trigger on the stock in the third quarter of last year. Since then, he and newly appointed CEO Greg Abel have plowed tens of billions into the stock, making it one of Berkshire's biggest investments. But Buffett arguably missed out on a 9,000% gain by not buying into the stock sooner.

It's hard to blame Buffett for not buying Alphabet, then known as Google, when it made its initial public offering (IPO) in 2004. Buffett historically avoids both IPO stocks and tech stocks.
Buffett thinks IPOs are typically overvalued, at least relative to many other stocks, because underwriters are incentivized to secure the highest possible price for the company issuing shares. An IPO like Google's also comes with a lot of hype and media attention that can drive prices higher without any fundamental basis.

Bonds should be an essential part of a well-balanced portfolio. Factual differences between the Schwab Long-Term U.S. Treasury ETF (NYSEMKT:SCHQ) and the State Street SPDR Portfolio Long Term Corporate Bond ETF (NYSEMKT:SPLB) center on credit quality, as the Schwab fund tracks government debt while the State Street fund targets investment-grade corporate bonds.
Investors seeking exposure to long-dated fixed income typically choose between government-backed securities and corporate credit. While both funds focus on maturities exceeding 10 years, they offer significantly different risk-reward profiles based on their underlying debt issuers and the credit risk investors are willing to accept for higher income.

Credit counseling sets you up with a debt management plan that consolidates your payments and may lower your interest rate or monthly payment, but it typically doesn't reduce how much debt you actually owe.
Debt settlement aims to negotiate down the amount you owe, but it carries more risk. Creditors may refuse to negotiate, you're often told to stop paying during negotiations (which can hurt your credit), and there's no guarantee of success.

Become a CEO after your MBA: that's the promise some private equity firms are using to recruit top operating talent.
This promise propels the best and brightest into top executive roles without requiring them to climb the corporate ladder, underpinned by the belief that cultivating talent is a better bet than making semi-blind bets on external hires.
Alpine Investors and Shore Capital Partners have each built separate pipelines to funnel operational talent, aiming to equip executives to take charge of their portfolio companies.
Lower-middle-market buyout firm Shore Capital Partners runs what it calls its CXO program, a two-year training scheme that places early- to mid-career talent and recent MBA grads into C-suite-adjacent roles at its portfolio companies—typically chief of staff or vice president of business operations or strategic initiatives.
Top-performing CXO graduates then have the chance to be promoted to C-level positions. So far, Shore has produced four CEOs from the CXO program. This includes Mark Larsen, who has been CEO of medical software business Connexure since 2024.

Mortgage rates continue to rise as 2026 nears its fourth quarter. What is the outlook for home loan rates in the next five years? Should you wait for mortgage rates to fall significantly before buying or refinancing? Mortgage interest rates are determined by several factors, all of which can give us clues about the future. Let's take a closer look at mortgage rate predictions over the next five years.
Here are the housing market predictions for 2026.
One of the most useful indicators for predicting mortgage rates is the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note. Mortgage rates and 10-year Treasury yields typically move in the same direction, although mortgage rates are usually higher because lenders factor in additional risks. This difference is known as the spread, and we'll account for it when estimating where mortgage rates could go.
With that in mind, the first step is to look at where economists believe Treasury yields are headed over the next five years. To build a forecast, we'll combine expert economic projections with data compiled using artificial intelligence.

The Federal Reserve influences consumer loan rates by setting the federal funds rate, which affects how much banks charge each other for overnight lending. That cost typically gets passed on to borrowers through higher or lower rates on personal, auto, and student loans.
By tracking the Fed's moves, you can get a better sense of whether taking out a loan will be more expensive or more affordable. It may even help you time your borrowing decisions so you can secure the best possible rate.
The Fed recently raised its rate by 25 basis points during its September 2026 meeting. See what impact that could have on your borrowing costs.
The Federal Reserve sets a target range for the federal funds rate, a benchmark rate that determines how much lenders charge one another for overnight lending. When the Fed increases this rate, lenders generally pass along the higher costs to consumers by raising interest rates on consumer loans and credit cards. Leasing a car requires less money upfront and has lower payments, but there are typically mileage restrictions and additional costs.
Buying can mean more expensive monthly payments and long-term maintenance costs, but you have greater control over its use and lower costs in the long run.
With leasing, you do not own the vehicle at the end of the lease term. Financing is more expensive in the short term, but you will own the vehicle once you've finished paying.
When you lease a car, you pay to use it and return it once the lease term is up. This often means lower monthly payments, but leasing can be more expensive than buying a car since you won't be able to sell your car or use it as a trade-in for your next purchase. Buying a car means owning it outright — once you've repaid your loan — and can drive it for years after your monthly payments finish.
If you're deciding between the two, balance your desire for top-of-the-line tech and a reasonable monthly payment against the long-term benefits of owning a car.

Step zero is comparing the stock's total returns to the S&P 500 over a range of different periods, starting from one month and extending to five years. Ideally, like both Apple and Costco, the company being evaluated will have outperformed the index over the last five years.

Ethereum's native token, Ether (ETH), is showing signs of underperformance against Bitcoin (BTC), with a bearish double-top setup emerging just as the US Senate's failure to advance the CLARITY Act adds fresh uncertainty to the crypto market.
Ether was trading near 0.03167 BTC on Sept. 16, after failing to sustain its latest advance against Bitcoin.
The ETH/BTC daily chart shows two comparable peaks near 0.03344 BTC, one formed in August and another in September. Together, they resemble a potential double top, a bearish reversal structure that typically develops when buyers repeatedly fail to push price through the same resistance area.
Its neckline sits around 0.03078 BTC, meaning ETH/BTC would need a decisive daily close below that level to validate the breakdown.
If that happens, subtracting the pattern's maximum height from the neckline produces a downside target near 0.0283 BTC. That would represent a decline of roughly 10% from current levels, signaling further Ethereum underperformance relative to Bitcoin.

Meta Platforms (META) stock is riding a near 20% rally this month with shares boosted by optimism about its Muse AI agent app and, more recently, custom chips. The next test for Meta's rally comes next week.
Meta is hosting its annual Connect developer conference starting Wednesday. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg typically uses the event to preview the company's slate of application updates and new hardware. Last year's event focused on Meta's Ray-Ban Display smart glasses.
But Meta has been plenty busy ahead of the big conference at its Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters. Its recent rally was kick-started by the release of its Muse AI agent application earlier this month. The application quickly climbed toward the top of the download charts.
Earlier this week, Meta launched a new subscription service called Meta One. Subscribers get access to bonus features across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, starting at $2.99 per month. Meta also detailed to Bloomberg how it plans to deploy custom AI computing chips in it data centers starting next year.
With all of that, BofA ****** yst Justin Post wondered what's left to excite investors next week.

A public company typically has limited control over third-party financial products that reference its shares, but Robinhood Markets, Inc. (NASDAQ:HOOD) and AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:AMC) are now testing that notion in public, in one of the year's most intense corporate spats. The debate revolves over stock tokens and has evolved from a heated social media post on September 3 to a live televised retort by September 9.
Robinhood Markets, Inc. (NASDAQ:HOOD) expanded its tokenized shares offering, which is issued through a unit named Robinhood ****** ets (Jersey) Limited and traded on Robinhood's proprietary blockchain, Robinhood Chain, to include over 190 public firms, including AMC, without the companies directly signing on. When AMC CEO Adam Aron discovered that his company was among them, he did not mince words. On September 3, Aron posted on X, calling the practice "contemptible, outrageous, disgusting, detestable, inexcusable, vile," questioning how it could possibly be legal, and stating that AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:AMC) had no relation to the tokens and did not condone them.
He stated that the company would retain independent securities counsel and vowed to take the matter to the SEC, characterizing Robinhood's tokens as an unregistered securities product that undermines the regular relationship between a public company and its shareholders.
The market reaction was fast and telling: AMC shares rose as much as 21% in overnight trading after the public dispute broke out.
Robinhood did not back down. In the days that followed, the company's chief legal officer, Dan Gallagher, a former SEC commissioner, mocked the tone of Aron's complaint on social media, saying Robinhood "know[s] a little something about the US securities laws," and inviting AMC's lawyers to contact them. CEO Vlad Tenev originally commented on X with a brief "What's the concern?" before making his first extensive, broadcast comments on the controversy in a CNBC "Squawk Box" interview on September 9.

Small modular reactors, or SMRs, are essentially miniature nuclear power plants. They can be built faster than larger conventional nuclear facilities. And while typically more expensive on a per-megawatt basis, upfront capital investment can also be much lower than that of traditional nuclear plants.
While the concept of SMRs has been around for decades, only two SMR systems have ever been commercialized -- one in Russia, the other in China. Both of those systems are relatively small in generating capacity.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
A new age for SMRs, however, is upon us. The AI industry needs more power quickly to support scaling trillions of dollars in data center infrastructure. Nuclear power can provide large amounts of stable baseload power with minimal refueling needs. And while SMRs are typically higher cost on a per-megawatt basis, the speed of construction of these smaller nuclear systems is highly attractive in today's environment.
The European Investment Bank -- the lending arm of the European Union -- is recognizing the potential of SMRs. On Sept. 4, the group announced a €40 million loan to Steady Energy, an SMR developer based in Finland. According to Reuters, "The loan is the first in a pipeline of SMR investments the EIB has planned."
