Manchester United face Atletico Madrid at the Strawberry Arena in Stockholm on Saturday afternoon in their third pre-season fixture of the summer.
Michael Carrick has resisted the temptation to rotate heavily between friendlies, preferring to give first-team players sustained minutes as the new season approaches. Saturday's match against Atletico represents by far the sternest test of United's preparations and an important benchmark for where the squad stands heading into August.
A long list of World Cup participants remain unavailable. Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martínez, Kobbie Mainoo, Matheus Cunha, Noussair Mazraoui and Marcus Rashford are all on extended post-tournament breaks and have not yet returned to Carrington.
Youri Tielemans completed his first training session at the club this week after arriving from Aston Villa in a £35m deal — but has been left out of the travelling squad for Stockholm. His debut will come in the coming days. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens is also not in the squad.
Benjamin Sesko is a major doubt with a shin injury that the club are carefully monitoring. Manuel Ugarte and Matthijs de Ligt are both sidelined with their own injury concerns and unavailable for selection. Amad Diallo has returned from his World Cup commitments with Ivory Coast and could feature in the squad.

Nottingham Forest have moved quickly in the market after the collapse of Inter Milan's deal for Anan Khalaili, with TeamTalk reporting that talks are already under way for the Union Saint-Gilloise wide player.
There is a clear opportunity here for Forest. Inter had appeared to be closing in on the 21-year-old after agreeing a package worth €30 million, £25.7m, made up of an initial €25 million, £21.5m, plus €5 million in add-ons. Khalaili had even completed the club's internal medical process. But the move was stopped at the mandatory cardiac screening stage in Italy, where the required certification was not granted.
That development has changed the landscape and Forest have reacted. TeamTalk state that an opening bid of €20 million, £17m, has already been rejected by Union SG, who remain hopeful of receiving a figure much nearer to the guaranteed sum Inter had lined up. Negotiations, though, are ongoing, and that is the significant point.
Khalaili is understood to appeal strongly because of his flexibility. He is comfortable at left-back, wing-back and in more advanced wide areas, which naturally increases his value to a head coach looking for options across several roles.
Forest are said to view him as someone who can strengthen multiple parts of Oliver Glasner's squad. In a market where adaptability often dictates recruitment decisions, that sort of profile is attractive. It also explains why several Premier League clubs had tracked him previously, including Aston Villa, Brighton, Everton and Leeds United.

Cole Palmer has joked he will send the bailiffs round to Morgan Rogers' house if his new Chelsea teammate uses his cold celebration.
Palmer and Rogers have reunited at Chelsea this summer, following the latter's £117m club record move from Aston Villa. The pair are close friends, having grown up together in the Manchester City academy, and will now share a dressing room again at Stamford Bridge.
Both players use the 'cold' shiver celebration when scoring, with Rogers first to use it before Palmer made it one of the most recognisable goal celebrations in thePremier League.
Palmertrademarked the celebration with the UK Intellectual Property Office last year, and joked Rogers will receive a knock on the door from bailiffs if he continues to use it.
"We've never spoke about it," Palmer said when discussing the shared celebration.

Michigan basketball is set to add another blueblood to its schedule.
The Wolverines are in the process of finalizing a two-year deal with Louisville, a program source with knowledge of the plans confirmed to the Free Press. The plan is to play in Detroit at Little Caesars Arena this season, with a "return" trip to be played next season in Indianapolis.
This season's game could potentially be played Dec. 5, though the teams are still finalizing the dates.
This appears to be an ACC replacement for a matchup with Duke in December. That game against the Blue Devils was nixed after being originally scheduled for New York then Miami.
It's yet another big-time name Michigan will play in a schedule that already includes an exhibition against Houston, and nonconference games against UConn (in a rematch of April's national championship game), Villanova and Marquette. That's in addition to the Wolverines' participation in the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas over Thanksgiving week; U-M's slate in that tourney features an opener vs. Creighton followed by a Day 2 matchup with either Miami (Florida) or TCU and a third game against Gonzaga, Kansas State, Baylor or Alabama.

Thirty-five years after Neil ****** moved from Scunthorpe United to Aston Villa, the club is still honouring part of the deal – in seats.
When Villa agreed a deal to sign defender ****** in 1991, they agreed a £400,000 fee and 2,000 seats for the Iron's ground at Glanford Park.
This summer, when Scunthorpe Stadium Manager Julie Taylor saw Villa revamping their North Stand and lower seating of the Trinity Stand, she asked whether any of the seats could be used to replace those at Glanford Park. Villa, a fellow team that plays in Claret and Blue, said yes.
"We weren't actually owed any, I was just a bit cheeky in asking if we could have some more!," Taylor told BBC West Midlands.
"Ours are broken and brittle after all these years, we could do with some more, so there was no harm in asking and that's what I did.

Newcastle United's search for wingers following Anthony Gordon's departure is reportedly taking the club to explore deals for former Premier League players, with an English forward emerging as a new potential target.
Although the Magpies have already strengthened multiple areas of Eddie Howe's squad this summer, including landing a left winger in Bazoumana Toure, Newcastle remains in the market for attacking reinforcements after Gordon's move to Barcelona.
According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle is monitoring Bologna winger Jonathan Rowe, although competition for the 23-year-old Norwich City academy product is growing.
The report claims Manchester United, Aston Villa, Everton and Chelsea have all shown interest in the former Premier League winger, with Newcastle already making preliminary checks over a potential move.
"TEAMtalk understands several Premier League clubs have been monitoring the 23-year-old throughout the summer, with Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle United all making enquiries into his situation over recent months," the report states.

According to a report from L'Équipe, Mamadou Sangaré (24) has left RC Lens's squad as he closes in on a move to Brentford FC.
The Mali international was with the Lens squad in Italy as they participated in the Como Cup, albeit he was not involved in the two matches on Tuesday. The midfielder, who arrived last summer on a €5m plus €3m in bonuses move from Austrian side Rapid Vienna, is set to break transfer records for both Lens and Brentford in a reported €48m transfer. He'll be Lens's biggest ever sale and Brentford's largest ever purchase.

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott is hopeful that the arrival of Andoni Iraola will help him secure a "second chance" at establishing himself within the squad, following a challenging loan spell last season.
The 23-year-old endured a difficult time at Aston Villa, where he featured in only nine games, totalling 277 minutes. His limited appearances were due to a specific clause in his loan agreement, which would have obligated Villa to sign him for £35 million had he made a tenth appearance.
Elliott returned to Liverpool's midfield for their 1-0 pre-season friendly victory over Wrexham in New York on Wednesday night. Despite ongoing speculation linking him with another move away, the player expressed his deep connection to the club.
"Everyone knows how much I love the club," Elliott stated after the match. "I've supported them from a very young age so the feeling never goes of putting the shirt back on and representing the club. It's a childhood dream. Every time I put the shirt on I want to give it 100 per cent."
Reflecting on his previous season, Elliott acknowledged the difficulties but is now focused on getting his career back on track.

SOFIA, July 29 (Reuters) - The remains of what is believed to be an ancient mammoth ‌have been revealed in northern Bulgaria, after Danube ‌River water levels receded to a record low level, the BTA news agency reported on Wednesday, citing historians.
The animal's remains were found on Wednesday by a local resident of the Ryahovo village, who noticed the unusual find ‌on the river bed. Villagers then alerted specialists in the Regional History Museum in the nearby town of Ruse.
Museum Director Nikolay Nenov told BTA that experts who were sent to the site recognised a lower jaw, two tusks and possibly a mammoth rib, and that ‌the bones will be removed for further examination on Thursday to establish with accuracy the origin and age of the find.
"I would not call it a sensation, but any discovery of such ancient remains is ‌very important for science," Nenov said, adding it has been long believed that the site was a swamp where the ‌animal probably died thousands of years ago.
Danube levels have fallen to record lows in recent weeks following the summer's prolonged heat waves and drought that have ‌affected rivers across Europe including key waterways such as the Rhine.

Japan's imperial family just returned to Tokyo after a few days at the Nasu Imperial Villa, one of the historic royal residences and a regular summer retreat. During one of their traditional outings, a visit to the area's popular animal park that the emperor and empress make almost every summer, one of the country's tabloids caught the photos everyone's now talking about. Princess Aiko, the only child of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, was joined by a childhood friend she's clearly at ease around.
Meet the mysterious "H," the young man who belongs to the imperial family's inner circle.
Princess Aiko's future remains uncertain: she may keep her imperial status after marriage, but she still has no path to the throne. (Anadolu via Getty Images)
The photos ran in the weekly magazine Josei Jishin, published by Kobunsha and aimed at "working single women." It occupies a unique spot in **** an's media landscape: while the mainstream press avoids any hint of speculation, repeating whatever line the Imperial Household Agency hands down, Jishin has built its reputation on digging up details that never make it into official channels. This is the same outlet that broke the story of Princess Mako's romance with Kei Komuro, and now it's running these photos of the emperor's only child without, deliberately, reading anything romantic into them.
The photos show Aiko and H chatting during a family outing, in a relaxed, protocol-free setting.

Chelsea has been busy this summer. The Stamford Bridge club has broken its transfer record to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa with Marco Palestra also joining from Atalanta and Geovany Quenda coming in from Sporting CP. Chelsea has clearly altered its strategy ahead of the 2026/27 season.
This is reflected by the Blues' interest in Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck, both of whom are reportedly close to joining the Stamford Bridge outfit. Henderson is 36 while Welbeck is 35. That Chelsea is even interested in such experienced players says a lot about how the strategy has changed over the summer.
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - JULY 28: Xabi Alonso, Manager of Chelsea, reacts during the Sydney Super Cup match between Western Sydney Wanderers and Chelsea FC at Accor Stadium on July 28, 2026 in Sydney, Australia. (Photo by Darren Walsh/Chelsea FC via Getty Images)
Xabi Alonso is remodelling the Chelsea team in his own image. The Spaniard is expected to recycle the approach and tactical set-up that worked so well for him as Bayer Leverkusen manager, hence the addition of a second number 10 in Rogers and a right wing back in Palestra. There is a plan in place.

Aston Villa are still awaiting the outcome of their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) as they try to register Brian Madjo, who joined from Metz for £10m in January and does not turn 18 until January next year.
Under-18s cannot complete international transfers, but Villa have argued Madjo was born in London and should be exempt, despite having three caps for Luxembourg.
Fifa does allow some exemptions for minor players to make moves, including if a 16 or 17-year-old transfers within the European Union - something the UK is no longer part of.
At 6ft 4in, Madjo has already been compared to Belgium's Romelu Lukaku and his leveller against Real Sociedad to make it 2-2 after 56 minutes was simple enough but showed a predatory instinct.
He was a handful for Real, with strength and power unsettling the visiting defenders and, with Ollie Watkins still on a break following England's World Cup campaign and Tammy Abraham returning from a shoulder issue, Madjo has the chance to impress.

Fiorentina have made an approach for Jadon Sancho following his Manchester United exit. The 26-year-old winger was on loan at Aston Villa last season, yet despite being part of the Europa League-winning squad, he couldn't convince United to offer a new deal.
Now, a shock offer seems to be on its way to the free agent, as Fiorentina are keen to table a three-year deal. La Viola's sporting director Fabio Paratici has allegedly been a Sancho admirer for a while, yet the terms on offer will certainly have to be lower than the €10 million net total the former England international earned until last season.
Sancho hasn't yet given a response, but his team will be ready to resolve any concerns in the coming hours. Last year, he turned down a move to Roma, as Gian Piero Gasperini expressly asked Frederic Massara for him. While he chose to stay in the Premier League for the remainder of that term, it now looks like he'll leave England.
Jadon Sancho has been something of a frustrating figure for English football. His rising status took him from the academies of Watford and Manchester City, before he became a poster boy for a British generation trying their hand abroad.
Moving to Borussia Dortmund at the age of 18 in August 2017, Sancho hit the ground running the following season. Flare-filled performances and a plethora of eye-catching goals saw the young Englishman go on to amass 50 all-competition goals in 137 appearances in yellow and black.

Bayern Munich proved to be ahead of the curve with the signing of Moroccan star Ismael Saibari. However, his injury in the game against Canada in the round of 16 ended his run at the World Cup. Now, after examination by Bayern's medical team, the versatile forward is set to join his teammates in the second week of August after they return from their Audi Summer tour.
Per a report by Kicker's Frank Linkesch, Saibari's injury has been inspected by the Bayern medical team in Munich. The diagnosis has revealed a torn muscle fiber in his thigh. The 25-year-old will be missing on the annual Audi Summer tour. The tour will be back in Asia from the 1st to the 8th of August, in the cities of Jeju, South Korea and Hong Kong. Die Roten will be facing Jeju SK FC and the Premier League's Aston Villa respectively.
With Saibari out for another 10 days, returnee Arijon Ibrahimović is likely to get game time in the upcoming friendly fixtures. More players are expected to return from the injury wing for Bayern including Serge Gnabry, Lennart Karl and Alphonso Davies. With the new signings, the club have beefed up a slim but high quality attacking roster to better cope with the gameload.

This season will see a new version of Aston Villa under Unai Emery.
A 4-2 defeat to Real Sociedad on Tuesday will irritate their perfectionist head coach, but there is plenty of time for him to fine-tune the Europa League holders before the start of the new campaign.
With Brian Madjo, George Hemmings, Modou Cisse all likely to feature in the squad going forward there was still plenty to build on from the encounter against the La Liga side.
The display of teenage striker Madjo was one.

Newcastle United have walked out of the race to sign Toulouse left-back Dayann Methalie (20) with their Premier League rivals Sunderland AFC now the clear favourites to sign the France U21 international, according to The Guardian. The Black Cats, who are set to compete in the UEFA Europa League next season, have already secured an agreement on personal terms with Methalie over a five-year contract, as reported yesterday by RMC.
The 20-year-old is billed as one of the best French prospects in the left-back role, with a senior France bow expected in a few years with Lucas Digne and Théo Hernandez entering the twilight of their career. Methalie has been extensively scouted by Eddie Howe's Magpies, but the latter have opted against submitting a bid this summer. Aston Villa also enquired about the Toulouse left-back.

Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen (24) could be on his way to join BlueCo-owned Ligue 1 side RC Strasbourg, as reported by Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace. The Denmark international could be the third Chelsea goalkeeper to join the Alsatians in three seasons, following in the footsteps of Djordje Petrovic and Mike Penders. The outlet understands that Jörgensen is expected to link up with Strasbourg in the next hours after initial talks with Strasbourg head coach Hugo Oliveira.
Oliveira, a former goalkeeping coach turned manager, emphasised the importance of a goalkeeper being heavily involved in build-up play. Jörgensen joined Chelsea from Villarreal two years ago. Those last campaigns, he was mainly Robert Sanchez's understudy at Stamford Bridge. The Sweden-born Denmark international featured 36 times for Chelsea in all competitions.
Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace understands that a loan move is in the works, but no agreement has been reached yet.
