Sep. 14—It was an extraordinary football weekend that saw the two Big Ten favorites, Ohio State and Oregon, join the Illini in stunning disappointments. What follows are four burning takes from Saturday's scramble.

Conclusion: It's equal proportions of both as the Illini permitted 43 first downs in two outings.
In the opener against UAB, the defense permitted 17 rushes of five yards or more, and gave up 194 ground yards while managing one sack. The Illini won with four huge plays, including a 65-yard punt return and a Hail Mary, avoiding early trouble because four UAB drives were chilled by Blazer penalties. Illinois tackling was already a major concern.

Coming into the season, everyone thought the NFC West would be a dogfight. With the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams, the division features the defending Super Bowl champions and the current favorites to win it all. The San Francisco 49ers are also legitimate contenders, especially after dominating the Rams in Week 1.
What few people expected was the Rams being in last place after the first week of the season. With their 27-7 loss to the 49ers, paired with wins by the Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals, the Rams are the only winless team in the division.

College football is unpredictable and delightful, which is why we live for what happens on Saturdays. And Week 2 absolutely delivered, from a stunner in Stillwater to an instant classic in Austin.
Each Sunday, I'll publish my biggest takeaways from the college football weekend. I'll highlight the most interesting storylines, track College Football Playoff contenders and specifically shout out individual and team performances that deserve the spotlight.
He beat one of college football's bluest bluebloods. I know he took the Longhorns to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff in back-to-back seasons, but we live in a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately world. And lately, Texas had been overhyped and under-delivering — with three losses to Georgia since joining the SEC, and two losses to Ohio State (in the CFP and last year's season-opener). After starting last year as the preseason No. 1 team, Texas didn't even make the CFP.
But Saturday was different, even after a first half that felt all too familiar. Arch Manning delivered with the game on the line. Hollywood Smothers showed the value of adding the transfer portal's best available running back. And Sarkisian got the kind of win that helps a head coach sleep at night. Whitworth acknowledged what could have been in the 2025 Super Bowl, while looking forward to Denver's 2026 season, especially against the Seattle Seahawks, a game which Whitworth will attend as part of the TNF crew.

It's not just their playing staff what have changed either with a decent chunk of the Reds' backroom staff also being re-jigged.
Richard Hughes is now Al-Hilal's sporting director and Michael Edwards just decided to quit after Fenway Sports Group's multi-club model was thrown in the bin.
Even though all these changes have been made, it still feels like more needs to be done before Liverpool are ready to be seen as genuine contenders for the Premier League ******* le again.

Few teams are taking risks this season, at least in their season opener, in order to avoid putting an L on their resume for the CFP committee later in the year. As a result, it's difficult to find many games with single-digit spreads. Nonetheless, there should be some entertaining games and we'll learn a lot some of the relative strengths and weaknesses of the contenders.

The Trojans are one of the few teams in this article who have actually taken the field already in 2026. Jayden Maiava beautifully orchestrated Lincoln Riley's offense to a 35-3 lead before taking their foot off the gas against San Jose St. Matt Entz will debut as Fresno's new HC. For what it's worth, the former North Dakota St. HC was my least favorite Bison coach of the National Championship era, so I'm not sold that he'll be the long-term answer for the Bulldogs.
