Today, it's following the end of five straight series wins.
But that's okay. Listen, if you were thinking that the Royals could make the playoffs during this stretch of great baseball that began when they were 24 games under .500, I applaud you. I wish I could've had that kind of hope.
Still, we've seen this team's best action the past couple of weeks. Even having dropped two in a row to the Fish, I'm looking forward to watching Michael Wacha take the mound tonight on the heels of his gem against Cleveland on August 28th.

Coming into the season, Austin Wells had a .224 career batting average and a .717 OPS. He had never been an elite producer at the plate, but posted 20 homers last season and was good enough for the Yankees to stick with him.
However, he was having an awful season through June. In his first 56 games, he had a .155/.255/.238 slash line and just four home runs. The Yankees reportedly tried trading for a catcher, but were unable to land one. Wells has lost at-bats and starts to Ali Sánchez lately, but he has turned his awful season around.
Since July 1, Wells is slashing .238/.314/.426. He has a .740 OPS and six home runs. He is never going to be a guy who hits for a high average, but his .740 OPS is a big boost for the Yankees. He is producing for an offense that is without Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, and his contributions are not going unnoticed. On Wednesday night, he gave the Yankees the lead in extra innings with a two-out, two-RBI single.
"You feel like he's that threat again down there. That's massive," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, per The Athletic's Chris Kirschner.

The Southeastern Conference has been a perennial college football powerhouse for the last few decades, but lately, there has been a lull in the league's dominance, having now gone three straight seasons without a team being crowned with a national ****** le.
Despite the recent championship doldrums, the SEC remains a powerhouse on the collegiate gridiron with nine member schools cracking the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll. Having expanded its intraconference schedule to nine games, the league slate is a veritable gauntlet that provides a superlative level of competition that can only be matched by the Big Ten.
Ahead of the 2026 campaign, The Athletic's Dan Santaromita and Austin Mock put together their SEC odds, win totals and projections for this fall based on the latter's simulation model. The results have the Georgia Bulldogs leading the way when it comes to expected wins (9.6), as well as their chances for a College Football Playoff appearance (65.1%) and a conference championship (28.3%).
The Florida Gators landed in the lower third of the pack, with an expected win total of 6.5 along with an 11% chance of making their first CFP appearance and a 2.2% chance of winning the SEC ****** le. That ranks the Orange and Blue at No. 11, between the South Carolina Gamecocks and Missouri Tigers.

Making his big-league debut tonight, "Big Laz" had an appropriately splashy welcome to the big leagues that will guarantee his megawatt smile will light up highlight reels tonight both in Seattle and beyond, accounting for two of the Mariners' nine runs tonight. But Randy Arozarena also continued doing what he's done all season, leading the team offensively and providing an early separating blow that helped the Mariners outlast the Red Sox in a grueling 9-6 win at Fenway.

Unfortunately, the Red Sox took that run right back with a blast of their own, a four-seamer from Bryan Woo that didn't quite get top rail enough that Mickey Gasper hammered for a matching blow.
But the Mariners offense picked up their starter in the top of the second, pouncing on Paez for five runs of both the small and large ball variety. Josh Naylor got things going with a leadoff double, followed by a line-drive single from Cole Young – not super hard hit, but any contact in the air is good from young Cole, who's been really struggling lately with pounding the ball into the ground. That brought up Lazaro Montes for his very first big-league at-bat in an RBI situation. Facing a flagging pitcher on a bullpen day, Montes took a studied, disciplined at-bat, getting ahead 2-0, whiffing at a changeup on the plate, and then declining to chase two more changeups to earn his way on base. J.P. Crawford put the Mariners ahead on a sacrifice fly, and then Brock Rodden checked in with an infield hit of his own, hustling down the line to allow Cole Young to score. That also turned the lineup over for Randy Arozarena, who continued his audition to Get Real Paid by the Red Sox next season by crushing a sinker middle-middle that would have wound up on Lansdowne Street if not for an inconveniently located billboard.

Fans of the franchise have been mired in controversy lately. Between the queens fighting it out over Onya Nurve's comments on the Minoritea Report podcast, where she said her castmates couldn't relate to her because they didn't win and she did, and Art Simone begging fans to stop sending her hateful messages, it seems like the Drag Race drama never ends.

On August 20, Hovnanian Enterprises (NYSE:HOV) reported third-quarter results that told two different stories at once. Revenue fell to $705.7 million from $800.6 million a year earlier, and the company posted a net loss of $0.70 per diluted share. Yet backlog value rose 5.1% year over year to $881.9 million, and management pointed to record land efficiency and a widening margin trend as evidence the business is being rebuilt for a different market. The gap between the near-term numbers and the longer-term setup is where this story gets interesting.
Hovnanian's adjusted homebuilding gross margin climbed to 14.6% in the quarter, up from a first-quarter trough, and management guided to 15% to 16.5% in the fourth quarter as newer, more recently underwritten communities make up a larger share of deliveries. Those communities were priced with today's higher incentive environment already built in, rather than ***** umptions from years ago when incentives were lower. The company's land position backs up that shift: 87% of controlled lots are now optioned rather than owned, the highest share in company history, up from 46% a decade earlier, freeing up capital and letting Hovnanian walk away from deals that no longer pencil out.
Total liquidity stood at $379.8 million, well above the company's own target range of $170 million to $245 million, while quick move-in inventory dropped 19.3% year over year to 820 homes as production was matched to actual sales pace. Contracts per community came in at 9.4, which management says ranks third among peers reporting similar periods. Demand also firmed lately: website traffic in July 2026 hit its highest level for that month since 2019, and month-to-date contracts in August ran 3% ahead of last year. To capture more of that traffic, Hovnanian hired active adult lifestyle veteran Deborah Blake to sharpen its Four Seasons brand as it pushes further into move-up and active adult buyers.
The quarter's headline numbers were rougher than the backlog alone suggests. Revenue fell from $800.6 million to $705.7 million, and Hovnanian swung to an adjusted pretax loss of $2.3 million, driven largely by delayed deliveries at newer joint venture projects that pulled unconsolidated joint venture income below expectations. That shortfall also broke a long streak: it was the first time in 23 quarters that adjusted pretax income landed below the company's own guidance range. Consolidated domestic contracts slipped 4.6% year over year to 1,155 homes, which management attributed to political and financial volatility keeping potential buyers on the sidelines.

Lionel Messi is still not slowing down anytime soon. The Argentine legend bagged a hat-trick against CF Montréal this evening as the Herons thrashed the Canadian side.
Initially it appeared the forward had scored four to finish the night, but after the match one of his goals was adjusted to an own-goal by Montréal. A stunning performance nonetheless.
Miami had been in a slump lately, but with new head coach Kily Gonzalez in the door this week, they made a statement with the thrashing of Montréal on home soil.
Messi was the star man, as usual, scoring three goals in the process, including two ridiculous finishes.
The first came from a vintage mazy run in the box before sliding the ball home.

Happy Saturday, folks! Hope you're having a nice weekend. If you decide to spend it watching late-night West Coast baseball, I hope the Orioles grace you with a series win tonight. They ******* ed a win in Game One last night with a 4-3 victory in ten innings. Although Brandon Young pitched a strong seven innings, the bullpen couldn't hold onto a meager 2-0 lead, and it took extras to sort things out: two clutch base hits by Coby Mayo and Christian Encarnacion-Strand gave the birds the winning margin of victory.
Let's hope the Orioles make Game Two worth staying up for. Tonight, taking the mound at Sacramento's Sutter Health Park for the Athletics is Jack Perkins, a 26-year-old righty who debuted for the A's in 2025, and has been used mostly as a swingman. In 11 starts and 20 relief appearances in 2026, he has an ugly 6.68 ERA, although it seems he's been the victim of bad defense, to judge by his FIP (4.79) and xERA (3.96). He's still been much more effective as a reliever, going by his ERA splits (4.76 ERA in relief/8.17 ERA as a starter). His best pitch is the sweeper, which generates a 36.1% whiff rate, followed by a decent changeup and cutter. The soft spot in Perkins' ******* nal is his mid-90s four-seamer: it's been his most hittable pitch by far (.318 average, .664 slugging against, Run Value -14), and he still throws it nearly a third of the time. Perkins is also ******* e to the long ball (1.69 HR/9) and to putting runners on via the walk (3.79 BB/9) or hit-by-pitch (9 on the year).
As for the O's starter, I don't know if it's crazy or reasonable to hope for a win, given that it's unlucky Shane Baz who takes his turn on the mound tonight. Despite the fact that Baz (4.04 ERA, 3.34 FIP) has allowed three or fewer runs in 19 of his 26 starts, he doesn't have a win in his last twelve starts (which is incredible to process). And he's been pretty good! He had a 3.68 ERA in June, a 3.00 one in July, and August, while slightly worse, shows him at a 4.30 mark. Poor Baz. Can the schneid please end tonight?
Tonight's lineup features a surplus of lefties. Jackson Holliday back in the leadoff spot, and Henderson, hopefully rested after his day off, hitting third. Dylan Beavers, hot lately, is back in, and so is Cowser playing center field. The newly activated Blaze Alexander is sitting today. However, Coby Mayo, slayer of lefties, is getting a start against the right-handed Perkins anyway, hitting seventh. And Pete Alonso, lately called our team's "iron man," is still out there, hitting, even with a sore calf.
Last night saw these Orioles ******* a game back from Cleveland's lead to put them just two games back of the third and final Wild Card spot. Earlier today, the lowly Royals did the Orioles a huge favor, pummeling the Guardians 8-3, which gives the team chance to make up yet another game! The next four games against the A's and the Rockies, whom the O's visit next, represent a best chance to make score some easy wins in the wild card race

As much as a stress-free night would be nice, the longtime Tigers coach understands his team won't win many games by four or five touchdowns. The alternative, a grind-it-out style, has proven fruitful lately. And that style may be exactly how Harris and the rest of the program drew it up.
Martin County relied on a hard-nosed running game and a punishing defense to outlast Santaluces 21-16 on Friday, Aug. 28, at Napoli Orthodontics Stadium. Two of the Tigers' three trips to the end zone came courtesy of the defense.

NEW YORK — Defense is supposed to be George Lombard Jr.'s superpower, but the Yankees rookie is in the midst of a serious fielding slump.
The shortstop now has six errors in six consecutive games after booting a ground ball in Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Astros. The bizarre streak continued on a bizarre play in the eighth inning, as Lombard, on the run, bounced the ball to and nearly collided with third baseman José Caballero, who then committed an error of his own when he airmailed a throw to first.
While it was Caballero's throw that allowed a run to score, it was Lombard's half of the play that drew attention after yet another mishap. Afterward, the frustrated 21-year-old acknowledged that he needs to "clean up" his defense, especially with the Yankees trying to catch the Rays for the division lead and fend off the incoming Red Sox for the American League's top Wild Card spot.
"I don't know. It's something you're trying to figure out," Lombard, who made just one error in his first 14 MLB games, said when asked why he's had such a tough time in the field lately. "Obviously, it's not acceptable. Can't happen at this level. If you make your pitchers have to get extra outs, it just makes it way harder on us."
Meanwhile, Aaron Boone said, "I don't think so" when asked if Lombard, who has played everyday since debuting on Aug. 4, could benefit from a day off. Instead, the manager said that he has "total confidence" that Lombard will put this unusual stretch "in the rearview mirror."

Eleven months ago, Schlittler entered pinstriped lore by blanking Boston over eight scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts, advancing the Yankees to the AL Division Series in a wild card elimination game.
On Friday night, Schlittler (11-6, 2.16 ERA) gets the ball to open an important, four-game series at Yankee Stadium against the rival Red Sox, the team he grew up rooting for in Walpole, Mass.
He'll be opposed by Patrick Sandoval (1-2, 4.54), as the Yankees are due to face a spate of lefties after a long run against right-handed starters.
It'll be interesting to see how Yanks manager Aaron Boone plays it this weekend, with a hot-hitting lefty in Luis Garcia Jr., and with lefty-hitting second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. lately picking up steam.

Investors poured more than $56 billion into US-listed ETFs during the week ending Aug. 21, lifting year-to-date inflows past $1.3 trillion.

US equity ETFs took in about half the total at $25 billion. US fixed income added $12.5 billion, international equity funds gathered $5.6 billion, and international fixed income took in $2.5 billion.

Commodity ETFs were the notable standout, pulling in almost $5 billion, while currency funds at $2.2 billion and alternatives at $2.8 billion also had strong weeks.

The S&P 500 slipped a little over 1% last week, pulling back from the record highs it had set the week before. Bonds stayed under pressure even after the Treasury Department moved to support the market, announcing it would double the size of its long-dated debt buybacks.

Yields fell briefly on the news but quickly reversed, leaving the 30-year Treasury yield not far from the 19-year high above 5.3% it reached on Aug. 17.

The Treasury's attempts to keep long-term yields down revived the so-called debasement trade. The SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) took in $3.4 billion and the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) added more than $1 billion as both gold and bitcoin spiked. Gold is now back in the green, up around 8% on the year after spending much of the summer underwater. IBIT remains down about 10% in 2026, though that is a marked improvement from the 33% loss it was nursing at its worst point in June.

On the other side of the ledger, the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) led outflows, shedding $1.7 billion. Semiconductor stocks have been treading water lately, chopping up and down after starting the third quarter under pressure.

The broader AI trade remains intact, but it has grown increasingly volatile as investors go back and forth over whether the rally is sustainable and whether the group has already peaked.

Last night, the Athletics fell to 19-39 at Sutter Health Park after dropping the series-opener against the Minnesota Twins, 9-6. Starter Jeffrey Springs struggled once again, and the offense's last-ditch rally came a few runs short. Tonight presents an opportunity for the last-place A's to earn their 20th home win and force a rubber match tomorrow.
Rookie left-hander Gage Jump will be on the ***** p this evening for the home team. The 23-year-old enters his 17th start of the season with a 5-8 record, a 4.83 ERA, a 1.51 WHIP and 88 strikeouts over 82 innings. Jump has endured some turbulence lately, going 2-4 with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP over his past seven starts. In his most recent outing against the Kansas City Royals, Jump took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits over four innings.
This evening, the A's would greatly appreciate a quality start from Jump in his first career appearance against the Twins. Through his first several MLB starts, Jump has alternated between stellar outings that have the team envisioning a future with him near the top of the rotation and poor performances that highlight the youngster's areas for growth as he adjusts to major league hitters. It would be beneficial for Jump to finish the season strong, although the team must be mindful of his workload to avoid increasing the southpaw's injury risk.

From the jump, this lineup sets the A's up well defensively. Tommy White is a better fit at first base, as last night's bunt debacle showed he is a bit stretched at the other infield corner.

A blowout loss is a tough way to start a series at home in a playoff race, but the South Siders hope to flush Monday's game and come out strong behind Anthony Kay today. After defeating the Sox yesterday, the Rangers now hold a half-game lead over the Houston Astros in the AL West, while Chicago's lead in the AL Central has shrunk to just 2 1/2 games over the Cleveland Guardians. The Guardians have rebounded from their rough stretch, winning seven of their last 10 and riding a five-game winning streak after defeating the Los Angeles Angels yesterday. The Angels, of course, had opportunities to come back but naturally didn't.
The South Siders are 5-5 in their last 10, and the offense has been struggling as a whole lately, basically living and dying by the long ball as we've seen in the last several games. In August, the White Sox are hitting just .208 with runners in scoring position as a team — the second-worst average in baseball over that stretch — while also racking up the most strikeouts (70). It also probably doesn't help that both Colson Montgomery and Munetaka Murakami are building Strikeout City from the ground up, with Colson leading MLB in Ks over the last two weeks (24 in 51 ABs) and Mune's 21 ranking third in baseball. Woof.
With both the rotation and bullpen continuing to struggle, the pitching staff took another hit when the White Sox announced that Huascar Brazobán is headed to the IL with a left lat strain. Righthander Jonathan Cannon is being called up from Triple-A Charlotte to help fill the hole. Jonathan Cannon is most certainly not the answer, but at this point, the front office seems ready to try anything.
The only other roster update for today is that our sweet (mostly) clutch Andrew Benintendi has been placed on the bereavement list, and Rikuu Nishida will rejoin the team in his absence. We send our thoughts to Andrew and his family during this time.
Regardless of what the masses may think, lefthander Anthony Kay has been solid for the Good Guys and is probably the second-best starter they currently have behind Sean Burke. Kay will make his 25th start of the season and has a 3.96 ERA and a 1.327 WHIP over 127 1/3 innings. He seems to keep improving, and in August alone, Kay has allowed just seven earned runs over 23 2/3 innings (four starts), good for a cool 2.66 ERA and a 2-1 record. If you ask me, his great outing against the Atlanta Braves last week went unrewarded because the offense was nowhere to be found.

The country star is guest hosting "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" for the week, his second time stepping in for the comedian and taking on the role of political commentator.
The "I Need a Favor" singer covered the president attending the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, though "sadly, those are the only laps Trump's been doing lately," he quipped.
"According to the Washington Post, a lot of doctors are worried about the president's weight," the singer, 41, said on the Aug. 24 episode. "After his last physical, we found out Trump gained 14 pounds, which means he's now tipping the scales at almost 240. It's crazy."
As for himself, he recently hit a new weight loss milestone.

Tesla's second-quarter results showed revenue of around $27 billion, with automotive sales up about 23% year over year, yet the operating margin compressed to near 1%, and profit missed expectations after a stretch of price cuts and heavy spending.
Free cash flow even flipped negative as capital expenditures (capex) more than doubled sequentially, with guidance calling for more than $25 billion of capex for the year. On the surface, that looks like a company working harder for less earnings, which is why the stock has felt stuck.

Barcelona are gearing up for an important week ahead, as the club race against time to sign a new striker.
Their pursuit of top target Julian Alvarez hasn't amounted to anything, which has led the club to consider potential alternatives, in their quest to sign a new number nine this summer.
While the likes of Lautaro Martinez, Viktor Gyokeres and Luis Suarez have been linked with a move to Barcelona lately, the club are also interested in a relatively less popular Nicolo Tresoldi.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart has always seen the WNBA as an inclusive place that has served as a safe ******* e for both its fans and the players. That's been challenged lately.
The WNBA has been the subject of recent debates on whether transgender women — people ******* igned male at birth who transition to align with their gender identity — should be allowed to participate in the league. There has never been such a player in the WNBA. Although the league's collective bargaining agreement says the WNBA is restricted to women, it contains no more specific language about gender identity or ******* ******* igned at birth.
There have been small rallies and protests outside Indiana Fever games after the issue came to a head when Sophie Cunningham of the Fever said in an ESPN profile published last month that she was opposed to transgender girls and women competing in girls' and women's sports. There are rallies planned before the Liberty face the Fever on Saturday night in Brooklyn.
"Knowing that rallies are happening on both sides shows the platform that the W has and the stunts for attention are just continuing to try and ride the wave that we have," Stewart told a small group of reporters Saturday morning. "I want Liberty fans and even Indy fans that are going to come here tonight to be able to have this arena be a safe ******* e."
At least three fans were asked by WNBA security personnel to cover shirts that had messages about transgender women participating in women's sports during last Sunday's game at Atlanta between the Dream and the Fever. The league later said the fans should have been free to wear those shirts.

Fresno State athletic director Garrett Klassy has signed a new five-year deal to stay with the Bulldogs, ESPN's Pete Thamel reports.
According to ESPN sources, Klassy's extension guarantees him a total salary of $2.9 million, which is among the largest guaranteed deals for an athletic director outside the Power Four conferences.
Klassy, who joined the Bulldogs in 2024, has led the school's move to the PAC-12, the hiring of head football coach Matt Entz and, lately, the historic sponsorship deal with The Wonderful Company.
Before Fresno State, Klassy was the Deputy Athletic Director at the University of Houston. As well as prior stints at the University of Nebraska, University of Oregon and University of Alabama.

Roberto De Zerbi held his first press conference ahead of Saturday's Premier League opening match at Brentford. While the press conference was overshadowed slightly by the fresh news that an agreement has been reached with Manchester City for the purchase of Savinho, there was still plenty to talk about in the match.
For starters, as mentioned previously RDZ named the new Tottenham Hotspur leadership group, which includes Micky van de Ven as club captain, along with Pedro Porro, Ben Davies, James Maddison, and Archie Gray as vice captains. But two of that group will not feature tomorrow vs. Brentford — Micky and Porro were both ruled out of contention, as was Pape Matar Sarr.
"Micky is not on the list tomorrow like Pedro Porro. James Maddison is inside [it], Solanke inside, Udogie, Fernandes also. Sarr not because he felt some pain, but nothing big. Kudus is almost ready.
"Today [Micky] worked with us, with the group and he is going very well. He suffered a problem during the pre-season of Australia, I don't know if it was the flight, but not a big problem. We have Senesi, we have Ben Davies and in the right condition to play the game tomorrow."
A lot to unpack there! Spurs have been strangely silent on Micky's absence from preseason, and we all **** umed it was injury related. De Zerbi didn't provide much of an update, but Micky's been in the club socials a LOT lately, and was just named Captain so if there was a major issue we'd probably know about it by now. Sounds like he'll be coming back sooner rather than later. Pedro Porro's absence is likely just fitness related; he only just returned from his post-World Cup break. Sounds like Sarr is just out with a minor knock and the club is being cautious.

NBC Sports host Maria Taylor's chemistry with WNBA icons-turned-analysts Cheryl Miller and Sue Bird has been on full display lately, including this outrageously funny TikTok. Enter: Tina Charles.
On Thursday, NBC Sports announced Charles is joining its WNBA studio team of Bird, Miller, Taylor, and LaChina Robinson. NBC Sports listed Charles as "a feature contributor."
Charles retired from the WNBA in May after an all-time great, 14-year WNBA career. The Connecticut Sun selected her No. 1 out of UConn in the 2010 WNBA Draft, and she won WNBA Rookie of the Year before winning WNBA MVP in 2012. The eight-time All-Star center made "The W25" as one of the 25 most significant players in the WNBA's first 25 years.
"Growing up, I watched the NBA on NBC, so joining NBC Sports is truly a full-circle moment for me," Charles said in a statement. "It's even more meaningful to be part of NBC's return to the WNBA, a league that has given me so much throughout my career. I'm excited to stay connected to the game I love, share a player's perspective, and help tell the stories that make this league so special. I'm grateful to join such an incredible team."
Before joining the NBC Sports team, Charles played for six WNBA teams: the Sun, the New York Liberty, the Washington Mystics, the Phoenix Mercury, the Seattle Storm, and the Atlanta Dream.
