Elina Svitolina has announced the end of her five-year marriage to fellow tennis star Gaël Monfils, attributing the decision to the emotional and mental impact of Russia's war in her native Ukraine.
Svitolina, 32, said in a statement posted on both players' Instagram profiles on Monday that she had endured sleepless nights, doubts and a feeling of losing herself, even with Monfils' support, before coming to the conclusion that she could not rediscover herself within their marriage.
"Gaël saw all of it," she wrote. "He never let go of my hand. We fought through this together for a long time, with everything we had. But some battles happen deep inside you, and no amount of love from someone else can win them for you.
"With time, I came to understand that I need to find my way back to myself and that I cannot do that within our marriage."
Svitolina's announcement comes a year after she ended her 2025 season early, saying she was not in the right emotional state to compete following Ukraine's Billie Jean King Cup semifinal defeat by Italy. Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Svitolina has spoken repeatedly about fearing for family and friends at home while competing overseas.

Dejounte Murray believes that Russell Westbrook is the greatest point guard of all time originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Russell Westbrook shocked the basketball world when he announced his retirement in the summer of 2026. That ended one of the best careers of the modern era, especially for a point guard. Unfortunately for Westbrook, he did not win a championship, but it seems his legacy is doing well amongst his peers.
Dejounte Murray is a standout point guard over the past few years, and he is never shy about giving his thoughts. This time, he made sure to give the Oklahoma City Thunder legend his flowers, to the point that he is calling the 2017 MVP the greatest point guard of all time.
Throughout his career, Murray has looked up to a lot of players. Now that he is with the New Orleans Pelicans, Murray has integrated plenty of lessons he's learned from a lot of top-tier point guards in the league's history. For him, Westbrook is at the peak of the position he plays.
Westbrook has an all-time legacy, but a lot of people would argue that he is not better than some players like Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Stephen Curry, who are considered by many as the greatest point guards in NBA history.

Liverpool have made a lot of changes to their squad this summer.
Some players such as Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones have been moved on, while others, such as Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet have been brought in.
It's not just their playing staff what have changed either with a decent chunk of the Reds' backroom staff also being re-jigged.
Richard Hughes is now Al-Hilal's sporting director and Michael Edwards just decided to quit after Fenway Sports Group's multi-club model was thrown in the bin.
Even though all these changes have been made, it still feels like more needs to be done before Liverpool are ready to be seen as genuine contenders for the Premier League ******* le again.

Bayern Munich will face Bodo/Glimt in their first Champions League game of the new campaign on Thursday night at the Allianz Arena.
The Bavarian giants are loaded with top-class attacking talent, but they can become even stronger with Jamal Musiala returning to full fitness.
Ahead of the match, here is the latest injury update on Bayern Munich's players.
Back in August, during pre-season, Musiala complained of dizziness and circulatory problems before collapsing on the pitch.
In July, Musiala underwent a minor, planned operation after returning from the World Cup. The club removed the metal plate from his foot, and it was expected that he would be able to play without any pain.

Michael Carrick has confirmed that Marcus Rashford suffered a slight injury before being replaced against Everton yesterday.
The forward played 70 minutes before being replaced by Patrick Dorgu.

Given he had been one of United's standout performers on Merseyside, fans were perplexed to see Rashford withdrawn when the side were chasing the win.
Carrick was also put on the spot regarding his withdrawal post-match, with Sky Sports questioning whether the England international had felt some discomfort, to which Carrick verified that was indeed the case.

Nico O'Reilly was set to start in midfield for Manchester City for their match against Coventry City yesterday at the Etihad Stadium. However, the England international suffered a minor back injury in the warm-up. Due to the injury he sustained, Nico O'Reilly was withdrawn from yesterday's match. Manchester City's club record signing Enzo Fernandez replaced O'Reilly in the starting lineup. By the time that Enzo Fernandez was taken off in the 76th minute of City's 1-0 win over Coventry City, he had shown exactly what he will bring to Enzo Maresca's side and how he will fit in. All told, Enzo Fernandez played well after being thrust into his first start for Manchester City.
When Nico O'Reilly went down injured in the warm-up yesterday, Enzo Fernandez didn't have a lot of time to prepare for his Manchester City debut. The Argentinian midfielder had barely trained with his new team and had barely featured for Chelsea this season before being signed by Manchester City. He was thrust straight into the thick of it due to circumstances outside of his control. By the time that Enzo Fernandez was replaced by Ayyoub Bouaddi in the 76th minute he had put in an impressive performance in midfield.
Enzo Fernandez played on the right of Manchester City's midfield. He got himself into great positions in the final third and he was already ready and willing to receive possession all over the pitch. As per SofaScore, Enzo Fernandez completed 71/78 of his passes as his composure on the ball stood out. He was always offering himself to his teammates and helped City dominate possession throughout the first half.
As an attacking threat, Enzo Fernandez offered plenty for Enzo Maresca's side. His late runs into the Coventry City box were a constant threat. He saw two shots blocked in the first half and if it wasn't for some desperate Coventry City defending he would have gotten on the scoresheet as he could've gotten on the end of several very good crosses. It was Enzo Fernandez who played Antoine ****** yo in on the right to set up Erling Haaland's header in the 26th minute.
Enzo Fernandez put in a promising debut for Manchester City yesterday. He slotted into Manchester City's midfield well and showed more than enough while he was on the pitch.
